• How to forward UDP Wake-on-Lan port to broadcast IP with IPTABLES?

  I'm trying to setup Wake-on-Lan for some of the LAN computers at home and it seems that I need to open a UDP port (7 or 9 being the most common) and forward all requests to the broadcast IP, which in my case is 192.168.1.255. The problem is that my router does not allow me to forward anything to the broadcast IP. I can connect to my router through telnet and it seems this router uses IPTABLES, but I don't know much about it or how to is. Can someone help me out with the proper iptables commands to do what I want? Also, in case it doesn't work, the commands to put everything back would be nice too. One last thing, rebooting the router will keep those manually added iptables entries or I would need to run them every time?

  Hello, Im looking for some remote-installation software. I've looked briefly at unattended, opsi and a bunch of stuff, but there is nowhere near enough time to evaluate them all, and they are rather complex to setup so some insight would be very appreciated. This is foremost for windows clients, but linux support would be good. Something like apt-get would've been great. Requirements: Simple to setup and use Set up groups of users (developers, management, sales, etc) Chose which software to be installed for different groups Add new software to groups and it will be automatically installed on client Dependencies between software Nice-to-have: Linux client support OS-unattended installation thanks in advance

• Down for everyone or just me?

  When I try access a website, and it is down, I head to http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com, and test it. But lately, my home network PCs cannot access facebook.com, and I tried the that service and the answer was: It's just you. http://facebook.com is up. Ok, that got me. I tried several browsers and 3 PCs in my LAN and it don't works. I don't know how to troubleshoot this. What some step-by-step to troubleshoot that problem? • Custom Button in Google Chrome?

  Is there a way to add a custom button in Google Chrome? I hate all the "Send to Instapaper" extensions in the web store, and love how the bookmarklet works, but I can't stand not having a favicon. Ideally, I'd just add a custom button next to the spanner in the top right, but I can't figure out how to do this. Even installing a custom extension would be fine, so if someone can point me in the right direction for that, that'd be great. • Is there a free-embedded SSH solution ?

  Hi, I'm working for an important company which has some severe network policies. I'd like to connect from my work, to my home linux server (mainly because it allows me to monitor my home-automated installation, but that's off-topic) but of course, any ssh connection (tcp port 22) to an external site is blocked. While I understand why this is done (to avoid ssh tunnels I guess), I really need to have some access to my box. (Well, "need" might be exagerated, but that would be nice ;) Do you know any web-based solution that I could install on my home linux server that would give me some pseudo-terminal (served using https) embedded in a web page ? I'm not necessarily looking for something graphical: a simple web-embedded ssh console would do the trick. Or do you guys see any other solution that wouldn't compromise network security ? • User Friendly port knocker (port knocking client) for Windows?

  It seems "It's me" is the most popular port knocking client for windows… Except… it sucks. It works for console-savvy users such as me, but, unsurprisingly, all my users hate console windows. I know better than to force it upon them. I would love to have a nice port knocker for Windows that would be windowed, have launchers, and be easily provisionable (i.e. I tell my user to paste some settings or import some file by double clicking it). To be honest, just not being console-based would be enough.

• Memory usage on debian webserver keeps going up

  my webserver is running apache 1.3.x for a PHP application, along with mysql on the same machine. Most of the time it runs fine, CPU usage still with nice margin, but somehow memory usage keeps growing throughout uptime. While it looks like it is chunked from time to time, I've had moments my server going down because it's out of memory. Restarting apache or mysql only reduced memusage by 100M. Attached is an overview of monthly memory usage. • Vim's relativenumber setting and multiple buffers

  I like the relative number setting. I'm refactoring code at the moment (translation: explodicating 5 year old terrible methods and replacing them with nice code) and I find it useful to have the setting active on files as I open them I frequently either open multiple buffers or use a client/server vim to contain all my open buffers/files and have noticed that the relative number only seems to apply to the first buffer (and not the remaining buffers when I have set rnu in my .vimrc file.) Is it expected behaviour for rnu to only initially apply to the first buffer until you manually set it?

Hello everyone One of my system is really old, but I still use it, right now, the HDD is and old IDE drive that is starting to fail (I got to many damaged sectors) and I'm planing to replace it. The motherboard supports Serial ATA 1 and I have a real nice offer on a SATA 2 drive, can I use that drive on a SATA 1 interface (obviously with reduced speed) just like a USB 2.0 device on a 1.0 port? • How can we achive a 403 Permissions Denied for a subdomain?

  We have a multisite installed in the root directory (multisite.com) and also a wordpress single installation on a subdomain (help.multisite.com) In the root .htaccess we placed: #START Security: Disallow access to folders Options All -Indexes # END Security On the main site (as expected we get) "403 Permission Denied. You do not have permission for this request /wp-content/blogs.dir/83/" Nice. :) BUT. We just noticed that when trying to access the subdomains folders we get: Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.... Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error... This is something we do NOT want. So the question is: How can we avoid the above result and make the message for the subdomains be "403 Permission Denied" (the same as for the main site and NOT "500 Internal Server Error" (as it is now)? We put what, where?

• aTop like tool for OSX

  I'm trying to debug some issues with my Mac. This machine is used as continuous integration server. It stops responding from time to time. I think it could be some software issue, since the machine is working (so i.e. it's not a kernel panic) - that is when I go to the server room I see the login screen and I can move the mouse. Unfortunately I can't login neither directly nor by VNC or SSH. There is a nice tool that helps in debugging this type of problem called aTop. It's like top but with history. Unfortunately it's Linux-only software. Is there any tool that is similar to aTop for OSX?

• Eclipse And Linux: Keyboard unusable after gnome-screen-saver

  Hi, I know this is not programming related. But I can't find any topics on Google or UbuntuForums. So the problem is: When gnome-screensaver starts on the moment Eclipse has the focus and I wake up again my laptop, Eclipse doesn't listen to keyboard-events. To solve this I have to change the focus to another program and then back to Eclipse. Than it works again. This isn't a real problem, but it would be nice if someone can solve it. Thanks

  Hello, I'd like to experiment some with Xen. My problem is I do not know which OS to try to install it with. I use OpenBSD, but it can not run as Dom0 or DomU at this point. I use Arch Linux on my website's VPS, so I know it and like it. The support for Xen just doesn't seem to be there though. Can anyone suggest a nice (preferably lightweight, so not SUSE and such) Linux distro or *BSD to mess around with Xen in a non-production environment?

• How to recover Virtual Machines in Virtualbox?

  For some reason, all of a sudden, all virtual machines are gone from the User Interface in virtual box. I suspect CCleaner has something to do with it, but that's not the point. Both the virtual hardisks and the .xml files for the machines are still in their respective folders. How can I use them to get my virtual machines back into virtualbox? I tried simply creating a new machine from the old virtual hardisks, and it worked with the ubuntu guest, but not with the windows one. Plus, it'd be nice to get my old machines back instead of having to create new ones, that would keep me from having to fix some shortcuts as well as reconfigure shared folders and other stuff. • Looking for a free/cheap backup solution on OSX for NTFS external HDD [closed]

  Hi, I'm looking for an incremental backup system on OSX that plays nice with USB NTFS-formatted external HDDs. I an currently using NTFS-3G (http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/) to work with the HDD, but since Time Machine doesn't work with NTFS drives, I have just been manually copying files from my HDD to back it up (ugh). I need to use an NTFS drive because I am going back and forth between Windows machines at my school and a mac at home. I have no permissions at my school to install any Windows software, so I am forced to find a OSX solution. Please -- any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

• Installing TKInter for Python 2.6.5

  Well today's been a bit of shock. After running port -v selfupdate followed by an attempt to run sudo port install py26-ipython MacPorts went around installing a whole host of stuff, including updating my Python from 2.6.4 to 2.6.5. It's nice but unexpected in a creepy way. So I tried to install TKInter using MacPorts with port search tkinter yielding: py-tkinter @2.4.6 (python, graphics) Python bindings to the Tk widget set py25-tkinter @2.5.4 (python, graphics) This is a stub. tkinter is now built with python25 Found 2 ports. So I tried sudo port install py25-tkinter and then it tries to install Python 2.5.5. There must be an easier way to install TkInter without being faffed around... help please?

• How can I apply a DSP to my microphone in windows?

  I'd like to be able to run my microphone through arbitrary DSP filters--Mostly for compression and amplification, but also noise cancelation would be nice. I'd then like to take that output and put it back in a virtual audio device that I could use as input for skype, mumble, teamspeak, or any other VOIP program. With a program like Virtual Audio cable, I can do the 'fake devices' part but as far as I know it does not allow any kind of filtering inline. Does a program like this exist? Or some combination of programs that can be combined to accomplish this?

• Simple, user friendly and strong file encryption in Windows

  I want a colleague of mine to send me a sensitive MS-Word document via e-mail. Since Word's encryption is questionable, I would like to encrypt the file using a passphrase. Do you know of any user-friendly encryption tool that a novice user can easily use? I wouldn't like to prompt for keys or anything like this - just provide simple interface for single file encryption. EDIT: I have solved this using Putty Secure Copy, through a Linux box I have somewhere. The user downloaded scp to the same directory where the file was, and I have send him the exact scp command by mail. Nice! • Video Thumbnails using ffmpeg

  I'm looking for a nice short easy way to create a series of thumbnails for any given video file. I'm almost there using ffmpeg, here's what I have: ffmpeg -i /tmp/video.avi -r 1 -ss 60 -r 1 foo-%03d.jpeg` The only problem is that this takes a shot every second and I'd like to make it every minute or so. I tried setting the -r value to 1/60 or .02 to no avail. • Advanced file compression software for Mac OSX

  Back when I used Windows, I always used WinRAR for file compression and decompression. It had a fair amount of options like 'just storage' vs 'hard compression', password protection and archive type. Now that I use Mac OSX, the only compression possibility I have is the default Finder's Compress to Zip. I downloaded the most popular decompression software "Unarchiver". But this app can't compress other archive types either. I went for a search but there seem to be hardly any good advanced compression tools that work nice in OSX and have the options WinRAR has. (WinRAR works in OSX but command line only, I'm looking for something with a GUI.) Any ideas? I strongly prefer freeware. I found Archiver and StiffIt, but they are both commercial.

• Autonegotiate errors between HP and Cisco hardware?

  This is a bit of a specific extension to this question. I've got two ASA's that feed into a Procurve switch, and then into an IPS. All is well except that the procurve absolutely refuses to autonegotiate with the ASA's...The asa's run 100full, and the procurve autonegotiates to 100half. It does it for both ASA's, so it's probably not a failure on one of them, and everything works fine if I force the procurve to 100full. Has anyone else seen this issue? I've been buying more HP hardware, but I'm not keen on getting equipment that's not going to play nice with my Cisco backbone.

• Mark as read on delete in Outlook?

  I'd like Outlook to mark any messages I delete to be marked as read. For bonus points, I'd like it to only do this on messages that I have opened/previewed before pressing delete since this means I've looked at the content and chosen to delete it. I know I can set it to mark as read after x seconds when I'm looking at it, that's not what I want. I also know that I can move off the message & back on to it or right click to mark as read - still not what I want. I'm using Outlook 2007 in case that matters. [Edit: I just found I can at least mark as read with a keyboard shortcut: Ctrl-Q, but again, it'd be nice to not have to do this. More shortcuts here.]

• 802.11n Audio Interference

  Symptoms My audio is riddled with pops/crackles/glitches. Sometimes I swear the glitches sound exactly like the facebook messenger sound (best comparison I can give). Cause Using DPC Latency Checker, it reports the latency to be an abysmal 17,500µs (0.0175s). The first thing I did was disable my 802.11n wireless adapter. This immediately dropped the latency to a nice 250µs. When I re-enabled the adapter, it jumped right back up. I'm 99% certain that this is the cause of my audio glitches. Solution What can I do about it besides using wired Ethernet or buying a whole new adapter? My adapter is a Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-Card. To be honest, I've had nothing but trouble with the 802.11n standard and am contemplating just going back to g.

• Monitoring CPU Usage Over the Course of a Day?

  Are there any apps I an install on client machines that will generate a report for me what app used what % of the CPU. We have some machines that are running, at times, VERY slowly. The machine will run really poorly then boom, back up to full speed. There isn't usually enough time to check Task Manager real quickly to see what is running, not to mention the majority of the time there are people using the computer that don't know what the Task Manager is. ;) It would be really nice to take a look at some logs and see if, maybe, the anti virus is randomly taking alot of CPU for stretches of time. • baffling stat pauses - (reiserfs)

  I've got a SuSE server with reiserfs formatted partitions, all on a RAID1 mirror. I'm noticing odd spikes in iowait, but generally all seems okay. iostat claims not even 3% iowait in general: avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 6.53 0.03 1.45 2.92 0.00 89.07 After tracking down some odd behaviour when ls'ing, it appears "stat" (ls is aliased to include color which does a stat process on each file) randomly takes 5 seconds on a file in the directory. ReiserFS does a file system sync every 5 seconds, but that's interval between not length of time taken to sync. Out of curiosity I did remount using noatime to see if that would help though as it would reduce sync's workload, but no joy. Anyone got any thoughts what might be causing this pause? Disks appear healthy, RAID controller believes the RAID is healthy, and io stats show the disks aren't working very hard at all.
