  • SQL vs. Oracle Live Debate (AKA Smackdown!)

    A few years ago I was speaking at a conference in Raleigh, NC where Ted Neward and I found a fun way to promote a Java vs. .NET debate that was planned one evening. We stood in the middle of a crowd during one of the breaks and starting “arguing” about Java vs. .NET with one another. Our voice levels quickly raised and we ended it by slapping each other across the face with a glove to request a challenge.   • Is it a good approach to rely on 3rd party software ( not library )?

    We have program using a call to a winzip program or 7zip commandline tool to zip some files. Once I accidentally uninstall winzip on my computer and making one of our program( created by the programmer already left ) crashed. So we cannot uninstall the winzip program. Now I've come to a point which I need to decide a external tool for gzip in windows or I make a java program which I can call to gzip the file. Obviously a external tool such as 7z is convenient and we can avoid some extra coding with java. On the contrary, if 7z is uninstalled accidentally, our program will crash. What do you think?

  • Consultant in a firm that doesn't understand the tech!

    I got the job as a Consultant in a firm that has 3 other programmers. My job is to rewrite all the old system in Java, Spring etc but the staff programmers only know perl and the manager does not know any programming. I am trying to get them to understand that I have 6 projects to rewrite here but no one has design docs or spec. the staff programmers never had to write any documents. Plus I cant get the manager to understand the new java tech stuff.. he keeps asking some of the staff for views on things but the staff don't know it or understand it. Where do I go from here to make the manager understand that the staff programmers or someone has to write a design document so I know what to build. or if I have to write the documents how do I get the information?

  • How to choose a language, when taking in account the community it includes?

    I was reading the following article: Great Hackers The following part grabbed my attention: "When you choose a language, you're also choosing a community. The programmers you'll be able to hire to work on a Java project won't be as smart as the ones you could get to work on a project written in Python. And the quality of your hackers probably matters more than the language you choose. Though, frankly, the fact that good hackers prefer Python to Java should tell you something about the relative merits of those languages." I would like to apply his advice on a commercial web application I am building (I am a strong believer in culture and community), yet this article was written in 2004, and python has increased in popularity in the recent years. How can I decided a language when taking in consideration its community, rather than the popularity? Any recommendations? Is there any language community that show dedication and passion for developing, rather than learning a language to get a Job and a paycheck?

  • Why does everyone dislike PHP? [closed]

    I'm primarily a Java/Python programmer, but I just picked up an entry-level job doing web development. I had to learn PHP, and several of my CS friends told me that it would stunt my coding ability/be terrible to program in/murder me in the middle of the night. So far, there have been annoying moments with the language (one particular thing that bugs me is the syntax for calling functions...), but nothing living up to the statements of my friends. I still haven't learned very much about the language. Is their hate justified? Why or why not? A few quotes I've seen about PHP: Haskell is faster than C++, more concise than Perl, more regular than Python, more flexible than Ruby, more typeful than C#, more robust than Java, and has absolutely nothing in common with PHP.   • HTTP(S) based file server

    I've got a server running Ubuntu 10.04. I've already gotten openssh for ssh and sftp on it. I've been looking for a web-based (http, or preferably https) file server, perhaps a web-front-end to an (S)FTP server, that allows access to a specific folder, and also allows uploads. It requires user authentication, preferably using PAM. This web-based solution is for users that are not allowed to use FTP software / browser extension and don't have flash / java browser plugins within their corporate environments. So far I have looked into: Webmin: Includes a file manager, however it uses Java, and I'm looking for a plugin-free implementation. Apache2: I was able to set up https and PAM authentication, but the barebone implementation doesn't include file upload (as far as I'm aware of). HFS: Haven't tried it out because it is for Windows/wine only, and I don't want to run it under wine.

  • Programming jobs for a science based degree [on hold]

    I am currently in my last year of a Masters in Physics at Uni and I am looking to go into a job that is mainly programming based. As part of my course we have learnt C++, Matlab and as a hobby I taught myself HTML, CSS, JAVA and a bit of JavaScript. After getting to this stage in my degree I've realised that its actually the programming side of Physics that I enjoy most. I've been working on a few Android apps & websites in my spare time but only things that utilize what I know in JAVA, HTML etc. Using Physics in programming is good fun but I don't want to limit myself just to Physics based jobs. I just want to know a few things: What kind of jobs can I apply for that would require the kind of skills I already posses/can work towards possessing in a year Can I compete with graduates who have had a lot more programming in their course for example Computer Science? Are there any specific extra things I need on my CV before I start applying for these jobs?

  • What library should I use for 2D Geometry? [closed]

    I've been working on a 2D game in java, but found that java just didn't cut it for me and had forced me to a lot of bad design choices, so I've decided to port all my work to c++. The main reason I've decided change to c++ is that i had reached a point where i had 3 geometry libraries (the native, one from the game engine and one to handle "complex" polygons), none of witch worked very well together and i couldn't keep track of them. I'm new to c++, but i know all the basics. My question is, what would be a good geometry library to use, ideally it should be able to handle integer and decimal data types, have point, line, and polygon classes witch are able to check for intersection and contains.   • Automatic language transformation in editor or IDE [on hold]

    Are there any tools that are capable of editing code but in different language? To be more concrete, I want to parse java source file in editor, compile it to my language X, edit in X and compile back to java on save. Or edit pom.xml file using non-XML syntax. Which editor or IDE would be easiest to use for implementing such prototype? Option to transform only a snippet would be ideal to limit effort on parsing. For one example, Intellij IDEA can display anonymous class so it looks like lambda expression hiding some of boilerplate.

  • Is it relevant to warn about truncating real constants to 32 bits?

    I'm toying around with LLVM and looking at what it would take to make yet another strongly-typed language, and now that I'm around the syntax, I've noticed that it seems to be a pet peeve of strongly typed language to warn people that their constants won't fit inside a float: // both in Java and C# float foo = 3.2; // error: implicitly truncating a double into a float // or something along these lines Why doesn't this work in Java and C#? I know it's easy to add the f after the 3.2, but is it really doing anything useful? Must I really be that aware that I'm using single-precision reals instead of double-precision reals? Maybe I'm just missing something (which, basically, is why I'm asking). Note that float foo = [const] is not the same thing as float foo = [double variable], where requiring the cast seems normal to me.
