  • What ports tend to be unfiltered by boneheaded firewalls?

    Hi all, I like to be able to ssh into my server (shocking, I know). The problem comes when I'm traveling, where I face a variety of firewalls in hotels and other institutions, having a variety of configurations, sometimes quite boneheaded. I'd like to set up an sshd listening on a port that has a high probability of getting through this mess. Any suggestions? The sshd currently listens on a nonstandard (but < 1024) port to avoid script kiddies knocking on the door. This port is frequently blocked, as is the other nonstandard port where my IMAP server lives. I have services running on ports 25 and 80 but anything else is fair game. I was thinking 443 perhaps.   • Swapping out a hardware firewall does the mac address get cached?

    We need to replace a hardware firewall (cisco pix) and have a spare that we will use (temporarily). The firewall sits in front of a couple of web-servers colocated at a data-centre. The replacement will be configured with identical settings (external/internal IP addresses, configured ports etc.). When we swap the firewalls over, will this work immediately or will the old Pix's mac address be cached and the new firewall not be seen until the cache is cleared? (What is it though that is caching the address? Is it just the switch/router that our pix is connected to?) Reason for asking is a few years ago I had a smoothwall firewall in front of a lone server (the external IP of the smoothwall was also the external IP of the web-server). When I replaced the smoothwall with a pix, the IP address of the web-server stayed the same but it now had to be reached via the new firewall on a different IP. It took about 2-4 hours before the rest of the world could see that web-server again. I'm hoping for less downtime this time!

    Previously I was working with Server 2003 and managed to lock myself out of the server (I was accessing it remotely) by enabling the firewall. I want to remotely enable the firewall on Server 2008 without locking myself out of the server (access via RDP) and then selectively add IP addresses to the firewall to exclude. i.e. block specific IP addresses. Are there any step by step instructions on how to safely do this?

    I'm looking at using ConfigServer Security and Firewall (CSF; iptables-based). After I configure it properly, how much daily ongoing management is required of me to keep my server secure? Am I going to be flooded with "alert" emails that I need to check? Or does the firewall automatically take care of most security threats for me? Note: I understand that there's more to server security than just a software firewall, but this question is specifically for CSF security management.

  • Reclaiming deleted disk space from file vault

    I have my main user account encrypted with file vault. After deleting some data (like 20 GB) my free space on the hard drive hasn't change (yes I emptied the trash, confirmed that the files are actually gone, etc,etc). I also tried "erasing free space" in the disk utility app. I logged off, and rebooted and so far that space hasn't been reclaimed. I'm assuming file vault or disk utility has some method of reclaiming but I can't find it. Any ideas?

  • Windows 7: How to enable firewall disabled by global policy on a computer joined to a domain?

    On a Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit laptop joined to a corporate domain, the Windows Firewall is disabled by a global policy. Is there any way to enable the Windows Firewall in this scenario? The gpedit.msc setting Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections is inaccessible. EDIT: It appears that changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc\Start value to 4 will disable the GPO and allow you to start the firewall and stop the bots from pushing cr*p to your computer... will check on Monday and if it works I'll confirm here in case someone else in my situation wonders upon this question... EDIT: It's probably better if I write a mock windows service not doing anything and name it according to what is expected to be on my box and than crete mock McCrappy executable and mock McCrappy folder structure and remove all the actual stuff... That would take a little time but would most certainly make my box completely stealthy...

  • Stopped windows firewall service during ICS, how is this possible?

    Although windows firewall is required to be on when you "start" Internet Connection Sharing, you can stop the WF service with MMC. When done a client can still use the host machines internet. The firewall had port 80/http blocked, and now it is open for incoming traffic. However other ports used by applications on the host and client which communicate with each other still seem to be blocked. Can anybody explain what might be happening here? Doesn't ICS need windows firewall for NAT? Note: I am not actually seeing anything in the firewall logs after stopping the service, but even packets sent localhost on the host machine never arriving on these other random ports.

It's so frustrating not being able to find a simple firewall solution that enabled me to have a PBX running somewhere on the Internet which is firewalled in such a way that it can ONLY allows connections from and to the office, the DNS servers and the trunk(s) (and only support SSH (port 22) and ICMP traffic for the outside world). Hopefully, using this question, we can solve this problem once and for all.

  • How can I prevent Windows 7 from automatically changing the firewall settings (turning it back on) when changing network location?

    By default, the firewall is turned on on all my workstations. I want to disable it. That works just fine. However, if Windows thinks there is a change in the Network Location, the "Set Network Location" dialog appears. At that point my Firewall is still disabled. When my users click on any of the three options "Work", "Home" or "Public", Windows immediately changes the firewall settings and turns it back on. Is it possible to stop Windows 7 from automatically turning the firewall back on when you change the Network Location? If yes, how could I perform this task?

Also, should you have questions, as usual, feel free to ask those there, too.  ...and here come the answered questions:  When will Exadata be based on Solaris in place of Oracle Enterprise Linux?Exadata offers both Solaris 11 or Oracle Enterprise Linux.  The choice can be made at deployment time based on your OS needs.What are all other benefits and futures avilable in solaris 11 (cloud O.S.) compared to cloud based Red Hat Linux and Windows?suggest you check out our cloud white paper for a view of this. Have I understood this right? Livepatching KSplice-style is coming to Solaris 11 too?We're looking at that for certain types of Solaris patches in the future.Will there be a security framework like SST/JASS for Solaris 11?We can't talk about the future projects on a public forum, but we recognize the need for SST/JASS and want to address this as soon as possible. On the other side there are a whole bunch of "best practices" that are now embedded into Solaris 11 by default, so out of the box Solaris 11 should already address part of what SST/JASS gave you. (For example we did a lot of work on improving the auditing performance so that we can now have it turned on by default). On x86 can install VirtualBox in a Zone and use that to host other OSes.Yes, this was one of the first things we made sure would work when we acquired VirtualBox when we were still Sun Microsystems. If I have a Solaris 11 Control Domain on a T-series, can I run a Solaris 10 Ldom with Solaris 8 branded containers?Yes, you can.Is Oracle Solaris free or do we need to purchase?Solaris is free, the entitlement to run it comes either with a Sun system (new or historical) or for 3rd party systems the entitlement comes with a support contract. Note that for production use you will be expected to get a support contract. If you don't want to use the Solaris system (Sun or 3rd party) for production use (i.e. development) you can get an OTN license on the Oracle Technical Network website. Will encryption and deduplication both work on a share?This should work at the same time. What approaches does Solaris use to monitor usage?There are many different tools in Solaris to monitor usage. The main ones are the "stats" (vmstat, mpstat, prstat, ...), the kstat interface, and DTrace (to get details you couldn't see before). And then there are layered tools that can interface with these tools (Ops Center, BMC, CA, Tivoli, ...) Apart little-endian, big-endian how is it easy to port Solaris applications on Sparc to x86 and vice-versa ?Very easy. Except for certain hardware specific applications (those that utilize hardware specific drivers), all of the same Oracle Solaris APIs exist for all architectures. Is IPS based patching aware of the fact that zones can reside on ZFS and move from one physical server to another ?IPS is definitely aware of zones and uses ZFS to support boot environments for non-global zones in the same way that's used for the global zone. With respect to moving a zone from one physical server to another, Solaris 11 supports to the same zone attach/deattach method that was introduced in Solaris 10. Is vnic support in Ldoms planned?This is currently being investigated for a future LDOM release. Is it possible with the new patching system to build a system later with the same patch level as a system built a few months earlier?Yes, you can choose/define exactly which version should go to the system and it will always put the same bits in place. The technical answer is that you choose the version of the "entire" package you want on the system and the rest flows from there. Is it in the plans to allow zones to add/remove zpools to running zones dynamically in future updates?Work in this area is currently under investigation. Any plans to realese Solaris 11 source code? i.e. opensolaris?We currently can't comment on publicly releasing the source code. If you need/want this access please let your Oracle account team know. What about VirtualBox and Solaris11 for virtualization?Solaris 11 works great with VirtualBox, as both a client and a host system. Will Oracle DB software eventually be supplied as IPS packages? When?We don't have a date yet but this is actively being worked on. What are the new artifacts in Oracle Solaris 11 than the previous versions?There are quite a few actually. For example, IPS works with ZFS and Solaris Boot Environments to provide a safe environment for software lifecycle management so that changes can be reverted by switching to an older boot environment. With Zones on solaris 11, can I do paravirtualitation?The great thing about zones is you don't *need* paravirtualization. You're making the same direct kernel calls that you would outside of a zone.  It's an incredibly significant performance win over hypervisor-based virtualization. Will Oracle ever restart collaboration with the community?We continue to work with the community, just not as open on all projects as we did before (For example IPS is an open project) and the source of more than half of the Solaris packages is posted on our opensource websites. I can't comment on what we will do in the future. And with regards to bugs please file them through the support organization and we will get them resolved. Is zpool vdev removal on-the fly now possible ?This issue is actively being investigated although we don't have a date for when this feature will be available. They use Solaris Cluster to do this. What about VMware vMotion like feature?We have secure live migration with both Logical Domains on SPARC T series systems, and with Oracle VM on x86 systems. When running Solaris 10/11 on an enterprise server with a lot of zones, what are best practises commands to show the system is running fine? (has enough hardware resources). For example CPU / Memory / I/O / system load. What are the recommended values?For Solaris 11, look into the new zonestat(1M) command that provides a great deal of information about zone utilization. In addition, there is new work underway in providing additional observability in areas such as per-zone file system I/O. Java optimizations done with Solaris 11? For X86 platforms too? Where can I find more detail about this?There is lots of work that go into optimizing Java for Oracle Solaris 10 & 11 on both SPARC and x86.   • Fiscal year handling strategies in database design

    By fiscal year I mean all the data in the database (in all tables) that occurred in the particular year. Lets say that we are building an application that allows user to choose from different years. What way of implementing this would you prefer, and why: Separate fiscal year data based on multiple separate database instances (for example, on every fiscal year start you could create a new instance with no data) Have everything in one database, but with logic that automatically separates records from different years. Personally, I have "seen" both methods, and I would choose the second. The only argument I can think of for the first method is to have less records in case that these are really big databases - but still, you could "archive" old records by joining them in summaries or by some other way. What do you think?

  • Database design for very large amount of data

    Hi, I am working on a project, involving large amount of data from the delicious website.The data available is at files are "Date,UserId,Url,Tags" (for each bookmark). I normalized my database to a 3NF, and because of the nature of the queries that we wanted to use In combination I came down to 6 tables....The design looks fine, however, now a large amount of data is in the database, most of the queries needs to "join" at least 2 tables together to get the answer, sometimes 3 or 4. At first, we didn't have any performance issues, because for testing matters we haven't had added too much data in the database. No that we have a lot of data, simply joining extremely large tables does take a lot of time and for our project which has to be real-time is a disaster.I was wondering how big companies solve these issues.Looks like normalizing tables just adds complexity, but how does the big company handle large amounts of data in their databases, don't they do the normalization? thanks

    Hello, I'm trying to connect to an oracle database with sqldeveloper. I've installed the .Net oracle drivers and placed the tnsnames.ora file at C:\Oracle\product\11.1.0\client_1\Network\Admin. I'm using the following format in tnsnames.ora. dev = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 192.168.XXX.XXX)(PORT = XXXX)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = idpdev2) ) ) In sqldeveloper, when I try to create a new connection, no tns names show up as options. Is there something I'm missing?

  • Database structure - To join or not to join

    Hi! We're drawing up the database structure with the help of mySQL Workbench for a new app and the number of joins required to make a listing of the data is increasing drastically as the many-to-many relationships increases. The application will be quite read-heavy and have a couple of hundred thousand rows per table. The questions: Is it really that bad to merge tables where needed and thereby reducing joins? Should we start looking at horizontal partitioning? (in conjunction with merging tables) Is there a better way then pivot tables to take care of many-to-many relationships? We discussed about instead storing all data in serialized text columns and having the application make the sorting instead of the database, but this seems like a very bad idea, even though that the database will be heavily cached. What do you think? Thanks!

    Hi, I am required to work on a php project that requires the database to cater to multiple users. Generally, the idea is similar to what they have for carbonmade or basecamp, or even wordpress mu. They cater to multiple users, whom are also owners of their accounts. And if they were to cancel/terminate their account, anything on the pages/database would be removed. I am not quite sure how should I design the database? Should it be: separate tables for individual user account separate databases for individual user account or otherwise? Kindly advise me for the best approach to this issue. Thank you very much.

    I'm a database newbie designing a database. I'll use SO to ask my question because it's easier to ask it on something that you can see already, but it's not the same, it will just help me understand the right approach. As you can see, there are many questions here and each can have many answers. How should I store the answers in a table? Should I store all the answers in the SAME table with a unique id (make it the key) and just a new field for the question id? What if there are 100,000 answers like there is here? Do I still store them in 1 table? What keys should I use to minimize search time when I want to search for the answers of a specific question? The database is both read and write if that makes any difference in this case.

    Typically I use a database such as MySQL or PostGreSQL on the same machine as the application using it, which makes access easy and secure. I'm just now building the first site that will have a separate physical database server (later this year it will). I'm wondering 3 things: (security) What things should I look into for starters pertaining to security of accessing a separate machine's database? (scalability) Are their scalability issues that I should think about pertaining to this (technology agnostic)? (more ServerFaultish but related) If starting the DB out on the same physical server (using a separate VMWare VM) and later moving to a different physical server, are there implicit problems that I'll have to deal with? Isn't another VM still accessed via localhost? If these questions are completely ludicrous, I apologize to you DB experts.

  • Database with users design

    I am in database design development phase. Application will work with large number of users (LARGE :)) I designed 80% of database but I have one Users table which is connected to everything else: Users {UserId, FirstName, LastName, Username, Password, PasswordQuestion, PasswordAnswer, Gender, RoleId, LastLoginDate etc etc} I saw asp.net membership database structure where Users and Membership are two tables. My questions are: Should I use one users table with all users data in it or more tables? If answer is 'more tables', what tables to use? Any advice on how to structure relation between those tables? This is sample relation that I have, and trying to improve. I don't understand why user and userChild are separated tables?

  • MYSQL Event to update another database table

    Hey All, I have just taken over a project for a client and the database schema is in a total mess. I would like to rename a load of fields make it a relationship database. But doing this will be a painstaking process as they have an API running of it also. So the idea would be to create a new database and start re-writing the code to use this instead. But I need a way to keep these tables in sync during this process. Would you agree that I should use MYSQL EVENT's to keep updating the new table on Inserts / updates & deletes?? Or can you suggest a better way?? Hope you can advise !! thanks for any input I get

  • Connect to Oracle database on a different server from PHP

    Hello I have a database engine sitting on a remote server, while my webserver is present locally. I have worked pretty much with client-server architecture, where the server has both the webserver and the database engine. Now I need to connect to an Oracle database which is situated on a different server. Can anybody give me any suggestions?? I believe ODBC_CONNECT might not work. Do I use OCI8 drivers?? How would I connect to my database server. Also I would have a very high number of database calls going back and forth, so is it good to go with persistent connection or do I still use individual database calls?
