• ATI proprietary driver performance?

  I'm about to (at least, want to..) buy a laptop with an ATI Radeon HD 4250, and I haven't a good opinion on ATI's drivers. How is the actual performance of the open/proprietary driver (currently I have nVidia, and I'm very satisfied)? The intended use for the laptop is: watching videos, programming in Java/PHP/maybe Qt... but, I like to know if Compiz runs well. Yes, I'm a hardcore (?) programmer that uses Compiz. :P Someone has this GPU? Experiences? Thoughts? Thanks! :D

• Wireless driver - how to load manufacturer's STA file (Ralink 3290)

  Caution: I'm a newb. Hardware: Giada i35G, cedar trail atom with nvidia gf119, railtek ethernet and Ralink 3290 for wireless. Already accomplished: Installed Ubuntu 12.10, loaded GPU drivers and redirected sound out through GPU card to HDMI. Ethernet works like a charm. Issue: Can't get my wireless up and running. There seems to be no package to which I can simply run a sudo get-aspt install ... I found the corresponding Linux driver from the manufacturer's site, but I have not managed to find out what to with the file. Here's the manufacturers site: http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support/support.php?sn=501 I get a file with the following name: \2012_0508_RT3290_Linux_STA_v2.6.0.0.bz2 I hope somebody might be able to tell me what to do next.   I learned at the University some steps to model a database: Model the problem using the Extended Entity-Relationship Model. Extract the functional dependencies Apply some algorithms to normalize the database (3NF or Boyce-Codd) Create the database I'm studying Computer Science and since I received that course I'm wondering if I always need to do those steps when creating a complex database for an specified problem. For example, do PHP / .NET / .. programmers always do that? or there are some tools to simplify that process, maybe using another way of represent the problem instead of the EERM?

  Does anybody know how O'Reilly chooses topics to publish? For some reason, I don't see how it can be based on demand. The reason, I ask, is because they haven't published a Delphi book in almost 12 years and Object Pascal is at least as esoteric as Erlang and as practical as PHP and as robust as C++. So, maybe someone knows what rationale is behind O'Reilly's publishing methodology or what it is supposed to tell us about the relative popularity or usefulness of any given language or programming technique? • LTSP: flash plugin crashes after updates

  I am running an alternate install 64 bit Ubuntu 12.04 with ltsp-server-standalone. I recently ran a few updates, including adding wine from the repos, adding Medibuntu, and adding google earth, all on the server, which runs as a user workstation. Before the updates, the flash plugin ran fine in thin clients. However, it now crashes. No problem with running the flash plugin on the server / workstation. I have since followed the LTSPManual pdf to copy over my sources list, add Medibuntu in the chroot, update and upgrade, and then update the image, but the flash plugin still crashes. • Blogging platform for shared hosting?

  First of all, this is not for flame wars. So, please do not bash some blogging platform :P I have a shared hosting account. I want to setup a blog on it. Now, the thing is that as it is shared hosting, I do not have as much bandwidth as some expensive hosting. I have tried using Wordpress with the caching plugins configured. It still does not seem to speed it much. Also if I create a simple PHP website, the speed is fine. Can someone suggest me some lightweight platform?

• 301 redirect bulk aspx URLs on IIS

  We recently relaunched an old ASPX site as a new Drupal site on the same domain. No 301 redirect was implemented. I have outputted a list of 1000 URLs that need to be 301 redirected. Most of the URLs are the results of search queries that were committed on the website. I.E.: http://www.mysite.com/electronics/CommunityDetails.aspx?FirstLetter=%&ID=444 We are running a Drupal site on IIS using a PHP plugin. Is there a way I can wild card a redirect of all ASPX pages? I know I can do it with .htaccess but that doesn't apply here. Any suggestions appreciated.

• Step-by-step to run a midi keyboard input device? 12.04

  I have a Korg Nanokey, and I'd like to make it produce sound in ubuntu. I've read that means I should be using Rosegarden, and that Rosegarden uses JACK, but does not install it. (Although checking out Ubuntu Software Center, apparently some components of JACK are installed by default?) I understand there can be a lot of work setting up JACK without it fighting the default sound server. Can someone give me a step-by-step method for what I need to do to plug in my midi machine and hear music when I press keys as simply as possible (without messing up pulseaudio, ie, so I can still access Skype and ordinary desktop stuff)? I'm fine installing JACK, but I'd like to sandbox it a little if it has the chance of messing up regular desktop. • Mobile redirect strategy

  Looking for help on deciding how to redirect users to a mobile optimized version of my site (m.mysite.com). Looking at two methods: Server configuration (.htaccess or even varnish) Webapp (php) The problem I see with #1 is with the "view full site" link on the mobile site. If a user clicks that link and they go to mysite.com won't the server just redirect them back to m.mysite.com? For #2 I could create a cookie that is checked in addition to the user agent. Any suggestions/comments? Is there a better way to "remember" if the user clicked "visit full site"? Thanks, Kevin

  I want to build a TCG for mobile devices that is multiplayer over the web (not local wifi or bluetooth). As a player plays cards I want the second player to see what is being played in "real time" (within a few seconds). Only one player can play at a time. Server requirements: 1) Continuously listens for input from Player 1 2) As it receives input from Player 1, sends the message to Player 2 I know some PHP, but it seems like unless I had a loop that continued until I broke it (seems like a bad idea) the script would just receive one input and quit. On the mobile side I know I can open sockets using various frameworks, but what language allows a "stream-like" behavior that continuously listens/sends messages on the server? Or if I'm missing something, what would be the best practice here?

  Hi, I know some people have asked about getting back into programming after a break and this is a potential duplicate. I just am in a position where I can go back to school in Stat/Applied Math. But I'm very worried about the impact it will have on my career and ability to find a job afterwards. I have 3 years experience in .NET on top of a couple of years in PHP. Right now, I'm a senior software engineer. Do you think taking two years off to do math is going to dramatically hurt my marketability?

  for work I need to get a a new and cheap graphics card for a dual boot machine: windows xp/ubuntu 12.04 LTS. The only requirements I have are: it should work 'flawlessly' in ubuntu (proprietary drivers are ok) it should handle Guild Wars 2 & League of Legends in windows xp (this is really the top priority as we need to be able to play at work :) - yes I have a cool job) I know nothing about graphics cards (and it seems to be a jungle out there).   I work at a small Web Dev firm, and have been handling all the PHP/MySQL/etc. for a while. I'm looking at improving our practices to allow for easier collaboration as we grow. Some things I have in mind are: Implementing a versioning system (source control) Coding standards for the team (unless mandated by a certain framework, etc.) Enforcing a common directory structure for our Desktops (for backup purposes, etc.) Web-based task/project/time/file/password/contact management and collaboration app(we've tried a bunch; I may just create one) What do more experienced developers view as necessary first steps in this area? Do you recommend any books? One thing to consider is that the bulk of our daily tasks involve maintenance and adding minor functionality rather than new projects, and the team size will be between 3 and 5. I just found a related question about teams that will be expanding from a solo developer.

  I have some experience in developing with Java, Javascript and PHP. I am reading Microsoft Visual C# 2010 Step by Step which I feel it is a very good book on introducing you to the C# language. I seem to be having problems in understanding the static keyword. From what I understand this far if a class is declared static all methods and variable have to be static. The main method always is a static method so in the class that the main method exists all variables and methods are declared static if you have to call them in the main method. Also I have noticed that in order to call a static method from another class you do not need to create an object of that you can use the class name. What are the advantages of declaring static variables and methods? When should I declare static variable and methods?

• Java doesn't show up in firefox plugins

  I've just installed the newest java, because firefox blocks the old version. I used the tutorial from http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/index.php/Java_Install Because I had some trouble once, I knew that there are multiple library folders, so I linked into all mozilla plugin folders that there are. /root/.mozilla/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ /usr/lib/firefox-addons /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins java -version returns java version "1.7.0_07" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_07-b10) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.3-b01, mixed mode) But when I go to firefox plugins, it's not listed. What do I need to do, so that firefox recognizes java?
