• How do I catalog files on several external hard drives that I want to store off-line? OSX

  My partner, an artist, has more than 10 external hardisks both USB and firewire and every 2-3 months a new one has to be added (She's working with videos and pictures) currently its 10TB and growing so too much for a affordable NAS. Right now the files are not indexed and I think can not be searched with spotlight because not all drives can be connected at the same time. So if she wants to search for a file, she has to guess which disk/disks (based mostly on the date) and then search several drives. Now I'm looking for a solution to index/catalog the drives, something like GentibusCD Cathy Disclib (all these solutions are unfortunately Windows only) Is there any software for OSX that will catalog all the hard drives, so she can search the catalog, find the files, and get the ID of the disk / disk name that has the content? Preferably something with a GUI so my partner can also use it easily Preferably with Thumbnails for pictures/videos (But even an equivalent to "tree /F /A" would be better than nothing)

Can you guess what is the issue by analyzing the following details, My PC is joined to a domain and using proxy settings, and the logged in user having administrator privileges. • Disable/configure Back and Forward through mouse wheel in Internet Explorer

  I have a problem with Internet Explorer (version 7 on Windows XP). Sometimes (not always) when you use the mouse wheel to scroll a page up/down it instead chooses to go back or forth in the web browsing history. This behavior is the same as when you hold the shift-key simultaneously using the wheel. My guess is that Internet Explorer somehow gets misled by something and thinks that I'm actually pressing shift. This is in turn maybe an artifact of the fact that this particular session is a remote-desktop session originating from Linux (Ubuntu). Needless to say the problem can be quite irritating and the alternative of completely turning off the wheel functionality doesn't seem like an option as other applications would suffer greatly from this. Anyway back to my question(s): Is it possible to map the shift+wheel to a simple wheel event for Internet Explorer? Is it possible to disable the shift+wheel event for Internet Explorer? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

• Green bar on top of every (web) video, distorted colors too

  Hey since a few days I have a problem with some videos I watch on the web (youtube, vimeo etc). There is a green bar on the top of the video and the colors are distorted, it looks like they are somehow shifted. I am not sure since when this problem appeared, I guess it might have been an update for the flash player. Anyways, I found a workaround. Disabling the hardware acceleration helps. right click on video - settings - disable hardware acceleration. After reloading of the page the green bar is gone. The problem is taht this setting doesn't seem to be persistent and so I have to disable it again on every other video. How can I make this setting permanent or how to get rid of the green bar alltogether? (I will add a screenshot later)

• What causes random clicking/navigation sound while PC is idle?

  On my Dell D630 laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3, I randomly hear the "Windows Navigation Start.wav" played. This happens even if the only application active on the PC at the time is Microsoft Outlook and no one is touching the keyboard or touchpad. The start navigation sound IS enabled for Internet Explorer (I have IE 7 installed), but it is not running (no window open, anyway). The clicks are rapid, as if being executed automatically by a script or process, and they always come in threes: "click-click, click". I don't see any changes on the display and I don't know how to figure out what's running that could cause this. I have tried to leave Windows Task Manager open in the hope that I'll see a process name jump to the top of the list briefly, but it doesn't happen that often and I guess I'm not quick enough. The PC is slower than I think it should be, but System Idle Process is at 96 - 99 during the event, and for most of the time when I'm not actually using the machine. Any ideas?

• How to bypass Forefront TMG for downloading from Adobe Cloud

  I hope that this question has not been asked as I've spent a couple of days googling around trying to find a solution. I have one computer that needs to download from Adobe Cloud to install applications like Photoshop etc... The issue I'm having is that Adobe uses a download manager program (AdobeApplicationManager.exe) that just keeps incrementing the time left on the download of any app like Photoshop. Is there a way to allow just the download manager from that one computer to bypass any filtering settings in Forefront TMG 2010? I have very little knowledge of servers / ISA servers / Forefront TMG and have been thrown into this position by luck I guess. Any help with this would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

• Web Filter For Multiple Networks

  I have been using a Barracuda web filter 310 in our network and I have just had enough of it. It does not support trunking and we have several networks that have users that need to be web filtered. (I guess if everyone just did their flippin jobs I would not have this issue) but the management wants me to get it resolved. Does anyone know the top five web filters that are better than the barracuda web filters that support network trunking so that I can have multiple domains and subnets going through it? For browsers, I can specify proxy server in the preferences/options dialog, and other applications may be able to configure proxy servers in config files. For general purpose, can I invoke a command using a specific proxy? Like following: $ proxy-exec --type sock5 --server 1.2.3.4:8000 -- wget/ftp ... I'm using Ubuntu Maverick. P.S. In win32, it can be implemented by hijacking the socket dlls, maybe, I'm not familiar with Linux programming, but I guess it's possible in Linux. though.

• Windows Server 2008 r2 FTP blocking outside connections

  I have a windows server 2008r2 running IIS 7.5. I am trying to setup a FTP-server in IIS but I'm running into some annoying problems. Setting up the server works fine but when I try to connect from a remote client the connection times out. I have tried to connect to the FTP-server from the localhost and it works flawlessly. I figured that it should be some trouble with the firewall so I went into firewall settings and disabled the Public Profile and my remote connections worked! In my inbound rules there are rules for FTP-connections to allow all profiles etc. I guess they are made automatically when setting up the FTP-server. Anyone got any idea how to allow remote connections without turning off the public firewall?

• Install wireless router with cable modem - need authentication server?

  I've bought a wireless router which I'm installing with a Telstra BigPond cable modem for a friend. As part of the setup I've got to a screen requesting username / password / authentication server for the cable modem They have contacted Telstra who supply the username / password and say that is all they need. They dont know anything about an authentication server. I guess if I dont get anything more here I'll try what it says on whirlpool and see what happens.

• Behaviour of disabling "Allow non-administrators to receive notifications" GPO

  Hi everyone, As the title suggests, I'm trying to figure out the specific behaviour of the following GPO when disabled: Administrative Templates Windows Components Allow non-administrators to receive update notifications We've just started using WSUS, and have added a few machines for testing. At the moment, this is set to Enabled. The problem with this setting is it seems to allow users to opt out of certain updates if they deselect the checkbox after hitting custom install. My main concern with disabling this setting is this: Does it stop non-admins from getting the installs deployed to them? My guess would be that it will just install them silently at the set scheduled time, suppressing any prompts and ensuring they don't get the opportunity to cancel them (this is what I want). My worry is that non-admin users will never get updates pushed to them unless an admin goes and logs on to their machine (not what I want, and seems like a silly situation to be in). Computer A is connected to the internet, computer B and C are not setup for internet access currently but I guess its possible with some kind of setting they would eventually be able to access the internet and this is what I would like to prevent. • Running a VM off of an external HD via USB

  Is it viable to run (i.e. reference the vmx/vhd directly from the mounted drive) a VM (vmware running Windows Seven) off of an external HD via USB? I mean, I know it's possible, but I guess I'm asking if USB provides enough bandwidth for normal usage... If so, are there any particular brands that may be better or worse? I know that ESATA would be a more viable setup, but my laptop doesn't have an ESATA port. Currently I use the VM to segregate all of my work development servers and software from my main machine; so I will be running all development servers and tools on the VM directly.

• Tomcat access logs - are failed requests included?

  We have a RESTful web service (Java, hosted in Tomcat on Ubuntu on Amazon EC2). From time to time it fails (not every week). When it fails, Java CPU consumption goes to 100% and it takes all available memory. It does not finish by itself. I have to restart the server. There is nothing suspicious in Tomcat access logs. I guess one of our users could submit a very "heavy" request which brought the server down. Is it possible this request is not in Tomcat logs since it never finished?

• Ubuntu Connect Button Disabled, cannot connect

  I'm trying to connect to my school network from Ubuntu 12. The network is WPA encrypted and I can connect just fine if the network manager establishes a connection automatically. However, when I get disconnected and try to reconnect a username and password prompt pops up. The credentials are already stored and are autofilled in correctly, but the Connect button is disabled so I can't actually connect to the network. What can I do? The only guess I've found so far is the password is too short and Ubuntu is expecting a full WPA key. I don't administer the school network though so I certainly can't change that.

• How to reliably run a batch job every 5 seconds?

  I'm building an application where the sending of all notifications (email, SMS, fax) will be asynchronous. The application will write the notifications to the database, and a batch job will read these notifications and send them with the appropriate transport. I was first reading at ways to run cron faster than the minute, and realized this was a bad idea. The batch scripts are written in PHP, and I guess that writing a proper daemon would be quite an overhead (though I'm open to any suggestion, as PHP car run indefinitely as well). What I have in mind is a solution that would: Run the PHP script every 5 seconds Check that the previous run has finished, or abort (never 2 concurrent batches running) Kill the script if live for more than x minutes (a security in case it hangs) Start with the system (if a reboot occurs) Any idea how to do this?

• Debian PPTP VPN can't get out to the internet

  I've setup a Debian pptp server which seems to be running fine. I can successfully access the local services on the server when connected to the VPN, but I cannot go out of the LAN, i.e. I cannot just go to any server out on the internet. I guess this is come kind of routing issue that won't allow me to use the server as a gateway? I couldn't really find any articles or similar that could tell me how to set this up properly.   I've setup a VPN server using Debians pptpd. This all works, but I want to restrict incoming connections so they can only access ports on the VPN server and not get access to other machines on the VPN servers local network. I'm guessing this is a firewall rule? but i'm new to linux so am struggling a bit... ---- Additional info ----- The VPN Server is also hosting an SVN server, which is its real purpose, and the only service I want it to expose to incoming connections. I guess I could expose the SVN server directly, but I'm not confident that I could secure this correctly, so a VPN seemed to give an additional layer of security.

• How much space do NTFS hardlinks/symlinks occupy?

  Well, I guess it must be something proportional to the original filename plus the new filename for symlinks, and only the new filename for hardlinks, but how does this affect the disk space exactly? I just made a folder with about a hundred thousand symbolic links in it, and the folder still reported 0 bytes usage. I may be mistaken, but I even think the free capacity of the drive remained the same. Then I permanently deleted the folder and the sizes still stayed the same. Could I fill up a hard disk just with symlinks? Or does NTFS have limitations in that no more than x symlinks are allowed on one drive/in one folder, so the capacity of the drive cannot be reached?

• Slow write speeds on new Gigabit home file server

  So I finally got all my parts delivered to setup a home file/backup server this week. It's currently running Ubuntu Server and I'm using Samba to share files on my network. The server currently has a 2TB WD Green drive in it connected to a Asus M5A78L-M This is then connected via CAT6a to my new Gigabit switch (TP-Link TL-SG1005D). My home desktop is then also connected to this switch and again also through CAT6a cable. Currently when transfering files I will get a perfect 100MB/s read from the server to my Windows machine. When copying from my Windows machine to the server I get around 30/38MB/s. I know this drive is capable is faster speeds so would anybody have an idea of where the bottleneck is? Any help would be greatly appreciated :) EDIT: I have found ftp's write speed is much closer to what my Samba read speed is so I'm going to give it a guess that is a software problem rather than hardware

• How to play audio through a bluetooth headset in Windows 7.

  I recently did an in-place upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 RTM. For the most part, things have went brilliantly. The only issue I've been facing is regarding my bluetooth headset, a Dell BH200. The laptop is an Inspiron 1720. I can get Windows 7 to pair with the headset, and even get the bluetooth settings to show that there is stereo audio available. The problem is that the bluetooth headset never shows up in my sound output devices list. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the bluetooth drivers from Dell, tried turning on/off all of the features of the headset, removing the bluetooth driver and letting windows redetect and install but nothing has worked so far. I guess I should mention that the headset worked fine in Vista. Anyone have any ideas?

  I´m trying to update my D-link Dir-600 router with the dd-wrt firmware. I´ve searched for it at the site and found that: Revision A1, B1 and B2 are supported, while C isn´t. Now my router has this information on the back: P/N IIR600GNA .... C1G H/W Ver: C1 F/W Ver: 3.01 So I guess the H/W Ver is the revision, and it´s C... so it´s a lost cause? Or maybe because it´s not just C but C1 I could do something with it? Thanks!

  I am using redis as a cache server. Can I somehow configure multiple redis servers, that the cache is fully functional (read/write) even if some of them go offline? I looked into master-slave, but the problem I see there is, that if the master fails, and I allow writes to the slaves, they get overwritten once the master is up again. Now the master just serves the old data. The only solution I could come up was disabling write-to-disc, but that sucks as I loose everything if I have to restart the master. And I guess, slaves wouldn't be synced anymore if the master is gone.

  Hi there! Caspol.exe is used to modify security policy for the machine policy level, the user policy level, and the enterprise policy level. What I use it for, is setting up av trust between the client and an area on some server. I went through the scripts on the server, and found an interesting script that sets up full trust via caspol between a client in one zone, and an application on the server. That script has been running every day, for every logon, since it was implemented. Can someone tell me the consequences? I guess there is about 500 trusts between the client computer and the server, all which points to the same thing.

• rsyslog server - Can you split up and organize logs?

  I recently setup one of our servers as an rsyslog server. I now have our firewall setup to log everything to that rsyslog server. But there doesn't seem to be an organization of the logs. All the firewall logs are just being dumped into the /var/log/messages on the rsyslog server. I guess I was maybe expecting them to at least be in a machine specific log file or directory. How can I organize the incoming logging? If I setup 20 servers to all log everything to a central rsyslog server, I really don't want everything being dumped into one big file or a few files. How can I setup rsyslog to tell it where to log what? Like if all the logs for a specific server were in it's own directory/file, etc... Is this possible?
