• "My stuff" vs. "Your stuff" in UI texts

  When refering to a users stuff should you use My or Your, for example: My Cart | My Account | My Wishlist Or Your Cart | Your Account | Your Wishlist I found this article that argues for the use of your. It says flikr does this. It also says MySpace and MyYahoo are wrong. I also noticed today that Amazon uses the term Your. However, I have heard they are the masters at testing variations and finding the best one, so what you see on their site might be the best variation, or simply something they are currently testing. I personally like the way my looks better, but thats just my opinion. What do you think? What will hever the better impact on customers? Does it really even matter?

• Custom Themes Introduced in Gmail

  As we all know, Google Team introduced a number of HD themes last November. Now they are giving us an option of customizing our own background. We can put in our own images, select from our Google+ photos or just paste any image URL. Or we can browse the Featured Photos section to find the image that we like. They are introducing custom themes with two options, Light and Dark. In the Featured tab, we can simply search for specific kind of pictures like “hdr scenery” or “bokeh wallpaper” and so on. We can easily maintain our personal or work accounts with different background images that suites the best. The company announced this information in their blog today.

• Setter Validation can affect performance?

  Whitin a scenario where you use an ORM to map your entities to the DB, and you have setter validations (nullable, date lower than today validation, etc) every time the ORM get a result, it will pass into the setter to instance the object. If I have a grid that usually returns 500 records, I assume that for each record it passes on all validations. If my entity has 5 setter validations, than I have passed in 2.500 validations. Does those 2.500 validations will affect the performance? If was 15.000 validation, it will be different? In my opinion, and according to this answer (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4893558/calling-setters-from-a-constructor/4893604#4893604), setter validation is usefull than constructors validation. Is there a way to avoid unecessary validation, since I am safe that the values I send to DB when saving the entity wont change until I edit it on my system?

• Sony steps back from Linux?

  In Cnet today I saw something interesting: According to Sony, it plans to release PlayStation 3 firmware version 3.21 on Thursday to achieve one goal: eliminate the "Other OS" option currently available in all pre-Slim models of the video game console. The feature allowed PS3 owners to install an operating system--in almost every case, Linux--onto the PlayStation 3. • WIX 3.5 Unexpected Child Element iis:Certificate

  Came across this today when I switched from WIX 3.0 and VS 2008 to WIX 3.5 and VS 2010.  The solution ended up being pretty simple.  Just need to update the Wix Project Properties to provide an additional parameter to the compiler and linker. These can be found at Wix Installer Project Properties > Tool Settings > Additional Parameters Compiler and Wix Installer Project Properties > Tool Settings > Additional Parameters Linker.  Just make sure to add ‘-ext WixIIsExtension’ in the fields and recompile.   Technorati Tags: WIX,WIX 3.5,Help

• Is creating a full application in Silverlight advisable?

  Is creating a huge public site fully in Silverlight really advisable? for eg. an ecommerce site. I don't want to start any debate but actually I feel Silverlight shouldn't be used for full website because the biggest loss you incur is of SEO. No search engines till today can parse the xap file and index it based on it's content. You can get around it by doing ifs and thens like if Silverlight is not supported then make an Asp.Net equivalent page for it but that only doubles our effort of making application, more than anything else. Why write double code in 2 applications meant for the same purpose. If that is the only option why not create Asp.Net application only. What are your views? Thanks in advance :)

• How to Play PC Games on Your TV

  No need to wait for Valve’s Steam Machines — connect your Windows gaming PC to your TV and use powerful PC graphics in the living room today. It’s easy — you don’t need any unusual hardware or special software. This is ideal if you’re already a PC gamer who wants to play your games on a larger screen. It’s also convenient if you want to play multiplayer PC games with controllers in your living rom. HDMI Cables and Controllers You’ll need an HDMI cable to connect your PC to your television. This requires a TV with HDMI-in, a PC with HDMI-out, and an HDMI cable. Modern TVs and PCs have had HDMI built in for years, so you should already be good to go. If you don’t have a spare HDMI cable lying around, you may have to buy one or repurpose one of your existing HDMI cables. Just don’t buy the expensive HDMI cables — even a cheap HDMI cable will work just as well as a more expensive one. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI-out port on your PC and one end into the HDMI-In port on your TV. Switch your TV’s input to the appropriate HDMI port and you’ll see your PC’s desktop appear on your TV.  Your TV becomes just another external monitor. If you have your TV and PC far away from each other in different rooms, this won’t work. If you have a reasonably powerful laptop, you can just plug that into your TV — or you can unplug your desktop PC and hook it up next to your TV. Now you’ll just need an input device. You probably don’t want to sit directly in front of your TV with a wired keyboard and mouse! A wireless keyboard and wireless mouse can be convenient and may be ideal for some games. However, you’ll probably want a game controller like console players use. Better yet, get multiple game controllers so you can play local-multiplayer PC games with other people. The Xbox 360 controller is the ideal controller for PC gaming. Windows supports these controllers natively, and many PC games are designed specifically for these controllers. Note that Xbox One controllers aren’t yet supported on Windows because Microsoft hasn’t released drivers for them. Yes, you could use a third-party controller or go through the process of pairing a PlayStation controller with your PC using unofficial tools, but it’s better to get an Xbox 360 controller. Just plug one or more Xbox controllers into your PC’s USB ports and they’ll work without any setup required. While many PC games to support controllers, bear in mind that some games require a keyboard and mouse. A TV-Optimized Interface Use Steam’s Big Picture interface to more easily browse and launch games. This interface was designed for using on a television with controllers and even has an integrated web browser you can use with your controller. It will be used on the Valve’s Steam Machine consoles as the default TV interface. You can use a mouse with it too, of course. There’s also nothing stopping you from just using your Windows desktop with a mouse and keyboard — aside from how inconvenient it will be. To launch Big Picture Mode, open Steam and click the Big Picture button at the top-right corner of your screen. You can also press the glowing Xbox logo button in the middle of an Xbox 360 Controller to launch the Big Picture interface if Steam is open. Another Option: In-Home Streaming If you want to leave your PC in one room of your home and play PC games on a TV in a different room, you can consider using local streaming to stream games over your home network from your gaming PC to your television. Bear in mind that the game won’t be as smooth and responsive as it would if you were sitting in front of your PC. You’ll also need a modern router with fast wireless network speeds to keep up with the game streaming. Steam’s built-in In-Home Streaming feature is now available to everyone. You could plug a laptop with less-powerful graphics hardware into your TV and use it to stream games from your powerful desktop gaming rig. You could also use an older desktop PC you have lying around. To stream a game, log into Steam on your gaming PC and log into Steam with the same account on another computer on your home network. You’ll be able to view the library of installed games on your other PC and start streaming them. NVIDIA also has their own GameStream solution that allows you to stream games from a PC with powerful NVIDIA graphics hardware. However, you’ll need an NVIDIA Shield handheld gaming console to do this. At the moment, NVIDIA’s game streaming solution can only stream to the NVIDIA Shield. However, the NVIDIA Shield device can be connected to your TV so you can play that streaming game on your TV. Valve’s Steam Machines are supposed to bring PC gaming to the living room and they’ll do it using HDMI cables, a custom Steam controller, the Big Picture interface, and in-home streaming for compatibility with Windows games. You can do all of this yourself today — you’ll just need an Xbox 360 controller instead of the not-yet-released Steam controller. • Meta description of my blog post changes

  I have some problems in Meta description tags in my Blogger blog. When I update my pages in search engine with the help of the Fetch as Google feature in GWT, all my blog's results comes with a correct meta description like Today I am back with a reason that "WHY IS ORIGINAL MEMORY IN HARD-DISK IS LESS THAN PRINTED" on a box. If we buy any hard-disk or a pen drive... But after approx 5-6 days, it changes to my blog's default meta description. This is also happening after changing the default meta description of my blog. I want only one answer that why its happening? After deleting my blog and creating a new blog with the same name this problem was solved. Why this problem was solved? - I am asking this question because to solve problems in the future.

• Craftsmanship Tour Day 0: New York

  Arriving at JFK, at dawn, is beautiful. From above 1,000ft I can see no crime, poverty or ugliness – just the dark orange sunrise-through-smog. The Atlantic appears calm, and I take that as a good sign. Today is the first day of my software craftsmanship tour. I will be visiting three of the shining lights of the software industry over five days, exchanging ideas and learning. Arriving on the red eye from Seattle I feel like hell. My lips, not used to the dry air, are cracked and bleeding. I get changed in the JFK restroom and make my way from the airport. Following Rik’s directions I take the airtrain to Jamaica. Rik is an engineering manager at Didit in Long Island, the first stop on my tour. From Jamaica I take the Long Island Rail Road train to Rockville Centre, home of Didit.

  As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I'll be having a little fun over the next few weeks talking about all of the Social Media APIs I've been experimenting with. I thought I would start out today by talking about one of the most popular services, Twitter. Twitter is essentially a microblogging service that allows its users to post messages of up to 140 characters long known as Tweets. Users can subscribe to each other and see tweets from all of their subscriptions in their main feed listings. Due to this ease of providing and receiving updates to and from the masses, Twitter has been adopted by anything from bloggers to celebrities to large corporations. • Return to the old C days.

  Long back I used to program on C and than VB exploitation changed the career path. After VB came the .NET that proved to be a HoneyPot of Microsoft for old VB programmers and frustrated programmers of other hard to learn languages. The label on this HoneyPot was: "Getting things done." I now want to contribute to the Linux and other GNU projects. I feel whatever programming language you learn today, but if programming is your bread-and-butter, you must remain in touch with C. Many things have changed now. From the old Turbo-C for DOS to the present ...? Please advise me how to get back on the C track again. Reading again whole thing, chapter-by-chapter is not possible now, but I can learn by writing small utilities type of things, but sure GUI based. And yes, I hope, learning is going to be easy now with so many live forums and active community spots like StackOverflow etc.

• Conditional formatting of duplicate values in Excel

  One of the infrequent pleasures of being a data geek like me is that one does occasionally stumble across little-known yet incredibly useful features in a tool that you use day-in, day-out. Today this happened to me and the feature is Excel’s ability to highlight dupicate rows in a worksheet. Check this out: Notice that I have got some data in my worksheet that contains duplicated values and simply by selecting Conditional Formatting->Highlight Cells Rules->Duplicate Values… Excel will highlight (shown here in red) which rows are duplicated. It seem such a simple thing but when you’re working on a data integration project and the data that is being sent is of, well, let’s say dubious quality features like this are worth their weight in gold. I tweeted about this and it happened to catch a few people’s attention so I figured it might be worth blogging too. Note that I am using Excel 2013 but I happen to know that the feature exists in Excel 2010 and possibly in earlier versions too. Have a great weekend! @Jamiet

• Pressing p in dash results in weird B

  Today I tried to open Skype in my dash and discovered that my "p" key does not work properly. Instead of p I get B. In every other application the key works properly. When I copy the text "skyBe" from dash into another application it sais "skype". I tried every other character and they seem fine, it's only the "p" key. I think that the problem is dash. Anyone else has the same problem? Here is an image. I enter "skype" and get this: What causes this problem and how can I fix it? • The understanding of flight search engine

  Today I just discovered a search engine website who offered a service to enter your departure destination, and then search for which possible destinations you can have for the cheapest price. This is very nice to use, if one wants to flight somewhere but doesn't know which "good deals" are available. This is the site: http://www.kayak.com/explore/ Can someone explain to me, which programs are (mostly) used, and summarize how to make this sort of search engine. I think this is very interesting but unfortunately there are not shown all the possible flight tickets and therefore I think this project could be improved.
