• Outlook 2007 - Monospace/preformatted quickstyle

  In Outlook 2003 I could set a block of text as preformatted, which was mighty handing for emailing code snippets. This prevented line wrapping, and specified that a monospace font be used in whatever email client recieved my email. Now in Outlook 2007, there are at least three problems: 'Plain Text' style (apparently the closest thing to 'preformatted' as a style) is buried beneath about five clicks, and adding it to the quick style gallery and saving the gallery seems to be forgotten (bug?) It uses some fancy Microsoft font 'Consolas' that is not on some of my coworkers machines that use thunderbird It does not appear that there is any way to get it flagged as a monospace font so that other email clients will display it properly. Does anybody know how to quickly set text to 'preformatted' as Outlook 2003, meaning A) use a monospace font B) flag it as monospace for other clients C) avoid hard line breaks?

• Overcrowded Windows XP Folders

  I know that, technically, an individual Windows XP directory can hold an immense number of files (over 4.29 billion, according to a quick Google search). However, is there a practical ceiling where too many files in one directory starts having an impact on reads to those files? If so, what factors would exacerbate or help the issue? I ask because my employer has several hundred XP machines in the field at client sites, and the performance on some of the older ones is getting "sludgy." The machines download and display client-defined images, and my supervisor and I suspect that our slacktastic approach to cache management could be to blame. (Some of the directories have tens of thousands of images in them.) I'm trying to gather evidence to support or contest the theory before spending time on a coding fix.

• Dump output from REPL

  I'm writing SML programs, and I'd like a way to quickly see the output from running a program in the REPL without actually running the REPL (to quickly see if a program has syntax errors - I plan to use this as a make program for .sml files in vim to view the output inside vim).. Currently, I have this: sml file.sml | echo -e "\004" So it runs the program, and then echoes Ctrl-D to exit the REPL. The problem is that its too quick to send the Ctrl-D key, so there is no output. I tried this too: sml file.sml | sleep 2 ; echo -e "\004" But that isn't doing it either. Any ideas on how I can get a dump of the output from the REPL?

• Suspended Laptop Cannot Wake Up - Ubuntu

  I've got an ASUS G73JH, and whenever I suspend it or hibernate it, it will not wake up. The screen stays backlight but is black. I can't: Awaken it with the keyboard Awaken it with the mouse Soft power-off by pressing the power button I have to hold down the power button and shut it down that way, and this seems a little unreasonable. Is there a place I could look for more detail as to what's causing this? Is there a known quick-fix to this issue?

• MySQL Stored Procedure Parameters are NULL

  I am stumped, and was hoping someone here would have a quick and easy answer. I did a fresh install of MySQL 5.5 and am trying to pass parameters into a stored procedure. The parameter values aren't being read by the stored procedure. MySQL doesn't throw an error and processes the code with null parameters. Here is the code: DELIMITER $$ CREATE DEFINER=`root`@`%` PROCEDURE `testing`(IN parameter INTEGER) BEGIN UPDATE table_name SET valueToChange = 'Test' WHERE mainID = @parameter; END And here is the query I'm using to call it: USE database_name; CALL testing(72); Can anyone help?

• Can't access a partion that has a virus on it

  My wife's computer had a virus alarm go off, so I am looking into it. The virus is supposed to be on the D: drive. I wanted to talk a quick look at the file, but I cannot not. It has one file that I can get to. It is D:\Recovery. That shows a "Protected by PC Angel" graphic. How can I get past this? Should I do it? Is the virus scanner wrong? (I am using Avast).

• Getting packets from one port to another on a Dell PowerConnect 2824 switch

  I have a dell PowerConnect 2824 and I have a cat 5 cable connected from port 1 to port 23. Port 1 is reserved for VLAN 1 (the only VLAN that can manage the switch) and port 18-23 belong to VLAN 112. I currently have the switch setup with ip 10.71.3.5/27 and a test machine plugged into port 22 with IP address 10.71.3.30/27. For some reason I can not ping 10.71.3.5 from my test machine (10.71.3.30). Note: When I try to ping the server plugged into port 21 (IP: 10.71.3.7/27) also VLAN 112, I get responses just fine. Note: When I plug my test machine directly into port 1, I can ping 10.71.3.5 just fine. • Question about Domain Forwarding [beginner]

  Hello folks Just a quick beginner's question here. I have a webapp located at domainxyz.com, and it generates short URLs for long posts automatically - so rather than visit domainxyz.com/reallylongpostnamehere I can just type domainxyz.com/a5c and be taken there automatically. However, I've bought a shorter domain name - short.com - and I want to be able to visit short.com/a5c and be redirected (or forwarded) to domainxyz.com/a5c. Or short.com/7f0 -- domainxyz.com/7f0. This way, although it seems a tad illogical it saves me setting up another hosting account on short.com to deal with the URL shortening. Is this possible? I realise you can forward domains, but, can you forward domains AND forward the URL segments? Thanks! Jack

• Can a faulty DNS record prevent networking?

  My server's network interfaces are not available anymore since yesterday evening. I didn't change anything, but I added a new DNS-record shortly before. Unfortunately, the web interface I used to add this DNS record escaped some characters, so I've got a faulty DNS record: example.com 86400 IN TXT "\"v=spf1 mx a -all\"" However, this is the only unusual thing I could notice about this. Is it possible that the \-characters in my DNS record are confusing for some routers? Or could it be the system itself which is confused by this (it's a Debian Lenny system). Unfortunately, I can't quick-test it because of the long TTL of the record.

• How do I download photos tagged of me from Facebook?

  I want to be able to download (and back up) photos tagged of me in Facebook. I'm specifically not interested in my own photo albums - I uploaded them and therefore have them already in better quality than FB. What I want are the photos other have uploaded that have me in them. I have a couple of hundred of these now, and don't much fancy three hours of right-click save-as... There seem to be a couple of utilities that pop up with a quick search, but (call me paranoid) I'm wary about giving some random freeware app my login and password. Social safe looked promising, but as it doesn't support this feature at the moment it's kinda pointless. Can anyone recommend one that they've actually used? I'd consider an open source one - I'm a programmer and don't mind digging through to check that it doesn't do anything nasty.

• Threads, Sockets, and Designing Low-Latency, High Concurrency Servers

  I've been thinking a lot lately about low-latency, high concurrency servers. Specifically, http servers. http servers (fast ones, anyway) can serve thousands of users simultaneously, with very little latency. So how do they do it? As near as I can tell, they all use events. Cherokee and Lighttpd use libevent. Nginx uses it's own event library performing much the same function of libevent, that is, picking a platform optimal strategy for polling events (like kqueue on *bsd, epoll on linux, /dev/poll on Solaris, etc). They all also seem to employ a strategy of multiprocess or multithread once the connection is made - using worker threads to handle the more cpu intensive tasks while another thread continues to listen and handle connections (via events). This is the extent of my understanding and ability to grok the thousand line sources of these applications. What I really want are finer details about how this all works. In examples of using events I've seen (and written) the events are handling both input and output. To this end, do the workers employ some sort of input/output queue to the event handling thread? Or are these worker threads handling their own input and output? I imagine a fixed amount of worker threads are spawned, and connections are lined up and served on demand, but how does the event thread feed these connections to the workers? I've read about FIFO queues and circular buffers, but I've yet to see any implementations to work from. Are there any? Do any use compare-and-swap instructions to avoid locking or is locking less detrimental to event polling than I think? Or have I misread the design entirely? Ultimately, I'd like to take enough away to improve some of my own event-driven network services. Bonus points to anyone providing solid implementation details (especially for stuff like low-latency queues) in C, as that's the language my network services are written in.

• "Work stealing" vs. "Work shrugging"?

  Why is it that I can find lots of information on "work stealing" and nothing on "work shrugging" as a dynamic load-balancing strategy? By "work-shrugging" I mean busy processors pushing excessive work towards less loaded neighbours rather than idle processors pulling work from busy neighbours ("work-stealing"). I think the general scalability should be the same for both strategies. However I believe that it is much more efficient for busy processors to wake idle processors if and when there is definitely work for them to do than having idle processors spinning or waking periodically to speculatively poll all neighbours for possible work. Anyway a quick google didn't show up anything under the heading of "Work Shrugging" or similar so any pointers to prior-art and the jargon for this strategy would be welcome. Clarification/Confession In more detail:- By "Work Shrugging" I actually envisage the work submitting processor (which may or may not be the target processor) being responsible for looking around the immediate locality of the preferred target processor (based on data/code locality) to decide if a near neighbour should be given the new work instead because they don't have as much work to do. I am talking about an atomic read of the immediate (typically 2 to 4) neighbours' estimated q length here. I do not think this is any more coupling than implied by the thieves polling & stealing from their neighbours - just much less often - or rather - only when it makes economic sense to do so. (I am assuming "lock-free, almost wait-free" queue structures in both strategies). Thanks.

• Weird problem, special characters coming after formatting the hard drive, computer isn't starting 0_

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting (quick format) and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came. • Web-based game in Python + Django and client browser polling

  I am creating a text-based game that implements a basic model in which multiple (10+) players interact with data and one moderator watches them and sets certain environmental statistics that affect gameplay. Recently I have begun to familiarize myself with Django. It seems to me that it would be an excellent tool for creating a game quickly, particularly because the nature of my game depends largely on sets of data (which lends itself quite well to a database). I am wondering how to "push" changes made by the game moderator to the players (for example, the moderator can decide to display an image to all players). The game is turn-based, not real-time, but certain messages need to be pushed out in roughly real-time. My thoughts: I could have each player's browser poll a status periodically (say, every 30 seconds) to see if there is a message from a moderator. But this forces a lag and means different players might receive it at different times. And reducing this interval to <10 seems like a bad idea for the server. Is there a better way to inform clients of changes? Would you suggest something other than using a web framework like Django? Thanks!

• Making a non-trivial Image and Video Gallery with a really nice interface

  Short part: I'm starting to build an Image and Video Gallery for our intranet. It's pretty much like an image gallery with video thumbnails that play on click. It's just good to keep that in mind because caching and streaming happen in very different ways there. It will serve to browse our reference database, which will also contain searching, tagging and voting. There are 3 features that I need to begin with: Quick preview of thumbnails from each Gallery Fast zoom in / out Animated scrolling Now to the long part, since I can't seem to reduce this: I hope this question belongs here. Maybe people can read this through and identify with it, specially since I expect answers to be pretty specific. The first plan was getting Apple's mobile me gallery as base, because it just so happens to have all those 3 features. If you've never seem it, you should check it out. Move the mouse over each collection and you'll get a nice preview "per pixel". Carousel got a really good scrolling, not just because of the pretty effect. I like it much more than cooliris, but it would be nice to have it in several rows, maybe without the magnifying effect... Then it could be all in the same place with the zoom. The more the features blend-in together, the better. Zooming out with the mouse, scrolling by dragging, once the zoom is really out it becomes a browsing through galleries, with the quick-show preview of each, all properly cached and fast. That'd be perfect. A very compelling interface will be important in this project. Well, my point here is just describing what I need and hope to hear from people with more experience in all that stuff of what's already done and what I'd have to do myself. And how (i.e. which framework to use) to do it. To begin with, I've found a gallery demo and its source code (I think it was from here, but the link seems broken now). I guess it was made in SproutCore, which is what mobileme was based upon. Definitely with JQuery (which already seems a little slow). But I'm still missing two features there: the carousel and the fast zoom (it's just not as slow as the zoom in this demo with cappuccino). Then I've found a supposedly better one with a pretty good and similar zoom, that I'm not sure if it's using any framework and is already in php. Right now it'd be better having just the HTML, no server-side, since I'm building interface first. So, can anyone point directions? There are way too many options! Should I look for another solution closer to what I need, or try and tweak this one? I'm not familiar with any framework at all. Sorry for bringing this question that I will have to answer myself anyway sooner or later and sorry that I couldn't make this smaller. Thanks.

• Can I connect Creative SBS A520 5.1 speakers to my Dell XPS L502X?

  I am planning on buying a new set of speakers and was looking at the Creative SBS A520 5.1 Speakers as an option to connect to my Dell XPS 502X. From what I have seen online and on the quick start guide for the speakers, I need to have 3 line out ports on my laptop to use the 5.1 speakers properly. Right now, I have port for 3.5mm jack, one S/P Diff and another for the mic. Can I connect these speakers directly to my laptop without using any other hardware? If I do need some other hardware, what do I need to get?

• Any "Magic Tricks" For Getting Data Back After Windows 7 Install

  My old man installed Windows 7 without making a proper backup, and now realizes he left behind some important data. He did a true "clean install", so there is no Windows.old folder in the root directory. However, I believe the format performed on the hard drive was only a quick format, so I am hoping there is some chance at data recovery. I took his hard drive out, and have spent a majority of the weekend researching data recovery options. I paid $70 for the GetDataBack software, but have had little success with it. I can see all of the files I want to restore, however they appear corrupt when I try to open them. With that all being said, does anyone know of a viable way to recover some of this data, or is it a lost cause all together?

• Is there a java library / package analogous to <stdio.h>?

  I have been doing Java on and off for about 14 years, and almost nothing else the last 6 years or so. I really hate the java.io package -- its legion of subclasses and adapters. I do like exceptions, rather than having to always poll "errno" and the like, but I could surely live without declared exceptions. Is there anything that functions like the Unix/ANSI stdio.h routines in C? I know we will never be rid of java.io and its conventions until java itself is retired, as they have metastasized throughout the many frameworks that have accreted to java. That said, I would like something that works kind of like this (let's call it package javax.stdio): Have a main utility class, perhaps FileStar, that can read and write files (or pipes), either text or binary, either sequentially or random access, with constructors that mimic fopen() and popen(). This class should have a load of useful methods that do things like fread(), fwrite(), fgets(), fputs(), fseek(), and whatever else (fprintf()?). Methods that are incompatible with the open/construct mode simply throw up (just like some of the collections classes/methods do when restricted). Then, have a bunch of interfaces that suggest how you intend to use the stream once you have created it: Sequential, RandomAccess, ReadOnly, WriteOnly, Text, Binary, plus combinations of these that make sense. Perhaps even have methods to return the appropriate type-cast (interface), throwing up if you have asked for something incompatible. For extra flavor, skip the declared exceptions -- e.g. - javax.stdio.IOException extends RuntimeException. Is there an open source project like this floating around?

  Hi, I finished developing a program and would like to sell it online. However, I am not really sure of what to do next. Here is my current plan (in-order): 1- Add a 'deployment' project (i'm using visual studio) to my project so I can create a setup file for my program. 2- Use visual studio 'testing' add ons to test the program. I have no idea how to do it, but will teach myself. 3- When all is done, install the program on my wife's, parents and in-laws computer to further test it under different environments. 3- Setup a small Ltd. company. ( I might start this earlier as it might take a few weeks to complete). 4- Build / finish building a website (actually I started on this step a few weeks ago but haven't devoted enough time for it to complete yet). 5- Find a software / service to protect my program from piracy. I know it is impossible to protect the program from piracy. I understand that fully. But I still want to implement some sort of solution that wouldn't harm or deter honest customers. 6- Set up a business paypal account. 7- Find a software / service to handle payments on my website 8- Find a software / service to handle issuing license codes 9- Set up all of the above and go 'live'. However, I have zero experience in this sort of thing and would like your guidance on some points. 1- Is it necessary to setup a company? Can I sell as an individual? Will selling as an individual deter persons or companies from buying my software? 2- What is a decent choice for as a software / service to protect my program from my piracy. I have done a quick search and found something called Quick License Manager by Interactive Studios. Is this the sort of thing I am looking for? Is it any good? At which stage do I use or implement their service (or any similar service you might point me too? I guess I am really asking: how does this work? Would they give me a file I just add to my project, rebuild it and that's it? 3- What should I implement to handle payments online and how complicated is it? could you point me to any such services, please? 4- What should I implement to handle issuing license codes and how will that software / service coordinate with the software / service that handles the anti-piracy stuff? could you point me to such services, please? 5- In a different Stack Overflow question (by another user) someone suggested a cms system called Software Droid (http://www.softwaredroid.com). Is this what I am after. Will it help? 6- If the steps i'm following are incorrect in order or logic could you please advise me on what I should actually do? • How can I shrink the Address toolbar in the Task Bar?

  I like being able to run commands straight from my Task Bar. So, I've enabled the Address toolbar on my new Windows 7 system - just like I had on my old XP system. However, the bar seems to have a mandatory minimum length that's a bit longer than I'd prefer. It's about twice as long, if memory serves, as the minimum size allowed in XP. Is there any way I can adjust this minimum length, through a Registry key or some other means? (Note: I've also got a related question, about removing the Refresh button at the end of the bar.) EDIT: For clarity, I'm adding a screenshot. The toolbar I want to shorten is the one circled below, with an empty text-entry field that has a drop-down and "Refresh" button. I currently have it positioned between a Quick Launch toolbar and the Taskbar. On the far side of the Taskbar, before the System Tray, is a Desktop toolbar.

How do I do this under Vista? I seem to remember from an old laptop using a Windows command-line command that would restart the wireless networking card device when it crashed. Is there something like that for video drivers? Background/Reason Because people rightfully ask why? - This is part of a larger problem which I'm waiting for resolution on from the manufacturer. In the meantime I'm looking for the above quick fix. Actually my video card often crashes my laptop when attaching an external monitor and trying to detect or use it. No solution from vendor yet and latest drivers do the same irksome behaviour. Windows says: A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

• Windows 7 won't restart with SSD

  I have this annoying problem that I just can't seem to fix. Recently I upgraded my main boot drive to an OCZ Vertex Turbo (60GB) which is an SSD. I've installed Windows 7 64bit. The drive works, and is really quick... blah blah blah. My problem is when I do a restart, for example click start, then arrow next to shutdown, and restart. The computer will shut down, and do a warm reboot, but it gets stuck where it says loading Windows. Just before the animation starts. So what I have to do is physically press the reset switch on the computer, then it restarts, firing up a menu which offers to launch Windows Startup Repair, so I select "Start Windows Normally". After this I boot in normally, but its damn annoying. Any ideas why this is happening, what I can do to fix it?

  I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list. • .htaccess configuration issue

  Hi, i am using two website on one domain like: www.example.com & www.example.com/site2, i want to know that on my site2, in my site2 their are 2 folders name folder1 and folder2 my index.php is in folder2 but the defination of methods defined in folder2 i am including the files through .htaccess but i am unable to get those files which are in folder1 and getting Error-500 and 400 on browser and i am using following lines but they are not working in .htaccess file The line below works fine RedirectMatch ^/$ http://www.example.com.pk/site2/views/ AllowOverride All php_value include_path ".:/home/example/public_html/site2/system" waiting for your quick response.
