• Can't make AWUS036H work in Ubuntu 12.10

  I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10. This is my kernel version: Linux 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 13 17:48:01 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux My wireless card is an AWUSU36H The first thing I do to install the driver is copy the driver from the CD to the Downloads folder. cd /media/me/AWUS036H/Drivers/RTL8187L/Unix (Linux)/Linux driver for kernel 2.6.X$ cp rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007.tar.gz ~/Downloads/ Then I extract the tar tar xvfz rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007.tar.gz I navigate into the extracted folder, and I try to follow the instructions in the Readme.txt cd rtl8187_linux_26.1025.0328.2007 This are the contents of the folder: drv.tar.gz makedrv stack.tar.gz wlan0rmv ieee80211 ReadMe.txt wlan0dhcp wlan0up ifcfg-wlan0 rtl8187 wlan0down wpa_supplicant-0.4.9 This is what the Readme.txt says: Release Date: 2006-02-09, ver 1.2^M RTL8187 Linux driver version 1.2^M ^M --This driver supports RealTek RTL8187 Wireless LAN driver for ^M Fedora Core 2/3/4/5, Debian 3.1, Mandrake 10.2/Mandriva 2006, ^M SUSE 9.3/10.1/10.2, Gentoo 3.1, etc.^M - Support Client mode for either infrastructure or adhoc mode^M - Support WEP and WPAPSK connection^M ^M < Component >^M The driver is composed of several parts:^M 1. • Flushing a queue using AMQP, Rabbit, and Ruby

  I'm developing a system in Ruby that is going to make use of RabbitMQ to send messages to a queue as it does some work. I am using: Ruby 1.9.1 Stable RabbitMQ 1.7.2 AMQP gem v0.6.7 (http://github.com/tmm1/amqp) Most of the examples I have seen on this gem have their publish calls in an EM.add_periodic_timer block. This doesn't work for what I suspect is a vast majority of use cases, and certainly not for mine. I need to publish a message as I complete some work, so putting a publish statement in an add_periodic_timer block doesn't suffice. So, I'm trying to figure out how to publish a few messages to a queue, and then "flush" it, so that any messages I've published are then delivered to my subscribers. To give you an idea of what I mean, consider the following publisher code: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mq' MESSAGES = ["hello","goodbye","test"] AMQP.start do queue = MQ.queue('testq') messages_published = 0 while (messages_published < 50) if (rand() < 0.4) message = MESSAGES[rand(MESSAGES.size)] puts "#{Time.now.to_s}: Publishing: #{message}" queue.publish(message) messages_published += 1 end sleep(0.1) end AMQP.stop do EM.stop end end So, this code simply loops, publishing a message with 40% probability on each iteration of the loop, and then sleeps for 0.1 seconds. It does this until 50 messages have been published, and then stops AMQP. Of course, this is just a proof of concept. Now, my subscriber code: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'rubygems' require 'mq' AMQP.start do queue = MQ.queue('testq') queue.subscribe do |header, msg| puts "#{Time.now.to_s}: Received #{msg}" end end So, we just subscribe to the queue, and for each message received, we print it out. Great, except that the subscriber only receives all 50 messages when the publisher calls AMQP.stop. Here's the output from my publisher. So, being an AMQP newb, how can I get my messages to deliver immediately? I tried putting AMQP.start and AMQP.stop in the body of the while loop of the publisher, but then only the first message gets delivered -- though strangely, if I turn on logging, there are no error messages reported by the server and the messages do get sent to the queue, but never get received by the subscriber.   Hi Guys I'm new to this forum so I'm unsure whether this is the right place for a question like this. I have a Trojan Horse infection that lives in memory and seems to be impossible to get rid of. I've tried a vew AntiVirus products (Norton, Windows Essentials & AVG Free) all to no avail & I've recently tried a few bootable antivirus solutions I found here: http://www.techmixer.com/free-bootable-antivirus-rescue-cds-download-list/ Kaspersky Rescue Disk 2008 (failed - it wouldn't even load the UI, is there a newer one out there?) F Secure Rescue Disk (Updates & Scanner ran, found 10 infections, said it was going to delete or repair them, but didn't get rid of them) Avira found a load of infections but it froze when I tried to interact with the UI after the scan. Every time I run these I'll load Windows after & run AVG, and it still finds Trojan Horse Generic.15.apnz (in Services.exe) & Trojan Horse Generic.16.ARSU (in svchost.exe) Is anyone familiar with a virus like this? Can anyone suggest how to approach a solution? Thanks Dave

• How do you monitor SSD wear in Windows when the drives are presented as 'generic' devices?

  Under Linux, we can monitor SSD wear fairly easily with smartmontools whether the drive is presented as a normal block device or a generic device (which happens when the drive has been hardware RAIDed by certain controllers such as the one on the IBM HS22). How can we do the equivalent under Windows? Does anyone actually use smartmontools? Or are there other packages out there? The problem is that SCSI Generic devices just don't show up in Windows. If the drives aren't RAIDed we can see them fine. • How to use Zune software to listen to podcasts with generic MP3 player?

  I listen to a bunch of podcasts - a great way to fill the otherwise mindless space of a daily commute. My MP3 player is a Transonic brand, appears on my computer as a generic storage device. I've been using iTunes to download the podcasts, and manually moving the files out of the disk folder onto my player, but this is pretty tedious. iTunes also fails to recognise that the files are gone and leaves them in the list. (Actually, iTunes for windows is pretty much a dog, but that's a different rant.) The Zune software is 99% of what I want in a podcast downloader - performs well, looks nice, downloads reliably and so on. Some features - like only downloading the next five unheard episodes of a podcast - are superb. However, if I manually move the files across to the MP3 player, the Zune software concludes that the file has never been downloaded, and downloads it again. This leads me to my question: What is a good way to use the Zune software to download podcasts for listening on a generic MP3 player? Are there any addons for the Zune software to make this easier? Registry hacks? Can I configure the Zune software to not download the same episode multiple times? Is there a way for the Zune software to populate my MP3 player directly, instead of having to copy files?

• Windows Server 2008 without telnet client - how to test connecting to remote ports without installing anything new?

  I'm looking to see if anyone knows of slick tricks to test connections to remote server ports from Windows server 2008 and variants that don't include the telnet client installed by default. Reason being, I sometimes have clients that want to connect to port 25 for example on a remote server and say they can't. I used to run a quick test by using "telent mailserver.tld 25" or whatever to see if I could get a response on that port. I don't want to have to install the telnet client just to test this if I dont have to - are there any other native windows utilities that will allow me to connect to a remote port?

  i have a biztalk - window service tied middleware application which talks to other system. recently we had a request to test for scenarios which relates to the date. as we have a lot of places in the application which uses the .net Datetime.Now value, we don't really want to go into the code level and change all these values. so we're looking at the simplest way to test which is to just change the OS time. but what we notice is that sometimes when we change the system date time, we will get account lock out due to Active Directory. So my question is what's a good and safe way that i can test for future dates, etc by changing the windows OS system date time but without causing any issues with the Active Directory. And where can i find out more about AD and how it issues token and what's the correlation with the system date time changes. Thanks! ~m

• Getting uninitialized constant error when trying to run tests

  I just updated all my gems and I'm finding that I'm getting errors when trying to run Test::Unit tests. I'm getting the error copied below. That comes from creating new, empty Rails project, scaffolding a simple model, and running rake test. Tried Googling "uninitialized constant" and TestResultFailureSupport. The only thing I found was this bug report from 2007. I'm using OS X. Some of those who have taken Test M have also taken Test I, and some of those who have taken Test I have also taken Test B. For the first two tests (M and I), students can score grades I, II, or III. Those passing this test get 1 point, with no points for failure. (Well actually, grades are awarded, but all grades are given a common 1 point). An amateur has entered data to represent these students and their grades in an Excel file. Problem is, this person has done the worst thing possible - he has developed his own notation and entered all test information in a single cell --- and made my life hell. The file originally had two text columns, one for individual's id, and the second for test info, if one could call it that. It's horrible, I know, and I am suffering. In the image, if you see "M-II-2 I-III-1" it means the person got grade II in Test M for 2 points and grade III in Test I for 1 point. Some have taken only one test, some two, and some three. When the file came to me for processing and analyzing the performance of students, I sent it back with instructions to insert 3 additional columns with only the grades for the three tests. The file now looks as follows. Columns C and D represent grades I, II, and III using 1,2 and 3 respectively. Column C is for Test M, column D for Test I. Column E says BA (B Achieved!) if the individual has passed Test B. Now that you have the above information, let's get to the problem. I don't trust this and want to check whether data in column B matches with data in columns C,D and E. That is, I want to examine the string in column B and find out whether the figures in columns C,D and E are correct. All help is really appreciated. P.S. - I had exported this to MySQL via ODBC and that is why you are seeing those NULLs. I tried doing this in MySQL too, and really will accept a MySQL or an Excel solution, I don't have a preference. Edit : - See file with sample data

I could write another [Test] method looping on "someParam" values and calling TestSomething(), it means 2 methods for every test, and the test report is not as good as with individual TestSomethingWithXValue() methods. So, is there any way to programmatically generate fixtures for every test methods and input values?

  I have a class, containing a list property, where the list contains objects that has an enum property. When I serialize this, it looks like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ibm850"?> <test> <events> <test-event type="changing" /> <test-event type="changed" /> </events> </test> Is it possible, through attributes, or similar, to get the Xml to look like this? <?xml version="1.0" encoding="ibm850"?> <test> <events> <changing /> <changed /> </events> </test> Basically, use the property value of the enum as a way to determine the tag-name? Is using a class hierarchy (ie. creating subclasses instead of using the property value) the only way? Edit: After testing, it seems even a class-hierarchy won't actually work. If there is a way to structure the classes to get the output I want, even with sub-classes, that is also an acceptable answer. • SSL_CLIENT_CERT_CHAIN not being passed to backend server

  I have client certificate configured and working in Apache. I want to pass the PEM-encoded X.509 certificates of the client to the backend server. I tried with the SSLOptions +ExportCertData. This does nothing at all, while the documentation states it should add SSL_SERVER_CERT, SSL_CLIENT_CERT and SSL_CLIENT_CERT_CHAINn (with n = 0,1,2,..) as headers. Any ideas why this option is not working? I then tried setting the headers myself using RequestHeader. This works fine for all variables except SSL_CLIENT_CERT_CHAIN. It shows null in the header. Any ideas why the certificate chain is not being filled? • How to reverse proxy with or without trailing slash

  I have a apache web server that needs to reverse proxy a site. So example.com/test/ or example.com/test pull from the same other webserver. I have setup a reverse proxy for the one without the trailing slash like this: ProxyPass /test http://othersite.com/test ProxyPassReverse /testhttp://othersite.com/test But it doesn't work with a trailing slash. Any Ideas? I have tried redirecting from /test/ to /test with no luck. Thanks.

• Always use dtexec.exe to test performance of your dataflows. No exceptions.

  Earlier this evening I posted a blog post entitled Investigation: Can different combinations of components effect Dataflow performance? where I compared the performance of three different dataflows all working to the same overall goal. I wanted to make one last point related to the results but I thought it warranted a blog post all of its own. Here is a screenshot of one of the dataflows that I was testing: Pretty complicated I’m sure you’ll agree. Now, when I executed this dataflow in the test it was executing in ~19seconds however in that case I was executing using the command-line tool dtexec. I also tried executing inside the BIDS development environment and in that case it took much longer – 139seconds. That’s more than seven times as long. The point I want to make is very simple. If you are testing your dataflows for performance please use dtexec. Nothing else will suffice. @Jamiet
