• Limiting access in Silverlight\Pivotviewer

- by sparaflAsh
I'm going to deploy a pivotviewer application. As some of you might know this silverlight application load a .cxml index file for a group of images. My need is to make .cxml file and image files not accessible for the user. Now, if I don't have a need I usually code like this in C# and the file is hosted in the documentroot: _cxml = new CxmlCollectionSource(new Uri("http://www.myurl.it/Collection.cxml", UriKind.Absolute)); This means that my cxml and then the images are available by http for everyone who knows the URI. I'm a newbie to server configuration, so any help/hint would be deeply appreciated. Someone suggested me to take the files out of the root, but it seems like I can't go to pick them up if they are not a URL in Silverlight. At least I didn't managed to understand how. Someone else suggested me to play with web.config file to hide URLs, but I don't really know where to start. My question is, what's the best practice to hide my stuff? Obviously I can edit the question if you need more details.

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook – Book Review (sort of)

- by Jim Duffy
I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. Anyway, what I like about this book is that it focuses on a specific area of Silverlight development, accessing data and services. The book is broken down into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the Nuts and Bolts of Silverlight 4 Chapter 2: An Introduction to Data Binding Chapter 3: Advanced Data Binding Chapter 4: The Data Grid Chapter 5: The DataForm Chapter 6: Talking to Services Chapter 7: Talking to WCF and ASMX Services Chapter 8: Talking to REST and WCF Data Services Chapter 9: Talking to WCF RIA Services Chapter 10: Converting Your Existing Applications to Use Silverlight As you can see this book is all about working with Silverlight 4 and data. I’m looking forward to taking a closer look at it. Have a day. :-|

• AesManaged and RijndaelManaged

- by xscape
Im currently developing a Silverlight application that connects to an old webservice. Our old webservice uses an encryption tool which silverlight does not support. Finally, we decided to used AesManaged for encryption, however, our webservice does not support AesManaged. Is their a way to decrypt an AesManaged to RijndaelManaged? If yes, can you please post a sample snippet? Your feedback is highly needed. Thank you.

• Reset VS2010 Project Templates?

- by Jimbo Jones
I installed Blend 4 RC recently but strangely it deleted some of my VS2010 projects templates, including the most important ones being Silverlight User Control and Silverlight Application. Does anybody know how to get back these templates or tell VS2010 to reset all templates? A bit frustrating, I'm having to create projects on my laptop then copy them to my desktop manually :(

• HttpUtility.UrlEncode in Windows Phone 7?

- by lfoust
The regular .Net framework contains HttpUtility.UrlEncode in the System.Web Assembly and in Silverlight it appears it was moved to System.Windows.Browser. But in Windows Phone 7 (which I thought was the same as Silverlight) I can't seem to find a proper way to UrlEncode anything. Neither of the previously mentioned assemblies are available in the Windows Phone 7 environment.

I have been looking for a Silverlight solution, like Silverlight Bridge. I tried to implement SLFileManager that is based on SB, but with little success. I need to be able to upload images, delete/rename etc and also insert the image inside TinyMCE. Any ideas?

• Using [assembly: System.Runtime.CompilerServices.InternalsVisibleTo("System.Windows")] To expose Int

- by Anthony
Ok so I had a qustion awhile back regarding Silverlight 4 Data Binding with anonymous types, one of the answers was to use [assembly: System.Runtime.CompilerServices.InternalsVisibleTo("System.Windows")] in your AssemblyInfo.cs file. I tried this and it works! I know I'm making all my internal properties classes and methods visible to the System.Windows Assembley. But what kind of risk is this with the following in mind: The product is a hosted silverlight based web application, so it wont be distributed. Thanks in advance

• redoing object model construction to fit with asynchronous data fetching

- by Andrew Patterson
I have a modeled a set of objects that correspond with some real world concepts. TradeDrug, GenericDrug, TradePackage, DrugForm Underlying the simple object model I am trying to provide is a complex medical terminology that uses numeric codes to represent relationships and concepts, all accessible via a REST service - I am trying to hide away some of that complexity with an object wrapper. To give a concrete example I can call TradeDrug d = Searcher.FindTradeDrug("Zoloft") or TradeDrug d = new TradeDrug(34) where 34 might be the code for Zoloft. This will consult a remote server to find out some details about Zoloft. I might then call GenericDrug generic = d.EquivalentGeneric() System.Out.WriteLine(generic.ActiveIngredient().Name) in order to get back the generic drug sertraline as an object (again via a background REST call to the remote server that has all these drug details), and then perhaps find its ingredient. This model works fine and is being used in some applications that involve data processing. Recently however I wanted to do a silverlight application that used and displayed these objects. The silverlight environment only allows asynchronous REST/web service calls. I have no problems with how to make the asychhronous calls - but I am having trouble with what the design should be for my object construction. Currently the constructors for my objects do some REST calls sychronously. public TradeDrug(int code) { form = restclient.FetchForm(code) name = restclient.FetchName(code) etc.. } If I have to use async 'events' or 'actions' in order to use the Silverlight web client (I know silverlight can be forced to be a synchronous client but I am interested in asychronous approaches), does anyone have an guidance or best practice for how to structure my objects. I can pass in an action callback to the constructor public TradeDrug(int code, Action<TradeDrug> constructCompleted) { } but this then allows the user to have a TradeDrug object instance before what I want to construct is actually finished. It also doesn't support an 'event' async pattern because the object doesn't exist to add the event to until it is constructed. Extending that approach might be a factory object that itself has an asynchronous interface to objects factory.GetTradeDrugAsync(code, completedaction) or with a GetTradeDrugCompleted event? Does anyone have any recommendations?

• What ASP.NET MVC Route controls the appearance of hashes in URIs?

- by rasx
I have integrated a Silverlight Navigation Application in an ASP.NET MVC web. However when Silverlight calls for its default page, say, IndexPage ASP.NET MVC displays the route as: http://localhost/#/IndexPage I have tried to get ASP.NET MVC to respond to this route: http://localhost/#IndexPage but I am unable to find a configuration that works with this. Does ASP.NET MVC routes respond to hashes in general?

So is there any issue with this code ? Code Sample :http://lm-bucket-for-forum-post.s3.amazonaws.com/HtMLViewerSilverLight.zip working sample : Just replace ".zip" with "TestPage.html" in above URL. Please let me know how can I solve it ? Thanks in advance, Laxmilal Menaria

- by daemonfire300
I got a Silverlight App with-in a Web Project Web Silverlight The web contains a service: [WebService(Namespace = "svChat")] [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)] // To allow this Web Service to be called from script, using ASP.NET AJAX, uncomment the following line. //[System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService] public class GetIPService : System.Web.Services.WebService { public GetIPService () { //Uncomment the following line if using designed components //InitializeComponent(); } [WebMethod] public string GetIp() { return HttpContext.Current.Request.ServerVariables["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR"]; } } And I got a class in my Silverlight App using the Service: public class Client { private string ip; private string created; #region Properties public string Ip { get { return ip; } set { ip = value; } } public string Created { get { return created; } set { created = value; } } #endregion public Client() { } public void SetIp() { ServiceReference1.GetIPServiceSoapClient scIpClient = new svChat.ServiceReference1.GetIPServiceSoapClient(); scIpClient.GetIpCompleted += new EventHandler<svChat.ServiceReference1.GetIpCompletedEventArgs>(IpService_Completed); scIpClient.GetIpAsync(); } private void IpService_Completed(object sender, ServiceReference1.GetIpCompletedEventArgs e) { this.ip = e.Result; } } After Client is created, SetIp() is called, and Client.Ip is added to a text box. Nothing happens. Ip = null. Service itselfs works, tested it. Getting Ip by the above code works. Gettings Ip via service through Silverlight App does not work. <configuration> <system.serviceModel> <bindings> <basicHttpBinding> <binding name="GetIPServiceSoap" maxBufferSize="2147483647" maxReceivedMessageSize="2147483647"> <security mode="None" /> </binding> </basicHttpBinding> </bindings> <client> <endpoint address="http://localhost:2090/svChat.Web/GetIPService.asmx" binding="basicHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="GetIPServiceSoap" contract="ServiceReference1.GetIPServiceSoap" name="GetIPServiceSoap" /> </client> </system.serviceModel> </configuration> Any ideas? regards,

• How can I read a binary string in C#?

- by Sergey
There is a php script which sends a binary string to the client application: $binary_string = pack('i',count($result_matrix)); foreach ($result_matrix as $row) { foreach ($row as $cell) { $binary_string .= pack('d',$cell); } } echo $binary_string; Silverlight application receives $binary_string via POST protocol. How can I parse this binary string? Or maybe there is a better way to send matrix from PHP to Silverlight?
