• Why would you use data structures (ie Binary Trees, Linked Lists) in your jobs/side projects? [closed]

  It seems to me that, for everyday use, more primitive data structures like arrays get the job done just as well as a binary tree would. My question is how common is to use these structures when writing code for projects at work or projects that you pursue in your free time? I understand the better insertion time/deletion time/sorting time for certain structures but would that really matter that much if you were working with a relatively small amount of data?

• Mass audio encoder

  I have a few thousand FLAC files which I would like to transcode to OGG Vorbis, but I can't find any suitable tools for the job. To name a few I have tried so far and why they are unsuitable: oggenc is single-threaded and would require me to automate it myself, mencoder requires the input to also contain video, and abcde assumes the input is a CD. The ideal tool should be multi-threaded, and support inputing multiple files located in different directories simultaneously. CLI or GUI makes no matter. Does such a tool exist?

• Standalone URL 301 Redirect Manager [on hold]

  I'm looking for a script with a simple interface that helps me manage a large list of 301 redirects of the form: http://example.com/short ---> http://example.com/long-and-descriptive For example the following Wordpress plugin does this job, but it seems excessive to install Wordpress just for this one simple functionality. It looks like my question is similar to this closed question, but hopefully rephrased in such a way that makes it more relevant and "constructive".

• Stopping/Starting windows services

  I have four windows services which start up automatically when the machine starts. There after, I want to restart those services every 8 hours in a particular order. For eg. Stop s1,s2,s3,s4 and than restart them in some other order like s4,s3,s2,s1. The condition is that I should wait for each service to stop completely before I stop another one. I would want to write a .BAT or some script. Is it possible to define a CRON for 8 hours, this is not there in Advanced tasks ? Can I do it using windows scheduler ? Please suggest. thanks in advance.

• Windows Server 2008 scheduled tasks cannot create files

  We have a series of tasks which, when run interactively over the command line run fine creating temporary files and (importantly) logs and backups. When we schedule the task with Administrator privileges to run at the highest priority, however, no logs or temporary files are created! All the directories have read/write privileges as administrator. Has anyone else experienced this?? We are running Windows 2008 Server & the job is configured for 'Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008'. Any help would be much appreciated! OK - so we installed Z-Cron and it works perfectly.... Still a really really strange error from Windows 2008 Task Scheduler, but a solution is perhaps not quite so urgent now we have Z-Cron working!

• How to automount a Truecrypt volume before login in Windows 7?

  I have an external hard drive containing all my documents, and it is encrypted with a password via Truecrypt. I'd like my desktop computer at home to automatically mount the volume prior to my logging in (so that it can be used as my user folder) without asking me for a password. (Yes, the password can be saved in plain text on my desktop's hard drive - that's okay.) For the life of me, I can't figure out a way to do this that actually works though. Tried using the Task Scheduler to schedule a mount when the computer starts up, and it works, but the volume is only accessible by my user account after I log in. (Haven't tried every combination of users/options for the scheduled task, so maybe there's something else there I need to try.) Also tried adding a startup script for my user account that runs on login, which evidently is too late to set up the user's profile folder. Anybody ever successfully achieve this or something like it?

• Using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) for a scheduled task

  Back in Windows Server 2008 R2, when stand-alone Managed Service Accounts (sMSA) were new, they could not be used to execute scheduled tasks. In Windows Server 2012 however, there is a new type of account called the Group Managed Service Account (gMSA). This type of account is supposedly capable of launching scheduled tasks in the task scheduler on clients & member servers inside of a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain functional level. So far, I have: Established a Windows Server 2012 forest/domain Created a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA) Installed the gMSA on a Windows Server 2012 member server And currently I'm having trouble with: Setting a scheduled task to use the gMSA When I attempt to use a gMSA on a scheduled task, I get the error message that says "The object cannot be found" (paraphrased) message. My question is: How do I configure a Scheduled Task to execute using a Group Managed Service Account (gMSA)?

• ionice idle is ignored

  I have been testing the ionice command for a while and the idle (3) mode seems to be ignored in most cases. My test is to run both command at the same time: du <big folder> ionice -c 3 du <another big folder> If I check both process in iotop I see no difference in the percentage of io utilization for each process. To provide more information about the CFQ scheduler I'm using a 3.5.0 linux kernel. I started doing this test because I'm experimenting a system lag each time a daily cron job updatedb.mlocate is executed in my Ubuntu 12.10 machine. If you check the /etc/cron.daily/mlocate file you realize that the command is executed like: /usr/bin/ionice -c3 /usr/bin/updatedb.mlocate Also, the funny thing is that whenever my system for some reason starts using swap memory, the updatedb.mlocate io process is been scheduled faster than kswapd0 process, and then my system gets stuck. • Which one to select for my future career; Java, C#, Azure or Apex?

  Hi folks, This time, I am going to studying Masters in Computer Science in U.S.A after a week. I have been doing my B.Sc for the past three years and after my freshman year I started working on projects (in C# and very rarely in Java) for the past two years.(i.e while I was a second and third year student). Now I am in a college where all of the programming courses are going to be taken in Java only (using Eclipse) and I am going to stay in this college for 8 months on campus and then fully employed for two years in other companies as a CPT. I really love to work on Microsoft products because, for me, they are simple and easy to use and understand. My future plan is to work in Cloud computing and be a Cloud based business owner in the near future. Since the college is going to teach us and let us do every project in Java, I was confused which programming language to use that will help me and enhance me in my career, and of course I wanted to select the one I liked to do everytime. I also heard a lot about Azure (Microsoft’s ) and Apex (Salesforce.com’s cloud computing programming language). Would you please give me your advice and recommendation based on my situation? Should I have to study only Java, or should I have to study C# or Azure beside Java on my own? The reason I asked this is because, since I have no clue how Azure works and how long it will take me to know the language, I am really confused which one to select (Java Vs C# and Azure Vs Apex or if there is any popular and mostly used Cloud Computing langauge). Do you think I can get a job in cloud computing if I study Azure or Apex by my own without experience? There is also one issue I want to consider which is a short term issue is. i.e Salary. Since I have to pay my student loan, I also need to get a good job which will let me pay my loan within two years. But, as I said, my long term plan is, get experience in Cloud Computing (from programming to administrative part,i.e every area of cloud computing) and then have my own business may be within 5-10 years. • mysql does not start properly

  Hi I am using XAMPP on Windows XP. Since I changed the version from 1.73 to 1.77 MySQL does not start properly. That means that the status says, it is started, but the safety check says it is not . Because of that I cannot set any password, which is unacceptable. Any idea?
