• Java and what to do with it

  I've been browsing through several websites and several topics on this website. Now I'm just a starting programmer and I want to make a good decision. From what I understand is that Java is used alot for server stuff, and web applets but not really for computer applications running on a client, it's also used for Android programming and several other mobiles. I'm really interested in Android programming, I really love to program for mobile devices, in this case Android because I really think it has a lot of potential and I don't like the iPhone. If I want to program on Android I have to learn Java (aside from Mono). but if my decision changes over the next couple of years I don't think Java is the right language to get a job that programs computer applications. I think I get a job where I have to program server stuff, rather than computer applications. That's why I think C# is a good choice. I can program for Windows Phone 7 (I hope that will get big). and I have the feeling C# is more widely used for computer applications. so I think C# is more versatile looking at Mobile programming and computer programming. Or am I totally wrong thinking this?

• Reduce weight in healthy way

  This post is my daily summary of activities that I am going to take to reduce my overall weight by 15 lbs. I am not an overweight person as per my height of 5.11 I have decent weight of 178.4 and good body build. But from a long time(approx 3 month) I am thinking of getting 2-3 abs (note not 6 abs) and reducing my weight to below 170 ( which I was 2 years ago). This post will work as my daily diary of what I ate, what exercises I did, what apps/software I used to monitor my weight loss. Sometime it will not contain much information but some time when I will research will contain information for people who really want to reduce weight. My current target for next few week is to run 2.5 miles everyday under 30 minutes. Eat a lot of fruits and vegetable. No burger or tacos. No meat either fat or lean. And checking body weight after every four hour. Here are reading for today10:00 AM  - 178.22:00 PM    - 178.4I have already ran for 2 miles in 25 minutes, did a little bit of shoulder exercise and had eaten small bowl of vegetable biryani and two bread.I hope this post and all coming post will give the reader the first hand experience of a person who had read every blog and articles related to reducing weight and now trying to do it by implementing all of them by self. My approach will be a healthy way of reducing weight, I am not going to starve my self or going to eat only fruits all day. I will enjoy all the food item that I like to eat and will work hard on my body. This way I will / reduce the weight naturally and will increase the flexibility, durability and immunity of my system /body.

• About C# objects and the possibilties it has

  As a novice programmer and I always wonder about c# capabilities. I know it is still early to judge that but all i want to know is can c# do complex stuffs or something outside windows OS. I think C# is a proprietary language (I don't know if I said that right) meaning you can't do it outside Visual Studio or Windows. Also you can't create your own controller (called object right?) like you are forced to use these available in toolbox and their properties and methods. Can C# be used with OpenGL API or DirectX API Finally it always bothers me when I think I start doing things in Visual Studio, I know it sounds arrogant to say but sometimes I feel that I don't like to be forced to use something even if its helpful, like I feel (do I have the right to feel?) that I want to do all things by myself? Don't laugh I just feel that this will give me a better understanding. Is Visual C# like using MaxScript inside 3ds max in that C# is exclusive to do Windows and Forms and Components that are Windows related and maxscript is only for 3d editing and manipulation for various things in the software. If it is too difficult for a beginner I hope you don't answer the fourth question as I don't have enough motivation and I want to keep the little I have. Note: Sorry for my English, I am self taught and never used the language with native speakers so expect so errors. I have a lot of questions regarding many things, what is the daily ratio you think for asking (number of questions) that would not bother the admins of the site and the members here.   SQL Server provides a range of string manipulation functions. I was aware of most of those in back of the mind, but when I needed to use one, I had to dig it out either from SQL server help file or from google. So, I thought I will list some of the functions which performs some common operations in SQL server. Hope it will be helpful to you all. Len (' String_Expression' ) - returns the length of input String_Expression. Example - Select Len('Vipin') Output - 5 Left ( 'String_Expression', int_characters ) - returns int_characters characters from the left of the String_Expression.     Example - Select Left('Vipin',3), Right('Vipin',3) Output -  Vip,  Pin  LTrim ( 'String_Expression' ) - removes spaces from left of the input 'String_Expression'  RTrim ( 'String_Expression' ) - removes spaces from right of the input 'String_Expression' Note - To removes spaces from both ends of the string_expression use Ltrim and RTrim in conjunction Example - Select LTrim(' Vipin '), RTrim(' Vipin ') , LTrim ( RTrim(' Vipin ')) Output - 'Vipin ' , ' Vipin' , 'Vipin' (Single quote marks ' ' are not part of the SQL output, it's just been included to demonstrate the presence of space at the end of string.) Substring ( 'String_Expression' , int_start , int_length ) - this function returns the part of string_expression. Right ( 'String_Expression', int_characters ) - returns int_characters characters from the right of the String_Expression.

• How to sync client and server at the first frame

  I'm making a game where an authoritative server sends information to all clients about states and positions for objects in a 3d world. The player can control his character by clicking on the screen to set a destination for the character, much like in the Diablo series. I've read most information I can find online about interpolation, reconciliation, and general networking architecture (Valve's for instance). I think I understand everything but one thing seems to be missing in every article I read. Let say we have an interpolation delay of 100ms, server tickrate=50ms, latency=200ms; How do I know when 100ms has past on the client? If the server sends the first update on t=0, can I assume it arrives at t=200, therefore assuming that all packets takes the same amount of time to reach the client? What if the first packet arrives a little quick, for instance at t=150. I would then be starting the client with t=150 and at t=250 it will think it has past 100ms since its connect to the server when it in fact only 50ms has past. Hopefully the above paragraph is understandable. The summarized question would be: How do I know at what tick to start simulating the client? EDIT: This is how I ended up doing it: The client keeps a clock (approximately) in sync with the server. The client then simulates the world at simulationTime = syncedTime - avg(RTT)/2 - interpolationTime The round-trip time can fluctuate so therefore I average it out over time. By only keeping the most recent values when calculating the average I hope to adapt to more permanent changes in latency. It's still to early to draw any conclusion. I'm currently simulating bad network connections, but it's looking good so far. Anyone see any possible problems?

  Hello, Happy to start contributing to this blog..  The title of the blog is probably deceptively simple and warrants an elaboration. Customized BPM workspaces/user interfaces are a fairly common requirement. One of our marquee customers in the online stock trading business, envisioned this user interaction for their BPM application: User logs in to the internal portal Use will have list of roles which he is granted as a drop down list Once user selects the role, a list of processes which user is part of appear. Logged in user can be part of any swimlane role of the process This can be a fairly common/reasonable user-UI interaction pattern. 1. and 2. are easily achievable and hence the subject matter of this blog is the requirement in 3. Objective: Given a username and a role, list all the BPM processes that the user is part of, in any swimlane of any process. Here is quick overview of the major steps/logic in the code: Intialize workflow/BPM  context as usual Get a handle on InstanceQueryService(getInstanceQueryService), InstanceManagementService,        ProcessMetadataService and ProcessModelService List all Processes for that bpmcontext (listProcessMetadataSumary) and get Granted roles to that user For each of the processes [method  getAccessibleProcesss(ProcessMetadataSummary, Set)]for each of the lanes in the process, check if the role granted to the user, matches the roleName for that swimlane. If so, add to output. Notes: The usual caveats apply including BPM APIs are subject to change.  JDeveloper method introspection is your better friend than API documentation :-)... • How can I include my derived class type name in the serialized JSON?

  Sometimes working with the js Serializer is easy, sometimes its not.   When I attempt to serialize an object that is derived from a base, the serializer decided whether or not to include the type name. When its present, the type name is represented by a ___type attribute in the serialized json like this: {"d":{"__type":"Commerce.Integration.Surfaces.OrderCreationRequest","RepId":0}} The missing type name is a problem if I intend to ship the object back into a web method that needs to deserialize the object.   Without the Type name, serialization will fail and result in a ugly web exception. The solution, which feels more like a work-around, is to explicitly tell the serializer to ALWAYS generate the type name for each derived type.  You make this declaration by adding a [GenerateScriptType())] attribute for each derived type to the top of the web page declaration.   For example, assuming I had 3 derivations of OrderCreationRequest; PersonalOrderCreationRequest, CompanyOrderCreationRequest, InternalOrderCreationRequestion, the code-behind for my web page would be decorated as follows: [GenerateScriptType(typeof(PersonalOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(CompanyOrderCreationRequest))] [GenerateScriptType(typeof(InternalOrderCreationRequest))] public partial class OrderMethods : Page { ... } With the type names generated in the serialized JSON, the serializer can successfully deserialize instances of any of these types passed into a web method. • How to switch off? [closed]

  While I've programmed software for many years, I've only recently started doing so professionally and have noticed a bit of a problematic pattern. I hope this is the best place to pose such a question, as I am interested in others' experiences and solutions... Writing software is, by its nature, a cerebral exercise. When coding for my own sake, I would do so until I was satisfied; even if that meant going all night. Now I'm coding in exchange for goods and services, on projects that are inherently uninteresting to me, I want to 'switch off' when it's time to go home. Maybe you consider that to be a 'bad attitude', but I just don't feel that whatever I'm working on is worth caring about after-hours. Besides, my employer doesn't exactly have the infrastructure required to make out-of-office changes; I can't just clone a repo and even remote login is a PITA. Anyway, the problem I'm experiencing is that, while I'm not particularly overworked or stressed, if I'm faced with a problem, my brain will work on a solution. Generally, it won't give up. Hence I can't switch off and, sometimes, the problem or the solution is significant enough that it disrupts my sleep. While, paradoxically, this doesn't seem to affect my coding ability, it can have a profound impact of the rest of my life. I get increasingly low as I get tired. So far, the best solutions I've found are writing little notes on the matter (and, say, e-mailing them back to my work address) and exercise. Neither of these can switch me off entirely and, as the week progresses, exercise especially becomes untenable due to tiredness. TL;DR How can you stop from being a coding zombie?

• Have there been attempts to make object containers that search for valid programs by auto wiring compatible components?

  I hope this post isn't too "Fringe" - I'm sure someone will just kill it if it is :) Three things made me want to reach out about this now: Decoupling is so in the forefront of design. TDD inspires the idea that it doesn't matter how a program comes to exist as long as it works. Seeing how often the adapter pattern is applied to achieve (1). I'm almost sure this has been tried from a memory of reading about it around the year 2000 or so. If I had to guess, it was maybe about and earlier version of the Java Spring framework. At this time we were not so far from days when the belief was that computer programs could exhibit useful emergent behavior. I think the article said it didn't work, but it didn't say it was impossible. I wonder if since then it has been deemed impossible or simply an illusion due to a false assumption of similarity between a brain and a CPU. I know this illusion existed because I had an internship in 1996 where I programmed neural nets that were supposedly going to exhibit "brain damage". STILL, after all that, I'm sitting around this morning and not able to shake the idea that it should be possible to have a method of programming to allow autonomous components to find each other, attempt to collaborate and their outputs evaluated against a set desired results.

• How to handle monetary values in PHP and MySql?

  I've inherited a huge pile of legacy code written in PHP on top of a MySQL database. The thing I noticed is that the application uses doubles for storage and manipulation of data. Now I came across of numerous posts mentioning how double are not suited for monetary operations because of the rounding errors. However, I have yet to come across a complete solution to how monetary values should be handled in PHP code and stored in a MySQL database. Is there a best practice when it comes to handling money specifically in PHP? Things I'm looking for are: How should the data be stored in the database? column type? size? How should the data be handling in normal addition, subtraction. multiplication or division? When should I round the values? How much rounding is acceptable if any? Is there a difference between handling large monetary values and low ones? Note: A VERY simplified sample code of how I might encounter money values in everyday life: $a= $_POST['price_in_dollars']; //-->(ex: 25.06) will be read as a string should it be cast to double? $b= $_POST['discount_rate'];//-->(ex: 0.35) value will always be less than 1 $valueToBeStored= $a * $b; //--> any hint here is welcomed $valueFromDatabase= $row['price']; //--> price column in database could be double, decimal,...etc. $priceToPrint=$valueFromDatabase * 0.25; //again cast needed or not? I hope you use this sample code as a means to bring out more use cases and not to take it literally of course. Bonus Question If I'm to use an ORM such as Doctrine or PROPEL, how different will it be to use money in my code.

• Need Help Hiring a Perfectionist Programmer [closed]

  I understand my question may be in the gray area, but I'm not able to use the Meta to ask if this question is appropriate or not so I'll simply have to risk it. My project is complete in the sense that it's a fully functional, ready to go 1.0 version. However, that's not good enough for my standards. My expertise is in HTML/CSS, not jQuery and PHP. I'm looking for someone to refine every character of my code for quality, speed, security and compatibility. I want everything to be as bug free as possible for launch. So I need an expert programmer who's a perfectionist in their coding who cares about the quality of their work (not just making it work) to review and refine my code. I'm sure I can't outright post the project's details and hope for interested parties to contact me as that wouldn't be beneficial to the community so instead I'm looking for advice from programmers about where some of best places to hire quality programmers are and the best strategies to hire the right programmer. In other words, screening applicants off of craigslist isn't going to cut it for this project. Thanks

• radeon display driver clones monitors while using Xinerama

  I'm trying to get my two Radeon HD 4770 cards working with three monitors. Xinerama works so far in the way that I have two fully working monitors were I can move windows from one to the other. My problem now is that my third monitor is a clone of my second monitor (displaying the exact same thing). These monitors are connected to the same graphic card ("Screen Middle" and "Screen Right" in the xorg.conf below). • Windows Defender Update KB915597 (Definition 1.135.415.0)? Killed My Live Discs

  Here's my problem, for those willing to read for about 2 minutes here's the entire story, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-windows_update/bsod-after-windows-defender-update-kb915597/a4b5fca3-0274-47b4-97c4-61b34c4c4599, for those who want the short version here's what happened. After windows update automatically updated windows defender to kb915597, my computer starting getting bsods on shut down and start up and started experiencing problems withe the usb ports. So I decided to go to the microsoft answers site for help, I know that was probably my first mistake, so I followed their advice and they turned my computer into a large paper weight. Luckily I make physical backups of my c drive every few months and I have one from back in july, so I figured I'd boot up a ubuntu live disc, copy all my files from the past 2 months to a external drive and just copy the backup back to the c drive, that's where I ran into this problem. When I put in either a ubuntu or kubuntu disc, everything goes well, until it finishes the loading bar then when the OS would presumably start up, the computer resets, I've tried with ubuntu, kubuntu and gparted, and only gparted is able to get to the point where it starts up, but even then when I try to access the internet from it, the computer resets, and when I tried to copy the entire C drive partition to a blank external I wasn't able to. So I figured somehow maybe the C drive had something to do with it, so I unplugged the C drive so my computer was just a 2.8 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram, should have had no problem starting a live disc but the problem still continues. After doing some googling around I've found whenever windows gets a update with the title KB915597 it's pretty much the kill switch for windows, I've tried contacting microsoft tech support and even managed to directly contact a software engineer but as soon as I mention KB915597 they all just blew me off. I hope anybody who reads this has any idea how to fix this, I'm going to attempt to install ubuntu or kubuntu to a external drive using the same computer and see what happens now.

• What do I need to Mod a Unreal Engine 3 game?

  what I am looking for is some advise making a mod for a certain game and how I would go about making it. The game I am talking about is Blacklight: Retribution and what I wan't to know is; Is it possible? And if so, what programs will I need? It is an online only game so I was unsure how plausible a mod would be for it. Plus I have never made a video game before, but I do like the game and I wanted to do some things with it. Additionally, this will be my first time making anything video game related so I would appreciate any advise. To expand a bit, I plan to add something simple at first. A mod that would let you spectate another player in the first person. Then I plan do something a bit more complex where I want to make so the game optionally always records you playing (in short intervals most likely or you would run quickly out of memory). After all that is done I would add items, armor, weapons, and maybe make a map or not I am not sure but this in a shell what I hope to do. I don't know much about these things but I am reading anything I can get my hands on. So if this is overly ambitious or just plain out not a possibility any advise on what I should look to instead will be welcomed warmly. Thank you.

  hi people i hope you can help a little bit , i appreciate your time look: i have a this desktop i7 2600, 8gb ram ddr3, board intel dh61ww, Geforce Nvidia GT520-cn 2Gb ddr3, i just install ubuntu 64bits 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-23-generic , i want to setup two monitors samsung led 22" and get start mi video card 1) i download and installed nvidia driver 295.59 and also try with 302.17 to apt-update and upgrade, apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r), apt-get remove --purge nvidia*, apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau, vim /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf blacklist vga16fb blacklist nouveau blacklist rivafb blacklist nvidiafb blacklist rivatv sh NVIDIA.run, sudo service lightdm start, reboot, nvidia-xorgconf 2)after reboot i get 800x600 and nvidia-settings say this. You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. • How do I fix "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode?"

  First off, I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a 30gb partition, the rest of my hdd is for a vista partition. The way I installed this was, I shrunk the vista partition and installed Ubuntu in the largest block of free space. Ubuntu has been working fine for a few weeks, and I've loved it, but today I was doing something in Vista (something simple) and I restarted to go back into ubuntu, and when it tried to boot up I got a message that said: "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input devices could not be detected correctly. You will have to configure these yourself." I click OK, and it gives me a few options but all of them are dead ends. Basically, I'm stuck in CLI right now without a clue of how to fix it. I've tried doing a full update and it hasn't made a difference. I've already been asking for help in #Ubuntu and #Radeon and I was directed by some of them here, so I hope I can find some answers here. Also, I'm using an ATI Radeon X1200. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Another thing, while I was trying to get help in #radeon I was told that it could possibly be this bug.

• Finding Android contract work?

  Hi all, Hope I'm in the right place... apologies in advance if not. How and where do people find contract work? Specifically Android work... Two years ago, following 15+ years in Win32 and SymbianOS, I decided to intensively focus on Android. I took the best part of 2009 off work to learn the new platform thoroughly, and that seems to have been a good strategic decision... Android is everywhere now. But it seems strangely hard to find Android development work. I have this nagging feeling that there must be some website, some secret society or labour exchange, that has somehow eluded me... :-\ What's going on? If you're a contractor, how did you find your current work? Because looking at page after page of cut'n'paste ads on Jobserve is destroying my will to live. As is the "0 results" response when I search for "Android" on careers.stackoverflow.com. Any help / insight sincerely appreciated. -- Reuben

• Is there a massive other side to software development which I've somehow missed, revolving entirely around Microsoft?

  I'm still a beginning programmer; I've been at it for 2 years. I've learned to work with a few languages, a bit of web development technologies, a handful of libraries, frameworks, and IDEs. But over the past two years (and long before I even started, really), I keep hearing references to these...things. A million of them. Things such as C#, ADO, SOAP, ASP, ASP.NET, the .NET framework, CLR, F#, etc etc. And I've read their Wikipedia articles, in-depth, multiple times, and they all mention a million other things on that list, but I just can't seem to grasp what it all is. The only thing I've taken away with any certainty is that Microsoft is behind all of it. It sounds almost like a conspiracy. Are all these technologies just for developing on the Windows platform? What is .NET? Do some software developers dedicate their entire career just to that side of things? Why would I want to get into it, and what advantage does...whatever it is...have over all the other technologies there are? I hope this makes sense. It's a broad question, but inside it there's a very specific question asking about something I don't know the name of. Hopefully you can grasp my confusion.

• C++ Succinctly now available!

  Over the summer I worked with SyncFusion to create an eBook based off of my C# to C++ guide for their free Succinctly Series of eBooks. Today the result, C++ Succinctly, was published for download. It is a free (registration required; they make tools and libraries for .NET development so you might get an occasional email from them – I’ve been signed up for a few months and have had maybe 3 emails total so it’s not horrible super spam or anything ) and you can download it as a PDF or a Kindle .MOBI file (or both). I’m excited with how it turned out and enjoyed working with the people at SyncFusion. The book contains a total of 20 code samples, which you can download from BitBucket (there’s a link very early in the book). Almost all of the code is also inline in the book itself so that you don’t need to worry about flipping back and forth between your dev machine and your eReader (but if you want to try to understand a concept better, you can easily download the code, open it up in VS 2012, and play around with it to see what happens when you tinker with things). The code does require Visual Studio 2012 because of its expanded support for C++11 features and since I wrote all of the samples as Console programs for clarity and compactness, you will need a version that supports C++ desktop development (currently VS 2012 Pro, Premium, or Ultimate). Sometime this Fall, Microsoft will be releasing Visual Studio 2012 Express for Windows Desktop which should provide a free way to use the samples. That said, I tested all of the samples with MinGW and only the StorageDurationSample will not compile with it due to the thread-local storage code. If you comment that out then you can compile and run all the samples with MinGW (or using a recent version of GCC in a GNU/Linux environment, or any other C++ compiler that provides the same level of C++11 support that Visual Studio 2012 does). I hope it proves helpful to those of you who choose to check it out!

• Nifty default controls prevent the rest of my game from rendering

  I've been trying to add a basic HUD to my 2D LWJGL game using nifty gui, and while I've been successful in rendering panels and static text on top of the game, using the built-in nifty controls (e.g. an editable text field) causes the rest of my game to not render. The strange part is that I don't even have to render the gui control, merely declaring it appears to cause this problem. • I am not the most logically-organized person. Do I have any chance at being a good 'low-level' programmer?

  Background: I am entering college next year. I really enjoy making stuff and solving logical problems, so I'm thinking of majoring in compsci and working in software development. I hope to have the kind of job where I can work with implementing / improving algorithms and data structures on a regular basis.. as opposed to, say, a job that's purely concerned with mashing different libraries together, or 'finding the right APIs for the job'. (Hence the word 'low-level' in the title. No, I don't wish to write assembly all day.) Thing is, I've never been the most logically-sharp person. Thus far I have only worked on hobby projects, but I find that I make the silliest of errors ever so often, and it can take me ages to find it. Like anywhere between three hours to a day to locate a simple segfault, off-by-one error, or other logical mistake. (Of course, I do other things in the meantime, like browsing SO, reddit, and the like..) It's not like I'm 'new' to programming either; I first tried C++ maybe five years ago. My question is: is this normal? Should a programmer with any talent solve it in less time? Having read Spolsky's Smart and gets things done, where he talks about the large variance in programming speed, am I near the bottom of the curve, and therefore destined to work in companies that cannot afford to hire quality programmers? I'd like to think that conceptually I'm okay -- I can grasp algorithms and concepts pretty well, I do fine in math and science, although I probably drop signs in my equations more often than the next guy. Still, grokking concepts makes me happy, and is the reason why I want to work with algorithms. I'm hoping to hear from those of you with real-world programming experience. TL;DR: I make many careless mistakes, should I not consider programming as a career?

• Mechanics of reasoning during programming interviews

  This is not the usual "I don't want to write code during an interview", in this question the assumption is that I need to write code during an interview (think about the level of rewriting the quicksort or mergesort from scratch) I know how the algorithm work or I have a basic idea of how I should start working from there, i.e. I don't remember the algorithm by heart I noticed that even on a whiteboard, I always end up writing bugged code or code that doesn't compile. If there's a typo, whatever I usually live with that.. but when there's a crash due to some uncaught particular case I end up losing confidence in my skills. I realize that perhaps interviewers might want to look at how I write code and/or how I solve problems rather than proof-compiling my whiteboard code, but I'd like to ask how should I approach the above problem in mental terms, i.e. what mental steps should I follow when writing code for an interview with the two bullet points above. There must be a unique and agreed series of steps I should follow to avoid getting stuck/caught into particular exception cases (limit cases) that might end up wasting my time and my energies rather than focusing on the overall algorithm for the general case. I hope I made my point clear
