  These days, more and more people watching video online rather than reading. Steve Jobs once said people don’t read anymore. Well, I love books and still read a lot either on books, magazine, iPad, MacbookPro, or whatever the medium shows me letters! But I have to admit, sometimes it’s much easier to understand especially something like How-To by just watching video clips than reading it. And this is why we started our BI Publisher Channel at Youtube last summer. Since then we have uploaded over 10 video clips so far and and now we’re gearing up to add more and more clips. Now, we’re in a middle of finishing up our work for the next 11G 1st patchset release, which should be coming soon and will have a lot of great new features that I can’t wait to talk to you guys about. And of course we’re preparing introduction and How-Top clips. And we've heard from the likes of: "Uncle Bob" Martin - Who warned us about "the consequences of making a mess". Michael C. Feathers - Who gave us guidance for 'Working Effectively With Legacy Code'. So certainly the software engineering community is aware of these issues. But I feel like our aggregate society does not appreciate how these issues can plague working systems and applications. As Steve McConnell notes: ...Unlike financial debt, technical debt is much less visible, and so people have an easier time ignoring it. If this is true, and I believe that it is, then I fear that governments and businesses may defer regular maintenance and fortification against hackers until it is too late. [Much like NYC and the steam pipes.] My Question: Is there a way that we can avoid the software equivalent of NYC and the steam pipes?

  Let me start by saying I have absolutely no inside knowledge, neither through the MVP program or any other means, that is fuelling what I’m about to write. This is entirely conjecture fuelled by speculation and too much Soporro beer at a fantastic Japanese restaurant tonight. Still, I present to you… D’Arcy’s Worldwide Partner Conference 2012 Predictions!!! So what can we expect to be announced at this year’s WPC? Much more than last year I’m hoping! Last year was sort of encouraging the troops to carry on with the Windows 7 messaging even with Windows 8 looming in the distance. It also showed Microsoft’s slant towards Private Cloud in addition to Azure. This year, we’re going to see a shift to a battle cry – Windows 8 is Coming, Windows 8 is Coming! I expect we’re going to hear an RTM date for Windows 8 from Steve Ballmer tomorrow, in addition to dates surrounding Windows Server 2012. We’ll also hear some announcement around Windows Phone 8, but I’m not really sure what – that whole piece is still quite muddy; are we going to actually *see* Windows Phone 8 devices this week? That would be great, but I imagine those types of announcements might be left for Build. Speaking of Build, I’m expecting an announcement on a date for a Build conference this Fall, probably late October. If any announcements are going to be made around Office 15, the schedule isn’t hinting at it. In fact, other than Office 365 there’s not much mention of Office in the conference sessions – either a red herring, or telling that Microsoft has another announcement coming later. The tagline of the conference is “A New Era. Together.” It’s obvious Microsoft is wanting to leverage WPC to rally their partners to carry the Windows 8 banner into the field of battle this fall when it ships. D

• VS2012 Coded UI Test closes browser by default

  *** Thanks to Steve St. Jean for asking this question and Shubhra Maji for answering this question on the ALM champs list *** 01 – Introduction The default behaviour of coded UI tests running in an Internet Explorer browser has changed between MTM 2010 and MTM 2012. When running a Coded UI test recorded in MTM 2012 or VS 2012 at the end of the test execution the instance of the browser is closed by default. 02 – Description Let’s take an example. As you can see the CloseDinnerNowWeb() method is commented out.  In VS 2010, upon running this test the browser would be left open after the test execution completes. In VS 2012 RTM the behaviour has changed. At the end of the test run, the IE window is closed even though there is no command from the test to do so. In the example below when the test runs, it opens 2 IE windows to the website. When the test run completes both the windows are closed, even though there is no command in the test to close the window. 03 – How to change the CUIT behaviour not to close the IE window after test execution? This change to this functionality in VS 2012 is by design. It is however possible to rollback the behaviour to how it originally was in VS 2010 i.e. the IE window will not close after the test execution unless otherwise commanded by the test to do so. • M-Audio Delta starts up at wrong sample rate

  When the PC starts my M-Audio Delta 66 is using 48000kHz sampling rate when it is set for 44100 in Envy24. This causes audio to play slower than it should. This is in Kubuntu 14.04 on my new PC using an AMD A8 6500 with 8GB. When I first installed it seemed okay, but at some point it went wrong and has been doing this consistently since then. Kernel is 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 athlon i686 GNU/Linux steve@slarti:~$ cat /proc/asound/card2/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params access: MMAP_INTERLEAVED format: S32_LE subformat: STD channels: 10 rate: 48000 (48000/1) period_size: 441 buffer_size: 3528 I can get it to switch to 44100 if I disable/enable the Delta in Pulseaudio volume control, but I have to do this every day and the sound still seems distorted. I can't see any issues in any of the config or log files I can find. If I boot the PC with a Mint Live USB it starts at 44100 and sound fine. Originally reported on Youtube is playing at the wrong speed - maybe soundcard related, but I'll close that and have this more relevant question instead.

• How do i impress employers with my resume?

  I built a entire website from scratch in 10days which looks and feels professional with the site being unique. The site has features like logging in, sending activation emails, tag/content search (lucence.net), syntax highlighting (prettify) and a diff (one of the js diffs), markup for comments all on this site and autocomplete in a textbox (remember, 10days). I wrote i have 5+ years of C# experience (i could lie and say more but smart employers will know its only 8 years old and 1.1 is very different from what we use now). I had employers REPEATEDLY say they are looking for someone who has more C# experience... wtf. Maybe they don't read my CV, maybe they dont believe it or ignore me because i am not yet a graduate. I laughed when i first read Steve Yegge The Five Essential Phone Screen Questions as i knew all of that (although i still never used graph datastruct nor know much about it). I'm pretty sure competency wise i can do the job. I am also positive no one noticed i have markup, a diff, autocomplete nor email activation/forget password (i offer a test user account). So maybe my site/example work isnt impressive bc you dont realize what is in it. In short i dont think they read my CV or notice my site. How do i impress employers? PS: The problem is i dont get to the interview. I had one and ruined it by speaking too technical to the PM because i was nervous. The other 25+ jobs either didnt contact me or was kind enough to send a rejection email.

• When creating a GUI wizard, should all pages/tabs be of the same size? [closed]

  I understand that some libraries would force me to, but my question is general. If I have a set of buttons at the bottom: Back, Next, Cancel?, (other?), then should their location ever change? If the answer is no, then what do I do about pages with little content? Do I stretch things? Place them in the lone upper left corner? According to Steve Krug, it does not make sense to add anything to GUI that does not need to be there. I understand that there are different approaches to wizards - some have tabs, others do not. Some tabs are lined horizontally at the top; others - vertically on the left. Some do not show pages/tabs, and are simply sequences of dialogs. This is probably a must when the wizard is "non-linear", e.g. some earlier choices can result in branching. Either way the problem is the same - sacrifice on the consistency of the "big picture" (outline of the page/tab + location of buttons), or the consistency of details (some tabs might be somewhat packed; others having very little content). A third choice, I suppose is putting extra effort in the content in order to make sure that organizing the content such that it is more or less evenly distributed from page to page. However, this can be difficult to do (say, when the very first tab contains only a choice of three things, and then branches off from there; there are probably other examples), and hard to maintain this balance if any of the content changes later. Can you recommend a good approach? A link to a relevant good blog post or a chapter of a book is also welcome. Let me know if you have questions.

• Why am I getting [mount error(22): Invalid argument] while trying to mount SMB network drive?

  Disclaimer: I am very new to Linux :) Anyway, onward: I have a fresh instance of Ubuntu Server (12.04.1 LTS) running on my network and I want to mount a network drive to the server so I can access the contents. The network drive is a SAMBA compatible drive running Darwin OS. If I run the following command: smbclient -L //192.168.0.2 -U myuser It prompts me for the password and then displays output similar to: Domain=[SERVER01] OS=[Darwin] Server=[@(#)PROGRAM:smbd PROJECT:smbx-105.4.0] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- Comp Staff's Public Folder Disk CompRaid03 Disk Dropbox Disk Groups Disk IPC$ IPC Public Disk Users Disk compstaff Disk However, when I try and mount the CompRaid03 share, using this command: sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.2/CompRaid03 /mnt/myshare -o username=myuser I get the same password prompt, but after putting the correct password in, I received this error: mount error(22): Invalid argument dmesg | tail returns: [23576.037373] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -22 I don't understand what is wrong with this command. I've managed to mount a share on my current (Windows 8) machine using basically the same command but with a different IP address and share name (obviously). I've spent a good few hours trying to solve this and got no where. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Steve EDIT As suggested I've also trued using "user=" instead of "username=": sudo mount -t cifs //192.168.0.2/CompRaid03 /mnt/svnrepo -o user=myuser This results in the same "Invalid argument" error.

• Zimbra server status showing red in control panel

  I have been having a weird problem with Zimbra(7.1.4_GA_2555.DEBIAN5) lately: On the (web)control panel the status keep changing to red every few days. When this is happens the output of zmcontrol status still shows running: antispam Running antivirus Running imapproxy Running ldap Running logger Running mailbox Running memcached Running mta Running snmp Running spell Running stats Running zmconfigd Running Every thing runs fine except automated mail forwarding from one account to another(which is critical for us). I have been through Zimbra forums and the following ALWAYS fixes the issue: su - zimbra -c "zmprov mcf zimbraLogHostname mail.mydomain.com" /opt/zimbra/libexec/zmsyslogsetup /etc/init.d/rsyslog restart su - zimbra -c "zmcontrol restart" After I run the above commands, the status on control panel turns green and mail forwarding starts to work again BUT only for a few days. Other than the above, everything works fine including Server statistics. Anyone seen this issue before?

• HP Loadrunner failed to start .NET Diagnostics probe

  I've got a HP Diagnostics Server (commander mode) installed in the same PC where HP Loadrunner is. I've installed the .NET probe in the web application server. When I navigate localhost:2006/registrar/health I can see the CommandingServer and three instances of the probe, all in green and connected. Then, when in LoadRunner controller I enable Diagnostics, select the probe and start the scenario, I get the next error: Failed to start J2EE/.NET Diagnostics run. (Facade error: Unable to send 'startRun' notification to probe MyAgent.1347615505142149) I've looked at the firewall logs and the rule that lets the server send commands to the probes has been matched three times. What else could it be what doesn't let me start the probe?

• How to calibrate monitor colors to use 3D glasses?

  I have a pair of red/cyan 3D glasses and when I use them to view youtube's 3D videos or anaglyph images they dont seem to work properly. The two images are not filtered properly by each colored lens. So I guess the problem is my monitor not showing the exact colors needed for my glasses to work. Is there any way to customize/calibrate the monitor's colors for a specific pair of 3D glasses? PS: I also have green/magenta and amber/blue glasses, but the same problem happens.

• Why does my ReadyNas 4200 have a constant beep post disk failure

  Went to check on a high pitched constant beep coming from the server room and discovered that all the LED lights on the disks were black except one which had a constant green. Post a Re-boot nothing changed. Console indicated that that particular drive has failed. Pulled the drive out and BAM everything is fine. Except, the high pitched beep remains. Plan is currently to replace the drive with a new same size drive we happen to have purchased for expansion. My question is, what will this do? Will the NAS accept the new drive as a replacement for the failed one and decide to shut-up? This is my /etc/procmailrc: PATH=/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin MAILDIR=$HOME/.mailspool DEFAULT=$HOME/.mailspool LOGFILE=/dev/pts/0 SHELL=/bin/sh What could be the problem? I'm still pretty green with all the sendmail and procmail stuff as I'm primarily a developer.

• FTP ASCII file from Windows to Mainframe (iSeries) — special characters

  I have a text file created on a Windows machine, the page coding used on the file is 1252 This file is then ftp'd to an iSeries machine for processing As far as I can see, it appears on the iSeries. It has a CCSID of 037. Sometimes this file contains French characters (e.g. é). When this happens, the FTP will fail with a truncation error as the french character gets converted to some extra junk: �. The file is fixed block so the line does get truncated due to the one character turning into 3. I can convert the French characters to characters without the accents before sending but would prefer to keep everything intact. So is there a way to retain them and send the file over properly? I'm very green on iSeries, mainly a Windows guy.

• How to stop intermittent playback on airtunes (iTunes + Airport Express)?

  Is there a definitive answer for how to stop intermittent "skips" or pauses while playing music from iTunes to an airport express connected to my home stereo? When I read other forums I see a wealth of posts that say "I did XYZ and it's fixed" followed by "I tried XYZ and it didn't work." This does not appear to be signal strength related. The green light on the Airport Express does not turn to yellow/orange. Other wireless devices have no trouble connecting at the same or greater distances from the wireless router.

• Win XP Pro SP3 MUP.SYS last driver to load before freeze. Can't boot into XP CD / Recovery Console

  I've tried everything and have even looked at the thread on this site "Fresh installation of XP hangs after MUP.SYS" but nothing. I'm running Memtest86+ v4.00 but no luck (everything looks good) It freezes at windows boot screen, not even 1 green block shows up in the loader. I go into safemode and it stops at MUP.SYS, it's probably not MUP.SYS that is the problem but it's probably the next file that is trying to load or something. The end-user has not installed anything at all that could be problematic. I have pulled the HDD out and put it into another pc and have checked it, nothing suspicious at all. It's just as clean as when I first cleaned it up and secured it. Someone / anyone please help! :) Thank you!

• How to hide distribution group from "All Groups" Address Book in Outlook 2010?

  I'm working with Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 and while writing this post I found another post on the topic but it was for Exchange 2007. It mentioned Address List Segregation which, as it turns out, is not supported in Exchange 2010. So it seems another method is required. I've successfully hidden a distribution group from the GAL by removing the Authenticated Users group but the group is still visible in the Address Book called "All Groups". I would expect it to be hidden in all address books not just the GAL. Are there any other security groups I should remove to hide it from All Groups? To give visibility in the GAL I am manually adding the user (the group is being used for Send As purposes). In the image below the green line represents where the group is visible and the red line indicates the opposite.

• Picasa “sync to web” folders do not stay in sync

  I have multiple folders from the Picasa software that were moved to my Google+ profile using the "sync to web" feature. At some point I noticed that some of these folders were on Google+ and had the green upload arrow in Picasa, however the "sync to web" option was disabled. I tried to re-enable the "sync to web" option and it starts loading but after a few seconds the "sync to web" option is back to disabled. I get no error message, it just switches back to disable. Is there any way I could leave the option enabled? Out of around 80 something albums synced to Google+ only 3-4 are not able to have the "sync to web" option enabled. Thanks.

• Are there any 5.1 surround audio switches on the market?

  (Somewhat related to this question) I have a set of Logitech 5.1 surround speakers, which use 3 stereo 3.5mm TRS connectors (minijacks) to transfer the audio (the typical green/black/orange audio outputs). I have a Griffin Firewave hooked up to my MacBook Pro, and my desktop has a Realtek ALC889 audio chipset. I have looked for a way to, essentially, switch the speaker inputs between my Firewave and my desktop without having to disconnect the cables from one, route them around my desk, and plug them into the other. I'd love to have something like an old Belkin DB-25/LPT switch, but for these audio cables. Of course, purchasing one and soldering my own cables on the connection terminals is always an option, but, is there a reasonably priced 5.1 audio switch (or 3x stereo) on the market that will accomplish the simple task of switching audio outputs between two computers into a set of 5.1 speakers? • DLP projector has odd colors

  At my place of work, we have several different video projectors, but they all use DLP technology, and the colors are wrong: for instance, yellow looks more like green, and all other colors are similarly distorted. Any kind of presentation or collaborative work is hindered by these wrong colors. On the laptop screen, the colors are fine but on the projector (hooked up via normal short VGA cable, and showing the same image at the same time), the colors look wrong. This is not about one specific projector or one specific laptop; it seems that any combination of projector + laptop has the exact same problem. Someone said that DLP is poor technology, but that's not true. I'm using a DLP projector at home (regular PC connected via HDMI) and the colors are excellent. Still, there's some kind of curse on the machinery at work. How can we get decent colors?
