    Hi, I need to use Session variables in my Silverlight application ( Using Visual Studio 2008, and Silverlight 3). I am already using a webservice (not WCF service) and would like to know if I can add two methods say GetSessionVariable and SetSessionVariable in my existing WebService Class?   • DomainService method not compiling; claims "Return types must be an entity ..."

    I have a WCF RIA Domain Service that contains a method I'd like to invoke when the user clicks a button: [Invoke] public MyEntity PerformAnalysis(int someId) { return new MyEntity(); } However, when I try to compile I'm given the following error: Operation named 'PerformAnalysis' does not conform to the required signature. Return types must be an entity, collection of entities, or one of the predefined serializable types. The thing is, as far as I can tell, MyEntity is an entity: [Serializable] public class MyEntity: EntityObject, IMyEntity { [Key] [DataMember] [Editable(false)] public int DummyKey { get; set; } [DataMember] [Editable(false)] public IEnumerable<SomeOtherEntity> Children { get; set; } } I figure I'm missing something simple here. Could someone please tell me how I can create an invokable method that returns a single MyEntity object?

    Hi there, can anyone help? I am having a problem stepping into code which is a website hosted on IIS7. Basically i have a test class which calls a WCF service like so ISecurityService service = new SecurityServiceClient(); MembershipUser membershipUser = null; membershipUser = service.GetMembershipUser("Mark"); // THIS LINE FAILS!!! I get the following error but i have everything enabled as far as i know i.e. <compilation debug="true" targetFramework="4.0" /> Here is the error msg, i would appreciated any feedback.. If I don't try and step into the line above then all works ok Microsoft Visual Studio Unable to automatically step into the server. The remote procedure could not be debugged.     I'm new to ASP.NET :) I have a WCF web service, and I want to use Basic authentication. I am getting lost in the authentication options: In IIS 6 Manager, I can go in to the properties of the web site and set authentication options. In the web site's web.config file, under system.web, there is an <authentication mode="Windows"/> tag In the web site's web.config file, under system.serviceModel, I can configure: <wsHttpBinding <binding name="MyBinding" <security mode="Transport" <transport clientCredentialType="Basic"/ </security </binding </wsHttpBinding What is the difference between these three? How should each be configured? Some context: I have a simple web site project that contains a single .svc web service, and I want it to use Basic authentication over SSL. (Also, I want it to not use Windows accounts, but maybe that is another question.)

  • How to (pre)start xamlx workflow service

    Related to this question. I have a xamlx workflow service that loads part of its definition from a database when it runs (using ActivityXamlServices.Load). Reason for this is that I need versioning, see the related question. I'll use WCF routing to direct calls to the right service. The part that I load dynamically contains a Receive activity. However, this activity is 'invisible' as long as the workflow doesn't start because the part of the workflow I load from the database is only loaded when the workflow starts. So from the outside it appears as if there is no Receive activity in the workflow. Apart from not being able to generate a contract for the workflow service, I can't call the service either. My first attempt was to do a soap call with the right contract on the workflow service. However, the runtime doesn't automagically activate my workflow in that case. So the question is, how do I start a workflow that is hosted inside IIS? Regards, Ronald

    I have a Silverlight 3.0 application that is using a WCF service to communicate with the database, and when I have large amounts of data being returned from the service methods I get Service Not Found errors. I am fairly confident that the solution to it is to simply update the maxItemsInObjectGraph property, but I am creating the service client progrogrammatically and cannot find where to set this property.     Hi, When one develops a self-hosted WCF http server, one of the steps needed is to bind an SSL certificate to a port number: httpcfg set ssl -i 0.0.0.0:8012 -h 0000000000003ed9cd0c315bbb6dc1c08da5e6 as stated in: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms733791.aspx However, It is hardly expected that in my deployment environment one would be able to do it. (I don't even know if the httpcfg.exe is redistributable) Moreover, if the user changed the port after he installed the product then he will need to run the command again.... how can this step be automated pro grammatically? preferably in C# but if it can only be done in C++ (direct access to the Http Server API) then I will manage :)

  • "port forwarding": redirect calls to webservice at port 8081 to port 80

    Hi, a colleague of mine wrote a webservice that runs on port 8081 of our Windows 2008 Server. He uses the class ServiceHost, afaik this means its a standalone host (no IIS or ASP involvement). Note: I'm new into WCF ;) Now there are some issues with clients behind a firewall blocking the requests to remote port 8081 of our server (where the webservice runs). The easiest solution would be: run the webservice host at port 80 ... But: there is also a Apache 2.2 webserver running on the Windows Server, hosting some websites. By default it runs on port 80. My solution after some researching: use a virtual host to route requests to a virtual host (lets say http://webservice.[hostname]:80) to the webservice host (http://[hostname]:8081). Is this a good idea? Can Apache handle forwards to standalone webservice hosts? It would be nice if someone could lead me on to the right track :) Best regards, Niels

  • Preserving DataRowState when serializing DataSet using DataContractSerializer

    For various reasons I am having to send a typed dataset to a WCF service endpoint. This works fine except that upon Deserializing, the RowState of each row in each DataTable is set to 'Added', regardless of what they were on the client. If I write the serialized stream out to a file, I see that the RowState is not part of the Serialized data. How can I add this so that I can preserve the RowState across service boundaries? Not that I think it matters, but the client process is running .net 3.5 while the service process is running .net 4.0

  • How do I start a second console application in Visual Studio when one is already running

    Hi All, I am working through some examples in a WCF book. There is a Host project and Client project within a single solution. Both are console applications. The Host is the startup app, but the Client app doesn't seem to open the Console like the book says. Book says while the Host is running, run the Client. The Run button is disabled tho as it is already running. The book example definitely has them in the same solution and a single instance of Visual Studio. Anyways, what am I missing here? I have done this with two instances of VS, but I truly have never does this in a single instance. Any help is always appreciated. Cheers, ~ck in San Diego

  • NetTcpBinding() with TransferMode.Streamed

    Hi, I am getting a timeout exception when trying to use a net tcp endpoint through code that has no security and is streamed like so: NetTcpBinding binding = new NetTcpBinding(SecurityMode.None); binding.TransferMode = TransferMode.Streamed; binding.SendTimeout = TimeSpan.MaxValue; the same code would work if i just leave out the SecurityMode.None or choose SecurityMode.Transport, the exception is on a timeout that is too low, i tired adding all the timeouts for recive, send, open, close and set them all to Max and that didnt work. im using sample code from: http://csharp-codesamples.com/2009/02/data-transfer-using-self-hosted-wcf-service/ Any explenation as to how to use no security in this scenario would be appriciated.   • Datacontracts property getter running twice

    I have a set of data contracts that act as wrappers to base classes that we wish to expose. A quick example is: [DataMember] public List<decimal> Points { get { return sourceObject.ListPoints(); } private set{} } We have some other properties that we have to massage the data first (we are converting object graphs and need to guard against circular references). The issue that we are seeing is that this getter will fire twice, once within the service operation, then again during serialization. This is causing two problems: We manually add to collections, since this is running twice the collections are filled with dupes. If an exception is thrown during the second run, it happens outside of the try/catch in the operation, and does not throw a fault. The service throws a cryptic timeout message, and the only way to see the error is via WCF trace logs.

  • Query Cache Issues - releasing cache locks?

    I have enabled query caching to use the NHibernate.Caches.Prevalence.PrevalenceCacheProvider provider. This is running on IIS 7, WCF service. I have limited rights to what I can do, but I'm getting an exception about releasing cache locks. I've created the following 2 directories in the system32/inetsrv directory and given full control to the account IIS is using. NHibernate.Cache.StandardQueryCache Some other cache dir I can think of right now This doesn't happen in my local environment so I'm thinking this is somehow related to caching. Do I need to give the IIS account full control to the inetsrv dir as well?

  • what is the global.asax Application_Start equivalent when using WAS in IIS7

    Hi I'd like to use the netTcpBinding for my WCF application which is currently hosted in IIS7, which means configuring it to use WAS instead. This is fairly straight forward however, my application previously made use of the Application_Start event in the global.asax file. I do not require access to the httpContext(which I understand access has been removed in IIS7), however I would still like to hook into the start or init methods? Does an equivalent exist when hosting an application in WAS as apposed to IIS7? Using classic mode is not an option(again I'm not interested in the httpcontext and this only appears to work if using an http binding) - and I've seen an example of putting a static class instide the app_code folder which looks like a horrible hack.

  • ASP.NET MVC as a service host for SOA like architecture

    I'm creating a distributed application that includes a lot of services and I'm looking for the technology that allows me to create and manage a lot of services easily. I know managing and deploying windows services is not fun. I'm thinking of using ASP.NET MVC as service host of my services where each controller action becomes essentially a service and I can communicate with a service via simple HTTP request and responses and not have to deal with complexity if i use something like WCF. Services need to be isolated and asp.net requests are isolated as far as i know, i.e. if a request throws an exception it will not effect other running requests. But I still have questions about the management of the services. How will it be possible to see which services are running, stopping and resuming services. Also ASP.NET MVC are passive, i.e. they only do something upon a request but what if i want to service that initiates work by itself?

The real goal is to let users generate some XML to load into memory, and the users are of a skill level that asking them for the original XML is not going to be successful.

  • Creating Instance of a DataContract Class on the client side

    I'm not sure, if it's right to do this, but I'd like to ask this question again ( http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2498644/creating-instance-of-a-service-side-datacontract-class-on-client-side-in-wcf ). The main question is - why there's difference between creating instance on the client side and creating it on the server side? Why there're some properties, that lose their values when you create them on the client side and pass it to service's functions? What could be the issue? Any version will be appreciated.   • Service Call very slow if going through HttpHandler

    I have a WCF client pointing to a WebSphere service. All is good in normal situation except when my calls to the service originate from an HttpHandler - in this case the calls are extremely slow (it takes up to 10 times longer). If I send the exact same envelopes through Soap-UI or without an HttpHandler it's all good. If the envelope is the same the only thing left is the HttpHeader. Would the fact that I am going through an HttpHandler cause changes HttpHeaders compared to normal scenarios? What should I be looking for and is there some config setting that might do the trick? Any help appreciated!

  • Optimizing Smart Client Performance

    I have a smart client (WPF) that makes calls to the server va services (WCF). The screen I am working on holds a list of objects that it loads when the constructor is called. I am able to add, edit and delete records in the list. Typically what I am doing is after every add or delete I am reloading the entire model from the service again, there are a number off reasons for this including the fact that the data may have changed on the server between calls. This approach has proved to be a big hit on perfomance because I am loading everything sending the list up and down the wire on Add and Edit. What other options are open to me, should I only be send the required information to the server and how would I go about not reloading all the data again ever time an add or delete is performed?
