• What should I do from here?

  Hi all, First of all, the site rocks. You can ask and get specific answers, mainly, for programming issues. This question is more generic. I studied Physics for my bachelors and Digital Image Processing for my masters, ended on September 2001. From then on I started working as a developer and software analyst. I worked, and working, witn C, C++, AIX OS, XP OS, MFC 4.21. I also did some data translations from EDIFACT to XML and viceversa. I trained users for the applications that I was running, I created documents (detailed design docs mainly), though most of the time I wrote, and I still write, code. Recently I applied for the best greek, graduate university for my MBA and they accepted me, starting on Jan 2011. I am a developer with no specific insight with the languages I work. I can be very productive with some subsets of the languages that the companies I worked for use, though this is a limited thing for a developer. If I get my MBA I can be a semi-businees analyst ot consultant, as I am now a semi-developer. The problem is that I can do some but not all in a designated working area. What should I do from here? Should I get my MBA and look forswitching industries? Should I read and excersise myself with new languages and frameworks? Should I be more focussed to the deligations from my current job (currently I work with MFC)? Just for the note, I am 32 and I feel I am wasting my time. I am not getting the best that I can get from is current position (and I work here for 3+ years). Thanks all, Sun

• Why does this code sample produce a memory leak?

  In the university we were given the following code sample and we were being told, that there is a memory leak when running this code. The sample should demonstrate that this is a situation where the garbage collector can't work. As far as my object oriented programming goes, the only codeline able to create a memory leak would be items=Arrays.copyOf(items,2 * size+1); The documentation says, that the elements are copied. Does that mean the reference is copied (and therefore another entry on the heap is created) or the object itself is being copied? As far as I know, Object and therefore Object[] are implemented as a reference type. So assigning a new value to 'items' would allow the garbage collector to find that the old 'item' is no longer referenced and can therefore be collected. In my eyes, this the codesample does not produce a memory leak. • so i got an econ degree...computing science or software systems (software engineering) degree ?

  okay so here's the story. i want to work in developing software (not QA or writing tests), so although I am currently starting computing science this summer, i came across Software Systems (aka s.e.) program which is "applied" but under computing science.... so what is the difference between the 2 disciplines ? if i choose software engineering, would it require more in depth expertise with calculus (i fail at it), and more coding time ? i am looking for a way to write better and more efficient code. I want to go to school, so i wont get lazy. i want to pick a program that would directly aid me in writing and developing software. graduating with an Econ degree in last year doesn't really help in landing jobs requiring comp sci/software engineering degrees....i should've studied harder in Economics (and maybe land a job) but i was obsessed with learning how to program with various languages since day 1 at University, but i didn't think i was smart enough to pass comp sci courses (so i just relied on books + irc...) and my parents said software jobs are being outsourced to India so i thought this obsession was just a "phase" and i should keep it as a hobby. but yes, it's quite funny why i hadn't pursued this field much earlier. as Joelonsoftware.com says economics degree starts with a bang (microeconomics the only course you only need really)....predicting stock prices (ridiculous!) + realizing China's potential power to meltdown US economy and vice versa + interest rate is inversely related to bond premium which is inversely related to stock market it would absolutely awesome if there was a program that combined finance + programming.

• Positioning Photos in a Grid (HTML)

  Hey Everyone, I've been trying to code this page for a while, but my biggest problem is that I can't seem to get the photos perfectly positioned. For some reason, there is a small bottom padding in each <td>which is messing things up. • How to define 2-bit numbers in C, if possible?

  For my university process I'm simulating a process called random sequential adsorption. One of the things I have to do involves randomly depositing squares (which cannot overlap) onto a lattice until there is no more room left, repeating the process several times in order to find the average 'jamming' coverage %. Basically I'm performing operations on a large array of integers, of which 3 possible values exist: 0, 1 and 2. The sites marked with '0' are empty, the sites marked with '1' are full. Initially the array is defined like this: int i, j; int n = 1000000000; int array[n][n]; for(j = 0; j < n; j++) { for(i = 0; i < n; i++) { array[i][j] = 0; } } Say I want to deposit 5*5 squares randomly on the array (that cannot overlap), so that the squares are represented by '1's. This would be done by choosing the x and y coordinates randomly and then creating a 5*5 square of '1's with the topleft point of the square starting at that point. I would then mark sites near the square as '2's. These represent the sites that are unavailable since depositing a square at those sites would cause it to overlap an existing square. This process would continue until there is no more room left to deposit squares on the array (basically, no more '0's left on the array) Anyway, to the point. I would like to make this process as efficient as possible, by using bitwise operations. This would be easy if I didn't have to mark sites near the squares. I was wondering whether creating a 2-bit number would be possible, so that I can account for the sites marked with '2'. Sorry if this sounds really complicated, I just wanted to explain why I want to do this.

• Best (Java) book for understanding 'under the bonnet' for programming?

  What would you say is the best book to buy to understand exactly how programming works under the hood in order to increase performance? I've coded in assembly at university, I studied computer architecture and I obviously did high level programming, but what I really dont understand is things like: -what is happening when I perform a cast -whats the difference in performance if I declare something global as opposed to local? -How does the memory layout for an ArrayList compare with a Vector or LinkedList? -Whats the overhead with pointers? -Are locks more efficient than using synchronized? -Would creating my own array using int[] be faster than using ArrayList -Advantages/disadvantages of declaring a variable volatile I have got a copy of Java Performance Tuning but it doesnt go down very low and it contains rather obvious things like suggesting a hashmap instead of using an ArrayList as you can map the keys to memory addresses etc. I want something a bit more Computer Sciencey, linking the programming language to what happens with the assembler/hardware. The reason im asking is that I have an interview coming up for a job in High Frequency Trading and everything has to be as efficient as possible, yet I cant remember every single possible efficiency saving so i'd just like to learn the fundamentals. • Integrate QT and OpenCV in Visual Studio

  Sorry If you feel that this is an already asked question. But I googled for more than 2 days any tried lots of solution which given through stackoverflow and referred lots of tutorials. But I couldn't get a proper idea. I am already working in a project which use c++(visual studio) with opencv which I am developing as my university project. I have developing this for last 2 months. But now I want to add a better UI.(Previously I considered only on the functionality) So I decided to move into QT. I'm new to QT. So I did some google search. I know that I can do this with the QT creator. But I want to do this in visual studio as the functionality of my project is bit complex. What I already know is I have to build opencv with Qt using cmake. I followed few tutorials. But most of the tutorials use mingw and QT creator. http://www.anlak.com/build-debug-opencv-vs2010/ Accoring to above tutorial I generated a visual studio project using cmake. But when I tried to open that solution file my visual studio becomes not-responding. I can't figure out the reason. I tried two days and I couldn't find a proper tutorial which describes integration of QT and opencv in visual studio. So can someone give me the instruction to integrate QT and Opencv in visual studio.

• How to remove empty tables from a MySQL backup file.

  I have multiple large MySQL backup files all from different DBs and having different schemas. I want to load the backups into our EDW but I don't want to load the empty tables. Right now I'm cutting out the empty tables using AWK on the backup files, but I'm wondering if there's a better way to do this. • Is there anything inherently wrong with long variable/method names in Java?

  I know this is probably is a question of personal opinion, but I want to know what's standard practice and what would be frowned upon. One of my profs in university always seems to make his variable and method names as short as possible (getAmt() instead of getAmount) for instance. I have no objection to this, but personally, I prefer to have mine a little longer if it adds descriptiveness so the person reading it won't have to check or refer to documentation. For instance, we made a method that given a list of players, returns the player who scored the most goals. I made the method getPlayerWithMostGoals(), is this wrong? I toiled over choosing a way to make it shorter for awhile, but then I thought "why?". It gets the point across clearly and Eclipse makes it easy to autocomplete it when I type. I'm just wondering if the short variable names are a piece of the past due to needing everything to be as small as possible to be efficient. Is this still a requirement?

• REST Rails 2 nested routes without resource names?

  I'm using Rails 2. I have resources nested like this: - university_categories - universities - studies - professors - comments I wish to use RESTful routes, but I don't want all that clutter in my URL. For example instead of: /universities/:university_id/studies/:study_id/professors/:professor_id I want: /professors/:university_id/:study_id/:professor_id (I don't map professors seperately so there shouldn't be a confusion between this and /professors/:professor_id since that route shouldn't exist). Again, I want to use RESTful resources/routes... Also note, I am using slugs instead of IDs. Slugs for studies are NOT unique, while other are. Also, there are no many-to-many relationships (so if I know the slug of a professor, which is unique, I also know which study and university and category it belongs to, however I still wish this information to be in the URI if possible for SEO, and also it is necessary when adding a new professor). I do however want to use shallow nesting for "administrator" URIs like edit, destroy (note the problem here with Study since it's slug is not unique, though)... I would also like some tips on how to use the url helpers so that I don't have too much to fix if I change the routes in the future... Thank you.

• How to translate the fields of a database model?

  I have some tables/models in a web app that will have multilingual content. For example a university, with it's description in a default language(english) and the user wants he can see the same information in another language( if the object has it's fields translated). If there were only a few languages then I would just add fields like name_en and name_de and so on, but the number of languages isn't fixed, so that' would create a mess. I could also just create a new object with the translated data but then foreign keys wouldn't work, and only some of the fields can be translated so that would create duplicate data. Storing the translations in a file and using gettext or something similar is also not an option since the objects fields can be translated by the website user, not only developers/admins. What would be the best way to design/architect such a database? Searching from the translated data should also be not too complex - as it should not require creating complex joins which would make the queries slower I'm using PostgreSQL and Ruby of Rails but I'm not looking for a technical solution but for a general idea how to design it.

• Compiling my Boost/NTL program with c++ on Linux.

  Hi SO, I wrote a client program and a server program, that uses the NTL library and Boost::Asio, to do client/server communication for an integer factorization application, in C++. Both sides consist of several headers and cpp files. Both project compile fine individually on Windows in Visual Studio. All I did, was add the include path of NTL and Boost to both projects: Additional include paths: "D:\Downloads\WinNTL-5_5_2\include";D:\boost_1_42_0 Furthermore, for both projects, I added the two library paths to both projects in VS: Additional library directories: D:\boost_1_42_0\stage\lib;"D:\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects\ntl\Debug" And added under Additional dependencies: ntl.lib As said, it compiles fine on Windows. But when I put the code on a Linux machine provided by university, I try to compile with the following statement c++ -I/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/include -I/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/boost_1_43_0/include client_protocol.cpp mpqs_client.cpp mpqs_sieve.cpp mpqs_helper.cpp -o mpqs_helper -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/NTL-5.4.2/lib -lntl -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/gmp-4.2.1/lib -lgmp -lm -L/appl/htopopt/Linux_x86_64/boost_1_43_0/lib -lboost_system -static Upon doing this, I get a huuuge error, which I posted here. Any idea how to fix this, please??

  Hi there, i'm trying to desing a new application which allow user see he/her current location on a custom map (office, university compus, etc). but actually i have a couple of question in my mind (i haven't designed this kind of application before). i'm wondering: How can i draw my own maps, what is the best option for it? there any format that i have to care of, there are any specification about it ? Once i have my custom map. how can i do to mapping a global position system with the local positions ? What are the tricks behing zoom on maps ? just differents layers with more or less informations and those layers changes on users demand ? If a whant to mark some specific points over the map, like a cafeteria, boss's office etc, how can i do that ? • How to make a plot from summaryRprof?

  This is a question for an university assignment. I was given three algorithms to calculate the GCD that I already did. My problem is getting the Rprof results to a plot so I can compare them side by side.   Hello guys, i guess that many of us has acceptable years of experience in PHP programming, me myself got 5 years programming in PHP since in University (not very solid), i just want to gather some suggestion here, what is better approach in PHP OOP? Since there is a lot of PHP framework out there as well as javascript framework, can anyone share their experience in using one of them as well as using both of the PHP and javascript framework together especially for developing enterprise system? (my company want to start using framework, ISP company) if someone has his/her own framework or class or php file so on and so forth, mind to share? now I've only database connection class. I've never use any php framework before, just jquery as javascript framework, my company has a messed up of programming approach because they did not actually a software house, so all the files are scattered across the server, I see that there are some question before about the framework but i just want to know you all approaches on OOP and in developing massive web apps using PHP, or maybe someone kind enough to share their solid written class. • Passing.getText() String to another class

  I'm currently working on a first year university project and I have a problem, although I doubt it's a very complicated one, but I've been searching and I just can't find a suitable answer to it. The problem concerns two classes. A gui class (class1) and another class (class2). I have a JTextField in class1 and am trying to pass through the .getText() value to class2 and store it in a String type variable. The current code I'm trying to achieve this with is the following: (Class1) private JTextField textField = new JTextField("Something"); ... public String getTextFieldString() { return textField.getText(); } (Class2) private c1 Class1 = new Class1(); private String s = new String(); ... s = c1.getTextFieldString(); I'm pretty new to coding, I've read that maybe I need to pass through an argument somewhere and I assume that's because textField is not static in itself, it changes when somebody enters a new value. • Is there an efficient algorithm to distribute resources in a way that both avoids conflict and allows bias?

  Background (Skip this if you only care about the algorithm) At the university where I work, one of the biggest hassles in our department is classroom scheduling. For illustration purposes and to lay out the scope of the problem, here's how we do scheduling now: Professors give us a list of the classes they're teaching with the time slots they'd prefer to teach, ranked in order of priority (most desired to least desired). Administration gives us a list of the rooms we may assign along with the times those rooms are available for our department's use. We start assigning professors to rooms trying (at first) to take into account the preferences of the various professors. Inevitably, conflicts arise, professors start asking for changes, and the plan falls to pieces somewhere around professor number 30, at which point we start assigning rooms basically wherever we can fit them in, crumpled pieces of paper are everywhere, and nobody's happy. (If you've ever wondered why your class was at 9.30 in the morning on Thursday but 4 pm every other day, now you know) I have been asked to quietly investigate whether software could do this more optimally. The Actual Question Is there an algorithm to efficiently schedule a set of resources such that the following criteria are met: The algorithm must never assign two professors to the same room at the same time. The task is not complete until every professor has been assigned a room / time. The algorithm need not worry about having too many professors for the amount of time slots available. (We're not that well funded.) As much as is possible the algorithm should respect the scheduling preferences of the individual professors. I feel like I can't be the first one to ask this. Is there a efficient algorithm for this, or is this the sort of problem that can only be brute-forced?

• Why do you program? Why do you do what you do? [closed]

  To me, writing a new program is like a puzzle. Before you write any code for a large system, you have to carefully craft each piece in your mind and imagine how all the pieces will fit together. If you don't, your solution may end up being undefined. What I mean is, I often don't know what I'm doing so I'll come to this site and beg for a code snippet, and then somehow try to hack it into my projects. I started writing GW-Basic when I was around 8 years old. Then it progressed from there, went to california university and did some Python and C++, but really didn't learn anything(college = highsk00l++). I've mostly been self-taught, took awhile to break bad habits and I'd say only in recent years would I consider myself understanding of design patterns and all that stuff (no but honestly procedural dudes, I would not want to design and maintain a large system procedurally, yous crazy). And despite my username, money has NOT been a big motivator. I've gone from job to job, I can usually get the work done perfect very quickly, any delays on my part are understandable (well about as understandable as it gets in the industry). But I ain't gonna work for peanuts because I got mouths to feed. Why do you program? Why do you do what you do?

• Looking for a good C++/.net book

  I have recently started to feel that I need to greatly improve my C++ skills especially in the realm of .net. I graduated from a good four year university with a degree in computer science about 9 months ago and I have since been doing full time contract work for a small software company in my local area. Most of my work has been done using Java/lisp/cocoa/XML and before that most of my programming in my senior year was in java/C#. I did a decent amount of C++ in my Sophomore year and in my free time before that but I feel that my general knowledge of C++/.net is very lacking for the opportunities that are now coming my way. Can anyone recommend a good book that could help me get up too speed? I feel I do not need a very basic introduction to C++ but something that covers the fundamentals of .net would be good for me. So basically what I need is a book or books that would be good for a .net novice and a C++ developer who is just beyond novice. Also, a book that would help bein an interview by giving me a conversional understanding of C++ would be great. Thanks a lot!.

• Planning a programming project by example (C# or C++)

  I am in the last year of undergraduate degree and i am stumped by the lack of example in c++ and c# large project in my university. All the mini project and assignment are based on text based database, which is so inefficient, and console display and command, which is frustrating. I want to develop a complete prototype of corporate software which deals in Inventory, Sales, Marketing, etc. Everything you would usually find in SAP. I am grateful if any of you could direct me to a books or article or sample program. Some of the question are : How to plan for this kind of programming? should i use the concept of 1 object(such as inventory) have its own process and program and have an integrator sit for all the program, or should i integrate it in 1 big program? How to build and address a database? i have little bit knowledge in database and i know SQL but i never address database in a program before. Database are table, and how do you suppose to represent a table in a OOP way? For development type, which is better PHP and C++ or C# and ASP.NET? I am planning to use Web Interface to set form and information, but using a background program to handle the compute. .NET is very much integrated and coding should be much faster, but i really wonder about performance if compared to PHP and C++ package thank you for the info

• Looking for a book which teaches how to write applications (as opposed to writng code)

  I am not a developer. I have coded for fun and for university projects in several languages, and during an internship, I have written code which is still in use by a department of Fortune Global 500 company. I also have extensive theoretical knowledge of software engineering - process models, architecture, project management, UI construction using Lauesen's virtual windows... you get the picture. But I am not involved with software development in my job. I recently decided to start coding for fun again, and now I have some free days to do it. But this time, I want to do it right. I want to write a real, useful application, install it on my devices and use it myself. Also I want to publish it for others to use, should they want to do so. I am vaguely aware that there is more to writing an application than to writing code. There is stuff like version control software, decision for the right IDE, having a suite of unit tests, producing an installation package - and probably lots of other things I never thought of but which must be taken care of in a proper application, as opposed to a bunch of classes I am running from my IDE. All this is stuff I should know before I start, but I have not learned it. Coding books touch on some of the subjects like IDE choice, but don't go into detail, and are not exhaustive. Theoretical software engineering textbooks are even less helpful. So is there a book which teaches exactly that? I know that I can find information on each of these topics on the Internet, but I'd rather have a systematic book exhaustively listing all the things I should take care of if I want to create a good application, and offering the currently accepted solutions for them. In the best case, it will be language- and platform independent, but if you know of a good book focusing on a specific platform, I would like to know about it too. I know I want a lot, but given how important such knowledge is and how many people need it, surely somebody must have written such a book?

• Howto display or view encrypted data in encrypted form?

  In the Wikipedia Article on Block Cipher Modes they have a neat little diagram of an unencrypted image, the same image encrypted using ECB mode and another version of the same image encrypted using another method. At university I have developed my own implementation of DES (you can find it here) and we must demo our implementation in a presentation. I would like to display a similar example as shown above using our implementation. However most image files have header blocks associated with them, which when encrypting the file with our implementation, also get encrypted. So when you go to open them in an image viewer, they are assumed to be corrupted and can't be viewed. I was wondering if anybody new of a simple header-less image format which we could use to display these? Or if anyone had any idea's as to how the original creator of the images above achieved the above result? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks Note: I realise rolling your own cryptography library is stupid, and DES is considered broken, and ECB mode is very flawed for any useful cryptography, this was purely an academic exercise for school. So please, no lectures, I know the drill.

I am in a confusion. Can a single program having server socket and client socket will do or i have to create two programs of one initiating a system and another peer program running thrice to solve the problem. or i need to create three programs for three peer systems. I am not clear on the architecture of building peer to peer programs using java sockets. Can some one help me giving a simple program on how to create a peer to peer connection between three systems. I know how to do a socket program for client server model and clear on the concept. But creating a peer to peer architecture sounds complex for me to understand. I also referred this thread. developing peer to peer in java The person commented second says" To make peer2peer app each client opens server socket too. When client A wishes to connect to client B it just connects to its socket. " Need some more sample and an explanation on how peer to peer java socket program works I dont want any external api like jxta to do this task. I need a clear picture on how it works alone with an example.

• How can I be a Guru? Is it possible? [closed]

  Before 1999, I heard about computer. But, I don't know what it look like. TV? Maybe! Before 2001, I only saw it in book. It looks like a TV. Before 2005, I touched it in reality. It still looks like a TV + Black Box. In 2005, I entered university. I had a cource about Mathematica.I loved programming since then. In 2006, I owned a computer. I was coding C every day. if...else..., for..., while..., switch... entered my life. Since 2007, I have learned Data Structures, Algorithms...Then, C#, Java, Python, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, F#... A lot of languages. I'm still learning new lang. Unfortunately, I only know syntax! I'm always a novice(??)! I know some guru start programming at age of 8 or 12. I admire these gurus who are compiler writers, language designers, architecture designers, Linux hackers... Is it possible to become a guru like me. If possible, how? what should I do now? Any advice? Thank you very much.
