  • Facing quality issues

    A workforce management software has complex GUI (for example values in a page depends on the status (closed or open) of other pages). Only latest and near past development has test coverage. During our last release, we received lots of bugs from customer in-spite of 2 weeks of testing Sprint . We don't have dedicated test team. The developers does the unit test & User acceptance test. Every day triggers automated regression test. I am afraid the developers are not testing the entire workflow because its time consuming also not able to automate it because of its complexity. Any suggestions ?. The legacy code (15 yrs development) has less code coverage. How can I improve quality ? Note: Now not possible to hire testers to have independent test team!!

    Even though my current job is a little weird, I still consider myself to be a DBA. I didn’t start that way in IT. I came through support and into development. I loved development. There was a constant struggle to attempt to improve your code, your understanding, and, most importantly, the process of development itself. Development can be slow and tedious. Left alone, developers can simply disappear to build a project and not come back for two years, at which time they deliver it. But, maybe that software isn’t what you wanted, or it’s no longer needed, or who knows what. So developers are constantly attempting to improve their processes in order to deliver more relavent software quicker (something DBAs could learn about). I really admire it. One of the many processes that has come out of that constant striving is known as Agile. As the name implies, Agile development attempts to come up with a quick, fast turning, business aware, well, for want of a word, agile, process that is more responsive to the needs of the business. There are tons and tons of books and blogs and videos on the subject that can get you going. But, Agile isn’t easy (note, Easy is not part of the name). Agile processes can be hard. I’ve worked on multiple agile teams, some successful, some not. The two principal differences between the teams were their discipline and their knowledge of the process. Discipline, that comes from within. But knowledge, ah, well there I can help.   • How to assign correct permissions to both webserver and svn users ?

    I've an issue with files ownerships. I have a drupal website and the "files" folder needs to be owned by "www-data" in order to let the users to upload files with php. However I'm now using svn and I need all folders and files to be own by "svnuser" in order to work. So now, I guess I need to add both users to a group with proper permissions. I'm not sure what exactly to do, could you tell me what are the exact necessary steps ? thanks

But I am thinking about other countries for offshore development. Personally I would like to have here some developers onshore, but the situation here is very hard and good developers are very hard to find. So we have to develop offshore. So my question is very simple. Do you have any experience with offshore and where would be a good place for development? By the way I am at the moment very interested in Russia and Ukraine.   • SSD, AHCI and write performance

    We've started to deploy SSD drives to our developers workstations. At this moment we're having the unpleasant surprise that the systems using the new SSDs often freeze, with the HDD activity led blinking or being continuously on. Benchmarks shows read speeds around 180 MB/s, but write speeds around 5 MB/s. All developers are using Windows 7 Enterprise, 64 bit, SP1. One of our developers suggested (based on his experience) the following sequence: backup the workstation use a tool to completely erase the SSD make sure AHCI is enabled in BIOS install Windows restore from backup So far, this procedure seems to work (we're still testing, but write speed seems to be 120 MB/s). There are some questions in this context: why do we have to completely reinstall Windows? Is it possible to clean the SSD without reinstalling Windows? Is there a reliable tool? If AHCI was disabled when Windows was installed and we enable it, shouldn't this be enough to correct the write performance issue? If we have to completely erase the SSDs, does this mean the SSDs we've received were used before (SH)? I'm wondering this because the package I've got was open (I didn't think about it at that time, as I considered one of my coworkers simply took a peek inside the package). Has anyone seen a similar problem before?

  • Web hosting for multiple web sites providing system isolation

    We have a small number of projects where we expect the client will not be maintaining the installed versions of applications we install to power the site (such as Drupal). Given that an important part of security is keeping things updated, we don't want to host these projects on our Plesk-powered dedicated servers that currently host lots of our other client's websites. Our goal is to find a host where we can deploy isolated instances (be these slices, virtual servers, grid servers, etc) for each individual (or groups of 2-3) web sites as we need them. These instances would be completely separate, so that if one web site were hacked it would not impact any other site. Typical hosting requirements: Linux Apache PHP 5 MySQL Supports Drupal Ability to setup a cron task (but we don't need SSH access) Daily backups Virtualized/cloud hosting (we want to avoid shared) Pricing per site is around $25/month OS is patched automatically Some options we have considered but won't work: MediaTemple: Two major data center-wide security incidents and recent downtime foster doubt about this host's technical ability. Slicehost: This would require us to manage the entire server, which we don't want to do. Rackspace Cloud Sites (formerly Mosso): No backup options. Do you have any recommended hosting options for given these requirements?

  • Setup staging with multiple SVN

    We are a startup, setting new environments for product to be released soon. Planned server structure with planned release flow is as shown in below image It ideally have a local server (or Staging server, shown in green) in local office, without public IP address and Production Server (Red) at Amazon EC2. Both local and production server have there own SVN copy. Management here want to update production server with production SVN and without providing its access to developers (including freelancers/contract employees). So for developers, there is a Local SVN on local server. Another purpose of local SVN to keep a copy of code on local server, which is under our direct control. Although there are some technical concerns like how will code at local server will be updated from local SVN and commit on production SVN but bigger question is, is that structure correct? Major requirement remain don't provide production SVN access to developers. What are other possible options to achieve that? Another minor question, if suitable here, if above structure is correct, is it possible for a SVN checkout to get updated from one SVN (Local SVN) but commit to other (Production SVN)? If yes, How? edit An answer has been accepted but for bounty, I'm still looking for answer Is that structure correct? Its pros/Cons? Technical solution is already provided by accepted answer.

  • Email encoding on IIS7

    All emails sent from the server are displaying Cyrillic letters as weird characters, for example: Можно. Regular alphabet letters are properly rendered. I searched all across the web but was not able to find any solutions. Here is some information about the system: Dedicated server with Windows 2008 and IIS7 Application are in PHP (run as FastCGI) If of any importance, Smartermail is installed on the server The emails are sent using PHPs mail() function through a Drupal website. Encoding on that site is set up properly and there are no display issues on front end. Where is the problem? How can I make Cyrillic letters to be properly encoded? Any help is greatly appreciated.   • Is there an SSL equivelent to an ssh agent?

    Here is my situation: There are a number of developers who all need to have access to be able to install ruby gems and python eggs from a remote source. Currently, we have a server inside our firewall that hosts the gems and eggs. We now want the ability to be able to install things hosted on that server outside of our firewall. Since some of the gems and eggs that we host are proprietary I would like to somewhat lock access to that machine down, as unobtrusively as possible to the developers. My first thought was using something like ssh keys. So, I spent some time looking at SSL mutual authentication. I was able to get everything set up and working correctly, testing with curl, but the unfortunate thing was that I had to pass extra arguments to curl so it knows about the certificate, key and certificate authority. I was wondering if there is anything like the ssh agent that I can set up to provide that information automatically so that I can push the certificates and keys to the developer's machines so the developers don't have to log in or provide keys each time they try to install something. Another thing that I want to avoid is having to modify the 'gem' command and the 'pip' command to provide keys when they make the http connection. Any other suggestions that may solve this problem (not related to ssl mutual auth) are also welcome. EDIT: I've been continuing to research this and I came across stunnel. I think this may be what I'm looking for, any feedback regarding stunnel would also be great!

  • What are good systems for managing PHP/MySQL infrastructure?

    I work in a company which is about to migrate most applications from in-house custom built Java/Tomcat applications to Drupal. Due to company policies, applications and websites need to run on in-house servers. This means that we need infrastructure for Drupal (PHP/MySQL) applications. This must have been solved a million times already. I believe this is what web-hosting companies does every day. Even though we work on a much smaller scale than web-hosting companies, i assume it would make sense to look at the task as if we're going to have an internal small-scale web-hosting company. This means that the guys in IT operations could be "responsible" for "offering" web-hosting, while developers could use these "services". We have three environments; dev(elopment), test and prod(uction). It would make sense that developers could log in to a system and create/edit/delete dev and test sites as they'd like. Production sites should be available through the same system, but only available to IT ops. We need to work with clusters of web servers, meaning that an administration system should be capable of creating/editing/deleting sites across multiple servers. I know there's no "this is it" answer to my question; but what would be a good place to start to get going with this? Apart from the actual hardware, what would be a good administration system for this?

  • Apache Server with memcache, varnish and php slow request times

    My issue is that these servers are taking rather long for request about 2 seconds on average just to serve files. When we had just one server doing everything it was noticeably faster even with the same web app (Drupal 6 and Drupal 7). I want to get this number down to a reasonable level and so I need some help getting to the bottom of why the request times are so slow. This can cause the webapp to hang on post or put and generally leads to a bad user experience on my sites. PS: I am more of a server newbie so this has confounded me for quite some time. The domains: collabornation.net nptrainingworks.com (they run off the same two webservers using vhost configs) The Gear: Two Rackspace 4 Gig servers running CentOS 6.2 Final They have a mounted file system (gluster) that is used to keep files the same on both machines. They are behind a rackspace load balancer running round robin. Mysql is run using php-pdo and php-mysql as such mysql is run on another instance running memcache on that machine with phpMyAdmin located there as well. Apache version number 2.2.15-15.el6.centos.1 (httpd.x86_64) Varnish version number 3.0.2-1.el5 (varnish.x86_64) PHP version number 5.3.14-1.el6.remi (php.x86_64) Configs Linked Below Apache Conf Vhost Conf Varnish Backends Varnish Defaults Varnish Acl PHP INI Again need some help, much appreciated!
