  • Weird vps server issue

    I have an unmanaged linux vps Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot). I have LNMP installed. Also php-fpm php-apc, varnish, memcache. I have (or rather had) several live sites on it. under normal load the server uses ~700 mb memory. But since last night its using only 20mb~ memory and a lot of the services seems to be down (according to htop) I only see nginx working and mysql starts up and goes does every few minutes on a loop. Two options available: In Source inserts a SuppressMessage attribute in the source file above the method that generated the warning. This makes the suppression more discoverable.     i noticed that Firefox, unlike Chrome and Internet Explorer, doesn't run in the Low Mandatory Level (aka Protected Mode, Low Integrity) Google Chrome: Microsoft Internet Explorer: Mozilla Firefox: Following Microsoft's instructions, i can manually force Firefox into Low Integrity Mode by using: icacls firefox.exe /setintegritylevel Low But Firefox doesn't react well to not running with enough rights: i like the security of knowing that my browser is running with less rights than i have. Is there a way to run Firefox into low rights mode? Is Mozilla planning on adding "protected mode" sometime? Has someone found a workaround to Firefox not handling low rights mode? Update From a July 2007 interview with Mike Schroepfer, VP of Engineering at the Mozilla Foundation: ...we also believe in defense in depth and are investigating protected mode along with many other techniques to improve security for future releases.   • How safe is it to run CHKDSK on an SSD?

    I recently saw Windows 7 pop up a warning or two that I should run chkdsk on my laptop. My laptop came with an SSD and I'm not sure if there are any negative implications to running chkdsk on such a drive. Are there any potential issues with reporting "bad sectors" on the drive? I would imagine that the physical concept of sectors is completely different between a platter and a microchip. I don't think my SSD supports TRIM. It's about 14 months old and a quick web search seems to hint that it doesn't (though it's nearly impossible to find out this info for sure!). I'm also not sure if TRIM is even relevant here since there shouldn't be much in the way of deletes. So, how safe is it to run chkdsk on my SSD drive? The model of SSD that I have is reported as "Samsung SSD PB22-JS3 2.5".

    I need a Linux distro that will give me the following: Run on a Raspberry Pi Can reliably survive power loss (like via a read-only filesystem) I've been able to hunt down some documentation on how to change a regular Linux distro over to read-only mode. I was hoping that there would be a distro already built that was designed to run in an embedded environment. I don't need many packages or drivers, just enough to have the Pi working with USB/Ethernet. I don't need any GUI interface or anything, this will just be running a custom service built in C. Does anyone know of a distro that would fit?

    I have a Korg Nanokey, and I'd like to make it produce sound in ubuntu. I've read that means I should be using Rosegarden, and that Rosegarden uses JACK, but does not install it. (Although checking out Ubuntu Software Center, apparently some components of JACK are installed by default?) I understand there can be a lot of work setting up JACK without it fighting the default sound server. Can someone give me a step-by-step method for what I need to do to plug in my midi machine and hear music when I press keys as simply as possible (without messing up pulseaudio, ie, so I can still access Skype and ordinary desktop stuff)? I'm fine installing JACK, but I'd like to sandbox it a little if it has the chance of messing up regular desktop.   • How can I get a scheduled task to run for a user regardless of which computer the user is logged onto?

    I've got a scheduled task that needs to run for a user at a specific time. However, the user sometimes logs onto one machine, the next day onto another, then next week onto yet another. At some pint during the day, the user might have to log onto another machine. How do I get the scheduled task to run regardless of which computer the user is using? I could of course create the task on all computers, but that seems a bit overkill. Running a script on log on (or a group policy) to create the task doesn't seem a good method either. Any ideas? Basically I want the scheduled task to be defined on the user instead of on the computer. If in the end I need to choose between the two options above, which is best?

  • on Red Hat Enterprise and CentOS, what is creating /var/run/reboot-required?

    On CentOS 5.8+ and Red Hat Enterprise 6+, when installing/updating packages, I notice a flag file /var/run/reboot-required is created when appropriate. On Ubuntu (and Debian too, I'm guessing), if package "update-notifier-common" is installed, a package postinst script triggers creation of this flag file. On RHEL/CentOS I can't figure out how this is happening. For instance, on RHEL and CentOS I recently installed several updates and /var/run/reboot-required was created. One of them was an "openssl" package upgrade. I assume this was what created the flag file, since on Ubuntu it also works this way. However I looked at all "rpm -q --scripts" for each updated package, and didn't see anything that was likely to have created that flag file. Mostly I saw "postinstall program: /sbin/ldconfig". So my questions are: What creates this flag file on RHEL/CentOS? Does it require a special package to be installed, analogous to the "update-notifier-common" package on Ubuntu?

When I installed the Windows I let a 100Gb partition empty to install Ubuntu someday. I was using Linux on a Virtualbox, but this week I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 in this 100Gb partition. I used the Ubuntu alternate cd, because the 'normal' cd was giving me trouble with the Raid0. The grub installation always reported a error. After a lot of work I found that I nedded to install grub on partition /dev/mapper/isw_chjbfeec_DougRaid1 (see Bootinfo below). The Windows installation created a 100Mb boot partition, so I needed to install grub in this partition. Now I have the Ubuntu working 100% ok. The problem is, the Windows is not booting! The windows option is present on the grub menu, but when I choose the windows option there is a black screen and after that the grub is reloaded.   • How can I make fsck run non-interactively at boot time?

    I have a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server in a datacenter 1500 miles away. Twice now on reboot the system decided it had to fsck. Unfortunately Ubuntu ran fsck in interactive mode, so I had to ask someone at my datacenter to go over, plug in a console, and press the Y key. How do I set it up so that fsck runs in non-interactive mode at boot time with the -y or -p (aka -a) flag? If I understand Ubuntu's boot process correctly, init invokes mountall which in turn invokes fsck. However I don't see any way to configure how fsck is invoked. Is this possible? (To head off one suggestion; I'm aware I can use tune2fs -i 0 -c 0 to prevent periodic fscks. That may help a little but I need the system to try to come back up even if it had a real reason to fsck, say after a power failure.) In response to followup questions, here's the pertinent details of my /etc/fstab. I don't believe I've edited this at all from what Ubuntu put there.     im really new to ubuntu 12.04 and ive been trying to get remote desktop services between me and my server. and i dont have any spare monitors, keyboards, or mice. i did connect said items too the server and got teamviewer running and connected. but i cant use those components every time i want to go remote desktop. i have ssh but i want a GUI on hand for annoying stressful situations. i read somewhere that ubuntu doesnt start a gui if there is no monitor connected. and tried those xorg.conf setups to no avail. i believe this is the reason why my headlesds setup isnt working. how can i get my GUI to startup while headless?

In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop.   • is it really necessary to run Apache as a front-end to Glassfish/JBoss/Tomcat?

    I'm primarily a Java developer, and I come to you with a question that straddles the divide between developers and sysadmins. Years ago, when it was a novel thing to run Tomcat as an app server, it was customary to front it with Apache. As I understand it, this was done because: Java was considered "slow", and it was helpful to have Apache serve static content directly. Tomcat couldn't listen to ports 80/443 unless run as root, which was dangerous. Java is no longer considered slow, and I doubt adding Apache to the mix will actually help speed things up. As for the ports issue, there are probably simpler ways to connect app servers to ports 80/443 these days. So my question is- is there really any benefit to fronting Java Webapps with Apache these days? If so, is Apache still the way to go? Should I look at Nginx? Instead of Tomcat I'm using Glassfish, if that matters.

  • Can I run a web site from my home network without jeapordizing other computers on my LAN?

    I have a home LAN with 5 computers and a NAS, all connected to a Linksys router which is connected to my Cox cable modem. I'm interested in having one of my computers run an IIS-based web site and to have it be accessible to the internet with a static IP. However, I do not want o jeapordize the safety of the other computers on my home network! Is there anyway to do this safely, or as safe as possible? I may also like to run an FTP server from this computer. Finally, optionally I would like to allow remote access to this computer from the internet--but it seems to me that that may increase the security risk to the other computers substantially.

  • Why can't I grant exec on dbms_lock.sleep() OR create a procedure using it (but I can run it fine on its own)

    I am trying to write a small bit of PL/SQL that has a non-CPU burning sleep in it. The following works in sqldeveloper begin dbms_lock.sleep(5); end; BUT (as the same user), I can't do the following: create or replace procedure sleep(seconds in number) is begin dbms_lock.sleep(seconds); end; without the error "identifer "DBMS_LOCK" must be declared... Funny as I could run it without a procedure. Just as strange, when I log in as a DBA, I can run the command grant exec on dbms_lock to public; and I get ERROR at line 1: ORA-00990: missing or invalid privilege This is oracle version "Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production"

  • Is it possible to run bash builtin from non bash script?

    Is it possible to run for example history -w for underlying bash shell from ruby script? Or better is it possible to run builtin command for bash shell knowing only its pid? The only way I found is to trap signal like trap "history -w" SIGUSR1 and then send signal to process, but I am not sure that it is a good practice and USR1 is not used by bash, also this way I can execute max 2 commands (USR1 and USR2). And I have to define trap before using it. I am on Mac so there is not SIGRTMIN..SIGRTMAX.

  • GitLab Unicorn Service crashes all the time, 502 Error

    I used the Installer of Gitlab CE and so far everything looks well. Then when finished the installation I always got 502 Error on my website, since then I did a little research, then I saw that my gitlab service unicorn restarts/crashes every 10 seconds, so I assume this is the reason why I get 502, but I don't know why it crashes all the time. How can I prevent this?
