• VS 2008 "Choose Data Source" wizard

  Good Day, I'm using Visual Studio Professional 2008 SP 1. When I create a connection via the designer, the "Choose Data Source" dialog only lists the following data sources: Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5 Microsoft SQL Server Database File When I create a connection on the Server explorer the list is complete with : Microsoft SQL Server Compact 3.5, Microsoft SQL Server Database File, Microsoft SQL Server Compact, ODBC etc. Please help me out. I need to use SQL Server Compact. • C# sending mails with images inline using SmtpClient

  SmtpClient() allows you to add attachments to your mails, but what if you wanna make an image appear when the mail opens, instead of attaching it? As I remember, it can be done with about 4 lines of code, but I don't remember how and I can't find it on the MSDN site. EDIT: I'm not using a website or anything, not even an IP address. The image(s) are located on a harddrive. When sent, they should be part of the mail. So, I guess I might wanna use an tag... but I'm not too sure, since my computer isn't broadcasting.

  Hello, I want to create a new customevent log ( "My EeventLog") on a remote machine. createEventSource(String,String,String) method was perferct for my need. Unfortenatly, this method is Obsolete. My questions is: the two other alternatives don't allow evenlog creation over a remote machine (correct me if I'm wrong). http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.diagnostics.eventlog.createeventsource.aspx So, my easiest way to do it- is be created a new exe and run it remotely with Psexe. right? • Not able to include ntifs.h in win32 project

  I tried to use the function called NTCreateFile. When I compiled it gave me an error saying "_NTCreateFile identifier not found". I inlcuded the header winternl.h. So next I tried to use ZwCreatFile, as per MSDN I included ntifs.h, but I am not able to include that header. It says "not able to open/find the directory". I am using V@2008. What is the problem? Am I missing anything?

• SetWindowLongPtr with DialogBoxParam?

  Hey all- A while back I was writing a C++ program with the Win32 API that would display a dialog box and then listen to the messages it generated. At one point, I was interested in associating a piece of data with the dialog window. Were I manually creating the window and attaching a window proc, I'd just use SetWindowLongPtr to set the GWLP_USERDATA field to a pointer to the data to associate. However, in this case I was creating and displaying the window with DialogBoxParam, and it wasn't clear whether this function was associating that data with its own internal state. Since the MSDN didn't have a description of what would happen in this case, I ended up using some other approach to solve the problem. My question is this - is it safe to use SetWindowLongPtr to overwrite the GWLP_USERDATA value in a window created by DialogBoxParam? Thanks!

• Forms Authentication Across Applications Stopped Working

  Hi, I have a .net 1.1 ASP application (domain.com) which has a .net 2 virtual directory (domain.com/v2) beneath it, both applications run within their own app pool on the same machine running IIS 6. The web.config files for both apps are setup for Forms Authentication as described here - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/eb0zx8fc(v=VS.80).aspx. Users would be directed to the domain.com/v2/login.aspx page which would authenticate for both applications, this configuration has been working fine for the last few years until installing one of the recent Windows 2003 security updates today. Now after authenticating under /v2 users keep getting redirected back to domain.com/v2/Login.aspx as domain.com doesnt see them as authenticated anymore. Any ideas as to which security update would have caused this and if its possible to rollback? I've looked at a few suggestions on this (e.g. Cross app on subdomain form authentication not working) and other sites but no luck so far Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

• Setting minimum threads in thread pool

  I have an application with 4 worker threads from the thread pool. It was waking up every 0.5 second. as written in msdn the thread pool monitors every 0,5 second to create idle threads. I set the nuber of minimum threads to 4 and it solved the problem - no more background activity all the time. My question is - I have another applicatiopn which has the same number of threads threads-4, but here setting min thread to 4 doesn't help but when setting min thread to 5 then the background monitoring stops. What might be the difference between 2 application with the same number of threads from the thread pool- 4 threads.On one setting min threads to 4 helps and the other only setting min threads to 5 helps?

  First of all, I don't think this question is a duplicate of http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2208828/detect-64bit-os-windows-in-python because imho it has not been thoroughly answered. The only approaching answer is: Use sys.getwindowsversion() or the existence of PROGRAMFILES(X86) (if 'PROGRAMFILES(X86)' in os.environ) But: Can we completely rely on the windows environment variable PROGRAMFILES(X86)? I fear that anyone can create it, even if it's not present on the system. How can we use sys.getwindowsversion() to get the architecture? Regarding sys.getwindowsversion(): The link http://docs.python.org/library/sys.html#sys.getwindowsversion leads us to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms724451%28VS.85%29.aspx but I don't see anything related to the architecture (32bit/64bit). Moreover, the platform element if the returned tuple seems to be independent of the architecture. One last note, I'm using python 2.5. Thanks!

  Hi all I wrote a control, and use a tool to do the code analysis. There is a test that I didn't pass. Avoid excessive locals, http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/ms182263(VS.90).aspx. In my CreateChildControls function, I built a big table with lots of field. I need to create a lot of TableRow and TableCell to construct the table. But these are not field or property of control. Thery are local variables in the function, which are created dynamically. Should I make these TableCells and TableRows as fields of the control? Or I just keep them as the local variables in the CreateChildControl function? Best Regards,

  I am currently crossing the jungle of SQL Server scale-out technologies like replication, log-shipping, mirroring... I have the following constraints on my choice: I want the read-only load to be spread accross the primary and the secondary (mirror, subscriber) server Write load can be sent directly to the primary server The solution should be nearly maintainance free. Schema changes should just replicate to the secondary server (attention: replication has some serious constraints here as it seems) Written data should be accessible very quickly (in under 1s, but better would be instantaneously) on the secondary server On server failure I can tollerate up to one hour of data loss easily.   The situation: I need to create about 40+ solutions that all reference 3 projects and have one project that is unique to each one. I'd like to create a multi-project template that does this, but from what I've read it looks like it's very difficult or impossible (related SO question, but doesn't answer). • What is the point declaring variables at the end of class?

  I saw multiple examples in MSDN that uses to declare the internal fields at the end of the class. What is the point? I find this a little embarrassing, because each time Visual Studio adds a method it adds it to the end of the class, so there is need every time to move it... class A { public A(){} // Methods, Properties, etc ... private string name; } class A { private string name; public A(){} // Methods, Properties, etc ... }

• capture the last WM_SIZE

  When I resize my window I want to tell another part of my program that my window has changed size. I read on MSDN that: WM SIZE Message The WM SIZE message is sent to a window after its size has changed. However, I receive the WM_SIZE even when dragging. I noticed that there is also a WM_SIZING message that is sent when my window is resizing. At the moment I do not see the difference between WM_SIZE and WM_SIZING. Is there some way I can capture the very last WM_SIZE message, as to not "spam" my program with resize messages?

• C# Generics Multiple Inheritance Problem

  Can any one help me with this syntax issue with C#? I have no idea how to do it. class SomeClass<T> : SomeOtherClass<T> where T : ISomeInterface , IAnotherInterface { ... } I want SomeClass to inherit from SomeOtherClass and IAnotherInterface and for T to inherit ISomeInterface only It seems the problem is that the where keyword screws everything up so that the compiler thinks both ISomeInterface and IAnotherInterface should both be inherited by T. This problem is very annoying and I think the solution is some kind of parenthesis but I have tried and failed finding one that works. Also, switching around the order of the two items inherited from SomeClass does not work because the class inherited always has to come before any interfaces. I couldn't find any solutions on the MSDN C# generics pages and I can't beleive I'm the first person to have this problem. Thanks, any help is much appreciated!

  I am following this article on creating persistent login cookies with my ASP.NET site: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.security.formsauthentication.encrypt.aspx The issue is that when I navigate to the page, I get the following compiler error: Compiler Error Message: CS1061: 'ASP.administration_login_aspx' does not contain a definition for 'Login_Click' and no extension method 'Login_Click' accepting a first argument of type 'ASP.administration_login_aspx' could be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Can anyone tell me why this is. The error message doesn't really say much and I don't believe I am missing a directive or assembly reference. The code builds without any problems. EDIT: I did not include code because I said I was following that link which includes code. I copy/pasted from the example.

  The project is hosted on a tfs server and I need to access the build number which I assume is automatically generated when ever you build a project. I need to retrieve that build number and display it on the web pages so that QAs and testing people know exactly which build they are working on. I am looking for some kind of post deployment task which can access the build number or may be generate one and probably write it down to a file, from where I can read it. This is my understanding: Control.Invoke(delegated_method) // Executes on the thread wich the control was created on witch holds its handle ,typically this would be the main thread of a winform application . Control.BeginInvoke(delegated_method // Executes asynchronously on a threadPool Thread . According to MSDN, it says Executes a delegate asynchronously on the thread that the control's underlying handle was created on. My QUESTION : Am I to understand that beginInvoke treats the main thread in this matter as it would the thread pool, and execute the delegated method on the main thread when it "gets a chance" ? Another question which is raised, is it possible to create a control not on the main thread ? if so could someone give me an example?

  I set the datepicker ShowUpDown to true. I notice that every time it reaches JANUARY of the following year it is throwing an error. Year, Month, and Day parameters describe an un-representable DateTime. reading on MSDN, it says that month should be between 1 and 12. So my guess is after the month of December, which is 12, when a user increase it again it will become 13, hence, throwing an error. Is is possible to loop this? From December(12) to January(1) instead of increasing it to 13.

  MSDN article, Enabling and Disabling Privileges in C++, provided the a code example to show how to enable or disable a privilege in an access token. I quote the part in questioned: tp.PrivilegeCount = 1; tp.Privileges[0].Luid = luid; if (bEnablePrivilege) tp.Privileges[0].Attributes = SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED; else tp.Privileges[0].Attributes = 0; What is the meaning of zero value for Attributes member? According to the documentation of TOKEN_PRIVILEGES structure, the attributes of a privilege can be a combination of the following values: SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED  (it is 0x00000002L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED_BY_DEFAULT  (it is 0x00000001L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_REMOVED  (it is 0x00000004L in WinNT.h) SE_PRIVILEGE_USED_FOR_ACCESS  (it is 0x80000000L in WinNT.h) So, we don't see any valid constant with a value of zero. I guess, the zero is equal to SE_PRIVILEGE_REMOVED. Anybody here could explain what the zero value really does?

  I have a file on a Windows 2003 NTFS file system. It is called C:\MyFolder\MyFile.txt. First grant a user read access to the file. Then I remove the user's read access to the parent folder. Now the user cannot use Windows Explorer to browse the folder and double click to open in Notepad. The user can go to Start (menu) Run and enter "C:\MyFolder\MyFile.txt" and the file will load in Notepad. Can someone point me to some MSDN documentation that explains why this is? I've tried all the google and bing queries I can think of. thanks much

• Setting language/culture for reporting services report rendered through C#

  I have written a report renderer in C# that runs and attaches reports to an email. This is all working great, except the date format of the parameters are incorrect when listed in the report title. All the reports have their language set to =User!Language and the parameters are output using the FormatDateTime function to format according to the user's regional settings. I am basically using the rendering method described here on MSDN. This all works great when the reports are run through the browser. However, when I render the report from C# it uses en-US date format. The report server's regional settings are set appropriately to the correct region as are the regional settings of the computer the C# progam is running on.. What property do I need to set in my C# program for the report to be rendered using my appropriate language/culture?

• Unable to set maxReceivedMessageSize through web.config

  Hello there, I have now investigated the 400 - BadRequest code for the last two hours. A lot of sugestions goes towards ensuring the bindingConfiguration attribute is set correctly, and in my case, it is. Now, I need YOUR help before destroying the building i am in :-) I run a WCF RestFull service (very lightweight, using this resource for inspiration: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd315413.aspx) which (for now) accepts an XmlElement (POX) provided through the POST verb. I am currently ONLY using Fiddler's request builder before implementing a true client (as this is mixed environments). When I do this for XML smaller than 65K, it works fine - larger, it throws this exception: The maximum message size quota for incoming messages (65536) has been exceeded. To increase the quota, use the MaxReceivedMessageSize property on the appropriate binding element.
