• Actionscript 3 reflection class questions

Let´s say I have a moviclip named “ref_mc”, to add a reflection I use: import com.pixelfumes.reflect.*; var r1:Reflect = new Reflect({mc:ref_mc, alpha:50, ratio:50, distance:0, updateTime:0, reflectionDropoff:1}); Now, the questions: 1) How do I update the parameters for the reflection r1 after it is created? 2) Is there a way to check whether the movieclip “ref_mc” already has a reflection? 3) Anyone has the .fla for the example with bars adjustments and code sample shown on the page (it is not on the download .zip)?   Hi, I'm trying to add a listener for the stop event in the word press audio player but usage seems to be undocumented. I'm hoping someone who knows a little flash can look at the code and tell me how it works: In the code at http://tools.assembla.com/1pixelout/browser/audio-player/trunk/source/classes/Application.as I see a snippet with this: ExternalInterface.call("AudioPlayer.onStop", _options.playerID); I was hoping that would let me capture the event in javascript with ("player" is the ID of my player) AudioPlayer.addListener("player", "AudioPlayer.onStop", function() { alert('stopped'); }); But my javascript function never seems to get called

• Dropping support for IE6, Is swfObject still relevant?

  We have recently dropped support for IE6 at my job. The other developers have have opted for a generic object embed method: <object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="example.swf" width="800" height="600" > <param name="movie" value="example.swf"> <param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"> </object> This seems to work in all modern browsers but it really rubs me the wrong way. I'm sure this is wrong in several ways and is clearly a big step back in sophistication. So my question is in 2 parts, what is wrong with the above method? Is swfObject still best practice and what issues does it solve (besides IE6 click-activate)? Citations less then a year old would also be helpful.

• Actionscript 3: foreach drawing object in movieclip

  Hey, I got a europe map designed in flash (1 movieclip, 1 frame, really simple), which contains the map as drawing objects directly inside the scene and in addition some specific countries as clickable buttons. So far it's working fine. What I need now is to make all the other drawing objects clickable without having to edit and script each object. I'm thinking about something like this (pseudo code): foreach(obj in MovieClip) { if(obj !typeof(Button)) { obj.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, genericClickListener); } } I just don't know the syntax how to achieve that. • Preload a lot of tiny pics

  I'm thinking about how to approach the problem at hand. There's a flash movie that requires a lot of relativly small images and I'm trying to optimize the time it takes for them to be preloaded. One thing I've considered it turning on KeepAlive in Apache on the server side. That works. But my mind still wonders if there's anything else ;-) So, what other approaches I may try? Is there a way to compress all those images and then unpack on client side? I have full control on both server and client side. Can even try installing something other than Apache. Cache is not an option because it already works and it's first time loading that bothers me here.

• Free SWF Obfuscator

  Does anybody know of a free flash obfuscator? All I can find are commercial ones with free trials. I have done numerous google searches, and have been unable to find what I am looking for. I know that obfuscators do not make your swf hack proof, but they make things harder. Things I am looking for in an obfuscator: Unlimited obfuscations No time limit No watermark (or on the left side only! Right side is no good, same with center) Able to publish work (no special player needed other than standard flashplayer) I really was surprised to see how hard it was to find a good obfuscator (tried encoder, protection, etc. instead as well) and how easy it is to find a decompiler.... It is imperative that my code be protected, at least partially, to discourage the hacking of my game.

• Video not playing in IE in hidden div using JW Player, SWFObject and FancyZoom

  Hi all, I have a video that is meant to start playing when a user clicks on an image and said image opens a FancyZoom overlay. It works fine in every browser except IEs. If I place the video in a div that is not hidden (display:none actually), the video starts as expected. So it seems there is a problem with either Flash, JW Player, SWFObject or any combination of these when trying to load a video in a hidden div. Anyone know any workarounds? I tried modifying the FancyZoom library (see my fork: http://github.com/lgomez/fancy-zoom/blob/master/prototype/js/fancyzoom.js) so I could use a callback to inject the video AFTER the zoom effect was completed but that did'n work. • Actionscript 2.0 mx.managers.CreatePopUp dialog triggers onRollOver for events underneath it

  All, On the main stage I have a button that is highlighted on rollover. I am using mx.managers.CreatePopUp to create a dialog box that pops up and takes user information. When the dialog box appears above the button, mousing over the dialog box triggers the highlight for the button beneath it. Can you provide some suggestions as to what the issue might be caused by? (I am fairly new to Flash so any suggestions would be helpful. Just looking for things to experiment with to get the correct behavior.) Other info that might be helpful: I've noticed that when I create a modal version of the dialog box, this behavior does not occur. Dismissing the modal dialog disables the entire stage. Fixing this issue would also solve my problem, but I've been unsuccessful thus far. Thanks in advance.

• null object reference in ScrollPane/endDrag() when scrollDrag=true

  Hello there. In my flash application, I've got multiple windows which use Scrollpanes. The scrollDrag property is set to true on these because I want that functionality. If I close (within my application) one of these 'windows' and open another, I seem to get a whole lot of this error showing up in my logs: TypeError: Error #1009: Cannot access a property or method of a null object reference. at fl.containers::ScrollPane/endDrag() Sometimes I get thousands of these, which I'm guessing is probably slowing my app down a bit, but otherwise is not causing a problem. Looking through the adobe code for scrollpane, endDrag is really simple: protected function endDrag(event:MouseEvent):void { stage.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_MOVE, doDrag); } The stage var is the only thing that could be null here. The only thing I can think to do is set scrollDrag=false before the window in my application closes so that nothing is listening for the event. Any other suggestions?

• How to select items from XmlList

  My Flash designer is reading an XML stream I'm sending back to the browser (I'm a C# dev). We have this working fine. He is then selecting into an XMLList where a element has its id a certain value i.e. . This is also working just fine. In this XmlList, are Events, that look a little something like this: event startdate enddate end event I don't know how to use the formatting here - but each of those items is an element. startdate would have a value such as 04/02/2010 and enddate 6/30/2010. Now, from this XmlList I do have of Events, I need to select all Events where a new variable myDate, falls in between the startdate and enddate. I'm not sure how to do this in AS3 - can anyone help me? Thank you very much in advance!

  So, you've probably heard about Apple's change to its agreement to prohibit source-to-source translation, thereby blocking translation from Flash (in CS5) and also from Android (via XMLVM). You may also have read about a response by a well-known Adobe developer, and calls to boycott development for the iPhone. Given that this audience is a better representative of the developer community than those who post comments on the NYT, Digg, and other news sites, I was wondering what your opinions were about this decision. Will any of you switch to Android from the iPhone or avoid development on the iPhone as a result of this? Since this is fairly subjective, I am making this a community wiki. • TextField instance inside a button Layer is null

  I've created an button object in flash. The button contains 2 layers. One is the background image and on top of it is a textField. The textfield is dynamic. I use the button inside a movieclip and I export it in a SWC. The I'm trying to use it in flex. I'm trying to do this: var myComponent:MyComponent = new MyComponent(); myComponent.button01.theTextField.text = "Caption"; I get and instance of the button, but the instance of the textField is null and I'm not able to change the text(but the default text appears onscreen). Does anyone has any idea what is wrong? Here is the button timeline(Layer 2 contains the textfield, and the textfield instance is named theTextField):

• How to fix rotations in a Rubik's Cube?

  I'm trying to create a Rubik's Cube in Flash & Papervision and i'm really stuck here. I'm up to the point where i can rotate any plane of cubes once, but after that...it's messed up because all local coordinate systems are messy. I dont really know where to go from here, can anybody give any advice on what do do? I'm not looking for 'read about transformation matrices', i know i should (and i am doing that), but i'm not really sure what to look for. My idea is that, after each rotation, i should fix each coordinate system of each cube again, but i have no idea how. • Rails route rewriting quesiton

  Hi guys, I think this is an easy question. I am using this useful Flash Document Reader called FlexPaper. I have it embeded in one of my Show pages. But when I click the a link on their tool bar to show the document in a new browser, it points to the following link ... http://0.0.0.0:3000/intels/FlexPaperViewer.swf?ZoomTime=0.5&FitPageOnLoad=false&PrintEnabled=false&SwfFile=%2FPaper.swf which doesn't work, but if I remove the "intels" from the path so the url looks like: http://0.0.0.0:3000/FlexPaperViewer.swf?ZoomTime=0.5&FitPageOnLoad=false&PrintEnabled=false&SwfFile=%2FPaper.swf It works fine. My question is what is the best way to handle this. Can you write a route that rewrites a url that starts with intels/FlexPaperViewer.swf and removes the intels prefix? What would that look like? • Coordinates in distorted grid

  I have a grid in a 2D system like the one in the before image where all points A,B,C,D,A',B',C',D' are given (meaning I know the respective x- and y-coordinates). I need to calculate the x- and y-coordinates of A(new), B(new), C(new) and D(new) when the grid is distorted (so that A' is moved to A'(new), B' is moved to B'(new), C' is moved to C'(new) and D' is moved to D'(new)). The distortion happens in a way in which the lines of the grid are each divided into sub-lines of equal length (meaning for example that AB is divided into 5 parts of the equal length |AB|/5 and A(new)B(new) is divided into 5 parts of the equal length |A(new)B(new)|/5). The distortion is done with the DistortImage class of the Sandy 3D Flash engine. (My practical task is to distort an image using this class where the handles are not positioned at the corners of the image like in this demo but somewhere within it).

• I have some questions about building an AIR app for use with a connected projector.

  For an app I'm working on, I'd like to have a control panel window and a video output window to use for projecting video with an attached projector. I have built many Flash applications but this will be my first time using AIR so I have some questions. Is it possible to have two seperate windows as part of one AIR application? Can one of the windows (the video output) be in full-screen mode while the other window stays normal? How does AIR do with playing local video? Will there be crashes or choppy playback? Is there a better language option for what I'm trying to accomplish?

• Can ActionScript tell when a SWF was published?

  I'd like to write a little class that adds a Day/Month box showing the date a SWF was published from Flash. The company I work for regularly produces many, many SWFs and many versions of each, iterating over the course of months. A version-tracking system we've been using to communicate with our clients is a Day/Month date-box that gives the date the SWF was published. Up until now, we've been filling in the publish date by hand. If there's any way I can do this programatically with ActionScript that'd be fantastic. Any insight? Basically, all I need is the call that gives me the publish date, or even.. anything about the circumstances under which a SWF was published that I could use to roll into some form of.. automated version identification, unique to this SWF. So, can ActionScript tell when a SWF was published?

• SNMP from the browser

  There"s this idea of having a web app search for devices in the network (with elevated user permissions, of course). Checking the silverlight and flash APIs, there does not seem to be a way to do SNMP ( the UDP APIs are limited to multicasting media ). Anyone know a clever workaround? In windows, a small XBAP utility can do the SNMP stuff, but that leaves out the Mac OS X platform. Thanks for any ideas. ( I do have a SO account but I"m in a not so trustworthy public PC right now so I didn"t log in. )

• How Do I Convert text to a WAV file With Inaudible Waveform?

  I am trying to create an audio watermarking system. I figure the best solution is to create an audio file (WAV) based on a unique string of text and then combine this with the original wav. The part that makes this tricky (for me anyway) is: How do I convert the text string to a wav? How do I ensure that the resulting WAV form is inaudible (or at least barely noticeable to the listener). I would prefer this be done server side (via PHP, etc) but if the processing load isn't too much then would be ok with something in Flash or Javascript. I'd be willing to pay someone to create me a workable solution (complete source code that functions as described). Thanks, Scott!

• Programming language for web

  I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web. What programming languages deploy to the web? If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again) Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use? Thanks in advance!

• Popup Dialog Box Manager using PureMVC

  I am developing a a game in Flash using the PureMVC framework. From time to time I need to show dialog pop-up window to get a user response back (e.g. "Cancel", "OK" and other kinds of asynchronous user feedback) while "locking" the background for interactivity. I need some management for my pop-ups: all pop-up notifications should be stacked up, so that if two (or more) pop-up messages are initiated at the same time I show them one by one. What's the best practice here? Should I employ a proxy to manage my pop-ups (sounds unreasonable). How do I get feedback back from my dialog? using notifications?
