  First of all i'm new at ubuntu. I've only tried 11.10 before 12.04. Since then my notebook's(Dell Insprion 5110) fan was working non-stop. And also battery lasts in 2 hours. So i made a research. Some said it's about graphics card driver. I've tried so many things, so many codes but i get no result.   I have a problem with the new Ubuntu 12.10. • Problem with ubuntu 12.04

  It's first time when i use ubuntu.I downloaded and installed 12.04 version of ubuntu.It works fine but sometimes when i shut my pc down from ubuntu and i try to start it again,nothing shows on the screen.It's always black and it shoud appear Acer logo(i have acer aspire 5573)It's like the sistem is restart again and again but it can't boot ubuntu(or windows,i use dualboot)The meniu(where i can choose between windows and ubuntu it's not displayed because the pc don't start correctly.When this happens i shut down the pc definitively and i remove the battery and i put it again.Then everything works fine.How do i repair it?I think that could be a incompatibility with the pc because with windows everything works fine.Help please and sorry for my horrible english...Thanks!

• Can't remove c:/ubuntu folder pleas help?

  hi today i downloaded ubuntu with wubi-installer on my windows 7 machine but after restarting pc and booting in ubuntu installer my pc shuts down while installing because my laptops battery was gone empty i forgot to plug in my adapter so ubunutu fails to install, then i booted in windows 7 to uninstall ubuntu from add/remove programs en reainstall but the uninstaller did not fully remove the files i still have i folder in my c:/ubuntu when i double click on that folder my explorer.exe stops responding and than i need to open the task manager to kill the explorer.exe procces and restart it and right clicking does the same thing i cant do anyting with c:/ubuntu folder to reinstall ubuntu with wubi i have used unlocker1.9 to remove the folder but i get an error saying Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error HUH ! please help please :( EDIT: Okay i fixed my problem after following this instruction ! i don't understand why you people did not ask me to do this but it's okay i forgive you my poeple LoL !

• Nexus S 4g not detected by computer

  A little bit of a disclaimer, I have very little knowledge of the correct terminology for some of the things I'm going to ask about, and I apologize in advance I have a Nexus S 4g phone that is, at the moment of writing, connected to my 11.10 computer through its USB charger cable. In the past, connecting the phone like this has allowed me to transfer files between my computer and my phone; I'm able to get my music onto my phone, and my photos onto my computer, for example. For some reason, this has stopped working. My phone still charges its battery when connected to the computer, but neither the computer nor the phone recognized that they are connected. Is there something I can do to get the phone and the computer to detect each other? I don't know how to fix this, and it's more than a little frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Ubuntu 12.04 x64 doesn't boot anymore after a power failure

  I'm a Windows user and I have no experience with Linux and Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my netbook (Asus 1215B) and everything works fine. Yesterday I ran the "update application" and updated over 120 "things" (I have no idea what exactly). After that I was asked to reboot, and I did. Ubuntu starts again and at the load screen with these 5 dots that normally begin to change color, it freezes. After 20 minutes I took out the battery to try another reboot (yes, not the the best idea), and now nothing happens. I boot from the HDD and I get an Error BOOTMGR is missing. I have important data on the hard drive. Is there an option to get this fixed? Or if not, to at least get the data from the hard drive?

I am aware of virtual box/vmware for full virtualization but I am looking for something more lightweight (on my windows machine both come at a significant cost in battery life) closer to os virtualization level. Ideally, I would like something like windows 7/8 compatibility mode: the ability to run a program as if I were on 12.04. Does Ubuntu/Linux have such mechanism? What is the preferred way of running programs/scripts designed for an older version of Ubuntu?

• Shutdown after waking up

  This issue appeard after installing last week's updates from Update Manager. When waking up after suspend, the OS starts loading and it halts unexpectedly, before the load is complete. I don't get to see login screen. This worked well last week, before installing updates. Then I need to remove laptop's battery, wait a while, then plug it and start again (otherwise power button won't work). Is anybody else experiencing this behavior? I have an HP DV7 with an intel core i7.

• Manually re-enable wireless and bluetooth

  So, today, I decided to turn off bluetooth to save battery power. When I did so, it did everything like normal. Whatever. But whenever I want to re-enable Wifi and Bluetooth, it just has "Enable Wireless" and "Enable bluetooth" grayed out in the respective things on the top-right of the desktop. I am using 12.04 Precise Pangolin on a Dell laptop that has never had wireless problems before. Clicking the grayed-out part does nothing. Re-logging and restarting has no effect, and I'm on an account that has full administrative permission. My attempts: ~$ sudo dmesg | grep wlan0 [19.960211] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready . ~$ sudo dmesg | grep blue [[nothing]] What do I do to manually re-enable wireless and bluetooth?

• System crashed while upgrading, now unable to recover. Please help

  Yesterday while upgrading from 11.4 to 11.10, due to power cut my system crashed. Ubuntu is unable to boot. While booting I get two options in grub, one is for recovery mode and the other is for normal ubuntu booting (and others are also thr for mem check and booting to windows). When I try to boot it normally, it pauses booting while displaying ' Checking battery statues' . Though i am not using a laptop, I am on a desktop. And In recovery mode the menu has 4 options - resume boot, fsck , remount and root ( to goto shell prompt) . If I go to shell and type ' apt-get dist upgrade' , it shows - W: not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock E:unable to write to /var/cache/apt E:The package lists or status files could not be parsed or opened. Please instruct me to recover from this situation.

• Ubuntu not booting after upgrade to 12.04 from 11.10

  I upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 today. After the upgrade, I did the usual reboot of the system and then Ubuntu hangs on Checking battery state..[OK]. I can login to terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F5 and I did startx but it hangs after displaying white images of the desktop icons..there is no menu or any top bar at all. I guess this problem has something to do with Xserver, but I cannot find xorg.conf on my system. How can I get around this problem? Also is there a way I can make a backup of my files through the command line, because the GUI is not showing up at all?

• Wireless mouse temporarily freezes when resume from standby

  I have been getting a very annoying problem since recently in Ubuntu 12.04, probably due to another update that did more bad than good... When I resume from sleep on my Lenovo Thinkpad T420, my wireless laser mouse (Logitech M705) freezes at regular intervals (15.20 seconds) for 5 seconds then works again. This happens regardless if the computer is on battery or on AC power. How do I debug this?   I simply don't use bluetooth. Since it can be a security risk and also drains the battery I would like to keep it deactivated. I quickly found the option to turn it off in the settings menu, but the problem is: it doesn't stay dead! Everytime I pull my Nexus 4 out of standby mode bluetooth reappears in the top bar as if I never deactivated it. How can I deactivate it so it stays deactivated or better yet how can I remove it from my phone entirely? I tried sudo apt-get remove bluez bluetooth, but I am not allowed to edit this package.

Hence, their is a lot of concurrency. Each thread-process loop infinitely though two SQL queries. The first is for reading, the second is for writing. The read operation considers 500 time the amount of rows the write operation considers. • cPanel web servers mounting home partition to a NAS or SAN

  Hello, I currently have 2 cPanel web servers that are little 1RU dual cpu quad core xeons. They have a lot of resources for processing and handling web requests, and never exceed more than 10% cpu usage. They also have plenty of RAM. The problem is though that they both have RAID 1 160Gb SAS hard disk drives in them that are 75% full, and growing by the day. I didnt think that the amount of disk usage would be so high, but due to the nature of the sites hosted, this has become an issue. The easy fix would be just to upgrade the hard drives to something bigger (probably not of the SAS variety), but I am thinking of keeping the current machines as "processing servers" and buying a central "storage server" with about 12TB of storage. The /home/ partition on each of the 1RU servers would be mounted to a NAS or SAN point on this central storage server. My questions are: - Has anyone got a cPanel setup where they mount /home/ to a NAS or SAN elsewhere? If so, can you provide details as to what you did and how it went :) - Any recommendations on networking? Is gigabit ethernet enough? Is TCP/IP going to be a noticable performance problem? Anyone used a TOE key? - Anyone benchmarked or had any performance issues with SAN over NAS? Any help greatly appreciated. Scott

• Puppet: array in parameterized classes VS using resources

  I have some use cases where I want to define multiple similar resources that should end up in a single file (via a template). As an example I'm trying to write a puppet module that will let me manage the mapping between MAC addresses and network interface names (writing udev's persistent-net-rules file from puppet), but there are also many other similar usage cases. I searched around and found that it could be done with the new parameterised classes syntax: if implemented that way it should end up being used like this: node { "myserver.example.com": class { "network::iftab": interfaces => { "eth0" => { "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54" } "eth1" => { "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef" } } } } Not too bad, I agree, but it would rapidly explode when you manage more complex stuff (think network configurations like in this module or any other multiple-complex-resources-in-a-single-config-file stuff). In a similar question on SF someone suggested using Pienaar's puppet-concat module but I doubt it could get any better than parameterised classes. What would be really cool and clean in the configuration definition would be something like the included host type, it's usage is simple, pretty and clean and naturally maps to multiple resources that will end up being configured in a single place. Transposed to my example it would be like: node { "myserver.example.com": interface { "eth0": "mac" => "ab:cd:ef:98:76:54", "foo" => "bar", "asd" => "lol", "eth1": "mac" => "98:76:de:ad:be:ef", "foo" => "rab", "asd" => "olo", } } ...that looks much better to my eyes, even with 3x options to each resource. Should I really be passing arrays to parameterised classes, or there is a better way to do this kind of stuff? Is there some accepted consensus in the puppet [users|developers] community? By the way, I'm referring to the latest stable release of the 2.7 branch and I am not interested in compatibility with older versions.

• Computer randomly freezes when playing games

  My computer just randomly freezes when playing certain games. It has happened to me in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Call of Duty 4, and Blacklight: Retribution. It has not happened to me with other games like Tribes: Ascend yet, which leads me to believe it is a software-side issue related to maybe DirectX or PhysX? Also, temperatures seem stable. I used RivaTuner combined with MSI Afterburner, and at the time of freezing with BF:BC2, it gives: 62C, 67% GPU usage and 78.8FPS. During the session the max I have seen was 65C and 97% GPU usage. On Blacklight: Retribution, I've heard other people complain about the problem too. This is why it is such a mystery to me, is this actually a driver problem, or more a game problem? I've been able to play these games for long until I re-installed Windows 7 (because it was growing too full and slow). Before I had a 32bit Ultimate version, and now 64bit. If you’re trying to find a break-even utilization, you’re economically advantaged using Heavy Utilization RIs (vs. On-Demand Instances) if you plan to use your instance more than 43% of a 1-year term or 79% of a 3-year term. I'm assuming that, if I'm planning on running a 24/7 Web Server, then regardless of how many resources I consume (bandwidth, cpu cycles, memory), I would want to go with a Heavy Utilization Reserved Instance? This one Web Server in particular will likely barely budge the cpu, but it needs to be up and running 24/7. Not 100% on what they're defining as "heavy".
