• Best/Most Comprehensive API for Stocks/Financial Data

  What is the most recommended free/public API for accessing financial market stats and stock quotes (preferrably real-time quotes)? I'm not too picky about how it's exposed (SOAP, REST, some proprietary XML setup, etc.), as long as it's got some decent documentation. I'm planning to build a simple web dashboard in PHP with some basic data (basically a quick-n-dirty homepage), but may want to grow it into a full blown web app eventually. Any thoughts? • Page upload data again on page refresh in ASP.NET

  For some reason when the user click on the submit button and he re-fresh the page the same data get's uploaded again to my SQL Server 2005 database. I do not what this to happen........... • Standard Place for an Empty String Array in the JDK

  Hi is there a standard place for accessing empty array constants in the JDK 1.5. When I want to do a conversion from a String Collection (e.g. ArrayList)to a String Array I find myself using my own which is defined in my own Constants class: public static final String[] EMPTY_STRING_ARRAY = new String[0]; And then in my client code something like: String[] retVal = myStringList.toArray(Constants.EMPTY_STRING_ARRAY); return retVal; I was wondering if this is the "idiomatic" of doing it or if I'm missing something I get the impression from the brief search I did that this kind of thing is prevalent in many people's code. Any ideas, answers, comment (aside from that I shouldn't really use String Arrays) greatly appreciated, Cheers Simon

• Can Microsoft store three-valued fields in a single bit?

  I'm completely ignorant of SQL/databases, but I was chatting with a friend who does a lot of database work about how some databases use a "boolean" field that can take a value of NULL in addition to true and false. Regarding this, he made a comment along these lines: "To Microsoft's credit, they have never referred to that kind of field as a boolean, they just call it a bit. And it's a true bit - if you have eight or fewer bit fields in a record, it only requires one byte to store them all." Naturally that seems impossible to me - if the field can hold three values you're not going to fit eight of them into a byte. My friend agreed that it seemed odd, but begged ignorance of the low-level internals and said that so far as he knew, such fields can hold three values when viewed from the SQL side, and it does work out to require a byte of storage. I imagine one of us has a wire crossed. Can anyone explain what's really going on here?

• Error in unzipping a file from a python script running as daemon

  I am getting an error whenever i try to run following unzip command from a python script which is running as a daemon Command : unzip abcd.zip /dev/null Error End-of-central-directory signature not found$ a zip file, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of abcd.zip$ abcd.zip.zip, and cannot find abcd.zip.ZIP, period. • Operating system for visualization app in 6 monitors

  Hi. I have to plan the development for an application with these major requirements: Show different graphical data and animations in 6 monitors, in fullscreen mode. The hardware to be used is a PC with 3 NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 cards. I have some expertise working with OpenGL, but never with more than one monitor. I have the (some limited) freedom to choose an operating system for the application. My options are: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Ubuntu 8.04/10.04. I would like to know, if you have some expertise or knowledge in the multi-monitor application development field, what is the recommended operating system for this kind of application? And, do I need any software other than the operating system and the NVIDIA drivers to be able to use the 6 monitors in fullscreen, showing different things in each one of them?   Hi, My Grails app has a User class and a Role class. The User class has an authorities property which holds the roles assigned to that user, e.g. class User { static hasMany = [authorities: Role] // This method is called automatically after a user is inserted def afterInsert() { this.authorities.size() } } If I create a user and assign them a role, a NullPointerException is thrown from the GORM event method afterInsert(), because authorities is null. If I comment out afterInsert() the user is saved correctly along with the assigned role. Is there some reason why I can't access associations from GORM event methods. Is is possible that this event is fired after the User row is inserted, but before the row is added to the User-Role join table? Thanks, Don

• using a texture mesh and wireframe mesh in threejs

  I'm trying to draw a wireframe mesh and a textured mesh in threeJS but when I have both added to my scene the textured mesh doesn't display. Code below: I'm having trouble creating two meshes that share the same geometry where one of the materials is wireframe and the other is a texture. If one of the materials is wireframe and the other is just a color fill it works fine- but as soon as I make the second material a texture it stops working. • Using comet with PHP?

  I was thinking of implementing real time chat using a PHP backend, but I ran across this comment on a site discussing comet: My understanding is that PHP is a terrible language for Comet, because Comet requires you to keep a persistent connection open to each browser client. Using mod_php this means tying up an Apache child full-time for each client which doesn’t scale at all. The people I know doing Comet stuff are mostly using Twisted Python which is designed to handle hundreds or thousands of simultaneous connections. Is this true? Or is it something that can be configured around?

• Flash security popup is unclickable on a layered window

  I have a layered (TransparencyKey is set) winform w/ a WebBrowser control on it that navigates to a page that contains flash (swf). Everything works okay except that when flash shows a security popup, none of the buttons on the popup respond to mouse click, so I can't click Allow/Deny. Right-click works but only shows the context menu that is normal to flash. I tried overriding WndProc on the WebBrowser control, as suggested here, but it still does not respond to mouse click. If I comment out the TransparencyKey setting, even w/o the WndProc override, the buttons respond. I thought this'd be a container issue so I decided to host the swf file on the form, using the example here, but this, too, had the same problem w/ layered window. So, is there another way that can get around this problem? What is it w/ layered window that renders the buttons on the flash popup unclickable? What is it w/ flash...?

• fastest (low latency) method for Inter Process Communication between Java and C/C++

  Hello, I have a Java app, connecting through TCP socket to a "server" developed in C/C++. both app & server are running on the same machine, a Solaris box (but we're considering migrating to Linux eventually). type of data exchanged is simple messages (login, login ACK, then client asks for something, server replies). each message is around 300 bytes long. Currently we're using Sockets, and all is OK, however I'm looking for a faster way to exchange data (lower latency), using IPC methods. I've been researching the net and came up with references to the following technologies: - shared memory - pipes - queues but I couldn't find proper analysis of their respective performances, neither how to implement them in both JAVA and C/C++ (so that they can talk to each other), except maybe pipes that I could imagine how to do. can anyone comment about performances & feasibility of each method in this context ? any pointer / link to useful implementation information ? thanks for your help

• Using 'load' in octave

  Is there a way to tell the load function to only load until a certain line? I want to read in a data file and assign the numbers to an array, however, I want it to stop after it has created a 200 X 200. Could I also do this with a do-while loop and fgetl? When I try to use fgetl(fid, len) and give it 'len', it does not obey :-/ How can I tell octave to ignore the comment lines in an input file? They are '#' characters, so I figured octave would just automatically ignore them, but not so... Thanks.

• Django admin causes high load for one model...

  In my Django admin, when I try to view/edit objects from one particular model class the memory usage and CPU rockets up and I have to restart the server. I can view the list of objects fine, but the problem comes when I click on one of the objects. Other models are fine. Working with the object in code (i.e. creating and displaying) is ok, the problem only arises when I try to view an object with the admin interface. The class isn't even particularly exotic: class Comment(models.Model): user = models.ForeignKey(User) thing = models.ForeignKey(Thing) date = models.DateTimeField(auto_now_add=True) content = models.TextField(blank=True, null=True) approved = models.BooleanField(default=True) class Meta: ordering = ['-date'] Any ideas? I'm stumped. The only reason I could think of might be that the thing is quite a large object (a few kb), but as I understand it, it wouldn't get loaded until it was needed (correct?).

• MySQL - Skip Duplicate WordPress Entries

  I'm writing a script to display the 10 most recently "active" WordPress blog posts (i.e. those with the most recent comments). Problem is, the list has a lot of duplicates. I'd like to weed out the duplicates. Is there an easy way to do this by changing the MySQL query (like IGNORE, WHERE) or some other means? • OpenMP + SSE gives no speedup

  Hi, My Professor found out this interesting experiment of 3D Linearly separable Kernel Convolution using SSE and OpenMP, and gave the task to me to benchmark the statistics on our system. The author claims a crazy 18 fold speedup from the serial approach! Might not be always, but we were expecting at least a 2-4 times speedup running this on a Dual Core Intel. http://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/16bit-3d-convolution-sse4openmp-implementation-on-penryn-cpu/#comment-41994 Alas, we could find exactly no speedup. The serial code performs always better, with or without OpenMP. I am using Linux, and observed a certain trend...when no other processes are running on the system, after a while the loadavg starts increasing, and the the %CPU utilization falls down. Another probable false positive which I ran into accidentally...I started the program, then immediately paused it. Then I ran it on background with bg, and saw a speedup of more than 2. • Hide horizontal scrollbar in IE 7 and below

  Hi all. Basically, I'm having trouble removing the horizontal scrollbar in Internet Explorer 7 and Below. I've tried the code below and It seems to work fine in every browser except IE. overflow-x: hidden; The even bigger problem is that, even though the scrollbar isn't even removed, it seems to completely screw the layout.. It somehow hides the majority of the page content in boxes 2 and 3? It also.. adds a second vertical scrollbar which moves relatively/absolute positioned items down?! I did contemplate just leaving the scrollbar in IE via a specified stylesheet, but even that seems to be messing with the page? The website is on a test directory here.. • A tool to find and fix incomplete source code documentation

  I have several finished, older PHP projects with a lot of includes that I would like to document in javadoc/phpDocumentor style. While working through each file manually and being forced to do a code review alongside the documenting would be the best thing, I am, simply out of time constraints, interested in tools to help me automate the task as much as possible. The tool I am thinking about would ideally have the following features: Parse a PHP project tree and tell me where there are undocumented files, classes, and functions/methods (i.e. elements missing the appropriate docblock comment) Provide a method to half-way easily add the missing docblocks by creating the empty structures and, ideally, opening the file in an editor (internal or external I don't care) so I can put in the description. Optional: Automatic recognition of parameter types, return values and such. But that's not really required. The language in question is PHP, though I could imagine that a C/Java tool might be able to handle PHP files after some tweaking. Thanks for your great input!

  I work on legacy systems and I used to see revision history of files or functions being modified every release in the source code, for example: // // Rev. If yes, how do you apply modifications on the source code - do you comment it or delete it completely? If not, what's the best way to document these revisions? If you use version control systems, does it follow that your source files contain pure source codes, except for comments when necessary (no revision history for each function, etc.)?

• Visual studio: automatically update C++ cpp/header file when the other is changed?

  For example, if I change the signature in a function in either the header or the cpp, I'd like it to automatically change in the other one. If I add a new function in either, it should appear in both. If I delete a function, it could probably comment out the other one. Manually having to duplicate one's changes seems silly. Some people have mentioned http://www.lazycplusplus.com/ in response to a similar question, but it seems that that's a command line tool which would require saving and then running this external tool on a particular file. That's still more manual steps than I would have thought were necessary; I'd like this to apply changes as I type.

  I read this comment in the OpenID post on the stackoverflow blog. Kibbee says : One nice feature of OpenID that I use is the ability to delegate the openID verification. So I can set up my own domain name, and then put a tiny bit of XML on that page that tells the site (like stackoverflow) to go to some other openid Provider (in my case MyOpenID). The big plus is that I have complete control over my Open ID account. If MyOpenID goes down, I can just switch to another provider. I think anybody who has their own domain name should go for this option. What is this tiny bit of XML that will allow my server to act as an openid provider/forwarder?

• Try all available WSDL IPs with JAX-WS

  I'm using JAX-WS to open a service port. When the DNS exposes two IPs for the DNS entry (of the WSDL), the Service tries to use only the first - resulting in a "Failed to access the WSDL at: http://some.url.com/someDocument?wsdl. It failed with: Connection refused: connect" exception. I've found an issue filed against JAX-WS, but with no resolution. this is the comment that describes my problem best. The code is just a one-liner: Service service = Service.create("http://some.url.com/someDocument?wsdl", engineQName); the smarts is exposing those two A records on http://some.url.com/ at the DNS. • How can I add a default header to my source files automatically in Eclipse?

  Hi. I'm trying to figure out how I can have a comment header automatically added to all new source files in my eclipse java project. I've looked around but I haven't found a simple solution to automate this process. I gave JAutodoc a try, and even though it does allow me to specify a header I still had to tell the plugin manually to inject the header and it didn't seem very fond of my keyword-subsitution. I'm by the way using the Maven2 plugin for Eclipse for most of my projects if that's any help. Any tips?
