Currently I'm working with Ubuntu, which has /usr/sbin/apache2ctl /usr/sbin/service no apachectl no httpd and Scientific Linux CERN 5, which has /usr/sbin/apachectl /etc/init.d/httpd no apache2ctl no service I'd like to avoid using a hack like which service 2>/dev/null || which /etc/init.d/httpd

  • Is there a way to suppress keyboard sounds picked up by a desktop microphone in Windows 7?

    The problem I'd like to solve is that my desktop microphone picks up all my keystrokes very loudly compared with my voice. Even just lightly tapping a key without depressing it causes a loud click to be picked up. I'd like a way to filter out this type of sound, while picking up voice normally. Is there any software input equalizer/filter that could do this? Or alternatively, some sort of hardware hack?

  • How do I force my Graphite Airport to distribute 192.168.x addresses instead of 10.x.x addresses?

    I'm sharing a single IP address but there's no way to change what network it uses for distributing the private addresses via DHCP. My problem is that my VPN to work already uses the 10.x.x network, so I'd like my home to use 192.168.x. I've tried messing with the Network tab within the Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow but nothing works. I'm hoping there's some way to hack the configuration file.

    How does one define a static route on MacOS X which persists through reboots? The only suggestion I've found on Google advises setting up a launchd service to run at boot, which seems like a horrible hack (does it survive a network restart without rebooting, for instance?) To set up the route I need temporarily, I can run the following: route add -net ${network} ${gateway} ${netmask} How would I make this persist?

    Our school's VLE has a few problems when running in IE8/IE9's Compatibility View. Mainly it causes difficulties with uploading files. This problem is easily remedied by un-ticking the Display intranet sites in Compatibility View option from Internet Explorer's Compatibility View options. However, I'm unable to find a way of doing this en masse. I can't find anything regarding this in GPO - would a registry hack or similar do the trick? Thanks in advance,

    Whenever I drag or resize a window near any edge or corner of either monitor, Windows wants to maximize or resize the window for me in several different ways: dragging a window near a corner offers resize to full-screen dragging directly to the corner offers half-screen maximize resizing to top or bottom edges offers a vertical maximize (one long strip from top to bottom) Actually, now that I think about it the 3rd one isn't so bad, its just the full and half-screen maximize features that drives me mad. Is there a registry hack to disable these settings, preferably independently?

    Is there any software or hack in existence that will allow iTunes to sync wirelessly with my iPhone or iPod touch? I'd like the iPhone to be constantly synced without having to plug it into the USB at my computer via the 802.11 connection, or even better I would like it to happen over 3G when I am not at home. I want to connect a computer that's outside of my home network (in someone else's house) to do the WHS via the internet. How do I do this?     Is there any way to use Windows 8 with time in UTC in BIOS? I know there is a way to do it in Windows 7 (in this question: Does Windows 7 support UTC as BIOS time?), but this solution makes my system unbootable. Windows expects the bios clock to be set to local time by default. In Windows 7 and before, there was a registry hack to change this behavior so that it could expect UTC – is there an equivalent in Windows 8?

I've tried the hack :set lines=999 columns=999, it almost works, but the window is not maximized, just resized and I lose some rows/columns.

  • Possible to bypass laptop inverter power source - HP dv5000 inverter 7 input pins?

    I've got an HP dv5000 laptop with a backlight that won't light up, (but is known to be good). I've also got an inverter board which is good, but isn't getting power from the mobo. So, my question is, would it be possible to bypass the original power source, and hack together some type of externally powered input just for the backlight? If so, does anybody know the input voltage and meaning for the 7 input pins for the inverter board, or how to find out?

Every time that I start up Firefox with the intent to go to a specific page, I end up typing half the URL in the Google search box when iGoogle steals focus away from the URL bar.   • Is there a way to set the Powerpoint Slide Sorter Zoom above 100%?

    In the PowerPoint slider sorter view, is there a way to set the zoom level larger than 100%? On PowerPoint for Mac this slider goes to much higher values, essentially allowing zoom all the way in to a single slide, but on the Windows version (depending on screen resolution and slide dimensions) the maximum zoom is often several slides wide. Evidently it's possible to achieve a similar affect by changing the page size, but is there some sort of preferences hack that will change the maximum value of this slider?
