• Best (Java) book for understanding 'under the bonnet' for programming?

  What would you say is the best book to buy to understand exactly how programming works under the hood in order to increase performance? I've coded in assembly at university, I studied computer architecture and I obviously did high level programming, but what I really dont understand is things like: -what is happening when I perform a cast -whats the difference in performance if I declare something global as opposed to local? -How does the memory layout for an ArrayList compare with a Vector or LinkedList? -Whats the overhead with pointers? -Are locks more efficient than using synchronized? -Would creating my own array using int[] be faster than using ArrayList -Advantages/disadvantages of declaring a variable volatile I have got a copy of Java Performance Tuning but it doesnt go down very low and it contains rather obvious things like suggesting a hashmap instead of using an ArrayList as you can map the keys to memory addresses etc. I want something a bit more Computer Sciencey, linking the programming language to what happens with the assembler/hardware. The reason im asking is that I have an interview coming up for a job in High Frequency Trading and everything has to be as efficient as possible, yet I cant remember every single possible efficiency saving so i'd just like to learn the fundamentals. • Can this line of code really throw an IndexOutOfRange exception?

  I am getting an IndexOutOfRange exception on the following line of code: var searchLastCriteria = (SearchCriteria)Session.GetSafely(WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA); I'll explain the above here: SearchCriteria is an Enum with only two values Session is the HttpSessionState GetSafely is an extension method that looks like this: public static object GetSafely(this HttpSessionState source, string key) { try { return source[key]; } catch (Exception exc) { log.Info(exc); return null; } } WebConstants.KeyNames.SEARCH_LAST_CRITERIA is simply a constant I've tried everything to replicate this error, but I cannot reproduce it. I am beginning to think the stack trace is wrong. I thought perhaps the exception was actually coming from the GetSafely call, but it is swallowing the exceptions, so that can't be the case, and even if it was, it should show up in the stack trace. Is there anything in the line of code above that could possible throw an IndexOutOfRange exception? I know the line will throw an NullReferenceException if GetSafely returns null, and it will also throw an InvalidCastException if it returns anything that cannot be cast to SearchCriteria, but an IndexOutOfRange exception? • I want a function to return a type of the subclass its invoked from

  I want to have a function defined in a superclass that returns a value of the type of the subclass that is used to invoke the function. That is, say I have class A with a function plugh. Then I create subclasses B and C that extend A. I want B.plugh to return a B and C.plugh to return a C. Yes, they could return an A, but then the caller would have to either cast it to the right subtype, which is a pain when used a lot, or declare the receiving variable to be of the supertype, which loses type safety. So I was trying to do this with generics, writing something like this: class A<T extends A> { private T foo; public T getFoo() { return foo; } } class B extends A<B> { public void calcFoo() { foo=... whatever ... } } class C extends A<C> { public void calcFoo() { foo=... whatever ... } } This appears to work but it looks pretty ugly. For one thing, I get warnings on "class A". The compiler says that A is generic and I should specify the type. I guess it wants me to say "class A". But what would I put in for x? I think I could get stuck in an infinite loop here. It seems weird to write "class B extends A", but this causes no complaints, so maybe that's just fine. Is this the right way to do it? Is there a better way?

  I am attempting to use the answer in post: How do you sort an EntitySet<T> to expose an interface so that I can sort an EntitySet with a Binding list. I have created the class below and I get the following compiler error: "The type or namespace 'P' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or assembly reference?). Can someone tell me what the P means and which namespace I need to include to get the method below to compile? I am very new to delegates and lamba expressions. Also, can someone confirm that if I create a BindingList from my EntitySet that any modifications I make to the BindingList will be made to the EntitySet? Basically, I have an EntitySet that I need to sort and make changes to. • Complicated API issue with calling assemblies dynamically?

  I have an interesting challenge that I'm wondering if anyone here can give me some direction. I'm writing a .Net windows forms application that runs on a network and uses an SQL Server to save and pull data. I want to offer a mini "plugin" API, where developers can build their own assemblies and implement a specific interface (IDataManipulate). These assemblies then can be used by my application to call the interface functions and do something. I can create assemblies using my API, copy the file to a folder in my local hard drive and configure my application to use Reflection to call a specific function from the implemented interface (IDataManipulate.Execute). The problem: Since the application will be installed in multiple workstations in the network, is impossible to copy the plugin dlls the users will create to each machine. Solutions I tried: Solution 1 Copy the API dll to a network share. Problem: Requires AllowPartiallyTrustedCallersAttribute, which requires .Net singing, which I can't force from my users. Solution 2 (preferred) Serialize the dll object, save it to the database, deserialize it and call IDataManipulate.Execute. Problem: After deserialization, I try cast it to a IDataManipulate object but returns an error looking for the actual dll file. Solution 3 Save the dll bytes as byte[] to the database and recreate the dll at the local PC every time the user starts my application. Problem: Dll may have dependencies, which I don't know if I can detect. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

• How to manage large amounts of delegates and usercallbacks in C# async http library

  I'm coding a .NET library in C# for communicating with XBMC via its JSON RPC interface using HTTP. I coded and released a preliminary version but everything is done synchronously. I then recoded the library to be asynchronous for my own purposes as I was/am building an XBMC remote for WP7. I now want to release the new async library but want to make sure it's nice and tidy before I do. Due to the async nature a user initiates a request, supplies a callback method that matches my delegate and then handles the response once it's been received. The problem I have is that within the library I track a RequestState object for the lifetime of the request, it contains the http request/response as well as the user callback etc. as member variables, this would be fine if only one type of object was coming back but depending on what the user calls they may be returned a list of songs or a list of movies etc. My implementation at the moment uses a single delegate ResponseDataRecieved which has a single parameter which is a simple Object - As this has only be used by me I know which methods return what and when I handle the response I cast said object to the type I know it really is - List, List etc. A third party shouldn't have to do this though - The delegate signature should contain the correct type of object. So then I need a delegate for every type of response data that can be returned to the third party - The specific problem is, how do I handle this gracefully internally - Do I have a bunch of different RequestState objects that each have a different member variable for the different delegates? That doesn't "feel" right. I just don't know how to do this gracefully and cleanly.

• Trouble swapping values as keys in generic java BST class

  I was given a generic binary search tree class with the following declaration: public class BST<K extends Comparable<K>, V> I was asked to write a method that reverses the BST such that the values become the keys and keys become values. When I call the following method (defined in the class given) reverseDict.put(originalDict.get(key), key); I get the following two error messages from Netbeans: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: Uncompilable source code - Erroneous sym type: BST.put And also: no suitable method found for put(V,K) method BST.put(BST<K,V>.Node,K,V) is not applicable (actual and formal argument lists differ in length) method BST.put(K,V) is not applicable (actual argument V cannot be converted to K by method invocation conversion) where V,K are type-variables: V extends Object declared in method <K,V>reverseBST(BST<K,V>) K extends Comparable<K> declared in method <K,V>reverseBST(BST<K,V>) From what the error messages are telling me, since my values do not extend Comparable I am unable to use them as keys. If I am right, how can I get around that without changing the class given (maybe a cast)?

• creating new instance fails PHP

  I am relatively new to PHP and having some decent success however I am running into this issue: If I try to create a new instance of the class GenericEntryVO, I get a 500 error with little to no helpful error information. However, if I use a generic object as the result, I get no errors. I'd like to be able to cast this object as a GenericEntryVO as I am using AMFPHP to communicate serialize data with a Flex client.   Hi, I am a teaching assistant of a introductory programming course, and some students made this type of error: char name[20]; scanf("%s",&name); which is not surprising as they are learning... What is surprising is that, besides gcc warning, the code works (at least this part). I suspect it is because I cannot get the address of an array (as I cannot have & &x), but in this case the code should not compile.

• Python to C/C++ const char question

  I am extending Python with some C++ code. One of the functions I'm using has the following signature: int PyArg_ParseTupleAndKeywords(PyObject *arg, PyObject *kwdict, char *format, char **kwlist, ...); (link: http://docs.python.org/release/1.5.2p2/ext/parseTupleAndKeywords.html) The parameter of interest is kwlist. In the link above, examples on how to use this function are given. In the examples, kwlist looks like: static char *kwlist[] = {"voltage", "state", "action", "type", NULL}; When I compile this using g++, I get the warning: warning: deprecated conversion from string constant to ‘char*’ So, I can change the static char* to a static const char*. Unfortunately, I can't change the Python code. So with this change, I get a different compilation error (can't convert char** to const char**). Based on what I've read here, I can turn on compiler flags to ignore the warning or I can cast each of the constant strings in the definition of kwlist to char *. Currently, I'm doing the latter. What are other solutions? Sorry if this question has been asked before. I'm new.

  I have some files that contain logs of objects. Each file can store objects of a different type, but a single file is homogeneous -- it only stores objects of a single type. I would like to write a method that returns an array of these objects, and have the array be of a specified type (the type of objects in a file is known and can be passed as a parameter). Roughly, what I want is something like the following: public static <T> T[] parseLog(File log, Class<T> cls) throws Exception { ArrayList<T> objList = new ArrayList<T>(); FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream(log); ObjectInputStream in = new ObjectInputStream(fis); try { Object obj; while (!((obj = in.readObject()) instanceof EOFObject)) { T tobj = (T) obj; objList.add(tobj); } } finally { in.close(); } return objList.toArray(new T[0]); } The above code doesn't compile (there's an error on the return statement, and a warning on the cast), but it should give you the idea of what I'm trying to do. Any suggestions for the best way to do this?

Where I'm having trouble is finding the nodes where the attribute is contained in the string value instead of the string value be contained in the attribute. Here's my attempt so far. • How to read pair in freemarker

  Ok i'm having little trouble with reading pair. So I'm creating my pair private Pair<Integer, Integer> count(somethink) { int c1 = 2; int c2 = 4; return new Pair<Integer, Integer>(c1, c2); } And 'sending' it to ftl via java mv.addObject("counted", count(somethink)); I won't write everythink how it sends because I dont think it really matters with my issue. So i'm recieving it in "ftl". Then i was trying to 'read' it <#list counted?keys as key> <a href="#offerOrderTab"><@spring.message "someMsg"/>(${key}/${counted[key]})</a> </#list> After then i'm getting error Expecting a string, date or number here, Expression x is instead a freemarker.ext.beans.SimpleMethodModel As i suppose you dont iterate pairs (or I'm wrong?) i know its pair that contains only one key and one value but still i have to do send it that way and I thought its goin be to similar to iterating through map, in java i would use pair.first() and pair.second() but it doesn't work in ftl (ye i know it shouldnt work). I also tried to cast it to String by using ?string but it didnt work too

  I used, for(id value in values) to get the value from an NSArray. Now I want to store it in 2 dimensional float array[][]. When I try to assign the values to array it is giving error:incompatible types in assignment. I tried to cast the value but I got error: pointer value used where a floating point value was expected. I need to store the values in an 2 dimensional array . How can I make it ? • MongoDB search in C#

  I have a problem with querying MongoDB. In my code I have a method Get which has as a parametar a Dictionary. It should go through the database and query it, comparing string and then object. So, i always get a problem with this object part, QueryDocument won't take in an object type because it isn't an BsonValue. I have tried to cast it but it won't work. Do you have any suggestions ? • Force calling the derived class implementation within a generic function in C#?

  Ok so I'm currently working with a set of classes that I don't have control over in some pretty generic functions using these objects. Instead of writing literally tens of functions that essentially do the same thing for each class I decided to use a generic function instead. Now the classes I'm dealing with are a little weird in that the derived classes share many of the same properties but the base class that they are derived from doesn't. One such property example is .Parent which exists on a huge number of derived classes but not on the base class and it is this property that I need to use. For ease of understanding I've created a small example as follows: class StandardBaseClass {} // These are simulating the SMO objects class StandardDerivedClass : StandardBaseClass { public object Parent { get; set; } } static class Extensions { public static object GetParent(this StandardDerivedClass sdc) { return sdc.Parent; } public static object GetParent(this StandardBaseClass sbc) { throw new NotImplementedException("StandardBaseClass does not contain a property Parent"); } // This is the Generic function I'm trying to write and need the Parent property. public static void DoSomething<T>(T foo) where T : StandardBaseClass { object Parent = ((T)foo).GetParent(); } } In the above example calling DoSomething() will throw the NotImplemented Exception in the base class's implementation of GetParent(), even though I'm forcing the cast to T which is a StandardDerivedClass. This is contrary to other casting behaviour where by downcasting will force the use of the base class's implementation. I see this behaviour as a bug. Has anyone else out there encountered this?

  Hello, 1)Let's say I've this form: <%Using(Html.BeginForm()){%> <% = Html.Hidden("myObject", (cast to the appropriate type)ViewData["KeyForMyObject"]%> <input type = "submit" "Submit Object"> <%}%> 2) Here's the Action which's supposed to intercept the value of the object public ActionResult MyAction(Type myObject) { //Do Something with the object } Here's my question: What type of objects the Hidden field can support? In fact, when ViewData["KeyForMyObject"] contains a string, int, or bool, myAction is able to retrieve the value. But, when it comes to objects, such as List, and dictionary, nothing happens. When I debug to check the local values, I see null for Type myObject in the MyMethod. So what are the rules in MVC when it comes to a List or Dictionary? ================================= EDIT To make things simpler, can I write something like this <% = Html.Hidden("contactDic", (Dictionary<string, string>) ViewData["contacts"])%> and expect to retrieve the dictionary in the action Method like this public ActionResult myMethod(Dictionary<string, string> contactDic) { //Do something with the dictionary } Thanks for Helping
