    We are two developers on the edge of starting new web product development. We are both fans of lean start-up approach and would like to practice continuous deployment. Here comes the dilemma - we are both coming from a C# / Windows background and we need to decide between: Stick to .NET and Windows, we will not waste time on learning new technologies and put all our effort in the development. Switch to Ruby on Rails and Linux which has a good reputation of fast ramp up and vast open source support. The negative side is that we will need to put a lot of effort in learning Ruby, Rails and Linux... What would you do? What other considerations should we take?

    I'm a java web developer for nearly 3 years. Always trying to learn more and be better but still I feel that the amount of knowledge is not that good as I want. The knowledge in some places still seems to be non-systematic and don't provide a very strong base to solve the problems as good as I want to do it. The example I have is my senior developer, whose solutions are always more efficient and beautiful. So, the question is rather simple and hard the same time.   • Should I be paid for time spent learning a framework?

    To give light to the situation: I am currently one of two programmers working in a small startup software company. Part of my job requires me to learn a Web development framework that I am not currently familiar with. I get paid by the hour. So the question is: Is it wholly ethical to spend multiple hours of the day reading through documentation and tutorials and be paid for this time where I am not actively developing for our product? Or should the bulk of this learning be done at home, or otherwise off hours, to allow for more full-on development of our application during the work day?

  • NAS device claims drive in a RAID is degraded but S.M.A.R.T. says it is fine

    I have a Synology DS213 with two 600GB drives in RAID 1. Last night the device reported that my second drive had become degraded and that I should replace it. When I ran a extensive S.M.A.R.T. test the results said that the drive is okay. How can I confirm that the drive is actually bad? Is there any case that the degraded drive is the good one and that it is actually the other drive that is bad?

    I'm learning web development. My main OS is windows 7 but I've used Linux and currently dual-booting with Ubuntu. My Linux knowledge however, is pretty limited. I can work with the command line on simple tasks but that's pretty much it. I don't do any shell scripting, don't know very well the most important commands, nor the system in general. I am interested in web development. Should I get myself familiarized more with Linux ? Is it a must for future job positions considering my field of interest?

  • Terminal Server 2008 not issuing Volume device CAL's

    We've a lot of Volume Licences left, but the License Server apparantly doesn't use them. Instead it issues Temporary Per Device CAL's. Which is a bit odd off course... I've been to Lenovo's website. This would be a breeze but the Device Manager lists 2 Unknown devices. How do I figure out what those are?

  • drbd block device as storage for kvm virtual machine

    Hi, everyone I've setup a drbd replication between two machines and used a drbd block device as storage for a kvm machine. Everything is running well. However I'm in doubt if this setup is ok to use. From what I've read so far on the internet, people tend to use drbd-ospf-qcow2_file as storage for their virtual machines.
