    I was wondering if someone has observations (or specifications) of different mobile processors power consumption levels when idle? Let's define 'idle' with 'browsing web sites trough wifi, no flash, no multitasking'. There are different series processors, recognizable by their first letter. The letter tells about the maximum TDP. For example: T - 30-39W P - max 25W L - 12-19W U - <12W However this is about maximum consumptions during load. Is there any difference in power levels when the CPU is idling?

  • Password Cracking Windows Accounts

    At work we have laptops with encrypted harddrives. Most developers here (on occasion I have been guilty of it too) leave their laptops in hibernate mode when they take them home at night. Obviously, Windows (i.e. there is a program running in the background which does it for windows) must have a method to unencrypt the data on the drive, or it wouldn't be able to access it. That being said, I always thought that leaving a windows machine on in hibernate mode in a non-secure place (not at work on a lock) is a security threat, because someone could take the machine, leave it running, hack the windows accounts and use it to encrypt the data and steal the information. When I got to thinking about how I would go about breaking into the windows system without restarting it, I couldn't figure out if it was possible. I know it is possible to write a program to crack windows passwords once you have access to the appropriate file(s). But is it possible to execute a program from a locked Windows system that would do this? I don't know of a way to do it, but I am not a Windows expert. If so, is there a way to prevent it? I don't want to expose security vulnerabilities about how to do it, so I would ask that someone wouldn't post the necessary steps in details, but if someone could say something like "Yes, it's possible the USB drive allows arbitrary execution," that would be great! EDIT: The idea being with the encryption is that you can't reboot the system, because once you do, the disk encryption on the system requires a login before being able to start windows. With the machine being in hibernate, the system owner has already bypassed the encryption for the attacker, leaving windows as the only line of defense to protect the data.

  • Windows OS's cannot boot on new internal harddrive

    I have installed a new internal 500GB hard drive into a Dell Inspiron N4030 and it appears that the installation was entirely successful. The BIOS recognizes the drive and shows the serial number of the hard drive. The problem is that I cannot boot any Windows OS. I have tried XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. It displays only a black screen with a blinking cursor. Fedora boots successfully. My old hard drive crashed, but would atleast boot up these OS's before it died. Any help?

  • installing windows XP in Samsung SENS 145 plus notebook (no CD drive)

    Hi I was trying to install Windows XP in a Samsung SENS 145 plus Notebook. It does not have a cd drive and I already managed to format it and semi install Windows XP, so now it does not even boot up either. This is what I did: Since it supports USB booting, I first made a bootable USB of Windows XP (Korean version; SP2 I think, may be SP 3) using Novicorp WinToFlash enter link description here. It managed to boot up at first and I was able to format the C driveand get Windows install to start up. It took forever to copy all the files from the USB and after the first reboot, before installation started, I cancelled the reboot from windows install, went to BIOS and changed the boot device priority from USB to internal hard drive. But now on bootup it showed me a list with two options for booting windows XP (much like in the case of a multi OS system) so I assumed that I had formatted drive D by mistake and installed XP there, instead of on C drive. Anyway, I chose one of them and it continued my Windows installation. I got the blue installation screen that shows ads about Windows XP on the right frame and estimated remaining time on the left. However, after completing the process, after the first reboot, instead of showing the Windows XP logo, it says \system32\hall.dll is missing (or corrupted I'm not sure, I needed to install the Korean version of windows and I could not exactly read the error message, however it was one that I have already seen in an English version installation, and I am sure it says either missing or corrupted). The problem is, now it shows the same error again when I try to reboot it from the USB drive as well. I tried to boot a portable version of Linux I made in another USB, but the computer does not boot up from that USB, and it shows hal.dll error when I try to boot it using the WIN XP installation USB I made, as well as when I try to boot it from the hard drive, where I suppose Win XP is now semiinstalled. So now I can't get the computer to start up at all, except going to the BIOS. What else can I try to solve this? Also, would it be possible to install XP on this computer by connecting it to another one running Windows 7 ultimate, through the ethernet card? That is, network just the two computers together, then install windows XP on the notebook from the desktop running windows 7? Please help, I'm running out of ideas on this one. If Korean version of windows XP is the problem then I am willing to install English version as well. (but I need to make sure if that is the real cause of the problem)

  • The RTL8111/8168B NIC under Linux and the r8168 driver

    So I've got one of the infamous R8168 Realtek ethernet NIC, which have some problems under Linux. After some research, I found out I had to use the r8168 driver for this card (and not the r8169 which still loads when nothing else is available), which I did. So now everything works fine... Sort of. My download and upload rates are more than halved compared to what I should get. When I test (with eg. speedtest) I get something like 20M (often 15M) in download and 30M in upload, but if I test under Windows (everything is otherwise identical: same ethernet cable, same connection, at the same time of the day (well 5 min apart)...), I get 50M upload/download (which is what I expect).   • Windows 7 Not Starting and System Repair Not Loading

    I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running Windows 7 When turning on my PC I keep receiving a black screen with the option to use System Repair or Start Normally. Both options lead me to the System Repair background except no matter how long I wait the system restore options never show up. Choosing F8 and running all of the options including safe mode encounters the same result above. I tried to to use 2 system recovery disks 32x and 64x I downloaded and both lead to similiar results. When I choose System Repair running from the disk the System Repair Question asking to select a language pops ups but after this no matter how long I wait no other options appear. Next after restarting and selecting F8 (after hitting f12 and running from CD) I choose 'Run From Safe Mode with Command Prompt' I am able to run all of the options from System Restore with differing results: Startup Repair: Choosing this ends up in system repair indefinitely (left running 12 hrs) System Restore: Does Nothing. PC thinks for a second and then stops. When selecting ShutDown I see an error message stating there are no restore points. System Image Recovery: Service Cannot be started in Safe Mode Windows Memory Diagnostic: Runs test but then leads to system repair background which never loads system repair Command Prompt: chkdsk /r -Cannot Lock Current Drive...write protected. chkdsk /f -Cannot Lock Current Drive...write protected. bootcfg - Cannot open Boot.Ini file bootcfg - Ran all 3 (rebuildBcd, FixMbr and Fixboot) but PC still goes to System Repair background with no repair options popping up upon restart (without recovery CD). I'm on the verge of purchasing a boot utility disk for $50 unless there is anything else short of "take it to a computer shop" that somebody can suggest I try.

  • Replacing notebook SATA hard disk with SSD without reinstalling

    So there's a notebook (Lenovo Thinkpad Z61m) with a SATA hard disk, the SATA controller is configured for native AHCI operation & the OS is Windows XP. The hard disk is going to be replaced with an SSD which is larger. I have an idea of how I'm going to do this, but I want to be sure there isn't something obvious I'm missing. Connect external USB drive Boot some flavour of Linux live CD Use dd to clone the SATA disk to the external drive Power off and replace the SATA disk with the SSD Boot the live CD Use dd to clone back from the external drive to the SSD Does anyone have anything to add?

  • Fan Error on Lenovo R61

    Problem Since the last two days, my Lenovo R61 is giving me a "Fan Error" message during boot, after showing which, it powers down. It does so for 3-4 boot attempts, and after a bit of tapping and such human treatment, in the 6th or so attempt, it luckily starts. Question Why is this happening ? How do I fix it ?     I have just purchased a new HP dv7t-7000 and I would like to run Windows 7 / Ubuntu. How do I setup the dual boot? Can I install both operating systems with an 8gb USB drive? Can I still make use of the 32gb SSD? I'm unfamiliar with the efficacy of using an SSD for caching with a 750gb 7200rpm sata 3 drive. I can only see using it for windows 7 - which I have installed in order to play games. Thank you!

    I have a Lenovo X61 Tablet computer, with a plain SATA drive inside. I have windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting on the computer. I want to back up both of these OS's, and their special partitions (Windows 7 has one, and of course the Linux Swap). I want a one-to-one backup, all of my mission critical data is already backed up, but I would like to get a snapshot, and store it on a larger file server at home for quick recovery.     I am having a hard disk in gpt partition style and Windows 8 is pre-installed in uefi mode. While trying to dual boot using usb bootable disk(using rufus,gpt partition style,fat32),it displays "Windows is loading files", then while displaying "Starting Windows" it hangs. So, I tried to install it inside Windows using setup.exe. Everything was running fine, but when it gets self restarted again, it got stuck at "Starting Windows". When restarted in Windows 8, it showed a htm file stating that "Windows cannot be installed on a computer using battery power. If the battery runs out of power during the installation, you might lose data. To continue the installation, plug in the computer's power adapter." I am sure that power adapter is connected. I Googled a lot on this, but I didn't get solution.

  • Multiple mouse settings on laptop?

    I'm wondering if this is possible. I use a macbook, running windows 7...when I don't have an external mouse connected, I leave the left/right settings of the buttons to the default. But when I plug in a mouse, I change that setting (since I use the mouse left-handed). When I unplug the mouse, I would like it to revert to the "unplugged" setting. Is there a way to get windows to remember mouse settings based on which device it's using?

    I got a new screen for a Dell Inspiron 1545. The old screen says Dell Inspiron 1545 LP156WH1 (TL)(C1?) HD and the new one says Dell Inspiron 1545 LP156WH1 (TL)(C1?) LCD Does that make a difference? All I can get to work on the new screen is the backlight. The old screen had a crack. Now when I plug the old one in, it will not turn on at all. Could I have blown the inverter or messed up the cable?

  • Overheating Toshiba Satellite L300

    A coleague of mine's having trouble with his new Toshiba Satellite L300 ... I tool a kook at it, and indeed it's hot as hell. I couldn't hold my hand on it for too long. He says it also has a tendency to turn itself off (WinXP 32bit running) with no forewarning. Hasn't happened to me while I was using it, but that wasn't long anyways. The first guess was it was too dirty ... problem is it's new, came out of a package a quarter of a year ago. Kept in a clean environment (office). Looks clean. No dust in sight. Second guess is that the fan wasn't working properly, cause indeed it has intervals of working, and non working. But when I listen to it, it sounds like normal usage. I took a SpeedFan measurement, and it reports temp. up to 85 Celsius ... which is definitely too high. Anyone knows what else I could do to it ? It is under warranty and it will go to the service, but I thought if there is something we can do, as to avoid carrying it there / be without it for a week ...

  • Toshiba monitor not displaying anything

    Alright, so I agreed to fix a friends computer, thinking it was a software problem, not hardware. I was going to use an XP disc and valid code to swap her from Vista to XP, as apparently Vista had some driver issues. I found out, however, that the real problem was her heat sink was completely clogged, causing the computer to overheat and shut down. So, I took the computer apart and cleaned the heat sink. However, after putting it all back together, and turning it on, nothing at all shows up. I plugged in an external monitor, and nothing shows up on that either. I have double, triple, decuply checked all the connections and everything appears to be plugged in, attached, and in the right place. I am out of ideas. So, my question is, does anyone have any clue what is going on, and have suggestions I could try?
