String literals in python

Hello, Is there a way to declare a string variable in python such that everything inside of it is automatically escaped, or has its literal character value? I'm NOT asking how to escape the quotes with slashes, that's obvious. What I'm asking for is a general purpose way for making EVERYTHING in a string literal so that I don't have to manually go through and escape everything for very large strings. Anyone know of a solution? Thanks!

How I can do this with JavaScript? Including some static html files?

Hi, Where can we place static html files in our war file? For example, a default project has this: war/projectname.html I'd like to just make a few static folders with static pages that are like: war/projectname.html war/signup/index.html war/about/index.html so that my users can just hit those static pages like: www.myproject.com/signup www.myproject.com/about where would I put folders like that in our project tree? I tried putting them under war/, just beside projectname.html (like above), but they don't seem to be available there, I just get a 404 error, Thanks

How to return a variable from a javascript function into html body.

Hi there, I am still new to javascript, and I am trying to get a function to return a variable using html & javascript. Basically the function should just return whichever radio button that the user clicks on, although at the moment I don't see anything being returned at all. Can I define which characters are allowed to 'break' a word?

Hey guys, I'm showing up veeeery long URLs in my Safari extension. Obviously, they can't fit on a single line. Currently, word breaking rules make it so most URLs are on two lines: the first one is rather short and ends with the ? symbol, and the other is ridiculously long and contains all the rest of the GET parameters. I'd like to make it so words also break on the & symbol, without screwing up copy-paste if possible. I've tried to replace every & with &\u00ad (& + the soft hyphen character), but it's kind of weird to see the hyphen after the & when there really isn't any in the URL. I thought there was something in store with CSS3 for that kind of problem, but I can't find it. Any suggestion welcome, as long as it works with Safari.

Writing all the html of a document with jquery instead of in the page body?

I'm a UI person currently working on a web application, where most of the people I work with are back end developers. I'm currently at a disagreement with them about whether or not the above is a prudent thing to do. This application doe use quite a bit of JavaScript, and wouldn't even work without it unfortunately. This being the case, One of the back end developers that I'm working with is claiming that pages could and even SHOULD be build completely with JavaScript or jquery. This caught me completely off guard. We're talking about div tags, lists, background images and text here. I'm trying to explain to him that this isn't the right way to do things at all, and from a best practices perspective: content(html) should be separate from presentation(css), and behavior(script etc.). I know that it's possible to write html in jquery, although I haven't done it, but am I wrong in my thinking that this isn't the way things should be done. Is it even possible to write ALL the code with jquery? would love to hear any thoughts either way, as I will be discussing this with him again tomorrow.

Space in img:s "ALT" attribute good/bad for search engines?

I am trying to make it easier for search engines to crawl my website, as it is almost 100% dynamic. I have a couple of transparent images which are actually links to sections of my page. I wonder, if I add an "alt" attribute containing space characters to explain the target, will this improve SE rankings etc? For example: <img src="blabla.png" alt="post new classified"> Or will this just result in errors? Ànd, what should I put in the alt attribute if I can't use space? PS: Another different and short question, will javascript-rich content make a page less important to crawlers? Thanks

ash scripting: space-containing variable refuses to be grepped

I am trying to run the script listed at http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=70866&page=2 on its intended hardware, a Nokia Linux phone running BusyBox ash. The script receives the name of WiFi network as a parameter, and tries to connect the phone to it. I suspect the script works, but my SSID, BU (802.1x), has space and parentheses in it. So when I type at the command prompt autoconnect.sh BU\ $802.1x$ I get various errors. First, LIST=`iwconfig wlan0 | awk -F":" '/ESSID/{print $2}'` if [ $LIST = "\"$1\"" ]; then ...fails, even I am connected to the network. The error is not avoided by using single or double quotes instead of escaping characters at the command prompt. Second, if [ -z `iwlist wlan0 scan | grep -m 1 -o \"$1\"` ]; then echo SSID \"$1\" not found; shows that grep does not find the string, although the same grep, typed directly into the command prompt, does find 'BU (802.1x)'. How do I quote $1 in the two circumstances above so that it will work with my network SSID, containing spaces and parentheses? Thank you.

iPhone SDK - Comparing characters in string

Basically what I'm trying to do is compare 2 strings one from a plist and one from the user's input. I use a while loop to step through each character and compare it and if true then I increase an integer then once the loop has finished I work out the percentage correct / similarity of the plist answer and the user's answer. I seem to be having a problem however as the only return I'm getting is 0. Below is the code I'm using... The code below is all functioning and the question no longer requires answering... Best way to escape characters before jquery post ASP.NET MVC

Hello, I am semi-new to ASP.NET MVC. I am building an app that is used internally for my company. The scenario is this: There are two Html.Listbox's. One has all database information, and the other is initally empty. The user would add items from the database listbox to the empty listbox. Every time the user adds a command, I call a js function that calls an ActionResult "AddCommand" in my EditController. In the controller, the selected items that are added are saved to another database table. Here is the code (this gets called every time an item is added): function Add(listbox) { ... //skipping initializing code for berevity var url = "/Edit/AddCommand/" + cmd; $.post(url); } So the problem occurs when the 'cmd' is an item that has a '/', ':', '%', '?', etc (some kind of special character) So what I'm wondering is, what's the best way to escape these characters? Right now I'm checking the database's listbox item's text, and rebuilding the string, then in the Controller, I'm taking that built string and turning it back into its original state. So for example, if the item they are adding is 'Cats/Dogs', I am posting 'Cats[SLASH]Dogs' to the controller, and in the controller changing it back to 'Cats/Dogs'. Obviously this is a horrible hack, so I must be missing something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My thoughts on the future of the web with respect to flash, plugins, etc…

More than 10 years ago I was coding Java applets. They were great at the time because I could reasonably expect them to run the same way in Netscape and Internet Explorer. I could also reliably do asynchronous networking back to the server. But then, Microsoft pulled their native Java runtime from Windows and Internet Explorer. It got a lot harder to get applets running in people’s browsers. So I started writing ActiveX controls for IE and Java applets for Netscape. Then I switched to Flash, not for too long, but it was enough for me to see that it was a capable and curious implementation of animation, multimedia and script. I even wrote a few Silverlight controls, but then I stopped. I stepped back from all of the “richness” and “interactivity” and I thought about things like accessibility and SEO. I wondered how my apps and sites might appear to the greater world. I wondered how the developers I am working with, or who might be inheriting my code down the road, might interact with it. And I thought to myself, What the hell was I thinking? Those embedded controls are not what the web is about, and they run contrary to nearly all of the things that makes the web exciting and fosters innovation within and around. Those plugins or controls, or whatever you want to refer to them as, are only stop-gaps that fill a hole in the basic HTML/Script/CSS specifications, and that’s all they should ever be used for. Full stop. Period. For instance, I still make use of a nifty little flash control called SWFUpload because it lets me check file size before an upload starts. I can do the same thing from a Silverlight control. But rest assured, if I could do this from native javascript, I would in a second. In fact, the only reason I chose SWFUpload over a ton of other alternatives is that it has a great javascript API so I can do (nearly) all of the UI in regular HTML. And I ALWAYS provide a non-flash alternative for uploading, and for the rest of any website where the designer has insisted on some piece of creativity that requires flash (usually because the designer is also the flash developer, but that’s an aside…). The web is about openness, and about exposing that openness in such a way that it can be taken advantage of as a small part of a greater whole. Sure we need security and authentication and ssl and all that stuff, but for me, its something more profound. For me, the majority of what the web is, is about exposing something that delivers meaning. What meaning can we derive from an <object> tag? more later - joel

Is there a way to get a URL from what you posted? I don't want to use the GET function on the post, because what I want to make is something like this: http://testwebsiteblahblahblah.com/forminput?formID=817 Is there a way to do it with JavaScript, HTML (CSS), ASP, or PHP ?

Creating <li> with JavaScript in an XUL Application

Hi! I try to create some li elements in my XUL Application. Theres only the text of the elements shown, but no list typical bullets and linebreaks. Example: text text text text text text text Heres the JS Code I use to create the list: var li = document.createElement('html:li'); var txt = document.createTextNode("only shown as simple text"); li.appendChild(txt); document.getElementById('someList').appendChild(li); HTML: <html:ul id="someList"> <html:li>this is shown in correct list style</html:li> </html:ul> I tried 'html:li' and also 'li' but nothing worked. Any suggestions?

Turning HTML character entities to 'regular' letters... why is it only partially working?

I'm using all of the below to take a field called 'code' from my database, get rid of all the HTML entities, and print it 'as usual' to the site: <?php $code = preg_replace('~&#x([0-9a-f]+);~ei', 'chr(hexdec("\\1"))', $code); $code = preg_replace('~&#([0-9]+);~e', 'chr("\\1")', $code); $code = html_entity_decode($code); ?> However the exported code still looks like this: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src=â€™img/the_image.pngâ€™); See what's going on there? How many other things can I run on the string to turn them into darn regular characters?! Thanks! Jack

iOS Touch Icon through XLSX file?

I'm setting up some iPads, and pointing Safari to www.mywebsite.com/spreadsheet.xlsx and it's displaying the document fine. That part is OK. I'm just wondering if there is a way to add a iOS Icon to the document so I can save it to the springboard of the iPad? Maybe embedding the document in HTML? PHP could also possibly be used but I'm really not sure how I would go about doing this, has anyone managed anything like this before?

asp.net mvc outputting json with backslashes ( escape) despite many attemps to filter
