  I am trying to bypass the china firewall and allow SSH deploy@**.com at the command console. This is because I need to test the games I wrote on apps.facebook.com/**. I tried VPN (both pptp and openvpn), but they aren't that great as connection speed slows down significantly. Since I am deploying the game in another site, my browser needs to download the game, which is super slow. What are ways of bypassing the firewall other than getting a VPN? • apt-fast for ubuntu 14.04?

  I just upgraded to ubuntu 14.04 from ubuntu 12.04 (Which I loved) and now, I cant install apt-fast. My net connection is very slow and I want to download using apt-fast but whenever I add the apt-fast ppa and update and try to install it, It says package apt-fast not found How do I fix this? thank you. I really appreciate The effort made by askubuntu (Which includes you awesome people ;)) To help me. My problem has already been answered. Here is a screenshot of my software sources. • How to improve wireless network speed?

  I am running 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC with a Belkin G-Plus MIMO Wireless network card. Ever since running Ubuntu on the machine I have noticed fairly slow network speeds (about half the speed I get when running the same card through Windows) I did some research I found out that by and large wireless network cards aren't that well supported on most Linux distros. I was wondering though if there is anything I could be tweaking on the system that could help squeeze a little more out of the card? • Simulating simultaneous entities

  Consider the need to simulate a set of entitities in an accurate way. All entities exist in an artificial timeline. Within 'steps' of this timeline, all entities can do certain operations. It is imperative that timed events, are handled accurately, and not in processing order. So simple threading isn't a proper simulation, nor is procedurally walking across all entities. Processing may be slow, accuracy is key here. I have some ideas how to implement this myself, but most likely something like this has been done before. Are there any frameworks available for these purposes? Is there any particular paradigm more suitable?

• Are certification courses worth it?

  I'm planning on getting certification in Database Development for SQL Server (MSTC - 70-433). I'm a junior level report writer at a new job and the company is offering to pay the majority, if not all, of training course fees. The course is five days. I noticed that MS has a self-paced training kit (book) that I could use. I'm wondering if this would be a better option because it will allow me to go as quick as possible. I've also heard about video training sessions (Lynda.com) but they seem to go at slow pace. My questions are: What should I expect at a certification course? Is it hands-on training? Small classes with personal feedback or not? Would I be better off learning at my own pace using the training kit? (I'd rather this not turn into a certifications are pointless discussion..)

• Is MediaTemple's (gs) really worth the hassle? [closed]

  I have been hosting my sites with Dreamhost for a while, and although none of them are high-trafic atm, I am going to a launch a Rails app this summer and a couple of other stuff, so I need a serious host. Since my plan ends in a couple of days, I have been looking at alternatives, and because MT has such a good reputation in the webdesign world, I have been seriously considering paying the ridiculous 20$/month for its shared hosting services. That was until I actually read some reviews of it, most of which indicated it is slow and overpriced. So now I'm wondering whether switching over to (gs) would really be a good idea, or if I would be better off paying less money for something like a Site5 or Hostgator shared hosting plan. What is your experience with MT, and particularly their Grid Service? Do you think I should even switch to (gs) in the first place, or should I choose something else from its competitors?

• Crashing/freezing problems with an Aspire One 722

  After several annoying points with installing ubuntu 11.10 on my acer aspire one 722 i finally made this run. After installing i had freeze issues and solved them by putting network boot on first priority on the bios. Yesterday all worked fine, no problems with wlan etc. But today all is crashing down. Atm iam at the university and tried to log into the public wlan. With that came : i cannot shut down, terminal is not working, very slow perfomance, some apps are starting like libre office, some not like system manager, buttons are not reacting, wlan symbol is spinning all the time. Any suggestions i can do?

A typical solution is to have a CI (Continuous Integration) build running on a build server: It will analyze the source code, make build (in debug) and run tests, measure test coverage, etc. Now, another build type usually known is "Nightly build": do slow stuff like create code documents, make a setup package, deploy to test environment, and run automatic (smoke or acceptance) tests against the test environment, etc. Now, the question: Is it better to have a third separate "Release build" as release build? Or do "Nightly build" in release mode and use it as a release? What are you using in your company? (The release build should also add some kind of tag to source control of potential product version.)

• Can not resolve hostnames on Xubuntu computers

  I have a network of computers which has been running for many years. I have changed two of those to Xubuntu 11.10 and found I can no longer connect by ssh using the host-name from any other machine. I can connect and ping by IP although ping is very slow in one case (~200ms). All other machines are fine including another with Ubuntu 11.10. Host-name resolution works from Xubuntu machines to other networked machines. I am using wins resolution and have checked settings in /etc/nsswitch.conf are the same as my working Ubuntu systems. What is different in Xubuntu networking that I might have missed?

• Ruby on Rails background API polling

  I need to integrate a free/busy calendar integration with Zimbra. Unlike outlook, it seems, Zimbra requires polling their API. I need to be able to grab the free/busy data in background tasks for 10's of thousands of users on a regular time interval, preferably every few minutes. What would be the best way to implement this in a Rails application without bogging down our current resque tasks? I have considered moving this process to something like node.js or something similar in Ruby. The biggest problem is that we have no control over the IO, as each clients Zimbra instances could be slow and we don't want to create a huge backup in tasks. Thoughts and ideas?

• Good text editor for Ruby on Rails programming?

  I'm trying to find a text editor that I can use for doing Ruby on Rails development. I have been using TextMate on my Mac and would love to find something that even comes close to that experience. My Ubuntu laptop is a little old, and doesn't have a lot of memory, so I need something lightweight. I don't need/want a bloated IDE because the performance on my slow laptop would be terrible.   In relation to this question: http://gamedev.stackexchange.com/a/28524/31664 And a question I asked earlier: Creating a DrawableGameComponent And also because my internet is too slow to get on chat. I'm wondering how to check if the sides of a cube are solid. I've created 12 methods, each one creating indices and vertices for sides of a cube. Now when I use these methods, the cube creates how it should. All 6 sides show up and its like I didnt change a thing. How can use if statements to check if the side of a cube is solid? The pseudocode from the question above shows this: if(!isSolidAt(x+1,y,z)) verticesToDraw += AddXPlusFace(x,y,z) But in my case is would be: if(!sideIsSolid) SetUpFrontFaceIndices(); My method simply takes these index and vertex values and adds them to a list indicesToDraw and verticesToDraw, as shown in the answer above

• Problem upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10

  Part way through upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 the process ground to a halt with an error message. Now on retrying by going to 'Check for updates' I get the following: Failed to load the package list This is a serious problem. Try again later. If this problem appears again, please report an error to the developers. E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_saucy_universe_i18n_Translation-en%%5fGB, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. Problem reported but my question is, "what can I do now?; Do I have to do a fresh install?; if so will settings etc. in my Home folder (on its own partition) be saved?" 13.04 still seems to be working perfectly, while upgrading I had a terrible internet connection varying between 'dead slow' and 'dead stop', not sure if that caused the problem.

(300+ typically) No partial matching when typing: yes, you can type in the list to get to the desired entry, but the matching is performed in an exact manner, from the beginning of the assembly name.   I am running ubuntu 11.10 32bit in my dell xps L502. Working good except few problems. Blue tooth always turned on reboot,I would like to turn it off always. Screen brightness is not saved.Every time I reboot, the screen goes back to full brightness.How to save that? and the most important problem is internet speed through wi-fi is really very slow when operating on battery.the card is intel centrino Advanced-N 1030 with integrated blue tooth.   I am a student right now. Recently, I am working in a project as a leader with three other students. Due to the lack of experience, our project is progressing slowly and our members are frustrated. They do not feel sense of accomplishment in the project. I am pressured and frustrated, too. But as a team leader, I think I need to push them. But I do not know how to do. • What does intermittent "Input/output error" suggest?

  Lately my Ubuntu 12 system has started acting very strange. Sometimes the computer freezes and then unfreezes 2 minutes later, and other times when I try a basic command like less I get the error bash: /usr/bin/less: Input/output error. But this is intermittent too. Any suggestions? Also if I try sudo reboot and enter my password, I get sudo: unable to open /var/lib/sudo/plato/7: Read-only file system Before I used to be able to do sudo reboot fine. If I tail /var/log/syslog I do see these curious lines: .... ata1: softreset failed (device not ready) .... ata1: hard resettting link .... ata1: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0) What can I do to fix this?

• Strategy for building an application to replace a large spreadsheet

  I'm working on an application that is going to replace a rather large spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is used to budget purchases and things like that. It is the largest spreadsheet I have ever seen, and it required a lot of manual data entry, so this application is going to automate much of that. But as I'm working on this I've noticed its slow going. And I got to thinking this must be a common thing to do many companies will start with something like a spreadsheet, then when they get too big to maintain that, they will get a custom application built. So is there anything out there ( a framework or similar ) that does this sort of thing, migrating a spreadsheet to a custom application. I've had a quick Google but not really seen the kind of thing that I'm looking for. It's too late for this project, but I thought it would be worth having a look for next time. How do you guys tackle this problem?

  so i just put ubuntu onto my computer and the install went ok. but it keeps giving me a language error in the login screen. i so far have just ignored it. but when i log in it just goes to a blank red screen. idk what to do to fix this. i can boot it into safe mode and it loads the desktop but it is very slow. i do not have an internet connection at the moment for this computer. i have 12.10 on it.

• C++ Game engine time scale

  i have begun creating a very simple game engine and i am trying to work out how to create a time scale for the game.by time scale i mean some way of increasing and decreasing the speed of the game(not the fps) like creating a slow motion effect ... i have no idea how this could be accomplished so any help would be appreciated. if this help im using windows, Opengl and C++ in the game engine... • Installation of Ubuntu 13.04 seems to take forever

  I am about to install Ubuntu 13.04 on my AMD x64 machine and the installation of the lib packages seems to take forever. Is that a known issue? I know that it might take some time when checking to download packages from the Internet but this went through very fast. In the terminal-like view I can see, the system is just unpacking, installing, configuring etc. in a quite slow way. In the opening screen it reads: It just takes a few minutes (or something close to that). Again: Is that a normal behavior or am I doing something wrong and what could I do to speed up the process in case I'm running an installation again on another system?

• PDF or ebook Java API documentation

  Since I have a long train ride to and from work I was wondering if there is a version of the Java API documentation floating around that I could put on my Kindle. It would be nice on the rare occasion I get something in my head that I want to think about some more. I know I can browse the web through the Kindle but coverage is spotty and slow. I know that the api docs are not really designed for a sequential reading format but I'm curious to see if anyone else has thought about this and given it a shot.
