• MFC resource.h command/message IDs

  Hi I'm working on an MFC application, that got pretty messy over years and over different teams of developers. The resource.h file, which contains all command/message mappings grew pretty big over time, and has lots of problems (like duplicate IDs). I am not proficient with MFC, so the question might sound pretty stupid... MSDN docs mention that Command IDs and Message IDs should not be less than WM_USER and WM_APP correspondingly. I saw that most of the command IDs in resource.h generated by Visual Studio begin around 100. Shouldn't this cause some interfering with MFC/Windows commands and messages, that overlap with the application defined IDs? For example, I have a command ID : #define ID_MY_ID 101 and there is a windows command that has the same ID. When MC send this command to the APP, it's handled like an application defined ID_MY_ID, and the app is taking unnecessary actions. Is it a possible scenario? Also, is there some third party tool that helps to profile the project resources?

• Integrating a ClickOnce app with Outlook

  I have a ClickOnce app that used to be run by users with Power User privileges. So to integrate to outlook (e.g. syncing of emails, appointments and addresses) I used a 3rd party component from Add-In Express, which includes an ActiveX DLL. So when the user would download my app, I'd register the ActiveX DLL (if it wasn't already registered) and then would just interop with it in the application. Well, now the users had their privileges changed to standard limited User. Which means that they can't register DLLs (since it writes to the registry keys that are off limit). And the integration with Outlook fails, of course. What are some of options to integrate with Outlook for my situation?

• What frameworks to use to bootstrap my first production scala project ?

  I am making my first foray into scala for a production app. The app is currently packaged as a war file. My plan is to create a jar file of the scala compiled artifacts and add that into the lib folder for the war file. My enhancement is a mysql-backed app exposed via Jersey & will be integrated with a 3rd party site via HttpClient invocations. I know how to do this via plain java. But when doing it in scala, there are several decision points that I am pussyfooting on. scala 2.7.7 or 2.8 RC ? JDBC via querulous Is this API ready for production ? sbt vs maven. I am comfortable with maven. Is there a scala idiomatic wrapper for HttpClient (or should I use it just like in java) ? I'd love to hear your comments and experiences on starting out with scala.   Hi, We have a system that makes a use of 3rd party COM DLL written in vba We have a centralised web application and 1-50 client machines that must reference that COM DLL in order to use our centralised web application. The COM DLL is going to be updated rapidly in the future, which means that it has to be re-installed on every machine manually. Is it possible to centralise this COM DLL somwhere on the network? Is there any other alternatives? Otherwise the maintenance overhead will be huge... Thank you

  I'm testing my company's established Swing application for accessibility issues. With high contrast mode enabled on my PC certain parts of this application are rendered properly (white-on-black) and some incorrectly (black-on-white). The bits that are correct are the native components (JButton, JLabel and whatnot) and third party components from the likes of JIDE. The incorrect bits are custom components and renderers developed in-house without consideration for high-contrast mode. Clearly it's possible to detect when high-contrast mode is enabled. How do I do this?

• How can I launch a missile?

  I am working on an open-source missile launcher application. I have added a big red button to a Form that says "Launch Missile". When I click the button, the event handler gets called. From the event handler I call a method named LaunchMissile(). So far so good, but how do you launch a missile from C# code? Will I have to write this code myself or is there an API or third party library for launching missiles? Please add sample code for various launch scenarios: orbit, moon, mars, etc.

• Consolidate the same image used multiple times in a PDF.

  I am generating PDF documents using DevExpress XtraReports. I am using the same image over and over (in rows of status lights). The PDF generated seems to duplicate the image definition for each image included. I would prefer if it included the image once and referenced it wherever it needed another copy - this would drastically reduce the size of my PDF docs. Is there any way to achieve this using DevExpress or even post processed via a third party application. Any help is appreciated.

• How do I wrap a selection with an HTML tag in Visual Studio?

  This seems like the most basic question in the world, but damned if I can find an answer. Is there a keyboard shortcut, either native to Visual Studio or through Code Rush or other third-party plug-in, to wrap the current selection with an HTML tag? I'm tired of typing the opening tag, cutting the misplaced closing tag to the clipboard, moving the cursor, and pasting it at the end where it belongs. Update: This is how TextMate handles surrounding a selection with a tag. Frankly, I'm stunned that Visual Studio doesn't seem to have a similar feature. Creating a macro or snippet for every conceivable tag I might want to use seems absurd.

So is there any chance I can arrange 3 entities: Subject, Grade and Pupil in that way on a simple DataGrid to show Pivot data like: ...........Math....Sports.... M.Kramer...A.......C......... B.Jonson...D.......A......... Does the binding for example work on the RowHeader with properties of a custom object/entity ? And would sorting destroy the whole relations between the entities ? • How to get Screen Shot / Screen Capture from Web user on MVC site?

  I've seen a few different apps that allow users to take screen shots on their PC and then the utility will automatically upload the image to the web server. I'd like to incorporate this type of functionality into a new MVC site. I could certainly just allow the user to upload their own image, but it'd be cleaner if they could click Capture Screen Shot and the image would be uploaded automatically. My team is using ASP.NET MVC2 with a SQL back end database. We are certainly willing to look into 3rd party components (activeX based, etc.) that will allow us to achieve this.

• returning a memoryStream as a string

  What is wrong with this statement? return new ASCIIEncoding().GetString(memoryStream.ToArray()); I know about the Dispose pattern, have checked out the underlying memoryStream and seen that there is nothing really happening in the dispose. So why shouldn't I allow one of my developers to do this. The aim is to make the code succinct and not create references that are not required, Hopefully getting the Garbage Collector to kick in soon as. Its just niggling me, I feel that the memoryStream lets the party down, when compared to what the other streams do and why they implement the IDispose. Can someone please give me a good reason not to allow the code above. I got a gut feeing about the code not being right but need some back up. :)

In MyApp.WebBase I have the rest of fonctionality(Controllers, domain(entities, repositories, services)). Now the question is the following: I want to give to third party html coder access only to MyApp.Web source code in order he to be able to compile the application locally and see the results. By other hand the developer team shoul have access to full source code. The problem is that in order the html coder to be able to compile the application locally he need in his project the references to the MyApp.WebBase.dll Can anyone help me? Thanks.

• Controlling azure worker roles concurrency in multiple instance

  I have a simple work role in azure that does some data processing on an SQL azure database. The worker basically adds data from a 3rd party datasource to my database every 2 minutes. When I have two instances of the role, this obviously doubles up unnecessarily. I would like to have 2 instances for redundancy and the 99.95 uptime, but do not want them both processing at the same time as they will just duplicate the same job. Is there a standard pattern for this that I am missing? I know I could set flags in the database, but am hoping there is another easier or better way to manage this. Thanks

• Why would a error get thrown inside my try-catch?

  I'm pushing a copy of our application over to a new dev server (IIS7) and the application is blowing up on a line inside of a try-catch block. It doesn't happen locally, it actually obey's the rules of a try-catch block, go figure. Any idea why this would be happening? Shouldn't it just be failing silently? Is there something environmental I need to enable/disable? Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. • Wpf- Is there any way to disable some of the default hotkeys in a RichTextBox?

  I have several keybindings in my text editing application that no longer work now that I have switched from using a regular textbox to using a richtextbox. This is because the wpf richtextbox has several default hokeys such as "Ctrl+1", "Ctrl+2", and "Ctrl+5". My keybindings are defined in a view that contains the view that the richtextbox is in. I can't move the keybindings to the richtextbox; Is there any fix for this problem? Other than using a third-party control or creating my own richtextbox from textboxbase.

• What's the official Microsoft way to track counts of dynamic controls to be reconstructed upon Postback?

  When creating dynamic controls based on a data source of arbitrary and changing size, what is the official way to track exactly how many controls need to be rebuilt into the page's control collection after a Postback operation (i.e. on the server side during the ASP.NET page event lifecycle) specifically the point at which dynamic controls are supposed to be rebuilt? Where is the arity stored for retrieval and reconstruction usage? By "official" I mean the Microsoft way of doing it. There exist hacks like Session storage, etc but I want to know the bonafide or at least Microsoft-recommended way. I've been unable to find a documentation page stating this information. Usually code samples work with a set of dynamic controls of known numbers. It's as if doing otherwise would be tougher. Update: I'm not inquiring about user controls or static expression of declarative controls, but instead about dynamically injecting controls completely from code-behind, whether they be mine, 3rd-party or built-in ASP.NET controls.

  I am trying to automate some of the build process for my asp.net apps by creating the virtual directories it needs and setting all their settings in a batch file. So far I have been able to figure out how to create virtual directories, but how to do you configure them beyond that? For example I need to be able to set them as an application, set the default document, change framework version, turn on integrated authentication, etc. Does anyone know of any scripts that can do all this without a third party utility? Does the adsutil.vbs admin script do any of this?

• ado.net slow updating large tables

  The problem: 100,000+ name & address records in an access table (2003). Need to iterate through the table & update detail with the output from a 3rd party dll. I currently use ado, and it works at an acceptable speed (less than 5 minutes on a network share). We will soon need to update to access 2007 and its 'non jet' accdb format to maintain compatability with clients. I've tried using ado.net datsets, but updating the records takes hours! We process 5-10 of these tables per day - so this cannot be a solution. Any ideas on the fastest way to update individual records using ado.net? Surely we didn't take such a hugh backward step with ado.net? Any help would be appreciated.

  I'm getting reports that my app is causing a GPF on some Vista machines. The error message is something like this: access violation at 0x75784062 ( tried to write to 0x00000006) In order to fix this, I first need to know exactly who is causing this GPF: my main exe, some third party component, one of my own activex components, a dll, etc... How can I find this out? What tools can pinpoint the exact module that caused this mess? Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS My app is coded in VB6 and my activex controls are written in Delphi 2007.

  I have a third-party project type in Visual Studio which for some reason only supports the .NET Platform configuration for the build, for all other (standard C#) projects in the solution I only have AnyCPU. Unfortunately, ever since upgrading to VS 2010 it produces following error when built : Error 39 The OutputPath property is not set for project 'ReferencedBusinessProject.csproj'. Please check to make sure that you have specified a valid combination of Configuration and Platform for this project. Configuration='Debug' Platform='.NET'. This error may also appear if some other project is trying to follow a project-to-project reference to this project, this project has been unloaded or is not included in the solution, and the referencing project does not build using the same or an equivalent Configuration or Platform.
