  I am having repeated and frequent crashes ending session whenever I take certain actions such as loading gmail under Chrome. Oddly, the same is not happening when I go to gmail under Chrome. After rooting around in /var/logs it appears to me that he trigger is something to do with libc.so.6 (see below). • Samba new file ownership, permissions configuration

  I have recently installed Samba on my server. Now I have a question about permissions and how to set it up. Currently I mount the Samba shared drive to my laptop with this line in /etc/fstab: //<host>/share /mnt/melka-server-data/ cifs username=<usrname> password=<passwd> _netdev 0 0 This works, as I can read from the files and create them (as root). The problem is when I want to create files as a regular user. I always get a Permission Denied error. Then the file zdar was created by magicmaster just by calling touch. I got the Permission Denied, but it was still created, though it belongs to nobody and I can't write into it. When I create a file as root, it still belongs to nobody, but at least I can write into it. What am I missing? I didn't notice anything in Samba config that would be related to this and I don't like the idea of having to log on as root in order to copy files.. Thanks

What will the Oracle Solaris team have to say? Will the Oracle Linux team have any surprises? And what about Oracle hardware? For my part, I'll be one of the lizards at the OTN Lounge with the OTN crew, handing out t-shirts to system admins and developers, or anyone who is willing to impersonate one. • Incompatible group permissions in Linux - Is it a bug?

  I am on Ubuntu 11.04. I am creating another user and placing an existing user in the group of other user, hoping to write in the home directory of other user. # uname -a Linux vini 2.6.38-11-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 12 21:18:14 UTC 2011 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux # whoami sachin # su root # useradd -m -U foo // create user foo # usermod -a -G foo sachin // add user `sachin' to group `foo' # chmod 770 /home/foo/ # exit # whoami sachin # cd /home/foo/ bash: cd: /home/foo/: Permission denied # groups sachin sachin : sachin foo This is totally weird. Though user sachin is in group foo, and group bits for /home/foo/ is set to rwx, sachin can't chdir to /home/foo/. I am not able to understand this. • Solaris at LISA 2011

  As is our custom, the Solaris team will be out in force at the USENIX LISA conference; this year it's in Boston so it's sort of a home game for me for a change.  The big event we'll have is Tuesday, December 6, the Oracle Solaris 11 Summit Day.  We'll be covering deployment, ZFS, Networking, Virtualization, Security, Clustering, and how Oracle apps run best on Solaris 11.  We've done this the past couple of years and it's always a very full day.On Wednesday, December 7, we've got a couple of BOF sessions scheduled back-to-back.  At 7:30 we'll have the ever-popular engineering panel, with all of us who are speaking at Tuesday's summit day there for a free-flowing discussion of all things Solaris.  Following that, Bart & I are hosting a second BOF at 9:30 to talk more about deployment for clouds and traditional data centers.Also, on Wednesday and Thursday we'll have a booth at the exhibition where there'll be demos and just a general chance to talk with various Solaris staff from engineering and product management.The conference program looks great and I look forward to seeing you there!

• Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

  I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically. • Synaptics drivers are not loading on Kubuntu 13.10 on Dell Vostro 2420

  I freshly installed Kubuntu 13.10, 32 bit version on newly purchased Dell Vostro 2420. everything is working fine except scrolling and multitouch features through touchpad. I am able to change position of cursor using touchpad and able to tap (single click and double click) but scrolling is not working I tried to find out solution by searching on google but could not find proper solution to load synaptics drivers. i am listing some details: Laptop: Dell Vostro 2420 Linux Kernel version and distribution: 3.11.0-12-generic, Kubuntu 13.10 output of xinput list is ? If I edit this array like array(1,2,3), it means the output need to show like 1 2 3 The concept is maximum 3 column only. If we give array(1,2,3,4,5), it means the output should be 1 3 5 2 4 Suppose we will give array(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9), then it means output is 1 4 7 2 5 8 3 6 9 that is, maximum 3 column only. Depends upon the the given input, the rows will be created with 3 columns. Is this possible with PHP? I am doing small Research & Development in array functions. I think this is possible. • A short but intense GCC Gathering in London

  About one week ago I joined in London many long time GCC friends and acquaintances for a gathering organized by Google (in particular I guess should be thanked Diego and Ian). Only a weekend, and I wasn't able to attend on Sunday morning, but a very good occasion to raise some issues in a very relaxed way, in particular those at the border between areas of competence, which are the most difficult to discuss during the normal work days. If you are interested in a general overview and some notes this is a good link: http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/GCCGathering2011 As you may easily guess, the third topic is mine, which I managed to have up quite early on Friday morning thanks to the votes of some good friends like Dodji (the ordering of the topics resulted from democratic voting on Friday evening!). I learned a lot from the discussion: for example that certainly the new C++11 'final' should be exploited largely in the c++ front-end; the various reasons why devirtualization can be quite trick (but I'm really confident that Martin and Honza are going to make a good progress also basing on a set of short testcases which I promised to collect); that, as explained by Ian, the gold linker already implements the nice --icf (Identical Code Folding) facility, which some friends of mine are definitely going to like (however, see: http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=12919). I also enjoyed the observations made by Lawrence, where he remarked that in C+11 we are going to see more pointer iterations implicitly produced by the new range-based for-loop and we really want to make sure the loop optimizers are able to deal with those as well as loops explicitly using a counter. All in all, I really hope we are going to do it again!

• Importing tab delimited file into array in Visual Basic 2013 [migrated]

  I am needing to import a tab delimited text file that has 11 columns and an unknown number of rows (always minimum 3 rows). I would like to import this text file as an array and be able to call data from it as needed, throughout my project. And then, to make things more difficult, I need to replace items in the array, and even add more rows to it as the project goes on (all at runtime). Hopefully someone can suggest code corrections or useful methods. I'm hoping to use something like the array style sMyStrings(3,2), which I believe would be the easiest way to control my data. Any help is gladly appreciated, and worthy of a slab of beer. What can we lean from this roadmap ? well, if you look carefully: Oracle is announcing Solaris 11 this year. The release date should be ... check OOW11 Solaris 10 updates should still be released in 2012 (remember, released in 2005). Check the Solaris lifecycle to understand how long is Solaris to stay side by side with Solaris 11. in 2011, a great 3x Single Strand improvement for the T-Series. Some thing great under preparation. Probably revealed at Oracle Open World 2011. Good news for ISVs ! in 2012, a great 6x Troughput improvement for the M-Serie ! How can this be done ? .... • Problems updating and re-installing VLC Ubuntu 11.10

  I can't seem to fix or update, upgrade VLC AT ALL; this is what I get when trying to install, I had vlc before, but was not working properly so I uninstalled it; then I try to Install again to have the full properties. • Data Center Modernization: Harness the power of Oracle Exalogic and Exadata with PeopleSoft

Allegis Group is a $6+ billion company, offering a full range of specialized staffing and recruiting solutions to clients in a wide range of industries.   The company processes about 133,000 paychecks per week, every week of the year. With 300 offices around the world and the hefty task of managing HR and payroll, the PeopleSoft system at Allegis  is a mission-critical application. The firm is in the midst of a data center modernization initiative. Part of that project meant moving the company's PeopleSoft applications (Financials and HR Modules as well as Custom Time & Expense module) to a converged infrastructure.     The company ran a proof of concept with four different converged architectures before deciding upon Exadata and Exalogic as the platform of choice.   Performance combined with High availability for running mission-critical payroll processes drove this decision.  During the testing on Exadata and Exalogic Allegis applied a particular (11-F) tax update in production environment. What job ran for roughly six hours completed in less than 1.5 hours. • Diskless with Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to setup a new diskless solution with ubuntu 12.04 without any success. I followed this howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto But the initramfs seems not to be able to mount my nfs share. On my server side: My /etc/exports /srv/nfs4 192.168.0.0/24(fsid=0,rw,no_subtree_check) /srv/nfs4/nfsroot 192.168.0.0/24(rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,fsid=1,nohide,insecure,sync) I'm able to mount my nfs share on standard Ubuntu installation without any problem. I can mount my nfs on any client with those commands: mount 192.168.0.3:/nfsroot /mnt or mount 192.168.0.3:/srv/nfs4/nfsroot /mnt My /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default config file is DEFAULT vmlinuz-3.5.0-25-generic root=/dev/nfs initrd=initrd.img-3.5.0-25-generic nfsroot=192.168.0.3:/nfsroot ip=dhcp rw I also tried DEFAULT vmlinuz-3.5.0-25-generic root=/dev/nfs initrd=initrd.img-3.5.0-25-generic nfsroot=192.168.0.3:/srv/nfs4/nfsroot ip=dhcp rw. • Mercurial says "nothing changed", but it did. Sometimes my software is too clever.

  It seems I have found a "bug" in Mercurial. It takes a shortcut when checking for differences in tracked files. Solution - I will just change my script to apply the modification time from the SCCS history to the file prior to commit. A "touch -t " will do that easily.

• Should I use OpenGL or DX11 for my game?

  I'm planning to write a game from scratch (a BIG Game, for commercial purpose). I'm aware that there are certain compute libraries like OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, C++ AMP as well as DirectCompute - both from MS (NOT interested in CUDA) are available in the market. I'm planning to write the game from the scratch, which includes the following engines... Physics Engine AI Engine Main Game Engine (... and if anything is missed). I'm aware that, there are some free physics engine libraries in the market. Not sure about free AI engine libraries. I'm bit confused in choosing between the OpenCL, AMD APP SDK, and C++ AMP libraries (as already mentioned i'm NOT interested in CUDA). I want my game to be published in Windows/Android/Mac OSX. It means it should be a cross-platform game. I will be having "one source code" that i'll compile for various platforms like Windows/Android/Mac OSX, and any others if i missed. Note: Since I'm NOT a Java guy, kindly do NOT suggest me the Java Language. For Graphics language should i use OpenGL or DirectX 11? I have heard that OpenGL runs on a single core, and not sure of DirectX 11. Between OpenGL and DirectX which one should i follow? or else, are there any other graphics language that i need to start with? I want to make use of the parallelism in GPU as well as CPU.
