• Pre-set OS X dock icon positions for non-permanent apps?

  Is it possible to have OS X always place certain app icons in specific places (eg. position "two") in the dock, when they're not permanently docked apps? At the moment every non-permanent app is added to the end (far right), but, for example, if I have my mail and todo list apps open, I want them to pop up in positions one and two. I know this can easily be achieved by permanently docking icons, I'm specifically looking for a solution for non-permanent apps. I suspect OS X has no built in facility for this, perhaps there's a 3rd party app or script/command line trick?

• Is there way to enable 4 GB RAM in 32-bit Windows OS?

  I upgraded my PC to 4 GB RAM and I get only 3 GB. Windows 7 32-Bit consider that I've 4 GB RAM but didn't use more than 3 GB. Someone told me that MS Windows 32-bit doesn't support RAM larger than 3 GB. So please is there any way to make my OS "Windows 7 32-Bit" support more than 3 GB RAM ? *`Note: I can't move to 64-bit because I've many program doesn't work with a 64-bit OS. Edit:: I tried what Mr. Wonsungi advised me but whenever I check this option: Enable support for 4 GB of RAM I get the following error: 'Cannot access to the registry key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}.' There is no "CLSID" in my registry, I don't know why!.

• C drive should only contain OS. Myth or fact?

  So, I have a 500GB HDD @7200RPM. It is split as: C: 97GB D: 179GB E: 188GB My belief is to keep OS ONLY in C:\ and any adamant programs that won't go anywhere apart from C:\ [because this speeds up the PC during startup process] and install programs in D:\ so that in case I have to reinstall the OS, I will have the programs readily available after reinstall. But I have begun to think this approach is flawed because if C:\ is formatted, I will lose registry values and stuff that goes in %appdata% and so it is no use keeping programs in D:/ drive because they will be useless after all. Should I go ahead and install ALL of my programs in C:\ and then use D:\ and E:\ for storing my data like photos, text files, java files n all? How will this impact the performance of the HDD? I only have 3 programs in D:\Program Files so it will be easy to reinstall them :)

• VMWare workstation: guest OS becomes sluggish after being idle for 12+ hours?

  Hi, My VM becomes sluggish after a few hours(~12 hours or so) of being idle, there is no impact on the host, just the gueste. The guest OS becomes sluggish. It has lots of RAM, runs on Raid 0, quad core i5 750, everything is defragged, but the only way I found to keep it's responsiveness optimal is to shutdown(dumps the memory) and the start; a restart of the guest OS doesnt dump the memory so I need to be able to do a stop of the VM, and then a start. Coming from Hyper-V I had to learn VMWare and after a few months of fine tunning it I'm quite impressed with how configurable VMWare is. This is the only small issue I haven't been able to fix, has anyone encountered this?

• Bold font shortcut in WordPress editor in Mac OS X? (The equivalent to Ctrl+b in Windows)

  I've recently acquired a MacBook Air and I'm getting used to Mac OS X shortcuts. One that I can't find, though, is the change to bold a piece of text previously selected in the WordPress editor. I do this with a simple Ctrl+b after selecting the text in Windows, but the expected Command+b in Mac OS X does not work (in WordPress at least. It seems it works in other editors online and offline). Is there a shortcut for it... and for italics?

• How to keep TightVNC client on Windows XP alive when connected to OS X?

  I'm using TightVNC on my Windows XP workstations to connect to a remote OS X box (10.5.x) using OS X's VNC support. I've noticed that the TightVNC will become unresponsive after a period of inactivity. Is this a common issue? Restarting TightVNC solves the problem, but can be a bit annoying. Is there a solution to this? I don't suppose copy & paste between the two systems can be made to work?

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case.   I have a problem bugging me with Mac OS X's native Apache/PHP installation. With my PHP scripts, I have to alter the file permissions on each folder I want to access. For example, in an upload script I would have to set the destination directory to 'read & write' for the group 'everyone'. However, I believe this is not the best practice and would like all of my directories to be readily writable to PHP. My scripts are stored in /Library/WebServer/Documents/, which is Mac OS X's default directory to serve web pages locally.

• Audio Midi Setup needs to be quit before able to be opened again in OS X Mountain Lion

  Since Mac OS X Lion (I'm using Mac OS 10.8.2 now) I have the exact same issue with audio midi setup software from Apple. It's not really a not working thing but it still is annoying: Every time I open audio midi setup to change something (e.g. change to my Apple TV for audio playback) and close the window afterwards the application doesn't quit – what would be OK if a click on the Icon (or the starting of the application over Spotlight) would cause the application to open a new window of audio midi setup, but it doesn't. So what I have to do to get the window back is first quitting the application manually and restarting it again. That's quite painful since I sometimes opened the application days ago and forgot that it's still opened... Does anyone have the same issue? Can someone explain this behavior to me? And most important: Does anyone know a workaround?

• Is it possible to create a Mac OS specific CSS to fix font difference ?

  I'm working on a project with a designer and he insisted on using some specific font for titles and various elements in the page. So we're using a font kit to embed with @font-face. It's working perfectly on PC (Firefox, IE 7 and 8, Chrome, Safari) but on Mac OS (Safari and Firefox) the fonts are not vertically aligned the same way. After looking on the Web, I didn't find any solution for this except "there always been differences between browsers and platforms, live with it". I know that fonts are never rendered exactly the same across platforms, but this time it's not something like the font looks more bold or something like that. The font looks as if it's baseline is completely different between Windows and Mac OS X. On Mac OS, the font, at a size of 16px is 3px higher than on PC. So I'm looking for a backup solution : is there a way to create a CSS specifically for Mac OS users? I do not want to target only Safari because Safari PC is ok, and Firefox Mac is not ok. Or if you have a solution to fix the baseline difference that does not require a specific CSS file, I'd be happy to hear it. Thanks!

  I tried to install with "grub-install" grub for guest os (which is debian) from host (centos). Tried with chroot, tried with deboostrap, tried with netinstaller. Centos is running on two raid hdd's,under LVM. Lvm volumes are created everything is formated and works. Only bootloader problem left. Netinstaller just throws me a window with error that grub can't be installed, debootstrap instructions is not clear for me in here, grub-install doesn't work in chroot, and out of chroot (grub-install /dev/mylvm/partition) Please can somebody write how to install grub for domU (guest) os from centos?

  I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. There are many tools to do that on Windows, but I can’t finger out how to do it in OS X. Please note that I can’t run a VM, as my Air is a limited use machine. What I’ve tried: Simply restore to USB. Convert the image to img and use dd. These don’t work. How do I go about doing this?

  I have just purchased a 120GB SSD with the intent of making it my boot drive. I'd like to keep it as lean as possible since, y'know, it's so small (Heaven help me). I've read Can I move my home folder in Mac OS X? and Moving Mac OS X user folders? which discourage moving the entire home dir to a data drive. Is it possible and less-dangerous to leave the home directory on the boot drive but move the big data directories to a slower drive and symlink to them? I have the same thoughts with the /Applications directory, but maybe I should make that a separate question?

  i have a biztalk - window service tied middleware application which talks to other system. recently we had a request to test for scenarios which relates to the date. as we have a lot of places in the application which uses the .net Datetime.Now value, we don't really want to go into the code level and change all these values. so we're looking at the simplest way to test which is to just change the OS time. but what we notice is that sometimes when we change the system date time, we will get account lock out due to Active Directory. So my question is what's a good and safe way that i can test for future dates, etc by changing the windows OS system date time but without causing any issues with the Active Directory. And where can i find out more about AD and how it issues token and what's the correlation with the system date time changes. Thanks! ~m

  I am developing an app for the iPhone OS devices, and am using a third-party engine which is not well documented but I've made great progress with it anyway. The problem: The engine's developer strongly urges extending from the existing template projects bundled with the engine, but the engine's plist files are Mac OSX project plist files. This is an iPhone engine, and so I cannot understand why the plist file is structured to take keys for Mac OS apps, but that's how it is. I did a FileMerge comparison to ensure there was nothing within the file itself that defined its use for one OS or the other, so I guess it's defined somewhere in the project settings.
