• Dimming the backlight is irreversible on a Samsung Q210 notebook, what do I do?

  I'm new to the community, although I have been using Ubuntu since 2010. I have a Samsung Q210 notebook; Specs: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU P8400 @ 2.26GHz × 2 4 Gigs RAM Nvidia 9200m GS (although system information in Ubuntu doesn't know) 194 GB HD OS: Ubuntu 11.10 Kernel is 3.0.0-12-generic-pae Although Samsung seems to be infamous for problems with Ubuntu, after upgrading to Oneiric, finally the FN Brightness Buttons are recognized. The only problem is, after dimming the backlight for a fixed amount of steps (3 or 4, I dare not count now because that would mean rebooting because I can't see anything), the display goes completely dark and using the FN buttons to brighten the backlight does not work anymore (before reaching that threshold, going brighter after dimming works). Now what do I do? File a bug report? If not, what then? If yes, how? Not sure... guess I should ask here first.. thanks for answering in advance.

Is the mismatch between the Driver version (1.0.24) and the Library and Utilities versions (1.0.25) the cause of my problem, or should I be looking elsewhere? In answers to the question "Will ALSA 1.0.25 version have time to enter 12.04?" I read that 1.0.25 would be part of the new kernel, but my kernel version appears to be newer than the original release.

  I am a student and I have made websites for some companies before but now I would like to make a generic website for myself but dont know how to get started as I never had to deal with hosting or bandwidth before. I am looking to make a website that will provide users with information about me. In the future I might add things such as ordering or buying products but for now the idea is to provide information only. I was told not to go for any webhoster outside of Canada as I might risk the confidential integrity of my users or myself. I have no idea where to get started or what I need. I now also have to deal with possible security issues or security holes I may leave in my website creation... • Boot-up hangs unless I manually select the kernel in the bootloader

  In my stock Ubuntu install (forgot which critter its named for, about one year old), I am able to boot up normally only if I manually select the kernel in the bootloader (Grub). If I step away and it boots from the default, the system will hang with the word "Ubuntu" on a graphics screen and a few white/red blinking dots beneath it. umb@digdug:~$ uname -a Linux digdug 2.6.32-42-generic #95-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 25 15:57:54 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux Synaptics says I have 'grub-pc' version 1.98-1ubuntu-13 installed. My grub.cfg does have default="0" which I would expect to make the default be the first kernel shown in the selection screen. The system is a laptop with an i7 processor, and I have had trouble with some kernels not being able to boot at all in the past, and power management is not working perfectly, but I have not had problems booting the latest kernel (2.6.32-42) if I select it manually in Grub. Any idea what is going on here and how can I fix it so that I can re-boot unattended?

  Hi, In Ror or Django or web2py you can "describe" a database (as a set of classes that remaps to tables) and the framework (having being provided with a connection string to the desired database) generates the tables, fields, relations and in the case of RoR and web2py it also keeps it up-to-date (eg, removing a class drops the table, adding a property to the class triggers an "alter table add" etc). Is there any perl module that does the same? Eg, it takes the YAML / XML / JSON description of a database as input and modifies / generates the database accordingly? Thanks in advance.

• Explanation of contribute_to_class

  I'm attempted to extend code, and have come across an issue, I don't understand a line of code. I know the outcome of it - but I don't understand how it happens and am naturally enough scared to change it. The line of code I've come across is this: MyGenericRelation().contribute_to_class(model, 'field_name') The result of this code is a field with 'field_name' is added to the 'model' and from what I gather the objects inside the field are a list of type X (part of MyGenericRelation). I'm wondering if anyone can explain how this works. As in, why do I get a list of X objects attached to 'field_name' and if does it have to be generic relations prior to contribute_to_class or would using an actual model type, say 'Y' just give me a list of Y's. To be honest, I am more interested in the affect and functionality of the contribute_to_class method.

• Use hotplug and turn on/off PCI device for replacing NIC

  How can I turn off the PCI slots and change the device (especially NIC) without shutting the server down? I found a similar question (How do I turn off PCI devices?) but there are no /sys/bus/pci/slot and no files in /sys/bus/pci/slots.   I'm working on my first Symfony project with Doctrine, and I've run into a hitch. I'm trying to express a game with two players. The relationship I want to have is PlayerOne and PlayerTwo each being keyed to an ID in the Users table. This is part of what I've got so far: Game: actAs: { Timestampable:- } columns: id: { type: integer, notnull: true, unique: true } startDate: { type: timestamp, notnull: true } playerOne: { type: integer, notnull: true } playerTwo: { type: integer, notnull: true } winner: { type: integer, notnull:true, default:0 } relations: User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerOne, foreign: id} User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerTwo, foreign: id} That doesn't work. It builds fine, but the SQL it generates only includes a constraint for playerTwo. I've tried a few other things: User: { onUpdate: cascade, local: [playerOne, playerTwo], foreign: id} Also: User: [{ onUpdate: cascade, local: playerOne, foreign: id}, { onUpdate: cascade, local: playerTwo, foreign: id}] Those last two throw errors when I try to build. Is there anyone out there who understands what I'm trying to do and can help me achieve it?

• SEO blog Indexing: wordpress.com subdomain vs a registered domain?

  I've used WordPress for a few of my client's sites, mostly small businesses and eCommerce sites. I have found through Google Analytics as well as the All in One Webmaster plugin that when it comes to social media, using WordPress is a surefire way of getting your site indexed by Google and occasionally Bing and Yahoo. Since I am a heavy WP user, I'd like to contribute by registering a dot WordPress domain for my portfolio. When using a WP installation concurrently with a WP domain, e.g. myportfolio.wordpress.com, will the site be more or less likely to be indexed rather a generic myportfolio.com domain? I've seen mixed opinions where people seem to favor a WP domain for URL output where others say that it's a moot point, and that Google will not favor a WP domain over a dot com domain as long as your meta tags are updated and content is keyword optimized. I tend to disagree and believe a WP domain would more likely be indexed and output more URLs over an individual, laconic domain like myportfolio.com. Am I wrong?

  hi, i am making a database for an accounting/sales type system similar to a car sales database and would like to make some transactions for the following real world actions salesman creates new product shipped onto floor (itempk, car make, year, price).   salesman changes price.   salesman creates sale entry for product sold (salespk, itemforeignkey, price sold, salesman).   salesman cancels item for removed product.   salesman cancels sale for cancelled sale    the examples i have found online are too generic...like this is a transaction... i would like something resembling what i am trying to do to understand it.  anybody have some good similar or related sql examples i can look at to design these? do people use transactions for sales databases?  or if you have done this kind of sql transaction before could you make an outline for how these could be made?  thanks  my thread so far on stack overflow... http://stackoverflow.com/q/4975484/613799

• Mouse and keyboard stop working after suspend or screensaver lock

  If I leave the computer and let it run into screensaver and lock the screen, the mouse left click won't go back to work. If I suspend the computer, the keyboard won't get back to work. It started after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04. Any tips to solve this problem?   The official Java tutorial on generics explains type erasure and why it was added to the compiler: When a generic type is instantiated, the compiler translates those types by a technique called type erasure — a process where the compiler removes all information related to type parameters and type arguments within a class or method. Type erasure enables Java applications that use generics to maintain binary compatibility with Java libraries and applications that were created before generics. This most likely was a pragmatic approach, or perhaps the least painful one. • Cleaning a dataset of song data - what sort of problem is this?

  I have a set of data about songs. Each entry is a line of text which includes the artist name, song title, and some extra text. Some entries are only "extra text". My goal is to resolve as many of these as possible to songs on Spotify using their web API. My strategy so far has been to search for the entry via the API - if there are no results, apply a transformation such as "remove all text between ( )" and search again. I have a list of heuristics and I've had reasonable success with this but as the code gets more and more convoluted I keep thinking there must be a more generic and consistent way. I don't know where to look - any suggestions for what to try, topics to study, buzzwords to google?

• Keyboard Mouse Problem

  I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop (Core 2 Duo Sony Vaio) and am having a problem with the external keyboard and mouse. When I first logged in the left mouse button does not work, this can be solved by unplugging the external keyboard/mouse's USB connector and then plugging it back in again. But Then randomly other problems happen. (Shift gets stuck, keys don't work etc) The keyboard and mouse are a generic brand wireless (A4 Tech) that I got for cheap. Both work OK under windows so this is a major pain.

• Regular wireless dropouts on new lenovo T440s in Ubuntu 14.04

  Over the last 24 hours my wireless has dropped out regularly. I've tested to make sure it isn't my router (my phone and everyone in the house isn't having problems using the wifi). This is a brand-new installation of Ubuntu 14.04 and according to uname I'm running kernel 3.13.0-24-generic. Now, my laptop has an Intel 7260AC dual band wireless card and I've read that Ubuntu has been having trouble with these. I notice that at http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034398.htm There are some updated drivers for my kernel version. However I have no idea how to update the kernel to use these drivers instead so that I can see if this will fix it. Can anyone help? These dropouts are really annoying. EDIT: Upgrading to 3.14.6 did not help.

• What norms/API for monitoring my servers?

  I have a dozen server applications installed on my customers intranets (they can send http requests over the internet but cannot be called from outside). They're written in various technologies, mainly java and Go. I want them to regularly push information about their state towards a central server which is visible on internet. Some of this information is generic (is it ON ?), some is specific (size of a cache in an application for example). The main goal is to be able to make a small web page on which I could instantly check the state of every servers. And maybe later add some kind of notification in case of problem. Obviously I can do this by writing a few dozen lines of code each side (or a little more if I put this data in a database) but in order to ease future evolution, it could be interesting to use some existing norms or libraries. So, what are the current opensource free and light solutions to do this, preferably with no central configuration when I add a server ? I'd prefer a norm over a library.

• Why doesn't 12.04 recognize my ATI Radeon X300SE graphics card?

  So far everything including the BCM4321 card is working, however, the OEM ATI Radeon X300SE (RV370) is not recognized. When I go into system details the card comes up as unknown. When I run lspci the card shows up as: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] 01:00.1 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 [Radeon X300SE] I have attempted check Additional Drivers but the card does not show up as needing a driver. So far this is causing the system to run warmer as the processor is doing a bit of the work to run Unity and any full screen videos tend to be rather choppy. Is there an available driver that will fix my issue and what is the install method? I am not scared to run a terminal so no worries there, as long as I have instructions, I can find my way. I am running under 12.04 LTS Kernel 3.2.0-25-generic-pae

• What's a good starting point to learn about JIT compilers?

  I've spent the past few months learning about stack based virtual machines, parsers, compilers, and some elementary things about hardware architecture. I've also written a few parsers and compilers for C like languages to understand the generic parser/compiler pipeline. Now I'd like to take my understanding further by learning about optimizing compilers and JIT compilers but I'm having a hard time finding material at the right level. I don't yet understand enough to dive into a code base like PyPy or LuaJIT but I also know more than what most introductory compiler books have to offer. So what are some good books for an intermediate beginner like to me to look into?

  I have two entities A and B. They are related with many to many relation. Entity A can be related up to 100 B entities. Entity B can be related up to 10000 A entities. I need quick way to select for example 30 A entities, that have relation with specified B entities, filtered and sorted by different attributes. Here how I see ideal solution: I put all information I know about A entities, including their relations with B entities into single row (Special table with SET field) then add all necessary indexes. The problem is that you can't use index while querying by SET field. What should I do? I can replace database with something different, if that'll help.

  Problem: Microphone in or Line in microphone audio is instantly captured and sinked to the local speaker, cause horrible echo problem About my system: (NO PulseAudio used (cause its always crash and unstable for my system/hardware, so auto killed and never used) I have ALSA 1.0.25 version running in Ubuntu 12.04 / 64-bit, with random kernel installed: kernel 3.5.0-17-generic kernel 3.8.x kernel 3.11.x But the echo problem is not resolved after trying all kernel. So, last option left now is to use ALSA 1.0.27 to see if that solves the problem. Is there any away to use ALSA 1.0.27 from any PPA to install in the Ubuntu 12.04? (without making it from source, to avoid breaking other packages and dependencies)

My CV have 3 pages but for this company is not enough detailed. ;) What structure have your CV in programming languages, frameworks, technology, third-party libraries? Any sample of good structured CV. (as pdf file) Of course I had used the google but I found a dozen same old things. I would like have someting orignal and fresh. Any inspiration? I do not know what to write for example C #. C# OOP, delagate, event, generic, LINQ other WPF control, data template, converter, style, triggers..? Prims, Caliburn, MEF ? • Alps touchpad detected as mouse dell inspiron n5110

  Now I know that this has been asked several times here but I couldn't find any decent solution to it. So I am running the latest Ubuntu on my dell n5110 and my touchpad is detected as a mouse, So I don't have the touchpad options avaliable. can't use multitouch and can't disable it either. I have tried the dkms driver: http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/alps-touchpad/psmouse-alps-0.10/ but when installing it with dpkg I get the following error: ERROR (dkms apport): unable to determine source package for psmouse-alps-dkms Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.2.0-25-generic-pae (i686) Consult /var/lib/dkms/psmouse-alps/0.10/build/make.log for more information. I have installed all the updates as well. Can someone help me out with this issue?
