• Should XML be used server-side, and JSON client-side?

  As a personal project, I'm making an AJAX chatroom application using XML as a server-side storage, and JSON for client-side processing. Here's how it works: AJAX Request gets sent to PHP using GET (chat messages/logins/logouts) PHP fetches/modifies the XML file on the server PHP encodes the XML into JSON, and sends back JSON response Javascript handles JSON information (chat messages/logins/logouts) I want to eventually make this a larger-scale chatroom application. Therefore, I want to make sure it's fast and efficient. Was this a bad design choice? In this case, is switching between XML and JSON ok, or is there a better way?

• Real time web site using PHP or ASP.NET

  Hey Guys, I'm looking for a way to put real time features into my web site. The idea is asynchronous communication between 2 people - like a chat session. If I use the chat example - I'd like the second person to know that the first one has sent a message to him, without refreshing or doing something active on the web page. Polling is not a good idea here - so is there any other solution? the back-end could be ASP.NET or PHP (ASP.NET preferred). Help would be much appreciated, Thanks, Roman

  I am going for an interview day after tomorrow where i will be asked vaious questions related to TCP/IP and UDP. As of now i have prepared theoritical knowledge about it. But now I am looking up for gaining some practicle knowledge related to how it works in a network. What all is going in vaious .NET classes. I want to create a very small application like a chat or something that can make me all these concepts very much clear. Could you please suggest some questions related to TCP/IP that you generally ask or that you might have faced. How communication is going from server to client. Right now I am studying TcpClient, TcpListener and UdpClient Class but I want to implement all of them so as to get aware about its working. Is Chat application a Tcp/IP application ? I would appreciate your help.

• Can run Javascript but not jQuery?

  I'm running into a strange problem - I tried running a basic function in JS and jQuery, and while the former worked, the latter didn't. JS - okay alert('Works'); jQuery - not okay $(document).ready({ alert('Works'); }); Here's some facts: My references to the jQuery library are correct (And pretty sure my Internet connection is steady :) I'm using a CDN - CloudFlare to be exact, but I've switched development mode on and Rocket Loader off - so all the code I've uploaded to the server is WYSIWYG (CloudFlare adds some stuff in the tags if you leave Rocket Loader on. I tried running the alert code in the head section, and elsewhere in the body tags, to no avail. What could have possibly gone wrong? • c# GUI changing a listbox from another class

  I've written a multithreaded server that uses tcplistener and a client handler class that controls input and output. I also have a GUI chat client. The chat client works fine and the console version of the server also works well. I have a start() method in the partial(?) Form class, which I run from a new thread when I click a button, that starts the TCP Listener and loops through and accepts socket requests. For every request a new ClientHandler object is created and the socket is passed to this object before being used in a new handler thread. The ClientHandler is a different class to the form and I'm having real problems writing data to the Listbox in the Form class from within the ClientHandler class. I've tried a few different ways of doing this but none of them work as they involve creating a new form class within the ClientHandler. Any help or advice on what I should be reading to help me would be really appreciated.

  We are developing an ASP.NET web application where some of the features that we will need to implement are quite standard: for example, a chat between users, a forum, etc. There are ASP.NET chats and forums components available. However, they all have a predetermined GUI and html markup that is almost impossible to change and very difficult to customize. And this is a very common situation for most controls like grids, etc.: you have very low control over the html markup that is being generated by the control. In our case, our web app will have its own web design created by a professional web designer in PhotoShop, and then it will but transformed into html markup that will then be transformed in aspx pages. We would ideally like to create the html markup for the forum and chat by ourselves, and use only the non-GUI part of the ASP.NET components. Is this approach feasible? Has anyone dealt with such approach in practice?

• How does Play recognize a particular websocket message?

  I am looking at the websocket-chat example. It unveils much, but I still cannot get something. I understand how messages are received, processed and sent on the web page side. However, Play captures websocket messages by means of the receive method of an Akka actor. In the websocket-chat, there are several cases in this method, but I don't get, how does it know which websocket message should be mapped to which case. In fact, I don't understand the path that a websocket message follows upon entering Play's domain, how is it processed and how can different message types/kinds be sent from the webpage. I have not find any info or sources related to this. Could please someone explain this or point to some kind of a good reference? UPDATE: The link to the original example.

I know the definition of a protocol, being new to this c++ programming is quite a challenging task.I am creating a Multi-threaded chat using SDL/C++, this is a learning experience for me and now i have encounter a hump in which I need to overcome but understanding it is a little more difficult than I had thought.I need to make a chat protocol of some sort, I think...but am stump. Up until this point i have been sending messages in strings of characters.Now that am improving the application to the point where clients can register and login, I need a better way to communicating with my clients and server. thank you.

  i have 2 windows: window A and window B. -window A and window B have same domain -window A and window B doesn't have any parent window. first question: -is it possible for window A to get a reference of window B? second question: -what is the most elegant way to make window A notify something to window B? (modern browser supporting HTML5 restriction is not a problem) 2 ways i am aware of doing this: -messaging by server: where window B regulary asks the server if window A has notified something -messaging by local data (HTML5): when window A wants to notify something it changes the local data, window B regulary checks the local data for any change. but the 2 ways are not so elegant. for example it would be nice to get an reference of window B and using window.postMessage() (HTML5) ultimate goal is to make something like facebook where if you open 4 facebook tabs, and chat in one tab, the chat is actualized on every facebook tab, which is neat! thanks folks!

  I have a few MP4s that i want to upload to my flickr account but they have a maximum size of 500mb as mine is only about 550 i was planing to simply split them in half then upload them, but i want to make sure all the meta data is included but it does not seem to be. • Creating a podcast feed for iTunes & BlackBerry users using WCF Syndication

   In my previous post, I showed how to create a RSS feed using WCF Syndication.  Next, I'll show how to add the additional tags needed to turn a RSS feed into an iTunes podcast.   A podcast is merely a RSS feed with some special characteristics: iTunes RSS tags.  These are additional tags beyond the standard RSS spec.  Apple has a good page on the requirements. Audio file enclosure.  This is a link to the audio file (such as mp3) hosted by your site.  Apple doesn't host the audio, they just read the meta-data from the RSS feed into their system. The SyndicationFeed class supports both AttributeExtensions & ElementExtensions to add custom tags to the RSS feeds. Once you have created your feed, you can use the Feed Validator tool to make sure it is up to spec.  Or you can use iTunes: Launch iTunes. In the Advanced menu, select Subscribe to Podcast. Enter your feed URL in the text box and click OK. After you've verified your feed is solid & good to go, you can submit it to iTunes.  Launch iTunes. In the left navigation column, click on iTunes Store to open the store. Once the store loads, click on Podcasts along the top navigation bar to go to the Podcasts page. In the right column of the Podcasts page, click on the Submit a Podcast link. Follow the instructions on the Submit a Podcast page. Here are the full instructions.  Once they have approved your podcast, it will be available within iTunes. RIM has also gotten into the podcasting business...which is great for BlackBerry users.  They accept the same enhanced-RSS feed that iTunes uses, so just create an account with them & submit the feed's URL.  It goes through a similar approval process to iTunes.  BlackBerry users must be on BlackBerry 6 OS or download the Podcast App from App World. • Ubuntu 12.04 wireless (wifi) not working, can not upgrade to 12.10, touchpad gestures not working. What to do?

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS 3 days ago and since then wireless feature and touchpad gestures are not working. Tried everything on internet but still unsuccessful. I cant upgrade to ubuntu 12.10. • Gnome shell online accounts fails connection

  i'm using ubuntu 12.04 (gnome shell) and i just setup the "online accounts" with my gmail. problem is, everytime i reboot my computer, it popups " connection to [email protected] has failed". A friend of mine talked to me in google chat and i got notified, so i guess the only part "broken" is the email. Anything i can do to fix it? would be very nice to receive mail notification there. thanks :)
