  • Programming tourism

    I'm going on vacation to Paris, France for 10 days. Actually, it's my girlfriend's wish to go there but I'm not very interested in visiting, sightseeing, etc. Recently, I came up with an idea of trying to do something like programming tourism. :) I'd like to do something related to programming in a startup-like company. I do not want a salary or any kind of compensation. I want to overview process, social aspects, environment and "what it feels like" to development software in another country. I'm from Russia. I've been a software developer since 2003. I prefer C#4 but I'm ready to use anything Turing-complete. I have some MS certifications and am familiar with all .NETs since 1.1. Currently I'm finishing PhD in CS. I'm interested in multidimensional indexing and I can turn any piece of data and code to OLAP system. :) But it'd take too much time. What can I do? I have no more than one week. I want a totally complete project in a short amount of time. Implement some features in well-tested project Do a code review Debug memory, performance and concurrency issues Do unit testing So, about the questions: Is it legal? I'm ready to sign NDA if it's necessary. I'll have tourist visa. Is it possible? I'm really sure that bureaucratic companies with lots of HRs and PMs will not allow such experiments. But small companies can afford it. I'm ready to guarantee support on my code after leaving home :) P.S. I still havn't started learning French :) I hope it will not take too much time :) P.P.S. Yes, it's girlfriend-approved. What's in it for me? It's fun. It's fun to see new systems and people who created them. It's fun to complete meaningful things. Quickly. What's in it for them? Feature, debug, review or test. If my short-term colleagues will like this style of working I can invite them to make same trip into my company :) I think in Russia it's even more exciting :)

  • After removing Ubuntu Builder there is still folder in home directory. Why? How to remove it?

    I removed Ubuntu Builder using Synaptic with option Mark for Complete Removal. I thought that gonna delete folder (made by Ubuntu Builder) in home dir, but it's not. AFAIK Mark for Complete Removal is same as Purging, and that should delete all files made by program. Am I wrong? Is it safe to delete it with sudo rm -r /home/ubuntu-builder because it is in home dir? And last question. Why is it made folder in /home instead in ~/ dir?

  • Windows Form hangs when running threads

    JI have written a .NET C# Windows Form app in Visual Studio 2008 that uses a Semaphore to run multiple jobs as threads when the Start button is pressed. It’s experiencing an issue where the Form goes into a comma after being run for 40 minutes or more. The log files indicate that the current jobs complete, it picks a new job from the list, and there it hangs. I have noticed that the Windows Form becomes unresponsive when this happens. The form is running in its own thread. error at build time, and a day of google searching has turned up other instances of this error caused by different triggers, and solutions for those propblems didn't work for me. I also found a single report on the Oracle forums that seemed to be a carbon copy of this issue, but there were no replies. The application is written in Weblogic Workshop 10, runs on Weblogic Server 10.3, and uses Beehive / NetUI. Not sure if that would make a difference or not though. The build scripts were automatically generated by Weblogic Workshop, with some tweaks and fixes made to other aspects of the files by myself to fix other compatability issues. I am using Java 1.6.0_23 from Sun, and Ant 1.8.1 Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Binding TabControl ItemsSource to an ObservableCollection causes content to refresh on focus

    I'm creating an WPF application using the MVVM framework, and I've adopted several features from Josh Smith's article on MVVM here... Most importantly, I'm binding a TabControl to an ObservableCollection of ViewModels. This means that am using a tabbed MDI interface that displays a UserControl as the content of a TabItem. The issue I'm seeing in my application is that when I have several tabs and I flip back and forth between tabs, the content is being refersh each time I change tabs. If you download Josh Smith's source code, you'll see that his app has the same problem. For example, click on the "View All Customers" button and scroll down to the bottom the ListView. Next click on the "Create New Customer" button. When you switch back to the All Customer view you'll notice that the ListView scrolls back to the top. If you switch back to the New Customer tab and place your cursor in one of the TextBoxes, then switch to All Customers tab and back, you'll notice that the cursor is now gone. I imagine that this is because I'm using an ObservableCollection, but I can't be sure. Is there any way to prevent the tab's content from refreshing when it receives the focus?

    Hi guys, Firstly i'll preface by saying that i am a complete Cocoa touch/objective c noob (.Net dev having a dabble) I have searched on Google as well as here but cannot seem to find an easy solution. I have a UItabbarcontroller view with a UINavigationController inside its first tab I have the root view for this UINavigationController stored in a seperate class and NIB as i am trying to seperate the data viewing from the data loading (i'm going to reuse the table list in multiple places in my database) and simply pass the root view its data using a loading method and have it take it from there. What i want to happen: App loads and loads the first view of the tab bar (A UINavigationController) The UINavigationController inside the first view loads a root view (a UIViewController with a table view) and sets its title The UINavigationController loads the data from a web service and parses it The UINavigationController sends the data to a loading method inside the UIViewController Am i thinking about this completely wrongly? What currently happens: the first tab bar loads with an empty uinavigationcontroller (no table view) the data methods fire and get the webservice data this child view gets sent its data using the loading method the tableview delegate events fail to fire inside the child view telling it to load the data into the table I just can't seem how to load my second view inside the root view of the navigation controller and then send it my data?

  • Connecting to a Ghost User in Flex RTMFP

    I have a simple Flex RTMFP P2P video app in the same mold as the Adobe Cirrus VideoPhone Sample application. A problem I've been encountering in developing this app (the same problem occurs in the sample) is when you try to connect to a ghost Stratus instance i.e you try to call someone whose Stratus id is in the database but who is no longer on the page. So here's an example of what I mean: Let's say you go to the Adobe Stratus sample and connect as Dan. Then open up a new tab, go to the sample again and connect as Fred. If from this point, you (as Fred) call Dan everything will work fine. But, if you close the tab in which you connected as Dan, and then from the Fred tab try to connect to Dan the program will just hang. I would have thought there would be a NetStream event that would be triggered if you tried to connect to a Stratus instance that is not longer online but I can't seem to find anything besides NetStream.Connect.Rejected which doesn't seem to be called. Any help is much appreciated!

  • Help with route rewrite in asp.net mvc

    Im having a really hard time understanding routing. Please help me with this problem. Each of my controllers have these three actions right now Users have Index, Create and Edit Locations have Index, Create and Edit Companies have Index, Create and Edit The thing is, it all gets done through ajax. I have jquery ui tabs with two tabs for each, Create and Edit So the Index method is always the one that gets called for action links. and inside this main view is that you can call(by clicking on the tab icon) the other methods that return an ajax view that gets output into the jqeury tab (I hope thats clear) I have a sidebar with links to the controllers. and to specific methods of these controllers. The wanted behavior is that it should actually go into the Index Method and then with some logic autoload the wanted tab. It all works just fine right now. But my urls are horrible. To get to the create method for Users I have to go this url http://localhost/Users/Index/1 http://localhost/Users/Index/2 I want the behavior of these links to be remapped to these links http://localhost/Users/Create http://localhost/Users/Edit So even though it seems as if you are calling the Create method of the controller you are actualling always calling the Index Method.... (I know how to transform Create into "1" and Edit into two, so dont worry about that part Hope thats clear. Thanks in advance Edit: Just realized that this might not be possible cause then when I actually need to call the methods (with ajax) it wont know what to do.... am I correct?

    I AM GETTING THE FOLLOWING ERROR IN A VERY SIMPLE CLASS LIBRARY: Error 1 Unable to copy file "obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources" to "obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources". Could not find file 'obj\Debug\SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer.Resources.resources'. SMIT.SysAdmin.BusinessLayer Going to the Project Properties-Resource tab, I see that I defined do resources. Still, I tried to delete the resource file and recreate by going to the resource tab. When I recompile, I still get the same error. Why is it even looking for a resource file? I define no resources on teh project properties tab and added no new resource file items. Any suggestions of things to try? Update: I found the missing file in an old backup. I copied it to the location where the compiler expected it, and then successfully recompiled the project that previously had compile time errors. However, when I rebuild the entire solution, it deletes the file that I previously restored and I'm back to where I started. My solution contains several projects (maybe 10 or so). Could VS 2005 be having a problem determining dependencies and the proper order to compile these projects?

  • View Controller's viewDidLoad method finishing before applicationDidFinishLaunching

    I'm creating a fairly complex iPhone app using Core Data. Up until now, things have been working fine. As the app has been getting more complex, however, a new problem has come up: the first view controller is finishing its viewDidLoad method before the AppDelegate gets even halfway through its applicationDidFinishLaunching method. The view controller is not the root, which is a tab bar controller. The VC in question is the one for the default selected tab on the tab bar. It's getting instantiated by IB. Nothing like this has occurred before in my experience, and it's throwing off the important initialization I'm doing in the AppDelegate (getting objects from Core Data and preparing them for use) . Furthermore, it's intermittent -- sometimes the delegate does finish first. Has anyone else noticed a difficulty like this? Any sample code that deals with such an issue? I suppose that the answer is to make the VC load the data that the AppDelegate is getting ready only when the AppDelegate sends a message that it's ready. I'm a bit concerned that this is adding something that will just end up biting me in the butt later on.

There is also a Save button which when clicked, calls this.ValidateChildren(ValidationConstraints.Enabled) Now, I click save and a geniune validation error occurs. I correct the error and then click save again - valdiation errors occur on comboboxes on a different tab. If I navigate to this tab and click save, everything works fine. How can this be? I haven't changed any values in the comboboxes so how can the fail validation then pass validation? The comboboxes are bound to a dataset with their selectedValue and Text set. I just don't understand what is happening here. This behaviour also occurs for some textboxes too. The validation rule is that they have to be a decimal - the default value is zero, which is allowed. The same thing happens, they fail validation the first time - I make no changes, click save again and they pass validation. If you need any further information please let me know thanks Barry

  • question about combining jquery tabs and a toggling horizontal slide panel

    Hi, I'm attempting to combine a horizontally sliding panel and the ui tabs plugin. The idea is that you press a button, a panel slides open and inside is a series of tabs that expand content below. In terms of getting this to function in the most basic sense, so far so good: http://www.claylerner.com/bio_alt/ And my source looks like this: $(document).ready(function(){ $(".btn-slide").click(function(){ $("#panel").animate({width: 'toggle'}); }); }); $(function() { $("#tabs").tabs({ selected: -1 }); }); However, the problem I'm running into occurs when you have a tab exapnded and then you collapse the horizontal panel--as you can see the animation that hides the currently expanded tab looks pretty clunky. I get that this is happening because there's not a separate function hiding the expanded tab. So my question is, how can I make it so that when the button to collapse the panel (".btn-slide") is toggled it first hides any currently expanded tabs and then hides the open panel. Thanks so much!

  • NetBeans Tips and Tricks

    I just saw an Eclipse tips & tricks post and was wondering if anyone had any tips & tricks for my IDE of choice: NetBeans. Here's a few I know and find to be useful: Removing a package: After you remove a package in NetBeans, it sticks around as a grayed-out package in your Project view. To get rid of that, switch to Files view and delete the directory. Alt-Insert (in Windows) opens up a Generate submenu at your cursor. A nice shortcut for quickly generating getters/setters (among other things). Selecting a chunk of code, right-clicking and then clicking "Refactor Introduce Method" will have NetBeans introduce a method, complete with arguments and return value. Of course you have to make sure the chunk of code only has one return value. Sometimes when you run a build and it crashes, the Java window sticks around at the bottom. I used to just click X until Windows let me End Task, but there's a nicer way to get rid of them. Click "Run Stop Build/Run" and NetBeans will close the window for you. It'll even let you close multiple applications at once. These may seem obvious to grizzled NetBeans developers, but I thought they might be useful for NetBeans newbs like me. Anyone else have any tips/tricks to share? Here are some from the comments: NetBeans allows for code templates. You can even add yours on the Code Templates tab under the Editor settings on the Options window. Some examples: Type sout and hit the tab key as a shorcut for System.out.println("") Type psvm and hit the tab key as a shorcut for public static void main(String args[]) {} Ctrl Shift C: Comments out the selected block of code. Alt Shift F: Formats the selected block of code. Ctrl E: Deletes current line. Ctrl Shift I: Fixes your imports, handy if you've just written a piece of code that needs a lot of packages imported.

  • Dismissing UIImagePickerController from UITabBarController

    I have a tab bar application whereby one tab uses a navigation controller to move through a series of views. On the final view, there is a button to add a photo, which presents a UIImagePickerController. So far, so good - however when I finish picking the image, or cancel the operation, the previous view is loaded, but without the tab bar. I'm sure I'm missing something elementary, but any suggestions on how to properly release the UIImagePickerController would be much appreciated.   • tabs on web page and seo

    I know there is a lot of js plugins to do "tabs", but also i can do it my self. Just have some elements with display:none and when you click some other element display changes to block, or something like that. Now, i have a one site i am developing, where i am giving specific users(all within one usergroup) access to edit only one page which i have created. That part is done. Now i have a request to give those users ability to edit 2 more sub pages, but since its all gonna be the same, like text with some pictures, i was thinking to put 3 textarea's so they will have 1 page where they can edit content of all those 3 pages. What i also thought was to only have one page and on it to have 3 tabs. Each tab for each possible page. When i started thinking about that the only concern was seo. How does seo works regarding elements with display:none? What jquery tabs plugin do you recommend that has the ability to access tabs via id of the element in url? I was looking at jquery ui demo but there when you get the url of one of those tabs and try to open it in new window, that tab is not opened.
