  • What presentation software should I use for a five minute talk.

    I am giving a lightning talk shortly and need to put together some slides. It is a technical talk about Perl documentation. I will be using a OS X machine to run the presentation software. I would like something that is minimalistic easy to publish to the web simple to control (forward and back should do it, but hotkey access to individual slides would be nice) simple to create slides for (preferably purely text based and doesn't require much in the way of markup)

  • Mac OS X Terminal.app Ubuntu 9.10 SSHD and incorrect keyboard mapping

    Does anyone have any Idea how to handle this? I can't stand connecting to certain Ubuntu boxes via Mac OS X because of issues with keyboard layout etc. I have set TERM=vt100 and TERM=xterm-color in Ubuntu .bashrc and also in the Terminal.app advanced preferences and nothing seems to fix this issue. Trying to use arrow keys on slim silver keyboard results in ^[[A etc. From Answer OS X 10.6.4 When I try to run /lib/terminfo/x/xterm-color I get permission denied? Maybe this is the issue?! Regular bash login shell. If I sudo often it works. Which leads me to believe the above permissions problem is the cause.   • Two monitors with Mac Mini - one displays black despite receiving a signal

    My Mac Mini outputs to my two new monitors - Dell U2311Hs. The LED on the bezel displays blue when receiving a signal, or yellow otherwise. Both screens are displaying blue. It also seems my Mini can see both of them... However, one of them is black. It just displays black, but appears to be receiving a signal (when I turn the Mac off, it then displays No Signal). To make things weirder, on startup, the boot up (white with Apple logo) appears on the right monitor (the one that now displays black). Occasionally, it flickers up on the black screen for 1 second. I have tried Detect Displays. It appears to do nothing. I'm also running a dual monitor KVM. Video connections are DVI-D. How can I fix this situation? Thanks. Update This is the weirdest thing - I used the DVI-D cable that came with the KVM and it seems to have fixed it - I didn't both because it looks identical to any other DVI cable (in form an pin out). So, I will accept an answer if someone can tell me what may be the difference in these cables?

    I have this simple AppleScript which takes the text in the clipboard and outputs the amount of words and characters used. What I'm trying to do is passing "display dialog" to Growl or growlnotify. I know how to use growlnotify in the shell - it's great and highly customizable (stick note, assign app icon or an image, etc) - but the point is: I don't know how to do it in AppleScript. I google a bit but now time has passed and I decided to post my question here.   • Cannot do sudo: "/etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440"

    I have a problem: I don't have a root password on my mac. I just have an Admin account, which can do stuff using sudo. Now, I wanted to add my normal user to the /etc/sudoers file as well. Since it did not let me write to that file (even writing using sudo), I did this: sudo chmod u+w /etc/sudoers That worked. But since then I can't do any sudo command anymore on my system. It complains that /etc/sudoers has the wrong mode: $ sudo touch /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault It sounds like a bad joke, because now I can't even change the mode back to 0440: $ sudo chmod 0440 /etc/sudoers sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0740, should be 0440 Segmentation fault Is there any way to fix this situation? I need to get my sudo abilities back.

  • OS X Terminal ends session at opening : permission denied

    I have an issue with Terminal on MacOS X 10.7.4. I know where it comes from, but I don't know how to solve it : Yesterday, I installed fish-shell as a shell replacement. Following the installation instructions, I ended typing the following command : chsh -s /usr/local/bin/fish I noticed I had to do a : sudo bash for it to work. Once done, I quit. Today, I try to run Terminal and I see te following message : Last login: Wed Jun 27 12:38:01 on ttys000 login: /usr/local/bin/fish: Permission denied [Opération terminée] (yes, I'm French, which explains my poor English). I cannot type any command since I have no access to the Terminal. I tried with iTerm2 but same issue. No command is set at launch in the default profile of Terminal/iTerm2 (well, in the UI). How can I take the power back ? Thank you.

  • Getting error code -41 when copying files to external drive

    I'm having trouble copying some files from my mac to an external hard drive: I keep getting the nondescript "error code -41". I noticed some of the files with an additional "@" permission bit had the "com.apple.quarantine" flag set. I used the "xattr" command from this article What should I do about com.apple.quarantine? to take care of the quarantine flag and sort that out (these files were copied over from another mac on my network, so I guess OS X flagged them as quarantine). That took care of the problem for those files but I still have some that I can't manually copy over to the external drive. The only other thing I've noticed is that some of these files have a an extra permission bit: "drwxr-xr-x+" which I haven't been successful in googling. Aside from that I don't see anything else. Also, Disk Utility says everything's fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Zsh super slow inside my Git repo

    My Zsh is super slow inside a certain Git repo of mine. When I Google "zsh git slow", I get a bunch of results about Git autocompletion being slow, but autocompletion isn't necessarily my problem; it's everything. I tried removing all plugins and that, strangely, didn't do anything at all when I opened a new shell. Zsh would still do Git stuff inside my Git repo. I found this snippet on this page: function git_prompt_info() { ref=$(git symbolic-ref HEAD 2> /dev/null) || return echo "$ZSH_THEME_GIT_PROMPT_PREFIX${ref#refs/heads/}$ZSH_THEME_GIT_PROMPT_SUFFIX" } That made everything fast again, but it also gave me a prompt that looks like this: ? snip git:(master Note the missing right parenthesis. That's kind of lame. Plus the whole thing just seems like a hack I shouldn't have to do. There's also this promising-looking SU question, but the links on the accepted answer are dead. How can I get my Zsh not to be slow inside a Git repo?

  • How to detect device type from device connected to router?

    I have a att router and there is an unknown device connected to my network. I can't seem to kick it off because of how att's router settings are created which is kind of dumb. I am able to see its local ip and mac address. I am on a mac with snow leopard. How can I get more information on the device with the information that I have? I want to see what kind of device it is, I have checked all devices that are connected to the router and none seem to match the local ip that is connected. I have WPA encryption setup with a strong password.

    Problem: Occasionally, my Macbook becomes very slow after waking up from sleep I open Activity Monitor and notice some processes like makewhatis are taking 100% CPU I kill the process[es] and then everything works fine again Questions: My guess is that these processes are cron jobs. Is that correct? Is it ok to kill them? Is there a way to make this problem not happen? Is this fixed on Snow Leopard? I'm using Leopard (10.5.8) on a MacBook5,1

  • Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore on Mac OS X

    I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. It is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. Reset the PRAM. Nope. Checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. I need to say that: a) The device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause). b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. I kindly ask you: Is there a way to force my MacPro recognize the USB device? What can I check? Is there something that caches USB connection that can be reset?     I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. On the mac, I use /etc/hosts : 127.0.0.1 mysite and it works fine : I can type mysite in the url and the website will display. What I want to do is be able to reproduce the same on Win7 with IE8 for example. Another guy did it successfully here but I can't : Parallels: How to see a Mac-hosted website from Windows? On Mac : ifconfig -a vnic0 10.211.55.2 on Win7 I tried this C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts 10.211.55.2 mysite What am I missing ?

  • Pixelated PDF in Apple Preview slideshow mode, but not in regular window

    I have a PDF which is a presentation exported from OpenOffice. Two of the slides in this presentation have embedded .eps graphs. When I run the presentation using Preview's slideshow mode, the graphs are severely aliased and the axes are illegible. But when I just view the PDF in regular windowed mode, the graphs are properly antialiased and legible. Is there any way to get Preview to do the same display that it does in windowed mode, but in fullscreen (no window title, no menu bar)? (I don't want to just run the presentation from OpenOffice, because OpenOffice shows the same horrible aliasing effects plus it takes about 30 seconds to show the slide. I don't have, and don't want, Acrobat or MS Office. However, please do feel free to suggest other programs for doing PDF-based slideshows.)

  • 1 iPhone, 2 (potentially 3) Macs......& Google Apps Sync?!

    Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... Help greatly appreciated, Kind regards

  • Hibernate between OS X and Bootcamp Win 7

    Wouldn't it be great if someone wrote a guide or an app which allowed you to switch instantly between OS X and Windows using Hibernate in both OS:s? Windows 7 already has an option "Hibernate" which allows you to boot back to your OS X partition, but OS X does not exactly offer the same. However, there are possibilities here. It seems that the recent Mac's have 3 different kinds of sleeping mode: Sleep: Low power consumption, RAM still active. Legacy Safe Sleep: No power consumption(?), writes RAM to disk and shuts down (is this the same as Hibernate?) Safe Sleep: Writes RAM to disk and enters sleep mode. If battery level drops too low it goes into Hibernate (is this Hibernate the same as #2 in this list? This is the Hibernate I will be referring to int he rest of this post) It seems that I am unable to force my MacBook Pro (Late 2011) OS X 10.7.3 into a true hibernate using either command line or apps that are supposed to do this. I believe the Mac should show that white loading bar whilst waking up if it was truly put into hibernate (which it does not). But I can get this white bar to show by letting my battery level drop to 0% so there is obviously a system function for it (obviously, duh! :). When Win 7 goes into hibernate it shuts down completely and you can then boot into OS X on startup. On OS X however, hibernate forces you to wake up into OS X. Can you hack this so that you're allowed to select boot partition after OS X hibernates? Would it be possible to use the true hibernate system functionalities of Win 7 and OS X to create a kind of instant switching between the two? Imagine this on a quick SATA-3 SSD like my 180GB Intel 520. Thanks / Willem

  • Is there a way to make scp run faster on a Mac OS X?

    I'm trying to a upload a Flex generated SWF file from my Macbook (running Snow Leopard) using the command scp main.swf server.com:/ I had setup key authentication to prevent typing the user/pass every time. This process normally takes up to two minutes using my connection at home (768kbps down/300+ kbps up). The interesting part is that when I use WinSCP in my Windows XP machine, the process only takes 30 seconds max. Both my MacBook and Windows XP machine use the same internet connection. The MacBook is connected to the router via cable (which should be faster right?) while the Windows XP connects through Wifi. Let me know if you need additional information in order to diagnose the problem. Thanks!

  • Installing "SoX" via the Terminal

    I'm new to installing applications via the Terminal, so excuse my absolute ignorance on the subject. I want to install SoX ( http://sox.sourceforge.net/ ), so I can do some ninja audio editing. First I installed git, then I installed SoX. I didn't get any error messages and the installation has spawned a sox-folder in my Users/myName-folder. However when I use the program by typing "sox" in the Terminal, nothing happens, all I get is "command not found". Does anybody know how to troubleshoot this?
