  There is a CONFIG_ATH_USER_REGD variable in OpenWrt that allows the user to override the default settings of the wireless NIC. Unfortunately grepping the Arch kernel config doesn't seem to have that, and since OpenWrt has its fair share of hacking and patches, I don't know if that's something they added or that's provided e.g. in compat-wireless. Does this setting exists for Ubuntu or BackTrack-Linux?

  I have a ubuntu Dekstop and a Windows 7 Desktop. The windows 7 is connected via wireless adapter and the ubuntu dekstop is connected via ethernet. The wireless adapter is capable of 300Mbps link speed. When my ubuntu is connected to the interet, the network becomes very very slow. I have a 15 Mbps cable broadband connection. I have had many devices connected at one with no problem, yet this one connection seems to be wreaking havoc.

• Advice needed: ADSL and VPN for a small company

  Hi. I need advice on purchasing an ADSL modem/router for a small company. At the moment, we are using the iBurst Wireless service for internet connectivity. I have the iBurst desktop modem, which connects to my Netgear WNR2000 router via ethernet. I am using the Netgear WNR2000 to deploy a wireless network as well. I have also set up a VPN using Windows Server 2003, and enabled the VPN Passthrough settings on the Netgear router. I am able to connect to the office network remotely without difficulty. However the problem that I've read is that the Netgear WNR2000 only supports VPN passthrough for a single session. This is simply not good enough. I need to be able to support at least 3 concurrent VPN connections immediately, and up to 5 in the near future. Now I am cancelling my iBurst Wireless service and have just got my ADSL line installed. I have to purchase an ADSL modem, and now is a good time to think of future proofing my investment. I need a good ADSL modem, that will allow me to support at least 5 concurrent VPN connections, or more, without breaking the bank. My budget is about 150-200 USD. I believe that my current Netgear WNR2000 router will be useless, except maybe to extend my wireless network in the future by a bit. Is there a solution where I can still use my Netgear WNR2000 for WiFi, for e.g., by connecting a cheaper non-WiFi ADSL modem to the Netgear router? If not, then which WiFi-enabled ADSL modem/router that supports at least 5 VPN passthroughs can you recommend? To sum it up, I need an ADSL modem/router that is: ADSL & ADSL2+ compatible has built-in 802.11n 270/300mbps WiFi (if having this feature doesn't push the price up too much) supports at least 5 VPN connections using VPN passthrough EDIT: Answer 2.10 in the following FAQ has me a bit worried - What is VPN/multiple VPN Pass-through?

• Vista ICS issue

  I have a strange problem with Internet Connection Sharing on a laptop running Vista Business. This laptop is connected to the internet via the ethernet port, which goes to an ADSL modem. it is automatically assigned the IP address 192.168.1.50, and the modem/gateway is 192.168.1.1 My friends laptop is running Vista Home. Previously, I would create an ad hoc wireless network, enable ICS, and everything would be perfect. My friend would have internet access via this. However, something has now mysteriously broken. If I enable ICS on the wireless connection, it resets my Local Area Connection, assigning it the manual IP address of 192.168.0.1, which means my connection to the internet is destroyed. Both wireless adapters on each network are assigned auto configuration addresses, in the 168. range. They can see each other fine, but my friends laptop cannot access the internet via mine, even after I have restored the Local Area Connection settings. I understand the computer with ICS enabled must have the IP of 192.168.0.1, but previously, before whatever went wrong, my wireless adapter would be 192.168.0.1 and my friends computer would get an IP via DHCP. I have also tried setting static IP address and making a bridge, none of which works. How can I fix this problem, and prevent enabling ICS from touching my Local Area Connection? Both machines have no firewall, have appropriate settings etc...

• Something very strange with network

  Hello, I have Windows 7 and I have very strange thing with my network. Some time I was connected through wireless router and my IP was 192.168.2.103, router's IP was 192.168.2.1 and some other IP was 192.168.2.100. The last I get from page "active DHCP clients" of web interface of the router and from "wireless clients" I may to see that 192.168.2.100 not (!) belong to my MAC address. Router build by EDimax. So after that I disabled wireless function of the router and restarted it. In this time I had not ping to 192.168.2.1. Also I had not any other connection, not wireless nor cable, but (!) I still had ping to 192.168.2.100 and I not understand what this voodoo is... • Files built with a makefile are disapearing (including the binary)

  I am building a program on a TS-7800(SBC), and when I run make (show below), it appears to go through all of the steps normally, but in the end i do not get a binary file. • Devices on one switch can't see devices on another switch

  I have RoadRunner Internet cable service hooked to a Motorola Surfboard modem. This is connected to a 10/100 wireless router (located in the garage). Downstairs, I have a ZyXEL GS-108b gigabit switch connected to one port on the router. From this switch I ran connections to a PS3, DVR, Vonage box and a wireless router (Buffalo AirStation 10/100). The Buffalo AirStation works as a wireless AP for other laptops, iPads and cell phones. Upstairs, I have an Asus gigabit switch connected to a gaming desktop, printer, and a media server on FreeNAS (PS3 Media Server on FreeNAS). The router is configured to assign static IPs to both the PS3 and the media server. Problem - I connect a laptop to the switch downstairs after disabling the wireless, thus making sure that I am accessing internet through the wired connection (and the router in the garage). All my computers, iPads and cell phones are able to connect to the internet without a problem. My PS3 connects to the interent with a wired connection but is unable to access the media server (I get a message that no media server is found). I used a wired laptop downstairs (connected to switch downstairs) but am unable to ping either the PS3 or media server! I may be doing something silly but am at my wits' end. Please help!

• Network bridge does not work on Windows 7

  I am trying to use Windows 7 to bridge my wireless and wired connections together to get wireless on a second Windows XP computer (fresh install). The network bridge is created successfully, but when I connect the cable from the first computer with the bridged connections to the second one with just a wired connection, nothing happens. The second computer doesn't connect, and the first computer shows no sign of anything different. I tried bridging the connections of a third computer, and connecting this computer to the second computer. This worked (third computer bridged the wireless to the second computer). Thus, the problem must be with the first (Win 7) computer. However, I have no idea what the problem could be. All Internet Connection Sharing is turned off. Homegroup is disabled (it was originally enabled, I thought that might be a problem, so I disabled it). Also, I had VMWare fusion installed, and that created extra items in the "This connection uses the following items" box in the properties dialog. Thinking this might be causing issues, I uninstalled that too. Still, with everything I tried, I can't get it to work. Any suggestions? Edit: Another thing I noticed that might be worth mentioning: The network icon in the Win7 taskbar has a red X on it that means it's not connected, but when I click the icon, it says connected next to my wireless connection, and I am able to access the internet.

• How to choose which network connection provides the default gateway in Windows XP

  I have a laptop with an integrated NIC and a WiFi connection. Both the wired and wireless networks I am using can access the Internet. Win XP is routing all traffic through the wireless network. I want to force it to route everything through the wired network when it is available (i.e. when I am sitting at my desk with the laptop docked) and through the wireless when that is the only option (i.e. when I have undocked my laptop and carried it to a conference room, or if I am out of the office working on a different WiFi network). The wireless connection cannot be established until after I am logged into Windows, so it's always the second network to become available to the OS. I have manually overridden the metric values in the TCP/IP configurations so that the NIC has metric 10 and the WiFi has metric 20. However, Windows is still picking the WiFi adapter's address as the Default Gateway, so this isn't helping. If I manually disable and re-enable the WiFi adapter, then it will switch the default gateway to the wired network and stay that way until I shutdown Windows. How can I tell Windows XP not to replace the default gateway when the WiFi connection is first enabled?

  It's sort of related to this particular question, but that one is on Mac. I am looking for similar solution on Windows 7. I have 2 network connections: (Connection A) Wireless terminal connecting to ISP A (3G / EVDO internet provider) (Connection B) Broadband wired connection connecting to ISP B (Cable internet provider) Both has access to the internet. When I try connecting to a website and checking the networking tab on my Task Manager, I only see the network traffic being routed to only Connection A. Is there a way to make the computer to utilize both network (in a sense using all the bandwidth available from both the Cable ISP and the 3G / EVDO ISP) at the same time? If so, what do I need to do to set this up ... on Windows 7? I was recently using a Linksys WRT54G Router with DD-WRT on it, and a couple comparable Linksys-G PCI cards for connectivity but decided to upgrade hoping it would help with my performance issues. The computers in my house are connected as follows: Comcast Business Class Commercial 25mbps/10mbps (Verified with SpeakEasy and Speedtest.net) D-Link DGL-4500 Wireless N Router Windows 7x64 - D-Link DWA-552 Wireless-N Windows 7x64 - D-Link DWA-552 Wireless-N Mac Mini 10.6.2 - AirPort Extreme N Playstation 3, Hard Wired Xbox 360, Hard Wired Essentially the problem is very specific. Web browsing and uploading/downloading files from the internet is fine, more than fine. But if I want to say, Stream a video from one of my Windows 7 computers to my PS3, or copy a large video file between either of the PC's or the Mac, I get a consistent 500-900Kbps throughput at the high end. If I open my network browser, or try to browse my homegroup the response time is horrible. Both of my Windows computers are showing Strong wireless signals with a connection speed of 300Mbps. I know I can never expect to achieve anything near those speeds, but 500Kbps? Here is what I have tried so far: Enabled Single mode N-only and N/G Only on router WPA2 with AES Encrpytion Disabled "Remote Differential Compression" in Windows 7 Disabled TCP "Auto-Tuning" Used other software for file copies such as "Teracopy" I am at the end of my rope. Unfortunately I live in a 75 year old home with plaster walls, so hard-wiring my entire house isn't really an option I can handle right now. Any ideas to help me get decent speed when transferring files across my network would be greatly appreciated.

• Failure to obtain IP with ARP over Wi-Fi with personal Wi-Fi router in client mode

  I'm trying to connect a Samsung TV to the Internet using a TL-MR3020 personal wireless router in client mode. The TV fails to connect to the network. It sees the ethernet cable connected though. Here's my network topology: Here's what I've captured with Wireshark filtering for ARP (eth.type == 0x0806): It appears the TV fails to get the IP of the gateway (DSL modem/router) for some reason. One thing I've noticed is that the source MAC for the ARP requests coming from the TV is the MAC of the Portable wireless router (that is cd:89:00), not the TV itself and the modem sends the responses to that MAC (I'm not an expert and don't know if its okay or it may make the TV fail to get the requested IP). Also I'm able to ping the TV from the DSL router (through the telnet interface) and the router has an entry in its MAC table for the TV's IP with the Portable wireless router's MAC (that is cd:89:00). If I'm able to ping the TV I suppose it should know the router's MAC to respond to the ping, but then why these continuous ARP requests... I've also tried to connect my desktop trough this Portable wireless router the same way I'm trying to connect the TV and it works fine, I can set the DSL Modem's IP as the default gateway on the desktop's NIC and connect to the Internet. The TV can connect to the Internet when connected to the DSL Router with a wired connection. Any suggestions on what may be the cause of the problem / how to further debug it are welcome. Thanks!

  I am new to networking and I have a measurement device (D) that periodically sends all its readings over few UDP multicast sockets (with different multicast IP addresses and different port numbers). That device even listens to a TCP socket simultaneously to modify its configuration on port 7234. Since the device has just a Ethernet interface for communication and I want to make it work wireless, I decided to use a very small wireless open-wrt based router that attaches to the device (D) and redirect/forward all the network traffic(Both UDP/TCP) to the router wireless interface. In order to simplify the problem assume that the Device (D) establishes following sockets (at the same time) UM_SOCK1: UDP mcast socket on 239.1.2.3 port# 50620 UM_SOCK2: UDP mcast socket on 239.1.2.4 port# 50640 TC_SOCK3: TCP DHCP/STATIC ip address 192.168.1.200 port 7234 And (D) is connected to Open-Wrt router (R) via interface en01 (Ethernet) the router has it own wireless interface on (wlan0) I want all the traffic from interface pass through wlan01 and vice versa (bi-directional) en01 <---- wlan01 What would be the minimum iptables or ... commands that I need to make this possible? Even I am wondering if traffic directing can be made easier like if the direction is not going to be based on IP addresses(not desired if the device is connected via DHCP) I would rather redirection to be Interface(en0) based or on MAC address (The best solution since my device has unique MAC address)? • A switch and router between the printer and PC that want to print but cannot

  IP 192.168.1.5 has a wireless connection to a Linksys router (192.168.1.1) which then is connected to a switch. The switch is connected to a server (192.168.0.2). My printer has IP address of 192.168.0.8. Internet connection is fine on 192.168.1.5. Problem 1: IP 192.168.1.5 can not print using printer 192.168.0.8. Problem 2: IP 192.168.1.2 can not access a shared folder on the the server. The reason for connecting this way is that, the server does not release wireless signal. In order to get wireless signal the Router is connected to the switch. The server is a computer server that only has one outgoing LAN port. Plus, due to inconvinience physical locations, I do not have option to change the physical locations and the way it is connected already. I just want the labtops that only have wireless connection to communicate with the printer and the server. I have tried to change the router IP address to 192.168.0.x like the server and printer. It caused problem for the laptop. The router no longer release internet signals. The router does have IP address from the server 192.168.0.5.

  I'm using the AutoCompleteExtender from the AJAX control toolkit on my aspx page - I have it wired up to a WCF service that is returning a string array and everything works happily. If I change my service definition to include a demand for the caller to be authenticated, like so: <OperationContract(), PrincipalPermission(SecurityAction.Demand, Authenticated:=True)> _ Public Function GetLookupValues(ByVal prefixText As String, ByVal count As Integer, ByVal contextKey As String) As String() Then the autocomplete extender stops working, and I get an authentication error in the service. The service is set up to use ASPNetCompatibility mode, and I was hoping that the extender would pass the authentication credentials for my logged in user - does anyone know how to make this work?

• Why is my CalendarExtender getting overlapped when rendered?

  I'm working on a .NET web application and I'm using a CalendarExtender control within it to have the user specify a date. For some reason, when I click the icon to display the calendar, the background seems to be transparent, shown below: I'm using the extender on other pages and do not run into this issue. I'm not sure if it is worth mentioning, but the calendar is nested within a panel that has a rounded corner extender attached to it, as well as the panel below it (where the "From" is overlapping). Within that panel, I do have a div layout setup to create two columns. EDIT: The other thing to note here is that the section that has the name and "placeholders" for nickname are all ASP.NET label controls, if that matters.

• Our wi-fi at work is ridiculously slow, will adding more range extenders improve it?

  At work, we have two wireless networks (e.g., Work1 Work2); the Work2 is used downstairs and Work1 is used upstairs. However, both are notoriously slow. The connection is better when we are wired in, but unfortunately due to our building being very old and our company growing very fast, most employees are not seated near the walls where the ethernet cables are. I had Cox, our ISP, run a bandwidth utilization test and it doesn't seem like we are capping out on upstream/downstream, which leads me to believe that it's strictly an issue with the wireless networks (which were implemented before I got there). The wireless networks are both Apple Airport Extremes. Is there anything I can do to improve the situation for everyone? Speeds are extremely slow, and sometimes drops out.

  I have 4 computers all running Windows 7 networked in a Work group through Billion 7404vgp-m wireless router.All drivers and firmware for wireless adapters and router are up to date. Windows Firewall and Defender disabled.Disconnected ipv6. Running Nod 32 anti virus software. All have own static IP address 192.XXX.X.XXX. When I Reset the router all computers have Internet and LAN access for about 1 hour and then they will lose the LAN connection but maintain Internet connection. Resetting wireless adapters or restarting computers does nothing to fix this but resetting router will. What is causing this and how do I fix it. Thanks Di

  I just changed over my modem to bridged mode, and changed my wireless router to PPPoE. My PC IP address is reserved and forwards port 80 to my computer's IP address based on my MAC address. I have a problem, however. I cannot access my local webserver by public IP address or my router 192.168.0.1 wirelessly from any other computer or iPad. I can, however, connect by this PC which is connected to the wireless router via ethernet. Via wireless, it says it cannot connect, however DNS addresses work (e.g. google.com, etc.) Any ideas?

• Running bridged-networking vmware player on a Linux machine with 2 interfaces

  I have got a laptop running Arch Linux with 2 interfaces: wireless (wlan0) and ethernet (eth0). I use wlan0 to access internet (static IP, networking is configured using netcfg), and I connect a second PC to the eth0. Now, whenever I start vmware player (v. 4.0.4), it chooses wlan0 to connect its bridged virtual NIC to, but I need it to connect to eth0 (I want my guest machine to be able to talk to the second physical PC on eth0). So, I disable the wlan0 interface (netcfg -d wireless) and restart vmware. Now, it connects to eth0, and everything works fine; I can ping the host PC from the virtual one, and I can ping the virtual PC from the second physical PC connected to eth0. Then, if I try to reenable the wlan0 interface (netcfg -u wireless), all of the connectivity between the host and the guest (and between the second physical PC and the guest) gets lost, until I disable wlan0 again. Can someone please give me a hint on what's going on?
