• How to configure AutoMapper if not ASP.net Application?

  I'm using AutoMapper in a number of projects within my solution. These projects may be deployed independantly, across multiple servers. In the documentation for AutoMapper it says: If you're using the static Mapper method, configuration only needs to happen once per AppDomain. That means the best place to put the configuration code is in application startup, such as the Global.asax file for ASP.NET applications. Whilst some of the projects will be ASP.net - most of these are class libraries / windows services. Where should I be configuring my mappings in this case?

• Creating many new instances vs reusing them?

  I have multiple business entities in VB.NET Windows Forms application. Right now they are instanced on application startup and used when needed. They hold descriptions of business entities and methods for storing and retrieving data. To cut the long story short, they are somewhat heavy objects to construct (they have some internal dictionaries and references to other objects) created and held in one big global variable called "BLogic". Should I refactor this so that each object is created when needed and released when out of scope? Then every event on UI will probably create a few of this objects. Should I strive to minimize creation of new objects or to minimize number of static and global objects? Generally I am trying to minimize the scope of every variable but should I treat this business logic objects specially?

• PHP Extension using libtidy compiles, but does not load

  I wrote an extension in C++ that uses libtidy, and it runs perfectly under PHP when I compile PHP --with-tidy. However, it would be nice to have the extension run on a vanilla PHP. When I try to use the extension, I get something like: PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'extension.so': undefined symbol: tidyCleanAndRepair in Unknown on line 0 and the extension is not loaded. Obviously, the official tidy extension works fine. I have the relevant libtidy development packages installed on the system, and it compiles+links without a problem. I have tried to look through the code for the tidy extension, but it is a huge mass of macros - copying pieces at random felt like cargo code. Besides linking to the library with PHP_ADD_LIBRARY_WITH_PATH(tidy, $TIDY_LIBDIR, TIDY_SHARED_LIBADD), Is there a PHP extension or C statement that fixes this error? Thanks in advance!!

• Local Data Cache - How do I refresh the local db when I add fields to remote db?

  I'm using a Local Data Cache in an ASP.NET 3.5 environment. I made a change in my main database by adding a new field. I double click on my .SYNC file in my project to startup the Local Data Cache wizard again. The wizard starts and I click OK with the hopes that it'll re-query my database and add the new field to the local database file. Instead, I get an error saying "Synchronizing the databae failed with the message: Unable to enumerate changes at the DbServerSyncProvider..." The only way I know to get things working again is to delete the .SYNC file along with the local database and start it from scratch. There's got to be an easier way... anyone know it?

• Why is the EntityManager in my GAE + Spring (+graniteds) project reset to null?

  Hi all, I'm having a problem with autowiring my EntityManager. Actually at server startup I can see that the injection works ok, though when trying to use my EntityManager it appears to be null again. @Component public class DataDaoImpl { protected EntityManager entityManager; @Autowired public void setEntityManager(EntityManager entityManager) { System.out.println("Injecting "+entityManager); //works! this.entityManager = entityManager; } public void createData(String key, String value) { System.out.println("In createData entityManager is "+entityManager); //entityManager null!? ... Output: Injecting org.datanucleus.store.appengine.jpa.DatastoreEntityManager@a60d19 The server is running at http://localhost:8888/ In createData entityManager is null So somehow the autowired entityManager is reset to null when trying to use it. • How are dll's loaded by the CLR?

  My assumption was always that the CLR loaded all of the dlls it needed on startup of the app domain. However, I've written an example that makes me question this assumption. I start up my application and check to see how many modules are loaded. Process[] ObjModulesList; ProcessModuleCollection ObjModulesOrig; //Get all modules inside the process ObjModulesList = Process.GetProcessesByName("MyProcessName"); // Populate the module collection. ObjModulesOrig = ObjModulesList[0].Modules; Console.WriteLine(ObjModulesOrig.Count.ToString()); I then repeate the exact same code and my count is different. The additional dll is C:\WINNT\system32\version.dll. I'm really confused as to why the counts would be different. Could someone please elaborate on what the clr is doing and how it's loading these thing, and by what logic it's doing so?

  Hi all, I want to edit the timeout value of 'Time to display recovery options when needed' without using the UI display option. To navigate, Right click on 'Mycomputer' - Properties - Advanced tab - click on SETTINGS of 'Startup and recovery' = 2nd displayed check box. The value thought to be in c:\boot.ini file, but it has value of other timeout 'Time to display other operating systems'. After some searching, i found that 'c:\windows\bootstat.dat' file holds the timeout value for 'Time to display recovery options when needed'... but, i am not able to decode the .dat file or edit that file.. any suggestions would he helpful for me.. • XML serialization and MS/Mono portability

  I'm trying to have classes serialized using MS runtime and Mono runtime. While using MS runtime everything goes fine, but using Mono I give me some exception and program startup. The following exception are thrown: There was an error reflecting a type: System.TypeInitializationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a type: System.InvalidOperationException (a class) There was an error reflecting a field: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException < 0 (an array of classes) The binary was compiled using MS SDK, but I don't think this is the problem. What's going on? .NET shouln't be portable? How to solve these exceptions?

• Cheap windows driver signing for 64 bit Windows 7

  I need to install the libusb-win32 driver on Windows 7 64 bit machines. This driver is open source so it is not digitally signed so I want to do this my self but I wonder if this can be done WITHOUT paying lot of money. Is it possible to use a certificate which is NOT signed by Verisign or GlobalSign? Maybe self-signed or by using StartSSL instead? And if yes, how do I do it? According to this howto I have to use a "cross-certificate" (And there are only six available on the Microsoft list and most of them are for CAs which are no longer active) I don't care if the user is confronted with a warning message. I can even accept if the user has to install a special CA certificate first. I only require that the driver runs without manually disabling the signature check on each windows startup.

  I'm running nginx 1.3.5 under windows seven, I need to execute nginx directly from a read-only media (CD or DVD), but when I want to run it, it fails with this error: nginx: [alert] could not open error log file: CreateFile() "logs/error.log" fail ed (5: Access is denied) 2012/08/28 13:52:46 [emerg] 5604#2864: CreateDirectory() "J:\nginx-1.3.5/temp/client_body_temp" failed (5: Access is denied) where J is my CD-ROM drive letter. I've changed nginx.conf to disable logging completely, but seems anyway it still tries to build a file named 'error.log' in '/logs' folder & some extra temporary contents in '/temp' folder at the startup, so I want to change 'logs' & 'temp' directory path to windows temp folder (%temp%), but I dont have any idea that how can I do it. Also I want to know why nginx still creates 'logs/error.log' after disableing error logging ?

• What is the best way to manage application screens in SWT?

  I'm creating a standalone SWT desktop application that has around 10 different screens (few wizards, help, forms, etc). Some elements on screen don't change at all (like header, background, etc) and there is a working area that changes depending on what is clicked, etc. What is the best way to manage application screens? Do I need to create all screen at startup and then show/hide them depending on what is clicked? Or do I need to create those screens dynamically? Also, I couldn't find any way to show/hide a Composite, do I need to dispose it and then create again? What is the best practice? I'm new to SWT developing outside of Eclipse so any help would be beneficial.

• Using ASP.NET Session for Lifetime Management (Unity)

  I am considering using Unity to manage the lifetime of a custom user class instance. I am planning on extending the LifetimeManager with a custom ASP.NET session manager. What I want to be able to do is store and retrieve the currently logged in user object from my custom classes, and have Unity get the instance of User from the session object in ASP.NET, or (when in a Win32 project) retrieve it statically or from the current thread. So far my best solution is to create a static instance of my Unity container on startup, and use the Resolve method to get my User object from each of my classes. However, this seems to create a dependency on the unity container in my other classes. What is the more "Unity" way of accomplishing this goal? I would like to be able to read/replace the current User instance from any class.

• mod_perl memory leak

  Hello, I recently discovered that one of our sites has a memory leak in it, it's very strange because it happened all of the sudden. I've used GTop to measure the memory size per process and it tells me that the real value is somewhere around 65 MB (on the server) per request and and additional 5 MB shared. I tried preloading the modules in the startup.pl file a indicated in the performance tuning article for mod_perl. Nothing happened if fact the shared memory decreased down to 3.7 MB, in this situation I thought that my application is leaking memory do before any line of code got executed I measured the memory just to find out that the total value is in fact 64 MB, my questions are: Is there a default preallocation of memory for each process? Is there a configuration issue? Is mod_perl leaking memory ? Thank you very much.

• How do I fix SVC-FILWRT on Windows?

  I have to do some processing (enhancing metadata) on the XML document that are on my Marklogic database. For that I have created a new HTTP server that is pointing towards the database. Using that HTTP server, I write a XQuey that loop through all the XML documents in Marklogic database and send these XML documents to particular URL that reads the content from that document, append some metadata and then store back to ML. This is something I have tried on Linux platform with same version of Marklogic and it works great for me. But now, when I am trying the same on window platform (Windows 7 Enterprise addition) and it's not working. Approaches I tried to resolve that: Running Marklogic Server as "Run as Administrator". Putting HTTP server's Base directory into D:/ directory i.e. directory that does not have windows installed within it. Above same with putting forest to D:/ directory. • How to deploy a Java Swing application with an embedded JavaDB database?

  I have implemented an Java Swing application that uses an embedded JavaDB database. The database need to be stored somewhere and the database tables need to be created at the first run. What is the preferred way to do these procedures? Should I always create the database in the local directory, and first check if the database file exist, and if it doesn't exist let the user create the tables (or at least show a message that the tables will be created). Or should I let the user choose a path? but then I have to save the path somewhere. Should I save the path with Preferences.systemRoot();, and check if that variable is set on startup? If the user choses a path and save it in the Preferences, can I get any problems with user permissions? or should it be safe wherever the user store the database? Or how do I handle this? Any other suggestions for this procedure?

• How to turn off Video Acceleration programatically.

  Im using the Windows Media Player OCX in a program runned on hundreds of computers (dedicated). I have found out that when video acceleration is turned on to "full", on some computers it will cause the video to fail to play correct, with green squares between movies and so on. Turn the acceleration to "None" and everything is fine. This program is runned on ~800 computers that will autoupdate my program. So I want to add to the startup to my program that it turns off the video acceleration. The question is, how do I turn off video Acceleration Programatically? All computers are running XP and at least the second service pack. It would take me ages to manually logg in to all those computers and change that setting so thats why I want the program to be able to do it automagically for me.

• SQLite REGEXP initializer not working in production on Heroku

  I am using this to create a REGEXP in SQLite with rails because SQLite does not support REGEXP. When running this app on Heroku rather than the localhost it does not work. Is the initializer not being run when the app launches? • Can you specify if aspnet_compiler.exe creates a debug or release build?

  I wish to compile my asp.net MVC application using aspnet_compiler.exe from the comandline to speed up cold startup. I'm wondering how it determines if it should do a release or debug build. Is it always release? Does it depend on what the web.config file says when you run aspnet_compiler.exe? What happens to an application that's been compiled w/ aspnet_compiler.exe if someone changed the bug attribute in the web.config file after it has been published? Any clarification on this would be greatly appreciated.

• How do I enable automatic reloading of view files in development mode in JRuby on Rails?

  I am developing an app in JRuby on Rails. For some reason, when I edit the view files, the development JRuby Mongrel server doesn't reload them. The perplexing thing is that after editing the controller files, the server reloads them just fine on the next request. This would be annoying even when using MRI Ruby, however starting up JRuby Mongrel after every view edit is much slower, and much more annoying. (Note that once it starts up it's quite fast, the only issue is startup--the JVM has to load up every time I start JRuby Mongrel.) I'm running JRuby 1.5.0, Rails 2.3.5, and Java 6.

• JSF tags not being rendered as HTML

  I'm following the Java EE firstcup tutorial using Netbeans and Glassfish. When I execute the JSF web tier I've been instructed to code, the browser gets the same JSF markup coded in the .xhtml file, and the tags are not rendered as HTML tags. I know this by using the view source code in my browser. For example, for this code: <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xmlns:f="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" xmlns:h="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html"> <h:head> <title>Page title here</title> </h:head> <h:body> <h2> <h:outputText value="#{bundle.WelcomeMessage}" /> </h2> </h:body> </html> The browser should get something like: <html ...> <head> <title>Page title here</title> </head> <body> <h2> the welcome message goes here </h2> </body> </html> Right? Well, my browser is getting jsf code (the first piece of code above) and not the html code (the second piece of code above). It seems to be a configuration problem in netbeans or glassfish but don't know what. Any ideas? • How can I request local pages in the background of an ASP.NET MVC app?

  My ASP.NET MVC app needs to run a set of tasks at startup and in the background at a regular interval. I have implemented each task as a controller action and listed the app-relative path to the action in the database. I implemented a TaskRunner process that gets the urls from the database and requests each one at a regular interval using WebRequest.Create, but this throws a UriFormatException. I cannot use this answer or any code that plucks values from HttpContext.Current.Request without getting an HttpException with the message "Request is not available in this context". The Request object is not available because my code uses System.Threading.Timer to do background processing, as recommended here. Here are my questions: Is there really no way to make local web requests within an ASP.NET web app? Is there really no way to dynamically ascertain the root path to the web app even using static dependencies in ASP.NET? I was trying to avoid storing the app's root path in the database (as FogBugz does with its "Maintenance Path"), but is this best option?
