• How to pass data between pages without sessions in ASP.net MVC

  Hello All: I have one application in which I want to pass data between Pages (Views) without sessions. Actually I want to apply some settings to all the pages using query string. For example if my link is like "http://example.com?data=test1", then I want to append this query string to all the link there after and if there is no query string then normal flow. I was thinking if there is any way that if we get the query string in any link for the web application then some application level user specific property can be set which can be used for subsequent pages. • Maintaining ISAPI Rewrite Path with the ASP.NET tilde (~)

  My team is upgrading from ASP.NET 3.5 to ASP.NET 4.0. We are currently using Helicon ISAPI Rewrite to map http://localhost/<account-name>/default.aspx to http://localhost/<virtual-directory>/default.aspx?AccountName=<account-name> where <account-name> is a query string variable and <virtual-directory> is a virtual directory (naturally). Before the upgrade the tilde (~) resolved to http://localhost/<account-name>/... (which I want it to do) and after the upgrade the tilde resolves to http://localhost/<virtual-directory>/... which results in an error because the <account-name> query string is required. I'd like to avoid going down the road of replacing everything with relative paths because there are several features in our system that use the entire URL instead of just the relative path. For what it's worth I'm using IIS7 in Windows 7, Visual Studio 2010 with ASP.NET 4.0 and the 64 bit Helicon ISAPI Rewrite. If I switch back to the ASP.NET 3.5 version then it still works fine (leading me to believe nothing changed in IIS unless it's within the 4.0 app pool - when I switch back and forth between 3.5 and 4.0 I have to change the app pool in IIS). • Java Web Service - Faulty Services - ClassNotFound Exception

  My Project has 2 java files (A.java and B.java in same package). A.java uses methods in B.java. And, an external jar has been added in the project build path. In order to create a web service (bottom up) from the class, I created a new Dynamic Web Project in Eclipse with axis2 as the runtime platform, and imported A.java and B.java source files. Next, since all my methods that need to be exposed are contained in A.java, I right click on it and created web service using the standard settings. When I deploy the web service on my apache, I get "Fault Service" and a few ClassNotFound Exceptions for some of the classes in my external jar file (I have already imported it as an external jar). Does the external jar needs to be imported in another way?

• MVC's Html.DropDownList and "There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key '...'

  ASP.NET MVC's HtmlHelper extension methods take out a lot of the HTML-by-hand drudgery to which MVC re-introduced us former WebForms programmers. Another thing to which MVC re-introduced us is poor documentation, after the excellent documentation for most of the rest of ASP.NET and the .NET Framework which I now realize I'd taken for granted. I'd come to regard using HtmlHelper methods instead of writing HTML by hand as a best practice. When I upgraded a project from MVC 3 to MVC 4, several hidden fields with boolean values broke, because MVC 3 called ToString() on those values implicitly, and MVC 4 threw an exception until you called ToString() explicitly. Fields that used HtmlHelper weren't affected. I then went through dozens of views and manually replaced hidden inputs that had been coded by hand with Html.Hidden calls. So for a dropdown list I was rendering on the initial page as empty, then populating via JavaScript after an AJAX call, I tried to use a HtmlHelper method: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown") which threw an exception: System.InvalidOperationException: There is no ViewData item of type 'IEnumerable<SelectListItem>' that has the key 'myDropdown'. That's funny--I made no indication I wanted to use ViewData. Why was it looking there? Just render an empty select list for me. When I populated the list with items, it worked, but I didn't want to do that: @Html.DropDownList("myDropdown", new List<SelectListItem>() { new SelectListItem() { Text = "", Value = "" } }) I removed this dummy item in JavaScript after the AJAX call, so this worked fine, but I shouldn't have to give it a list with a dummy item when what I really want is an empty select. A bit of research with JetBrains dotPeek (helpfully recommended by Scott Hanselman) revealed the problem. Html.DropDownList requires some sort of data to render or it throws an error. The documentation hints at this but doesn't make it very clear. Behind the scenes, it checks if you've provided the DropDownList method any data. If you haven't, it looks in ViewData. If it's not there, you get the exception above. In my case, the helper wasn't doing much for me anyway, so I reverted to writing the HTML by hand (I ain't scared), and amended my best practice: When an HTML control has an associated HtmlHelper method and you're populating that control with data on the initial view, use the HtmlHelper method instead of writing by hand.

• How to instrument existing ASP.NET application?

  We have several highly complex ASP.NET web applications that are used internally by hundreds of users. We are trying to figure out which areas of the applications to invest in to improve functionality, but we aren't sure which screens/features are more heavily used. So, ideally, I'd like to find a way to add a layer of instrumentation to the applications that gathers metrics on which buttons are being clicked, which text boxes are being used, etc. Are there any products / open source apps out there that will do this sort of instrumentation for ASP.NET? Obviously I could do it myself manually by going into the code and injecting logging statements everywhere but this would be a significant amount of work that will be hard to accomplish.

  The ASP.NET Routing framework allows developers to decouple the URL of a resource from the physical file on the web server. Specifically, the developer defines routing rules, which map URL patterns to a class or ASP.NET page that generates the content. • ASP.NET MVC 2 RC2 Model Binding with NVARCHAR NOT NULL column

  I have a database column defined as NVARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL DEFAULT(N'') - in other words, a non-nullable text column with a default value of blank. I have a model class generated by the Linq-to-SQL Classes designer, which correctly identifies the property as not nullable. I have a TextAreaFor in my view for that property. I'm using UpdateModel in my controller to fetch the value from the form and populate the model object. If I view the web page and leave the text area blank, UpdateModel insists on setting the property to NULL instead of empty string. (Even if I set the value to blank in code prior to calling UpdateModel, it still overwrites that with NULL). Which, of course, causes the subsequent database update to fail. I could check all such properties for NULL after calling UpdateModel, but that seems ridiculous - surely there must be a better way? Please don't tell me I need a custom model binder for such a simple scenario...!

• Why do Asp.net timers/updatepanels leak memory and can it be fixed/worked around?

  I have built a suite of internal websites for our company to manage some of our processes. I have been noticing that these pages have massive memory leaks that cause the pages to be using well over 150mb of memory, which is ridiculous for a webpage that consists of a single form and a GridView that is displaying 7-10 rows of data at a time, sometimes with the data not changing for a whole day. This data does need to be refreshed on a semi-regular basis so that we always see the latest results and can act on them. After some testing it appears that the memory leak is extremely easy to reproduce, and very noticeable. I created a page with the following asp.net markup: <body> <form id="form1" runat="server"> <div> <asp:scriptmanager ID="Scriptmanager1" runat="server"></asp:scriptmanager> <asp:Timer ID="timer1" runat="server" Interval="1000" /> <asp:UpdatePanel ID="UpdatePanel1" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> </div> </form> </body> There is absolutely no code behind for this. This is the entirety of the page. Running this site in Chrome shows the memory usage shoot up to 25 megs in the span of 20-30 seconds. Leaving it running for a few minutes makes the memory go up to the 70 megs and such. Am I using timers and update panels wrong, or is this a pure Asp.net issue with no work around?

  Background I have a GoDaddy shared Windows hosting plan and I'm running into a small issue with multiple domains. Many people have previously reported such an issue, but I am not interested in trying to resolve that problem altogether; all I want to accomplish is to change the format of my ActionLinks. Issue Let's say the domain that is mapped to my root hosting directory is example.com. GoDaddy forces mapping of other domains to subdirectories of the root. For example, my second domain, example1.com, is mapped to example.com/example1. I uploaded my ASP.NET MVC site to such a subdirectory, only to find that ActionLinks that are for navigation have the following format: http://example1.com/example1/Controller/Action In other words, even when I use the domain that is mapped to the subdirectory, the subdirectory is still used in the URL. However, I noticed that I can also access the same path by going to: http://example1.com/Controller/Action (leaving out the subdirectory) What I want to achieve I want to have my ActionLinks automatically drop the subdirectory, as it is not required. Is this possible without changing the ActionLinks into plain-old URLs?

• Providing or Filtering assemblies when registering areas for an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 application

  I have a large application that currently exists as a hybrid of WebForms and MVC 2.0. Startup of my application is dreadful, and the culprit is primarily because of the AreaRegistration.RegisterAllAreas call. More specifically, that it is using the System.Web. Compilation.BuildManager.GetReferencedAssemblies to enumerate all types in assemblies directly referenced by the application and test them to see if they derive from AreaRegistration. Unfortunately, I have a number of third-party assemblies that happen to be quite extensive, so this initial load can be pretty bad. I'd have much better results if I could tell it which assemblies to look for AreaRegistrations, or even register areas manually for the time being. I can gather up all the internals of AreaRegistration to create and invoke the registration, but I'm just curious if others have had and worked around this issue.

• ASP.NET Ajax - Asynch request has separate session???

  We are writing a search application that saves the search criteria to session state and executes the search inside of an asp.net updatepanel. Sometimes when we execute multiple searches successively the 2nd or 3rd search will sometimes return results from the first set of search criteria. Example: our first search we do a look up on "John Smith" - John Smith results are displayed. The second search we do a look up on "Bob Jones" - John Smith results are displayed. We save all of the search criteria in session state as I said, and read it from session state inside of the ajax request to format the DB query. When we put break points in VS everything behaves as normal, but without them we get the original search criteria and results. My guess is because they are saved in session, that the ajax request somehow gets its own session and saves the criteria to that, and then retrieves the criteria from that session every time, but the non-async stuff is able to see when the criteria is modified and saves the changes to state accordingly, but because they are from two different sessions there is a disparity in what is saved and read. EDIT::: To elaborate more, there was a suggestion of appending the search criteria to the query string which normally is good practice and I agree thats how it should be but following our requirements I don't see it as being viable. They want it so the user fills out the input controls hits search and there is no page reload, the only thing they see is a progress indicator on the page, and they still have the ability to navigate and use other features on the current page. If I were to add criteria to the query string I would have to do another request causing the whole page to load, which depending on the search criteria can take a really long time. This is why we are using an ajax call to perform the search and why we aren't causing another full page request..... I hope this clarifies the situation.

  Using ASP MVC, I have set up a webpage for localhost/Dinner/100 to show the dinner details for dinner with ID = 100. On the page, there is a dropdown that shows Dinner 1, Dinner 2, etc. The user should select the dinner of interest (Dinner 2, ID = 102) off the form and press submit. The page should refresh and show the url: localhost/Dinner/102, and show the details of dinner 2. My code is working except for the url. During this, my url shows localhost/Dinner/100 even though it is correctly displaying the details of Dinner 2 (ID = 102). All is fine except of when code is falling with exception i see Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.3053; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.3053 but at project properties 3.5 is selected. what is wrong and how to fix it? ps: i'm running code directly from VS2008 (by pressing ctrl+f5) without any dedicated IIS.

  What Java web framework out there best supports a role of "web UI designer", that is, lets you: Use popular web design tools (xhtml validators, css editors, what have you) on your views/pages View changes without running on a server Rapidly prototype different UI options Supports a (somewhatly) clean separation between "developer" and "designer" (terminology intentionally vague) We, like many others, have found these capabilities sorely lacking in our large, legacy Struts 1.x apps that use lots of JSP fragments and includes. We've decided to port our apps to a JSR-168/268 portal environment, but we have not decided on what Java web framework will power the portlets. We're open to any kind (action-based, component-based, etc) and a key criterion is how well it supports the role described above. I'm intrigued by Tapestry which claims that its views are XHTML compliant pages (that simply have extra Tapestry-specific attributes added onto them to be processed at runtime). This sounds like it would play well with a web ui designer's toolkit. However, I'd like to know if this is what actually happens in the real world, or if compromises are necessary. Of course, if there's something much better than Tapestry, I'd love to hear about it!

• Looking for Windows shared web hosting with PHP support

  I'm looking for Windows based shared web hosting which supports multiple hosted web sites (multiple domains). Supported technologies should contain: ASP.NET 4, ASP.NET MVC IIS 7 MS SQL 2008 PHP, MySQL It is for my hobby projects so it should not be too expensive. I tried GoDaddy's Windows Deluxe hosting but the experience is very bad and I want to move elsewhere. WordPress hosted on GoDaddy's Windows hosting is unloaded every few minutes and next request takes around 20s to complete. Following request to empty site takes around 3s to complete. Even request for RSS wich transfers 1.2KB takes several seconds. The delay happens in PHP processing because static content is served within 200ms. It helped to migrate to Linux hosting (all requests are served under 1s) but Linux hosting is not what I'm looking for.

Nevertheless, it does not work when error occurs on application starting because request and response objects are always null. Next, I try to solve this question by setting default redirect in custom errors like the following code. <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="Scripts/ApplicationError.htm"></customErrors> Unfortunately, it does not work because when application receive redirected request, it try to start application again and it throw exception again. How do to solve this problem? Alternatively, Do you have other idea for handling this error. Thanks, PS. The main reason for creating this handler because I want to display error when application cannot connect to other service like database for caching data on application start.

  In this posting I will show you how one stupid decision may turn developers life to hell. There is a project where bunch of complex applications exchange data frequently and it is very hard to change something without additional expenses. Well, one analyst thought that string is silver bullet of web services. Read what happened. Bad bad mistake In the early stages of integration project there was analyst who also established architecture and technical design for web services. There was one very bad mistake this analyst made: All data must be converted to strings before exchange! Yes, that’s correct, this was the requirement. All integers, decimals and dates are coming in and going out as strings. There was also explanation for this requirement: This way we can avoid data type conversion errors! Well, this guy works somewhere else already and I hope he works in some burger restaurant – far away from computers. Consequences If you first look at this requirement it may seem like little annoying piece of crap you can easily survive. But let’s see the real consequences one stupid decision can cause: hell load of data conversions are done by receiving applications and SSIS packages, SSIS packages are not error prone and they depend heavily on strings they get from different services, there are more than one format per type that is used in different services, for larger amounts of data all these conversion tasks slow down the work of integration packages, practically all developers have been in hurry with some SSIS import tasks and some fields that are not used in different calculations in SSAS cube are imported without data conversions (by example, some prices are strings in format “1.021 $”). The most painful problem for developers is the part of data conversions because they don’t expect that there is such a stupid requirement stated and therefore they are not able to estimate the time their tasks take on these web services. Also developers must be prepared for cases when suddenly some service sends data that is not in acceptable format and they must solve the problems ASAP. This puts unexpected load on developers and they are not very happy with it because they can’t understand why they have to live with this horror if it is possible to fix.
