• Variable names for Contact Information bits

  I am in the middle of refactoring code and would like to get some ideas on variable naming so that my new names clearly represent the data they hold. I have a class called ContactMethod which makes sense to me; each instance is a different way to contact someone. My problem comes when naming the properties of ContactMethod. For example, one instance might be a Fax number of 555-555-5555 while another could be an Email address of [email protected]; I've got a property called contactMethodType to hold the values "fax" or "email", but I don't know what to call the "555-555-5555" or "[email protected]" part. Has anyone here created a good generic name for this piece of contact information? (PS - the old convention was to call it a "Phone" with fields "phoneType" holding the "fax"/"email" value and "phoneId" holding the number/address. Yuck.)

• Remote Desktop advice

  Coming from Windows, so that is what my expectations are based on. I have a Ubuntu desktop edition instance running as a virtual machine on a server. I would like to use it as my primary open source dev environment but the VNC tools I have used don't seem to be as rich as "Remote Desktop Connection" in Windows. The two things that are missing for me: connecting/logging into a non-console user sessions dynamically resizing the graphical resolution based on the size of the remote desktop window device sharing (USB devices plugged into client shared with remote) Is there an appropriate client that I can run on Windows to connect to my ubuntu dev instance that provides these capabilities?

  I have a micro ubuntu instance on ec2. I have done a passwd to set it to simple password. I have installed vsftpd on the ec2 instance. • Is there a better way to handle data abstraction in this example?

  I'm building an application that retrieves Sharepoint list data via a web service SPlists.Lists. To create an instance of the web service, I have the following class: class SharepointServiceCreator { public SPlists.Lists createService() { listsService.Url = "http://wss/sites/SPLists/_vti_bin/lists.asmx"; listsService.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials; SPlists.Lists listsService=new SPlists.Lists(); } } I'm concerned that this isn't good OOP abstraction, though, because in order to create this service elsewhere in my application, I would need the following code: class someClass { public void someMethod() { SharepointServiceCreator s=new SharepointServiceCreator() SPlists.Lists listService=s.createService() } } Having to use declare the instance of listService in someMethod as type SPlists.Lists seems wrong, because it means that someClass needs to know about how SharepointServiceCreator is implemented. Or is this ok?

  I was looking for a way to share my application created files through Whatsapp. I found we can chat using custom URL scheme provided by whatsapp : https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/iphone/23559013. But, to share files of my app, read that I have to use DicumentIntercationController. So, is there any smaple available? Also, when I read about apple docs, it says, "Create an instance of the UIDocumentInteractionController class for each file you want to interact with" (https://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/FileManagement/Conceptual/DocumentInteraction_TopicsForIOS/Articles/PreviewingandOpeningItems.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40010410-SW1). So is it necessary to create instance for each file? I just want to share the files as and when i receive it through my service to my app. Thanks for the help in advance.

• Does anyone know of a program like Elastics for Linux?

  On mac I would use Elastics (http://tundrabot.com/elastics) To kind of, monitor my EC2 instances. Most important to me was that it worked across several accounts and that it allowed me to connect to a running instance via ssh or RDP. This was the only real feature I care about. I can not always keep the IP address of the server that is running because ec2 is elastic, and it changes frequently. Is there any tool, like Elastics for linux/unity? Again it should support several accounts and be able to give me the IP addresses of the instance I select.

  I would like to implement some kind of manager class in my application. It will be in charge of loading textures, processing them, distributing them etc... At first, I wanted to make a global variable that simply contains an instance of my manager class. I found this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4646577/global-variables-in-java. However, the users there seem to recommend to never use global variables. Fine then, I once heard about Singletons, so I though I could use that instead. I mean, creating just one instance of my manager class sounds good. However, I found this other question: When is Singleton appropriate?, which basically tells me that Singletons are, in most scenarios, some kind of anti-pattern. Now I am a bit lost - what other approach can I take to create my manager class, whose only requirement is to be accessible from anywhere?

  This question is more a design oriented question than a code specific question. I am new to PHP and I am planning to use PDO as a data access layer. Say for instance I have a class called CITY. Now if I need to create an instance of this class, what is the best technique. Should have a singleton DB access class which is used to write and read data from the db layer. OR should I delegate it to the individual class object. For example if I invoke city.save() (city is a class), then the city class will handle the saving of that city object's data into the database. Excuse my ignorance but i have a java background and therefore trying to understand what is the best design principle for data management when using php.

  In ASP.net web service if the above isn't specified , what is the response format by default? Also, if my web service below: [WebMethod()] public List<Sample> GenerateSamples(string[][] data) { ResultsFactory f = new ResultsFactory(data); List<Sample> samples = f.GenerateSamples(); return samples; } returns the list of objects, If I change the response format to JSON, I have to change the return type to string, then how do I access objects in my javascript? The way things are now, I can use samples array and access each object and its properties as I normally would in any OOP code, which is very convenient, and everything works no problem, but I just wanted to make sure that I am not missing anything in my set up. I took the basics of combining Jquery's ajax with asp.net from Encosia side, and the response type wasn't mentioned there - I read it on another site and am I not sure how vital it is.

• Jquery Fancybox not working after postback

  I have a Fancybox (or more accurately) a number of fancy boxes on an asp.net page. My Fancybox (jquery plugin) works fine until a postback occurs on the page then it refuses to work. Any thoughts? Anyone experienced similar behaviour? UPDATE : Some Code.. I have a databound repeater with a fancybox on each repeating item. They are instanciated by (outside the repeater) $(document).ready(function() { $("a.watchvideo").fancybox({ 'overlayShow': false, 'frameWidth' : 480, 'frameHeight' : 400 }); }); The anchor tag is repeated.. href="#watchvideo_<%#Eval("VideoId")%" As is a div with id="watchvideo_<%#Eval("VideoId") %> As is a script element that instanciates the flash movies Yes the VideoIds are being output the the page. UPDATE : It's not a problem with the flash.. It is not a problem with the flash as i've tried it without the flash, it wont even pop a window with a simple message in. • How to use HtmlEncode with TemplateFields, Data Binding, and a GridView

  I have a GridView bound to an ObjectDataSource. I've got it supporting editing as well, which works just fine. However, I'd like to safely HtmlEncode text that is displayed as we do allow special characters in certain fields. This is a cinch to do with standard BoundFields, as I just set HtmlEncode to true. But in order to setup validation controls, one needs to use TemplateFields instead. How do I easily add HtmlEncoding to output this way? This is an ASP.NET 2.0 project, so I'm using the newer data binding shortcuts (e.g. Eval and Bind).   Java Concurrency In Practice by Brian Goetz provides an example of a efficient scalable cache for concurrent use. The final version of the example showing the implementation for class Memoizer (pg 108) shows such a cache. I am wondering why the class is not annotated with @ThreadSafe? The client, class Factorizer, of the cache is properly annotated with @ThreadSafe. The appendix states that if a class is not annotated with either @ThreadSafe or @Immutable that it should be assumed that it isn't thread safe. Memoizer seems thread-safe though. • How can I access the group of a linq group-by query from a nested repeater control?

  I'm using a linq group by query (with two grouping parameters) and would like to use the resulting data in a nested repeater. var dateGroups = from row in data.AsEnumerable() group row by new { StartDate = row["StartDate"], EndDate = row["EndDate"] }; "data" is a DataTable from an SqlDataAdapter-filled DataSet. "dateGroups" is used in the parent repeater, and I can access the group keys using Eval("key.StartDate") and Eval("key.EndDate"). Since dateGroups actually contains all the data rows grouped neatly by Start/End date, I'd like to access those rows to display the data in a child repeater. To what would I set the child repeater's DataSource? I have tried every expression in markup I could think of; I think the problem is that I'm trying to access an anonymous member (and I don't know how.) In case it doesn't turn out to be obvious, what would be the expression to access the elements in each iteration of the child repeater? Is there an expression that would let me set the DataSource in the markup, or will it have to be in the codebehind on some event in the parent repeater?

The code behind is connected to the protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) event. There are two items on the screen (two rows inside the table). • Looking for a workaround for IE 6/7 "Unspecified Error" bug when accessing offsetParent; using ASP.N

  I'm using jQuery UI's draggable and droppable libraries in a simple ASP.NET proof of concept application. This page uses the ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel to do partial page updates. The page allows a user to drop an item into a trashcan div, which will invoke a postback that deletes a record from the database, then rebinds the list (and other controls) that the item was drug from. All of these elements (the draggable items and the trashcan div) are inside an ASP.NET UpdatePanel. Here is the dragging and dropping initialization script: function initDragging() { $(".person").draggable({helper:'clone'}); $("#trashcan").droppable({ accept: '.person', tolerance: 'pointer', hoverClass: 'trashcan-hover', activeClass: 'trashcan-active', drop: onTrashCanned }); } $(document).ready(function(){ initDragging(); var prm = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance(); prm.add_endRequest(function() { initDragging(); }); }); function onTrashCanned(e,ui) { var id = $('input[id$=hidID]', ui.draggable).val(); if (id != undefined) { $('#hidTrashcanID').val(id); __doPostBack('btnTrashcan',''); } } When the page posts back, partially updating the UpdatePanel's content, I rebind the draggables and droppables. When I then grab a draggable with my cursor, I get an "htmlfile: Unspecified error." exception. I can resolve this problem in the jQuery library by replacing elem.offsetParent with calls to this function that I wrote: function IESafeOffsetParent(elem) { try { return elem.offsetParent; } catch(e) { return document.body; } } I also have to avoid calls to elem.getBoundingClientRect() as it throws the same error. For those interested, I only had to make these changes in the jQuery.fn.offset function in the Dimensions Plugin. My questions are: Although this works, are there better ways (cleaner; better performance; without having to modify the jQuery library) to solve this problem? If not, what's the best way to manage keeping my changes in sync when I update the jQuery libraries in the future? For, example can I extend the library somewhere other than just inline in the files that I download from the jQuery website. Update: @some It's not publicly accessible, but I will see if SO will let me post the relevant code into this answer. Just create an ASP.NET Web Application (name it DragAndDrop) and create these files. Don't forget to set Complex.aspx as your start page. • Getting gridview column value as parameter for javascript function

  I have a gridview with certain number of columns and the ID column where I want to get the value from is currently set to visible = false. The other column is a TemplateField column (LinkButton) and as the user clicks on the button it will grab the value from the ID column and pass the value to one of my javascript function. • Inserting a Variable String into the javascript prototype expression

  Dear experts, Pardon me for giving you a confusing title on this problem. I'm really confused and i don't know how to put it in other words. So here is what I what to accomplish. I am making a Custom Javascript Object to store data. I have automated this process and inserted each instance of the object into an array. I am making a loop statement to invoke the unique property value of each instance of the object. When I want to use an expression, the property name of the object would be variable since i don't know which one it is. Basically I need to incorporate a string value into the prototype expression. e.g document.getElementById('text').style."fontsize"=value; since I cannot do this directly, i thought possibly I could use the eval function: eval('document.getElementById("text").style.' + buttons[i].cssvalue + '="39px";'); but this still doesn't work. Can this be fixed or ss there an alternative way to accomplish this? If there are some unclear stuff, please point out and I will try to elaborate. Thanks in advance.

• Is the Cloud ready for an Enterprise Java web application? Seeking a JEE hosting advice.

  Greetings to all the smart people around here! I'd like to ask whether it is feasible or a good idea at all to deploy a Java enterprise web application to a Cloud such as Amazon EC2. More exactly, I'm looking for infrastructure options for an application that shall handle few hundred users with long but neither CPU nor memory intensive sessions. I'm considering dedicated servers, virtual private servers (VPSs) and EC2. I've noticed that there is a project called JBoss Cloud so people are working on enabling such a deployment, on the other hand it doesn't seem to be mature yet and I'm not sure that the cloud is ready for this kind of applications, which differs from the typical cloud-based applications like Twitter. Would you recommend to deploy it to the cloud? What are the pros and cons? The application is a Java EE 5 web application whose main function is to enable users to compose their own customized Product by combining the available Parts. It uses stateless and stateful session beans and JPA for persistence of entities to a RDBMS and fetches information about Parts from the company's inventory system via a web service. Aside of external users it's used also by few internal ones, who are authenticated against the company's LDAP. The application should handle around 300-400 concurrent users building their product and should be reasonably scalable and available though these qualities are only of a medium importance at this stage. I've proposed an architecture consisting of a firewall (FW) and load balancer supporting sticky sessions and https (in the Cloud this would be replaced with EC2's Elastic Load Balancing service and FW on the app. servers, in a physical architecture the load-balancer would be a HW), then two physical clustered application servers combined with web servers (so that if one fails, a user doesn't loose his/her long built product) and finally a database server. The DB server would need a slave backup instance that can replace the master instance if it fails. This should provide reasonable availability and fault tolerance and provide good scalability as long as a single RDBMS can keep with the load, which should be OK for quite a while because most of the operations are done in the memory using a stateful bean and only occasionally stored or retrieved from the DB and the amount of data is low too. A problematic part could be the dependency on the remote inventory system webservice but with good caching of its outputs in the application it should be OK too. Unfortunately I've only vague idea of the system resources (memory size, number and speed of CPUs/cores) that such an "average Java EE application" for few hundred users needs. My rough and mostly unfounded estimate based on actual Amazon offerings is that 1.7GB and a single, 2-core "modern CPU" with speed around 2.5GHz (the High-CPU Medium Instance) should be sufficient for any of the two application servers (since we can handle higher load by provisioning more of them). Alternatively I would consider using the Large instance (64b, 7.5GB RAM, 2 cores at 1GHz) So my question is whether such a deployment to the cloud is technically and financially feasible or whether dedicated/VPS servers would be a better option and whether there are some real-world experiences with something similar. • Calculation Expression Parser with Nesting and Variables in ActionScript

  Hi There, I'm trying to enable dynamic fields in the configuration file for my mapping app, but I can't figure out how to parse the "equation" passed in by the user, at least not without writing a whole parser from scratch! I'm sure there is some easier way to do this, and so I'm asking for ideas! Basic idea: public var testString:String = "(#TOTPOP_CY#-#HISPOP_CY#)/#TOTPOP_CY#"; public var valueObject:Object = {TOTPOP_CY:1000, HISPOP_CY:100}; public function calcParse(eq:String):String { // do calculations return calculatedValue } So far, I was thinking of splitting the expression by either the operators, or maybe the variable tokens, but that gets rid of the parenthetical nesting. Alternatively, use a series of regex to search and replace each piece of the expression with its value, recursively running until only a number is left. But I don't think regex does math (i.e. replace "\d + \d" with the sum of the two numbers) Ideally, I'd just do a find/replace all variable names with their values, then run an eval(), but there's no eval in AS... eesh I downloaded some course materials for a course on compiler design, so maybe I'll just write a full-fledged calculator language and parser and port it over from the OTHER flex (the parser generator) :-D
