  • chdir warning when opening .tar file on OS X

    I need to unarchive a file to the /Developer folder. Install Qt for iOS SDK The Qt for iOS SDK has been configured to be installed in the default Xcode installation location /Developer. It is not possible to install the SDK into another location without first rebuilding it, as the install location is contained within the qmake executable, and that is built as part of Qt. To install the Qt for iOS SDK, open ‘Terminal’ and type the following from the command­-line: tar –xf qt­-everywhere-­ios­-4.8.0­-xxx.tar.gz –C /Developer (where xxx is an identifier which can be used to determine the build of the iOS SDK eg. arm7-­-nossl) This will install the Qt for iOS SDK into the following path: /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/usr/share/qt­-everywhere­-ios­-4.8.0 When I perform the operation I get the information: Lions-Mac:Documents User$ tar -xf qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-arm7-nossl.tar.gz -C /Developer tar: could not chdir to '/Developer' Any idea what is wrong?

  • How are thumbnails stored on Mac OS X?

    I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

  • Alternative terminal emulators for OS X

    This might sound ridiculous, but my eyes are tired of looking at the crappy font rendering in OS X's Terminal.app, is there anything you guys recommend? I know it's like one of those things that you can easily say, "It's shell! what more can you ask for!" but really, all these great methods for rendering fonts and anti-aliasing, and we developers haven't even integrated that into our most trusty tool... at least that I know of. Anyhow, let's discus shell alternatives, thoughts?

  • How can I make a Prism webapp look like Firefox to a website? (user agent spoofing)

    I thought it would be cool to use Mozilla's Prism to create a webapp for min.us, but drag and drop is disallowed because the site doesn't see the program as Firefox, Chrome or Safari, those of which are apparently the only browsers allowed to do drag and drop for fear that something will be horribly broken. I'm pretty sure Prism runs on the same engine as Firefox, yet I wouldn't doubt it if Prism is running on an older version since it's kind of a forgotten beta. Anyways, like the title says, I want to be able to make Prism webapps appear look like Firefox to websites to unlock awesome features. Also, if it can only be done with Fluid, then I answers regarding that will be fine. I'm not sure what engine it's running though.

  • Two monitors with Mac Mini - one displays black despite receiving a signal

    My Mac Mini outputs to my two new monitors - Dell U2311Hs. The LED on the bezel displays blue when receiving a signal, or yellow otherwise. Both screens are displaying blue. It also seems my Mini can see both of them... However, one of them is black. It just displays black, but appears to be receiving a signal (when I turn the Mac off, it then displays No Signal). To make things weirder, on startup, the boot up (white with Apple logo) appears on the right monitor (the one that now displays black). Occasionally, it flickers up on the black screen for 1 second. I have tried Detect Displays. It appears to do nothing. I'm also running a dual monitor KVM. Video connections are DVI-D. How can I fix this situation? Thanks. Update This is the weirdest thing - I used the DVI-D cable that came with the KVM and it seems to have fixed it - I didn't both because it looks identical to any other DVI cable (in form an pin out). So, I will accept an answer if someone can tell me what may be the difference in these cables?

  • Upgrading Mac OS X 10.5.8 Corrupted Lightroom 2.7

    I use Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2. I recntly upgraded to 10.5.8 and began to have issues with LR. So, I reinstalled and downgraded my OS. I'm now running 10.5.2 on my MacBook 2.4G Core Duo with 4G RAM. Everything works fine now, but the downgrade also resulted in having only Safari 3.0.4 and and older version of iTunes. I can't upgrade either of those until I upgrade the OS but I'm reluctant to do so because I might have problems again. Any suggestions? Install 10.6 instead? What kind of issues can I expect from that?

  • Parallels 6 - Is It Just Me or Does It Run Really Slowly?

    I've been running Parallels since version 2 with great success. I use it as my .Net development environment and over the last few years have converted so many others to the Parallels/Mac way of doing Windows/.Net development that I feel I should be getting perks/gifts and/or freebies from Parallels Corporation ;-) A month or so ago I upgraded to version 6 and ... immediately wished I hadn't. I'm currently running it on a laptop - a 2009 MacBook Pro (13"/2.53Ghz/4GB) while my MacPros at work and home are still running v5. I have seen nothing in v6 that makes me want to upgrade the install on those. The general problem is performance - upon starting or suspending a vm (always Windows 7 Ultimate), OS X slows down, quite often freezing for a minute or two at a time. The performance of the vms themselves are fine, but for me the point of this set-up is to be able to do web-browsing, email checking etc. on the OS X side of things while doing the stuff that can only be done on Windows (Visual Studio, SQL Server tools) on Windows. I have been using Parallels for a while so at least feel like I know what I'm doing so at the moment I am heading towards forming an opinion that its Parallels thats to blame. I've tweaked and tweaked all the vm configuration properties but to no avail. Support emails to the company have all received replies - there are no documented case of the issue you mention. Has anyone else seen this problem and if so, have you found a fix?

  • Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore on Mac OS X

    I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. It is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. Reset the PRAM. Nope. Checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. I need to say that: a) The device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause). b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. I kindly ask you: Is there a way to force my MacPro recognize the USB device? What can I check? Is there something that caches USB connection that can be reset?   • 1 iPhone, 2 (potentially 3) Macs......& Google Apps Sync?!

    Currently I use a beast of a G5 Mac at work for all my software/web development, an iMac G5 at home for personal use & a MacBook Pro for when i'm on the go. At work we make heavy use of all the Google Apps features such as calendar & docs etc. We all have an address book (local mac application) that gets synced with a list of contacts stored on our mail server. I want to be able to integrate the Google Apps calendar with my iPhone calendar (or even just iCal - which i can then sync to the iPhone). Essentially I want all three Macs to have the Google calendar synced to their version of iCal including the iPhone. I've heard that Google Sync handles something along these lines but i'm unsure if it's going to fulfill my needs? I'm trying my best to avoid having to use MobileMe..... Help greatly appreciated, Kind regards

  • How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

    I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different. I filed a bug to mc with this information at http://www.midnight-commander.org/ticket/2339

  • How to fix /etc/ folder on Mac OS X

    I was following a tutorial which had this command to create a launchd.conf file in /etc/ sudo echo "some command" /etc/launchd.conf But it wouldn't work, I got permission denied after entering my admin password.     I have a TrueCrypt partition. When I insert it in Mac OS X, it always prompt me to initialize the hard disk. Is there a way to prevent Mac OS X from detecting uninitialize hard disk? [UPDATE] By the way, as Truecrypt suggested while I'm in Windows, I must make partitions so the OS won't detect the hard drive as uninitialized. Windows respected that the drive already have contents by the mere fact that it has partitions, while Mac OS X thinks that it is still uninitialized. I think Mac OS X is trying to be smart by detecting if each partition has a valid filesystem id/marker.

    I have this simple AppleScript which takes the text in the clipboard and outputs the amount of words and characters used. What I'm trying to do is passing "display dialog" to Growl or growlnotify. I know how to use growlnotify in the shell - it's great and highly customizable (stick note, assign app icon or an image, etc) - but the point is: I don't know how to do it in AppleScript. I google a bit but now time has passed and I decided to post my question here.   • Can't access files on external drive after reformatting Macbook Pro

    I recently had to reformat my Macbook Pro, and imported my account and settings from Time Machine via the Migration Assistant. Everything on the Mac itself is fine, but now I don't have permission to access almost everything on my external drive. A number of folders have the little red 'no access' sign on them and I can't rename or move anything. Looking at the info for these files, it appears that access rights were attached only to my old user account. Is there some way to reassign these files and folders to my new user account? Thanks.
