Casting to generic type in Java doesn't raise ClassCastException?

I have come across a strange behavior of Java that seems like a bug. Is it? Casting an Object to a generic type (say, K) does not throw a ClassCastException even if the object is not an instance of K. I have some text boxes, all of which have the same class "addExamNumberBoxStyle". Now I want to bind a "blur" handler to each one of these. i use nicEdit to write RTF data in my CMS. The problem is that it generates strings like this: hello first line<br><br />this is a second line<br />this is a 3rd line since this is for a news site, i much prefer the final html to be like this: <p>hello first line</p><p>this is a second line<br />this is a 3rd line</p> so my current solution is this: i need to trim the $data for <br /> at the start/end of the string replace <br /><br /> with </p><p> (one single <br /> is allowed). finally, add <p> at the start and </p> at the end i only have the 3rd step so far. can someone give me a hand with steps 1 and 2? function replace_br($data) { # step 3 $data = '<p>'.$data.'</p>'; return $data; } thanks! ps: it would be even better to avoid specific situations. example: "hello<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />too much space" -- those 5 breaklines should also be converted to just one "</p><p>"Read the article

Window Size when SizeToContent is not specified

When the following XAML used, the window size is not 5000x5000, but some small window where the button is cropped. <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.Window1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="Window1" > <Button Width="5000" Height="5000">XXX</Button> </Window> From what I can tell, size I did not specify the SizeToContent attribute, the default is "Manual", so it will use *size of a window is determined by other properties, including Width, Height, MaxWidth, MaxHeight, MinWidth, and MinHeight. * From the WPF Windows Overview, it seems those other properties are FrameworkElement::MinHeight/Width, and FrameworkElement::MaxHeight. But since the default for the Mins are 0, the Maxs are Infinity and the Width/Height is Nan....what's going on? Where is WPF getting the window size? XmlSerialize a custom collection with an Attribute

I've got a simple class that inherits from Collection and adds a couple of properties. I need to serialize this class to XML, but the XMLSerializer ignores my additional properties. I assume this is because of the special treatment that XMLSerializer gives ICollection and IEnumerable objects. What's the best way around this? NoSql Crash Course/Tutorial

Hi all, I've seen NoSQL pop up quite a bit on SO and I have a solid understanding of why you would use it (from here, Wikipedia, etc). This could be due to the lack of concrete and uniform definition of what it is (more of a paradigm than concrete implementation), but I'm struggling to wrap my head around how I would go about designing a system that would use it or how I would implement it in my system. I'm really stuck in a relational-db mindset thinking of things in terms of tables and joins... At any rate, does anybody know of a crash course/tutorial on a system that would use it (kind of a "hello world" for a NoSQL-based system) or a tutorial that takes an existing "Hello World" app based on SQL and converts it to NoSQL (not necessarily in code, but just a high-level explanation). I see this having one solid answer, but if you guys feel like it should be community wiki, I'll be happy to change it. Thanks! ChrisRead the article

Why am I getting a segmentation fault when I use binmode with threads in Perl?

Hi Folks, this call my $th = threads->create(\&print, "Hello thread World!\n"); $th->join(); works fine. But as soon as I add binmode(STDOUT, ":encoding(ISO-8859-1)"); to my script file, I get an error like "segmentation fault", "access denied". What is wrong to define an encoding type when trying to call a perl thread? PHP or Javascript or other - Draw simple shapes onto images?

I basically have an image of a world map and i would like to place a pin image at a specified pixel co-ordinate ontop of this world map image. It's for a website, so ideally the solution should be in PHP or Javascript (i'm avoiding Java and Flash as i want it to be as simple as possible). I had a look at the processing.js library but it is way to big and bloated for just performing this simple task. Is there a pre-existing Javascript function which will allow me to do this? Or a more simple javascript library that i can use? (processing.js was a bit too advanced for me, i couldnt get it working lol) In terms of a PHP solution, i would prefer taking the load off the server and onto the client for this task, but i would still like to hear methods for doing it in PHP if they are suitable. I read/heard about web farms, integration between different systems, load balancing ... etc. Therefore, I was wondering if there are ways for the individual developer to create an environment that simulates real world situations with minimal number of machines like: web farms & caching simulating many users accessing your website (Pressure tests?) Performance load balancing anything you think I should consider. By the way, I have a server machine and 1 PC. and I don't mind investing in tools and software. PS. How to represent and insert into an ordered list in SQL?

I want to represent the list "hi", "hello", "goodbye", "good day", "howdy" (with that order), in a SQL table: pk | i | val ------------ 1 | 0 | hi 0 | 2 | hello 2 | 3 | goodbye 3 | 4 | good day 5 | 6 | howdy 'pk' is the primary key column. Disregard its values. 'i' is the "index" that defines that order of the values in the 'val' column. It is only used to establish the order and the values are otherwise unimportant. The problem I'm having is with inserting values into the list while maintaining the order. For example, if I want to insert "hey" and I want it to appear between "hello" and "goodbye", then I have to shift the 'i' values of "goodbye" and "good day" (but preferably not "howdy") to make room for the new entry. So, is there a standard SQL pattern to do the shift operation, but only shift the elements that are necessary? (Note that a simple "UPDATE table SET i=i+1 WHERE i=3" doesn't work, because it violates the uniqueness constraint on 'i', and also it updates the "howdy" row unnecessarily.) Or, is there a better way to represent the ordered list? I suppose you could make 'i' a floating point value and choose values between, but then you have to have a separate rebalancing operation when no such value exists. Or, is there some standard algorithm for generating string values between arbitrary other strings, if I were to make 'i' a varchar? Or should I just represent it as a linked list? I was avoiding that because I'd like to also be able to do a SELECT .. ORDER BY to get all the elements in order.Read the article

http response to GET request - working in FF not Chromium

For fun I'm trying to write a very simple server in C. When I send this response to Firefox it prints out the body "hello, world" but with Chromium it gives me a Error 100 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED): Unknown error. Are large include files like iostream efficient? (C++)

Iostream, when all of the files it includes, the files that those include, and so on and so forth, adds up to about 3000 lines. Consider the hello world program, which needs no more functionality than to print something to the screen: #include <iostream> //+3000 lines right there. int main() { std::cout << "Hello, World!"; return 0; } this should be a very simple piece of code, but iostream adds 3000+ lines to a marginal piece of code. So, are these 3000+ lines of code really needed to simply display a single line to the screen, and if not, do they create a less efficient program than if I simply copied the relevant lines into the code?Read the article

Hi, is it possible to call a service operation at a wcf endpoint uri with a self hosted service? I want to call some default service operation when the client enters the endpoint uri of the service. In the following sample these uris correctly call the declared operations (SayHello, SayHi): - http://localhost:4711/clerk/hello - http://localhost:4711/clerk/hi But the uri - http://localhost:4711/clerk does not call the declared SayWelcome operation. Instead it leads to the well known 'Metadata publishing disabled' page. How can get dtrace to run the traced command with non-root priviledges ?

OS X lacks linux's strace, but it has dtrace which is supposed to be so much better. However, I miss the ability to do simple tracing on individual commands. For example, on linux I can write strace -f gcc hello.c to caputre all system calls, which gives me the list of all the filenames needed by the compiler to compile my program (the excellent memoize script is built upon this trick) I want to port memoize on the mac, so I need some kind of strace. What I actually need is the list of files gcc reads and writes into, so what I need is more of a truss. Sure enough can I say dtruss -f gcc hello.c and get somewhat the same functionality, but then the compiler is run with root priviledges, which is obviously undesirable (apart from the massive security risk, one issue is that the a.out file is now owned by root :-) I then tried dtruss -f sudo -u myusername gcc hello.c, but this feels a bit wrong, and does not work anyway (I get no a.out file at all this time, not sure why) All that long story tries to motivate my original question: how do I get dtrace to run my command with normal user priviledges, just like strace does in linux ? Only Integrating Box2D collision detection in my 2d engine?

I have integrated box2d in my engine, ( Debug Draw, etc. ) and with a world I can throw in some 2d squares/rectangles etc. I saw this post, where the user is basically not using a world for collision detection, however the user doesn't explain anything about how he's using the manifold (b2Manifold), etc. Another post, is in the cocos2d forum, ( scroll down to the user Lam in the third reply ) Could anyone help me a bit with this?, basically want to add collision detection without the need of using b2World ,etc etc. Thanks a lot!Read the article

seg fault at the end of program after executing everything?

emacs: Inferior-mode python-shell appears "lagged"

Hi all - I'm a Python(3.1.2)/emacs(23.2) newbie teaching myself tkinter using the pythonware tutorial found here. Relevant code is pasted below the question. Question: when I click the Hello button (which should call the say_hi function) why does the inferior python shell (i.e. the one I kicked off with C-c C-c) wait to execute the say_hi print function until I either a) click the Quit button or b) close the root widget down? When I try the same in IDLE, each click of the Hello button produces an immediate print in the IDLE python shell, even before I click Quit or close the root widget. Is there some quirk in the way emacs runs the Python shell (vs. IDLE) that causes this "lagged" behavior? I've noticed similar emacs lags vs. IDLE as I've worked through Project Euler problems, but this is the clearest example I've seen yet. FYI: I use python.el and have a relatively clean init.el... (setq python-python-command "d:/bin/python31/python") is the only line in my init.el. PHP MVC Framework Structure

I am sorry about the amount of code here. I have tried to show enough for understanding while avoiding confusion (I hope). I have included a second copy of the code at Pastebin. (The code does execute without error/notice/warning.) I am currently creating a Content Management System while trying to implement the idea of Model View Controller. I have only recently come across the concept of MVC (within the last week) and trying to implement this into my current project. One of the features of the CMS is dynamic/customisable menu areas and each feature will be represented by a controller. Therefore there will be multiple versions of the Controller Class, each with specific extended functionality. I have looked at a number of tutorials and read some open source solutions to the MVC Framework. I am now trying to create a lightweight solution for my specific requirements. I am not interested in backwards compatibility, I am using PHP 5.3. An advantage of the Base class is not having to use global and can directly access any loaded class using $this->Obj['ClassName']->property/function();. Hoping to get some feedback using the basic structure outlined (with performance in mind). Specifically; a) Have I understood/implemented the concept of MVC correctly? b) Have I understood/implemented Object Orientated techniques with PHP 5 correctly? c) Should the class propertise of Base be static? d) Improvements? I have a paragraph in a single string and I'd like to get all the words in that paragraph. Is there a rule in CSS that determines the cascading order when multiple classes are defined on an element? (class="one two" vs class="two one") Right now, there seems to be no such effect.
