• Windows failover cluster - virtual node with multiple Client Access Names

  I recently encountered a customer environment in which they had failover cluster where one of the virtual nodes had more than one 'Client Access Name' (i.e. more than one IP address and DNS name for the single virtual node). Long story short we had to modify our software to deal with this situation, but we want to recreate the situation in house to test it before releasing. I have been unable to locate any information about how or why you would end up with a virtual node that has more than one access name. Does anyone know how I can set up a Windows failover cluster where a virtual node has more than one access name/IP?

• Mounting external usb harddisk (ext4) in virtual box in windows

  I would like to mount my external linux formatted usb harddrive in a virtual machine. The host is windows 7. Unfortunately virtual box doesn't enumerate the external harddrive in the options menu of the virtual machine, even though it shows all other devices connected to the host. Windows can find the harddrive, but obviously just gives me the option to reformat it, because it doesn't support ext4. (ext2fsd or Ext2Read are no options, as I need newer ext4 features) How can I add a filter for my external harddrive so it is recognized by my virtual machine?

• C# SerialPort - Problems mixing ports with different baud rates.

  Greetings, I have two devices that I would like to connect over a serial interface, but they have incompatible connections. To get around this problem, I connected them both to my PC and I'm working on a C# program that will route traffic on COM port X to COM port Y and vice versa. The program connects to two COM ports. In the data received event handler, I read in incoming data and write it to the other COM port. To do this, I have the following code: private void HandleDataReceived(SerialPort inPort, SerialPort outPort) { byte[] data = new byte[1]; while (inPort.BytesToRead > 0) { // Read the data data[0] = (byte)inPort.ReadByte(); // Write the data if (outPort.IsOpen) { outPort.Write(data, 0, 1); } } } That code worked fine as long as the outgoing COM port operated at a higher baud rate than the incoming COM port. If the incoming COM port was faster than the outgoing COM port, I started missing data. I had to correct the code like this: private void HandleDataReceived(SerialPort inPort, SerialPort outPort) { byte[] data = new byte[1]; while (inPort.BytesToRead > 0) { // Read the data data[0] = (byte)inPort.ReadByte(); // Write the data if (outPort.IsOpen) { outPort.Write(data, 0, 1); while (outPort.BytesToWrite > 0); //<-- Change to fix problem } } } I don't understand why I need that fix. I'm new to C# (this is my first program), so I'm wondering if there is something I am missing. The SerialPort defaults to a 2048 byte write buffer and my commands are less than ten bytes. The write buffer should have the ability to buffer the data until it can be written to a slower COM port. In summary, I'm receiving data on COM X and writing the data to COM Y. COM X is connected at a faster baud rate than COM Y. Why doesn't the buffering in the write buffer handle this difference? Why does it seem that I need to wait for the write buffer to drain to avoid losing data? Thanks!

• XP Mode (Windows Virtual PC for Windows 7) no longer requires hardware virtualisation - hurrah !

  Windows Virtual PC (aka XP Mode) When XP Mode was released, it insisted on hardware virtualisation being present on your CPU and enabled in the BIOS.  Given that Windows Virtual PC was based on an improved Virtual PC 2007, which provided hardware virtualisation as a user selectable option, I did wonder why on earth Microsoft thought this was a good idea.  Not only do many people not have a CPU with hardware virtualisation support, some manufacturers don't provide a BIOS option to enable this setting, especially on laptops - yes Sony, Toshiba and Acer, I'm looking at you. Dumb and dumber This issue became a double whammy; not only was Microsoft a bit dumb on not supporting Windows Virtual PC without hardware virtualisation, your hardware manufacturer was also dumb in not supporting the option in the BIOS. Microsoft update to Windows Virtual PC Belatedly, Microsoft has seen the problem with this hardware virtualisation requirement and has now released a new version of Windows Virtual PC that works without hardware virtualisation.  This is really good news for those with older (or limited) CPUs and rubbish BIOS firmware.   Just a quick post to celebrate another siginificant milestone for Exalogic! After a few days of preparations and some hard work we succeeded in upgrading our Exalogic quarterrack to the newly released Elastic Cloud version 2.0.1.1.0. This version was just recently released on July 25th. This new version turns your Exalogic into a virtual datacenter with many very neat cloud provisioning capabilities. There are many more possibilities in this version to provide strict network and vServer group isolation where needed and it helps you manage multitenancy and delegate your cloud administration. How did we fare? Apart from some small inconveniences and minor issues I can tell you it all went remarkably well, provided you do proper homework on the prerequisite requirements and you stick to the instructions all the way through (there’s some 37 steps to cover). We as a specialized Exalogic partner had early access to this version and did some early adopter work. As a customer this is all done for you as Oracle will deliver a new Exalogic with this version from the factory if you so desire, or upgrade your current ones. • Event notification for ::SCardListReaders() [migrated]

  In the PC/SC (Personal Computer Smart Card) Appln, I have (MSCAPI USB CCID based) 1) Calling ::SCardListReaders() returns SCARD_E_NO_READERS_AVAILABLE (0x8010002E). This call is made after OS starts fresh after reboot, from a thread which is part of my custom windows service. 2) Adding delay before ::SCardListReaders() call solves the problem. 3) How can I solve this problem elegantly ? Not using delay & waiting for some event to notify me. since a) Different machines may require different delay values b) Cannot loop since the error code is genuine c) Could not find this event as part of System Event Notification Service or similar COM interface d) platform is Windows 7 Any Help Appreciated.

  Hi I am very new to Ubuntu and am not sure what I’m doing wrong.... I’m trying to install virtual box but when I do I get this dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of virtualbox-4.3: virtualbox-4.3 depends on psmisc. I’ve done apt-get -f install but it still says this. I don’t know what else to do please help. when I do sudo apt-get install psmisc I get this psmisc is already the newest version.
