• OData.org updated, gives clues about future SQL Azure enhancements

  The OData website at http://www.odata.org/home has been updated today to provide a much more engaging page than the previous sterile attempt. Moreover its now chockful of information about the progress of OData including a blog, a list of products that produce OData feeds plus some live OData feeds that you can hit up today, a list of OData-compliant clients and an FAQ. Most interestingly SQL Azure is listed as a producer of OData feeds: If you have a SQL Azure database account you can easily expose an OData feed through a simple configuration portal. You can select authenticated or anonymous access and expose different OData views according to permissions granted to the specified SQL Azure database user. • SMTP Relay through exchange

  Hi guys, We have a bit of a problem in that we want our printers to email our contractor whenever they develop a fault. The problem is on our corporate network we have no access through the firewall to the internet preventing us to use the external SMTP server. So i suppose the question is can we use our exchange server to do this? IE could I run an SMTP service that would forward to the exchange server which would then send the mail to the contractor? • HTTP SSL VPN Client? (alternative to Cisco's AnyConnect VPN)

  Is there any free HTTP SSL VPN clients around, one that can act as an alternative to Cisco's own HTTP SSL VPN client (called AnyConnect)? The Cisco AnyConnect client has acknowledged problems, with no forthcoming solutions. Which is why I'm hoping for an alternative. Note: I'm only talking about the HTTP SSL VPN Client, not the HTTP SSL VPN Server. (If it were up to me they wouldn't be using Cisco at all, but it's not up to me.) Note: OpenVPN is a client that talks to their servers once you sign up for their service. It's not a generic VPN client. Note: ShrewSoft VPN is a client that uses IPsec and pre-shared keys, and was a good replacement for Cisco's old client - but not the new AnyConnect SSL VPN client. Note: Windows 7's VPN client fails to negotiate when presented with an SSL VPN connection. Note: I am looking for Windows clients only.

• Running a powershell script at startup

  I am writing a script to remove a computer from the domain, rename it, then add it back. It works fine when I set the trigger to AtLogOn but when I switch to AtStartUp I run into some issues. I get this error when it restarts to run the first scheduled task: 0x8007051F: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I suspect the script tries to run with no network connection set up so I tested using the RandomDelay parameter, and it worked like its suppose to. I cant rely on a random delay so I am looking for an alternative. Is there a way to test the network status before the script begins or a way to delay the script a specific amount of time? I am using Register-ScheduledJob provided by Powershell 3.0 Thanks in advance

  I'm setting a local webserver to do a lot of web development work from now on. I'm not really knowledgeable in hosting configuration. Thing is I just added mydomain.com in /etc/hosts that's fine but what's the next step? TI need to use the wildcard on *.mydomain.com, so I'm figuring I need to add my zone in bind, is this correct? so I can make use of virtual hosts in apache and in play-framework Everything will be local, but once in a while I want to make public of my webserver to certain people using the no-ip service, in windows I've done it, in linux I don't know if it's any difference. The question is pretty much if I'm configuring it right or not? If this sounds confusing let me know, I'll try to detail it more

• Using Google Talk with a non-apps, non-gmail Google account

  I created a Google account with an existing e-mail address from a domain that is NOT hosted by Google. This address is not on an Apps domain and has no gmail service of any kind. Still I am able to add it as a Google account on an Android device with no problem. If the device is running Jelly Bean (where the Google Talk app allows switching between accounts) I can sign in and chat works fine. I can also sign into Talk with this account via the iGoogle home page. Now how can I use this account with a standalone chat client like iChat, Pidgin, or Empathy? It doesn't seem to work with login ID [email protected] using SSL to connect to server talk.google.com (tried ports 5222 and 5223). Are iGoogle and Android doing something magical that no other Jabber client is allowed, or am I just missing a step?

• Component Development within SOA

  How do the concepts of component development work within SOA? Let’s first break this question down by defining what component development is. Component development is the process of implementing specific functionality in the form of small units of complied code that can be reused across multiple applications or product families. Typically, components are integrated with other components forming composite components. In general, most interaction between components is done through interfaces to promote loose coupling. The concept of loose coupling refers to the interconnections of components in a system so that their component dependences based on contracts defined by interfaces. A real life example of this can be experienced while using Legos to build a structure. If we consider each Lego block as a component, then when two more Legos are connected they form a composite component due to the fact that the structure is made up of multiple components.   It is important to note that composite components can be made from standard components and other composite components. Eventually as various components and composite components become interconnected a structure begins to form in the shape of an application or in the case of Legos in the form of Lego structure. Software components can loosely be defined as small units of related implemented functionality that can communicate with other components or may have dependencies on other components. Based on the definitions provide above, it is my personal opinion that SOA works well with the concepts of component development. The SOA architectural style focuses on creating loosely coupled services. Each service much like a component offers related functionality that can be accessed by various requesting clients.  In addition services can be derived just like components in that services can be built on other services to form composite services. In summary, the concepts of component development can work within SOA based on the example above.

My questions are: 1.- Is linode good for magento ? 2.- is linode good for java+tomcat+jstl+mysql apps ? 3.- What are the most demanding resources to magento ? CPU ? RAM ? • Security permissions for remote shared folders

  I have two servers running Windows Server 2003, and I want copy files from one server (A), programmatically with a windows service running under the Local System account, to a shared folder on the other (B). I keep getting "access denied" errors, and I can't figure out what security settings I need to set to open the shared folder for writing. This is what I've done on the recieving end: On A, right-click on the folder to share, choose the tab "Sharing" and select "Share this folder". Set a share name. Click "Permissions", add the group "Everyone" and give it full control. I tried choosing the "Security" tab to give some permissions there as well, but the "Add" dialog only finds local users, despite the fact that B shows up in the "Workgroup computers" dialog. After further inspection, this is the case also for the "Permissions" dialog under the "Sharing" tab (are they the same?).

I noticed that DiskStation Manager v2.3 provides various options including Amazon S3 and rsync: Does anybody have some real usage against cost statistics for Amazon's S3 service? How is sensitive data protected on Amazon S3? Are there any rsync online backup options? If so, what do people recommend? • User Profile cannot be loaded - Windows 7

  After uninstalling an HP Vector Mouse driver, then rebooting, when Windows tries to auto log me in, i get an error message saying tyhe following: The User Profile Service failed the Login. User Profile cannot be loaded. Due to the fact that it is the only account on this PC, I cannot even go into another account. I rebooted the machine several times, before going into Safe Mode with Networking. For some reason, I cannot create a new account whilst in safe mode (I think it is to do with UAC, nothing with UAC is clickable). Thus, I am stuck. I cannot get into my account, nor can I create a new one to copy files over to. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ryan EDIT: System Restore was, for some reason turned off. Thus, I cannot restore to a working point.

The notable addition in the curriculum, is substantial material on cloud and big data features that pertain to data and business intelligence. There are entire module/chapters that are dedicated Power BI, SQL Azure and HDInsight. Certifications and courses from Microsoft can get stick – sometimes fair and sometimes unfairly. Whilst I am a massive advocate of community to get information and education. Microsoft’s new courses will bring clarity to the burning topics of the moment and help you to understand the capabilities of Power BI and HDInsight.   Surely the next radical step in the development of User-interface design is for applications to react appropriately to the rising tide of bewilderment, frustration or antipathy of the users. When an application understands that rapport is lost, it should respond accordingly. When we, for example, become confused by an unforgiving interface, shouldn't there be a way of signalling our bewilderment and having the application respond appropriately? There is surprisingly little in the current interface standards that would help. If we're getting frustrated with an unresponsive application, perhaps we could let it know of our increasing irritation by means of an "I'm getting angry and exasperated" slider. Although, by 'responding appropriately', I don't include playing a "we are experiencing unusually heavy traffic: your application usage is important to us" message, accompanied by calming muzak. When confronted with a tide of wizards, 'are you sure?' messages, or page-after-page of tiresome and barely-relevant options, how one yearns for a handy 'JFDI' (Just Flaming Do It) button. One click and the application miraculously desists with its annoying questions and just gets on with the job, using the defaults, or whatever we selected last time. Much more satisfying, and more direct to most developers and DBAs, however, would be the facility to communicate to the application via a twitter-style input field, or via parameters to command-line applications ("I don't want a wide-ranging debate with you; just open the bl**dy PDF!" or, or "Don't forget which of us has the close button"). Although to avoid too much cultural-dependence, perhaps we should take the lead from emoticons, and use a set of standardized emoti-phrases such as 'sez you', 'huh?', 'Pshaw!', or 'meh', which could be used to vent a range of feelings in any given application, whether it be SQL Server stubbornly refusing to give us the result we are expecting, or when an online-survey is getting too personal. Or a 'Lingua Glaswegia' perhaps: 'Atsabelter' ("very good") 'Atspish' ("must try harder") 'AnThenYerArsFellAff ' ("I don't quite trust these results") 'BileYerHeid' or 'ShutYerGub' ("please stop these inane questions") There would, of course, have to be an ANSI standards body to define the phrases that were acceptable. Presumably, there would be a tussle amongst the different international standards organizations. Meanwhile Oracle, Microsoft and Apple would each release non-standard extensions.   My friend just updated her Windows Vista to service pack 1, or tried to. Now it wont boot up. Just black screen, some errors etc. I tried googling it and lots of people had this problem it seems. Anyone find a fix for it? I read somewhere I believe that Microsoft said to delete some files, Nvidia maybe? But I can not find that again, I forgot the exact error code I searched for before. Does anyone know what I am talking about? LOL Thanks guys.

• Using Ubuntu Karmic as an L2TP Client for VPN

  I'm trying to connect to a VPN service over L2TP using Karmic as a client and it's not working. The only details I have are the remote IP address, username & password, and a shared secret string; this is enough for Windows but doesn't appear to be enough for Ubuntu. I've tried using network-manager-vpnc and vpnc from the terminal to connect and I get "no supported authentication", and trying with OpenSwan it says "unable to identify either side of the connection". I'd really appreciate some help here if anyone else has implemented this successfully.

• Active Directory using Samba/Open LDAP for user accounts

  I know this is the wrong way round... but Is it possible to use AD in front of Samba for our PC clients, so that the user accounts are in Samba/Open LDAP. Managing our fleet of Windows PC's is becoming more and more difficult with just Samba v3 - until Samba v4 comes along, it would be great if we could leverage Active Directory, but have the accounts stored in Samba/Open LDAP. Windows PC's are a minority in our organisation & Samaba/Open LDAP are used for just about every service (Zimbra/RADIUS/Intranet/SAN/Printing/...) so it will have to remain the definitive account source. Anyway, it probably can't be done, but I thought I would ask for ideas anyway.

• Problem with IIS 6.0 in WOW WCF 4 (.net 4.0)

  We just upgraded to WCF 4 on IIS 6 (running in WoW 32 bit mode), and all of a sudden the services started running into what appears to be concurrency problems. Upon finding out we had a problem, we changed the Behavior Configuration Changes on the WCF server to the follow: <serviceThrottling maxConcurrentCalls="1000" maxConcurrentInstances="1000" maxConcurrentSessions="1000" /> We also changed the number of worker processes from 1 to 5. Doing all of this seemed to have no effect. The service seemed to be running, but throttled by something. Is there anything else that might need to be changed to remove the "artificial" throttling? Were using the default configuration WCF which should be Per-Call (not singleton).

  The error message “saslauthd internal error” seems like a catch-all for saslauthd, so I’m not sure if it’s a red herring, but here’s the brief description of my problem: This Kerberos command works fine: $ echo getprivs | kadmin -p username -w password Authenticating as principal username with password. kadmin: getprivs current privileges: GET ADD MODIFY DELETE But this SASL test command fails: $ testsaslauthd -u username -p password 0: NO "authentication failed" saslauthd works fine with "-a sasldb", but the above is with "-a kerberos5" This is the most detail I seem to be able to get from saslauthd: saslauthd[]: auth_krb5: krb5_get_init_creds_password: -1765328353 saslauthd[]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=username] [service=imap] [realm=] [mech=kerberos5] [reason=saslauthd internal error] Kerberos seems happy: krb5kdc[](info): AS_REQ (4 etypes {18 17 16 23}) 127.0.0.1: ISSUE: authtime 1298779891, etypes {rep=18 tkt=18 ses=18}, username at REALM for krbtgt/DOMAIN at REALM I’m running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) with the latest updates, namely: Kerberos 5 release 1.8.1 saslauthd 2.1.23 Thanks for any clues.

• Hyper-V server 2012 nic teaming setup and virtual switch configuration

  I have a server with 2 nics. I installed Hyper-v 2012 server (not windows server 2012, no gui) I am trying to set up load balancing. I have both nics in the same switch currently in trunk mode and no native vlan. I use the new-netlbfoteam command to create a team with both nics, I can then "set-netlbfoteamnic "Nic Team" -vlanid 4" so that its available to me with a DHCP or static address but as soon as I try to create a virtual switch it becomes unresponsive. My guess is that is due to it removing the vlan tagging I setup. if I add-netlbfoteamnic and set it for vlan 4, then set the IP I can ping it from my management computer but I just get an error "an error occurred while attempting to connect to server "xxxxxx" Check that the Virtual Machine Management service is running and that you are authorized to connect to the server."

  i've read about CDN but dont know exactly what it is for. lets say i've got an international social network (text and image content), and it's growing in traffic from different countries, do i have use of CDN? the picture i got from the sources i've read is that it copy your content and put it in many servers spread out over the world so that users will fetch it from the nearest point. does this mean that every server has a copy of my mysql database and the image files? is this the proper way to make your web service available for the world? cause how else could you set up a servers through out the world, contacting hosting companies for each country?

• How to Code Faster (Without Sacrificing Quality)

  I've been a professional coder for a several years. The comments about my code have generally been the same: writes great code, well-tested, but could be faster. So how do I become a faster coder, without sacrificing quality? For the sake of this question, I'm going to limit the scope to C#, since that's primarily what I code (for fun) -- or Java, which is similar enough in many ways that matter. Things that I'm already doing: Write the minimal solution that will get the job done Write a slew of automated tests (prevents regressions) Write (and use) reusable libraries for all kinds of things Use well-known technologies where they work well (eg. Hibernate) Use design patterns where they fit into place (eg. Singleton) These are all great, but I don't feel like my speed is increasing over time. I do care, because if I can do something to increase my productivity (even by 10%), that's 10% faster than my competitors. (Not that I have any.) Besides which, I've consistently gotten this feeback from my managers -- whether it was small-scale Flash development or enterprise Java/C++ development. Edit: There seem to be a lot of questions about what I mean by fast, and how I know I'm slow. Let me clarify with some more details. I worked in small and medium-sized teams (5-50 people) in various companies over various projects and various technologies (Flash, ASP.NET, Java, C++). The observation of my managers (which they told me directly) is that I'm "slow." Part of this is because a significant number of my peers sacrificed quality for speed; they wrote code that was buggy, hard to read, hard to maintain, and difficult to write automated tests for. My code generally is well-documented, readable, and testable. At Oracle, I would consistently solve bugs slower than other team-members. I know this, because I would get comments to that effect; this means that other (yes, more senior and experienced) developers could do my work in less time than it took me, at nearly the same quality (readability, maintainability, and testability). Why? What am I missing? How can I get better at this? My end goal is simple: if I can make product X in 40 hours today, and I can improve myself somehow so that I can create the same product at 20, 30, or even 38 hours tomorrow, that's what I want to know -- how do I get there? What process can I use to continually improve? I had thought it was about reusing code, but that's not enough, it seems.
