  • IMCEMAILTO and exghost

    - by Steve
One of my associates sent an email to me that was also sent to a client. The client's email address appears to be mangled, however. He says he sent it twice---the first one bounced and the second did not. The email address he sent it to was: [email protected] My searches on Google indicate that the MAILTO could be a bad protocol but I didn't know how the email address would be interpreted by exchange server. What email address was the email sent to, how did IMCEMAILTO get there, and does it have any change of getting delivered?

  • Could local ISP capture my location whenever i launch a VPN to a VPN server?

    - by Ozgun Sunal
I am extremely concerned that my ISP collects any information once I am connected to a VPN server. For instance, as far as I know, when I start a connection to a HotSpotShield VPN server, an IP address is assigned to me just before a successful connection. Besides, I'll be having an extra IP address at the beginning with the TAP Adapter. An encryption tunnel is set up between me and the VPN server. Whenever my request for a website reaches them (VPN server), they decrypt the data and later they encrypt the reply which returns from the web (targeted) server. This works like that. So, the ISP can not see what I am watching, displaying and writing because the connection is encrypted. But, the targeted websites see and record all actions. Still, they can not identify my real IP address. I'm really concerned about if the ISP can see "my location". OK, it has an IP address from another country as my real IP address, but how does my ISP detect the traffic going through them? Can they find out who I am? Won't they say "Hey, there is a traffic but who is and what he is doing right now?", because I get the Internet from them?

  • Networking 2 Virtual PC with one VPC as DHCP server

    - by vivek
My host OS is Win XP Professional. The host has a real network connection via DSL and I created a second network connection using Microsoft Loopback Adapter. Internet connection sharing is enabled. The Microsoft Loopback adapter has a IP address of 192.168.0.1. I have 1 Virtual PC which has Windows Server 2003. I have setup the network connection on this VPC to use Microsoft Loopback Adapter. I setup this VPC to be the Domain Controller , DNS Server and DHCP Server. I set this to a static IP address 192.168.0.2 (on the same subnet as the MS Loopback adapter) I have a second Virtual PC which also has Windows Server 2003. The network connection on this VPC is set to "Local Only". I want this VPC to get its IP address from the 1st VPC on which I setup as a DHCP server. What i want is the 2 VPC should be in a network with one of the VPC acting as the domain controller, DNS Server and DHCP server. The second VPC shoud get its IP address from the 1st VPC. It should be a part of the domain of the 1st VPC. When i tried to make the second VPC get the IP address from the first VPC I am not succeeding. Can somebody post some suggestions on how to go about this ?

  • Could not open IPV6 addr on web browser

    - by vito
I have ipv6 address fe80::21f:a4ff:fe91:2e44%4. This is the address of modem/router. I am unable to open this address in browser to view the web configuration. I am able to telnet to fe80::21f:a4ff:fe91:2e44%4, view the console UI & can do settings. I can also open 192.168.1.1(IPv4 address of modem/router) in browser. I tried [fe80::21f:a4ff:fe91:2e44] in all browsers like IE, Firefox & Chrome. It was not possible.

  • Same netmask or /32 for secondary IP on Linux

    - by derobert
There appear to be (at least) two ways to add a secondary IP address to an interface on Linux. By secondary, I mean that it'll accept traffic to the IP address, and responses to connections made to that IP will use it as a source, but any traffic the box originates (e.g., an outgoing TCP connection) will not use the secondary address. Both ways start with adding the primary address, e.g., ip addr add 172.16.8.10/24 dev lan. Then I can add the secondary address with either a netmask of /24 (matching the primary) or /32. If I add it with a /24, it gets flagged secondary, so will not be used as the source of outgoing packets, but that leaves a risk of the two addresses being added in the wrong order by mistake. If I add it with /32, wrong order can't happen, but it doesn't get flagged as secondary, and I'm not sure what the bad effects of that may be. So, I'm wondering, which approach is least likely to break? (If it matters, the main service on this machine is MySQL, but it also runs NFSv3. I'm adding a second machine as a warm standby, and hope to switch between them by changing which owns the secondary IP.)

  • Why would an iPod Touch and PS3 respond to netdiscover as 0.0.0.0?

    - by Iszi
Only slightly related to this question, because it was discovered in the same scan: Can someone explain how this happened? When running netdiscover on my home network, my iPod Touch (identified by DHCP-reserved IP address and MAC address) responded to both its own IP address on our 10.x.x.x subnet and to 0.0.0.0 also. Why would this have happened? EDIT: After letting netdiscover run awhile longer, it seems one of the PS3s on the network is also answering to 0.0.0.0 - why is this?

  • Microsoft Cluster or Oracle Fail Safe error

    - by osdm
Trying to get Oracle Database 10g to work on Microsoft cluster (using Oracle Fail Safe, not RAC). Everything installed, but when trying to verify group or add database to group I get following error: FS-10220: Network name MSK00-NST01-1 maps to IP address 10.1.11.74 in the cluster resource but maps to IP address 10.1.1.74 on the system MSK00-NST01-1 is cluster name, 10.1.11.74 is first node IP, 10.1.1.74 is second node IP. Oracle documentation says "The cluster and the system must have the same IP address mapping for a network name. Check that either the network name server or the local host file has the same IP address mapping as the cluster." Where is the error - in Oracle configuration or in cluster configuration? What are possible ways to correct it? Thanks a lot for any ideas.

  • LACP : Cisco ASA 5515 & Switch ProCurve 2920

    - by user979276
I've two ASAs 5515 connected in failover Active/Stand by (on Gi0/5) My two ASAs are connected to two Switch ProCurve 2920 to have HA if something happens. So I plug something like that (don't pay attention to the arrows) : So one the ASA, I created a Port-Channel like that : interface GigabitEthernet0/0 nameif outside security-level 0 ip address 192.168.1.3 255.255.255.0 standby 192.168.1.4 ! interface GigabitEthernet0/1 speed 1000 duplex full channel-group 1 mode passive no nameif no security-level no ip address ! interface GigabitEthernet0/2 speed 1000 duplex full channel-group 1 mode passive no nameif no security-level no ip address ! interface Port-channel1.1 vlan 1 nameif inside security-level 100 ip address 192.168.8.1 255.255.255.0 standby 192.168.8.2 ! interface Port-channel1.10 vlan 10 nameif guest security-level 50 ip address 172.16.100.2 255.255.255.224 standby 172.16.100.3 ! interface Port-channel1.16 vlan 16 nameif dmz security-level 50 ip address 192.168.16.1 255.255.255.0 standby 192.168.16.2 On the switch, I created a trunk LACP capable with the port 1 and 2 on each switch, force the speed to 1000 and put the port un full duplex mode. BUT this is not working... I tried many things and I can't make it work. In this configuration, I can't ping anything between my ASA and my Switch (or any object connected). Here what I get on my ASA : Channel group 1 LACP port Admin Oper Port Port Port Flags State Priority Key Key Number State ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gi0/2 SP not-bndl 32768 0x1 0x1 0x3 0xc Gi0/1 FP not-bndl 32768 0x1 0x1 0x2 0x6 And on the Switchs : PORT LACP TRUNK PORT LACP LACP NUMB ENABLED GROUP STATUS PARTNER STATUS ----- ------- ----- ------ ------- ------ 1 Active trk1 Broken Yes Failure 2 Active trk1 Broken Yes Failure If I change the Cisco interface to LACP mode On, I can ping the switch from the ASA but nothing other objects conneted on the switch. If I look at the statut of LACP on the switch I see this : PORT LACP TRUNK PORT LACP LACP NUMB ENABLED GROUP STATUS PARTNER STATUS ----- ------- ----- ------ ------- ------ 1 Active trk1 Up No Success 2 Active trk1 Up No Success I don't have any clue on what's going on so If someone have any idea and help me on this, it would be great ! Feel free to ask me anything if you need any more information ! Thanks a lot !

  • Apache + Bind Problems

    - by Gabriel
Hello, I am using VirtualMin on Debian-50-lenny-64-LAMP (Debian Linux 5.0). I've upgraded some packages including "bind". Since the upgrade, both Apache and Bind stopped working. Here's the errors I get: Blockquote Starting web server: apache2apache2: Could not reliably determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 78.46.92.11 for ServerName (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs failed! and Failed to start BIND : Unknown error I am sure that some files were changed after the upgrade and this is a simple problems to solve, but unfortunately, it's the first time I am in this situation and I just couldn't find a solution. I've Googled about the errors but still couldn't make it work. Now I am sorry I did the update. I usually make updates to have the latest versions of the packages that are installed in the server. Any ideas?

  • Cisco 877 as PPPoA/PPPoE bridge (no routing) - how to make it listen to IP for management?

    - by Ingmar Hupp
I have a Cisco 877 configured to bridge ADSL with PPPoA to PPPoE on Vlan1. This works fine, but in this mode the only way I can configure the Cisco is via the serial console. I'd like to have the Cisco also listen on an IP address so I can telnet/ssh into it. I think the right way to go about this would be via bridge irb, but I'm not sure exactly how (or if that's even the right direction). IOS is 12.4T and my current config (cut down to essentials) is: no ip routing no ip cef ! ! interface ATM0 no ip address no ip route-cache no atm ilmi-keepalive pvc 0/38 encapsulation aal5snap ! dsl operating-mode auto bridge-group 1 ! ! interface Vlan1 no ip address no ip route-cache bridge-group 1 Just setting an IP address on Vlan1 didn't have the desired effect, but surely this must be possible somehow (the Draytek Vigor 120 even does it by default).

  • DNS request times out then succeeds on my local network. Why?

    - by Dan
I have a W2K3 Server that is the Domain Controller and also the DNS server. I wanted to make another DNS zone on my network called "something.local" and then make 'A' records to point requests like 'admin.something.local' and 'www.something.local' to machines on my network. I keep getting DNS timeouts but then after 2 tries it succeeds. Why would this happen? How can I troubleshoot? From my desktop I run: nslookup admin.something.local and get: Server: server.domain.com.au.local Address: 192.168.0.10 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. Name: admin.something.local Address: 192.168.0.191 If I go back the other way: nslookup 192.168.0.191 I get: Server: server.domain.com.au.local Address: 192.168.0.10 Name: admin.something.local Address: 192.168.0.191 My DNS server address is 192.168.0.10. The new DNS zone is not hooked up to active directory. I do not have much experience with DNS. Yesterday it was working fine. I have tried doing an 'ipconfig /flushdns' on both my desktop and the DNS server

  • DNS problems on CentOS fresh install

    - by Rick Koshi
    I'm having some DNS issues on a new box I'm installing with CentOS 6.2. I am able to look up names using nslookup, dig, or host. I am able to ping machines by name or by IP address. However, when I try other tools, such as ssh, wget, or yum, they are unable to resolve names. For example: # wget http://www.google.com --2012-03-08 14:48:06-- http://www.google.com/ Resolving www.google.com... failed: Name or service not known. wget: unable to resolve host address `www.google.com' # ssh www.google.com ssh: Could not resolve hostname www.google.com: Name or service not known # ping -c 1 www.google.com PING www.l.google.com (74.125.113.106) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from vw-in-f106.1e100.net (74.125.113.106): icmp_seq=1 ttl=46 time=43.6 ms --- www.l.google.com ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 59ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 43.665/43.665/43.665/0.000 ms # host www.google.com www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com. www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.99 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.103 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.104 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.105 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.106 www.l.google.com has address 74.125.113.147 My /etc/nsswitch.conf file is the default, including this (standard) line: hosts: files dns /etc/resolv.conf is as set up by DHCP: ; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script nameserver 192.168.1.254 192.168.1.254 is a working DNS server (my DSL modem, working for years with other machines) Anyone know why ping would work, but ssh/wget would fail? Per NcA's suggestion, I tried changing /etc/resolv.conf to point to 8.8.8.8. Oddly enough, this does make it work. Obviously, my DSL modem is responding to DNS requests in some way that some parts of Linux's resolution system don't like. Looking at the tcpdump, I am unable to see what the difference is. Certainly, both servers are sending the same addresses. Here's the output from tcpdump -nn -X with the server set to the DNS server on the DSL modem. It's clearly replying with the correct addresses, but ssh/wget don't seem happy with it for some reason: 15:53:52.133580 IP 192.168.1.254.53 > 192.168.1.2.54836: 33157 7/0/0 CNAME www.l.google.com., A 74.125.115.105, A 74.125.115.106, A 74.125.115.147, A 74.125.115.99, A 74.125.115.103, A 74.125.115.104 (148) 0x0000: 4500 00b0 e33a 0000 ff11 53b1 c0a8 01fe E....:....S..... 0x0010: c0a8 0102 0035 d634 009c 7528 8185 8180 .....5.4..u(.... 0x0020: 0001 0007 0000 0000 0377 7777 0667 6f6f .........www.goo 0x0030: 676c 6503 636f 6d00 0001 0001 c00c 0005 gle.com......... 0x0040: 0001 0007 acd0 0008 0377 7777 016c c010 .........www.l.. 0x0050: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 7369 .,..........J}si 0x0060: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 736a .,..........J}sj 0x0070: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 7393 .,..........J}s. 0x0080: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 7363 .,..........J}sc 0x0090: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 7367 .,..........J}sg 0x00a0: c02c 0001 0001 0000 0001 0004 4a7d 7368 .,..........J}sh 15:53:52.135669 IP 192.168.1.254.53 > 192.168.1.2.54836: 65062- 0/0/0 (32) 0x0000: 4500 003c e33b 0000 ff11 5424 c0a8 01fe E..<.;....T$.... 0x0010: c0a8 0102 0035 d634 0028 98f9 fe26 8000 .....5.4.(...&.. 0x0020: 0001 0000 0000 0000 0377 7777 0667 6f6f .........www.goo 0x0030: 676c 6503 636f 6d00 001c 0001 gle.com..... I had it working in a previous 12.04 kernel, using compat-wireless and these instructions http://zulkhamsyahmh.blogspot.com/2012/05/install-smartfren-haier-ce682-on-ubuntu.html, and to get it working had to edit the routing tables so that there was a ppp0 showing up, as suggested at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/wvdial-is-connecting-but-im-unable-to-do-anything-714861/ Network manager doesn't work with this modem, so I use either wvdial or gpppon to connect to it, both which work (after I run the command sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x201e product=0x1022 ) This is the output of when I connect with gpppon to the modem: Using interface ppp0 Connect: ppp0 <-- /dev/ttyUSB0 sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] rcvd [LCP ConfAck id=0x1 ] rcvd [LCP ConfReq id=0x2 ] sent [LCP ConfAck id=0x2 ] sent [LCP EchoReq id=0x0 magic=0x819c86db] rcvd [CHAP Challenge id=0x1 <1ac8f12799e953967a3cc222c9254690, name = ""] sent [CHAP Response id=0x1 <6f12a903dc40915ca2761c17b87f8fbd, name = "smart"] rcvd [LCP EchoRep id=0x0 magic=0x0] rcvd [CHAP Success id=0x1 ""] CHAP authentication succeeded CHAP authentication succeeded sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] rcvd [IPCP ConfReq id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfAck id=0x1 ] rcvd [CCP ConfReq id=0x1] sent [CCP ConfAck id=0x1] rcvd [CCP ConfRej id=0x1 ] sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x2] rcvd [IPCP ConfRej id=0x1 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x2 ] rcvd [CCP ConfAck id=0x2] rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x2 ] sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x3 ] rcvd [IPCP ConfAck id=0x3 ] not replacing existing default route via 192.168.3.1 local IP address 10.191.248.154 remote IP address 10.17.95.25 primary DNS address 10.17.3.244 secondary DNS address 10.17.3.245 as you can see there is a problem with "not replacing existing default route via 192.168.3.1" This it the out put of route Kernel IP routing table Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface default 192.168.3.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0 link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 1000 0 0 wlan0 192.168.3.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0 I had tried these commands, which had previously worked in the earlier kernel: route del default route add default ppp0 but that broke my wireless internet connection. I then added the default routing as shown above with sudo route add default gw 192.168.3.1 wlan0 So it seems I need to add or change the routing to show a ppp0 connection, but I don't know how to do that.

  • error svn: OPTIONS could not connect to server

    - by benza
I'm trying to checkout a repository with an http address. I tried with different machine but I obtained every time time the same error: svn: OPTIONS of 'http://svn.macports.org/repository/macports/trunk': could not connect to server (http://svn.macports.org) I can't understand the problem, the address is http so I think that is a problem of subversion with http address (the repository is the one for Macport for MAC OS but I think that the problem is not about the repository but is a subversion problem)

  • Large enterprise application - clients wish to use duplicate e-mails addresses?

    - by Alex Key
I'd like to know people's opinions, reactions to clients and technical work arounds (if applicable), to the issue of an enterprise application where a client wishes to use duplicate e-mail addresses? To clarify, when I say duplicate e-mail addresses I mean within the same client system, having multiple users that have the same e-mail address. So not just using generic e-mail addresses but using the e-mail address of another user. e.g. Bob Jenkins: [email protected] James Jeffery: [email protected] Context To give this some further context, in the e-learning sector it is common that although all staff in an organisation must complete e-learning - they may not have their own e-mail address so they choose to use their managers e-mail address. Albeit against good practice in public sites... it's a requirement we've over and over again where an organisation is split between office based staff and perhaps e.g. staff in a warehouse. Where problem lies Mr Steak, good point, the problem lies in password resets and perhaps in situations where semi-personal information could be sent (not confidential enough to worry about the insecurities of email). Perhaps reminders for specific system actions, which would be confusing for the unintended party to see (if perhaps misreading the e-mail's intended recipient) Possible solutions System knowing the difference between a "for the attention of" and direct to the person e-mails, including this in the body text. Using alternative communication such as SMS Simply not having e-mails sent to people who are not the intended recipient. Providing an e-mail service ourselfs (not really viable for a corporate IT dept) Thoughts?

  • Windows 2008 R2 IPsec encryption in tunnel mode, hosts in same subnet

    - by fission
In Windows there appear to be two ways to set up IPsec: The IP Security Policy Management MMC snap-in (part of secpol.msc, introduced in Windows 2000). The Windows Firewall with Advanced Security MMC snap-in (wf.msc, introduced in Windows 2008/Vista). My question concerns #2 – I already figured out what I need to know for #1. (But I want to use the ‘new’ snap-in for its improved encryption capabilities.) I have two Windows Server 2008 R2 computers in the same domain (domain members), on the same subnet: server2 172.16.11.20 server3 172.16.11.30 My goal is to encrypt all communication between these two machines using IPsec in tunnel mode, so that the protocol stack is: IP ESP IP …etc. First, on each computer, I created a Connection Security Rule: Endpoint 1: (local IP address), eg 172.16.11.20 for server2 Endpoint 2: (remote IP address), eg 172.16.11.30 Protocol: Any Authentication: Require inbound and outbound, Computer (Kerberos V5) IPsec tunnel: Exempt IPsec protected connections Local tunnel endpoint: Any Remote tunnel endpoint: (remote IP address), eg 172.16.11.30 At this point, I can ping each machine, and Wireshark shows me the protocol stack; however, nothing is encrypted (which is expected at this point). I know that it's unencrypted because Wireshark can decode it (using the setting Attempt to detect/decode NULL encrypted ESP payloads) and the Monitor Security Associations Quick Mode display shows ESP Encryption: None. Then on each server, I created Inbound and Outbound Rules: Protocol: Any Local IP addresses: (local IP address), eg 172.16.11.20 Remote IP addresses: (remote IP address), eg 172.16.11.30 Action: Allow the connection if it is secure Require the connections to be encrypted The problem: Though I create the Inbound and Outbound Rules on each server to enable encryption, the data is still going over the wire (wrapped in ESP) with NULL encryption. (You can see this in Wireshark.) When the arrives at the receiving end, it's rejected (presumably because it's unencrypted). [And, disabling the Inbound rule on the receiving end causes it to lock up and/or bluescreen – fun!] The Windows Firewall log says, eg: 2014-05-30 22:26:28 DROP ICMP 172.16.11.20 172.16.11.30 - - 60 - - - - 8 0 - RECEIVE I've tried varying a few things: In the Rules, setting the local IP address to Any Toggling the Exempt IPsec protected connections setting Disabling rules (eg disabling one or both sets of Inbound or Outbound rules) Changing the protocol (eg to just TCP) But realistically there aren't that many knobs to turn. Does anyone have any ideas? Has anyone tried to set up tunnel mode between two hosts using Windows Firewall? I've successfully got it set up in transport mode (ie no tunnel) using exactly the same set of rules, so I'm a bit surprised that it didn't Just Work™ with the tunnel added.

  • 12.10 Wireless hotspot configuration and internet browsing - question

    - by Indian
In our campus we have a leased line connection from a service provider, which has an external IP W.X.Y.Z. This connection is distributed from the server several sub-networks / subnets as follows: Faculty: 172.33....../ 255.255.0.0 Administration: 172.34......./255.255.255.0 Students: 172.35...../255.255.216.0 A student has a laptop with a fixed IP address 172.35.23.123 / 255.255.216.0 where the IP address is on the ethernet port. The gateways for internet access are 172.31.1.1 and 172.31.1.2. Further the student has a wireless port which is inaccessible in the hostel area. The OS of the student is Ubuntu 12.10. The student in the possession of an android phone on which he wishes to install specific software and therefore wishes to activate the internet therein. The student has already attempted the Wireless hotspot solution which works for 12.04 but has not been successful. Various instructions on the internet have helped the student to do the following Installation of dhcp server and hostapd: sudo apt-get install isc-dhcp-server sudo apt-get install hostapd File: /etc/network/interfaces auto lo iface lo inet loopback auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet static address 10.10.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 dns-nameservers 172.31.1.1 172.31.1.2 File: /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf subnet 10.10.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 10.10.0.2 10.10.0.4; option routers 10.10.0.1; option domain-name-servers 172.31.1.1 172.31.1.2; default-lease-time 6000; max-lease-time 72000; } File: /etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf interface=wlan0 driver=nl80211 ssid=my_hotspot channel=1 hw_mode=g auth_algs=1 wpa=3 wpa_passphrase=1234567890 wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK wpa_pairwise=TKIP CCMP rsn_pairwise=CCMP File: /etc/default/hostapd RUN_DAEMON=”yes” DAEMON_CONF=”/etc/hostapd/hostapd.conf” DAEMON_OPTS=”-dd” File: /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server INTERFACES=”wlan0” File: /etc/rc.local iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.10.0.0/16 -o eth0 -j MASQUERADE exit 0 After all the configuration, the computer is restarted. The student can see that the hotspot named “my_hotspot” is available. The hotspot also awards an address to the android phone. The student will now be able to browse the internet.

  • I've just set up FreeBSD 8.0 and can't login with ssh

    - by Matt
/etc/hosts.allow is set to allow any protocol from anywhere. I can "ssh localhost" and it works. I simply get "connection refused" from putty on another machine. Any ideas? Will try to get a copy of the sshd_server.conf file as soon as I can find a flash disk to copy it to, but I thought someone might know what you need to set initially to permit login. EDIT: I think I can see why it's not working now. If I telnet to the IP address of the server I'm seeing MGE UPS SYSTEMS SNMP Web/Agent configuration menu. Enter Password: Doh. Ok, so the IP address is assigned by DHCP, but it seems there is already a device statically assigned to that address. I'll put in a reservation and try again. ok, sorted now. It was an ip address conflict. Windows DHCP isn't smart enough to check if there is something listening on the address before first assigning it.

  • How to check use of userva boot option on Win 2K3 server

    - by Tim Sylvester
I have some 32-bit Win2K3 servers running an application that fails now and then apparently due to heap fragmentation. (Process virtual bytes grows, private bytes does not) I do not have access to the source code or build process of this application. I have modified the boot.ini file on one of these servers to include /userva=2560, half way between the normal mode of operation and the /3GB option. Normally it takes weeks to reach the point of failure, but I'd like to see right away whether this has actually had any effect. As I understand it, this option limits the kernel to the remaining address space (1536MB instead of 2048), but does not necessarily give an application the extra address space, depending on the flags in the application's PE header. How can I determine whether the O/S is allowing a particular application, running in production, to access address space above 2GB? Additionally, what's the best way to monitor the system to ensure that the kernel is not starved for address space, and more generally how should I go about finding the optimal value for this setting?

  • Why is nslookup reporting two IP addresses?

    - by Jeff
I made a DNS change a few hours ago and I just ran the following command with the following output: nslookup mydomain.com ns1.mynameserver.com Server: ns1.mynameserver.com Address: 111.111.111.111 Name: mydomain.com Addresses: 222.222.222.222 333.333.333.333 222.222.222.222 is old IP. 333.333.333.333 is the new IP address. Why are they both showing up? Since I'm querying the authoritative DNS server directly, shouldn't only the new IP address be shown?

  • Router vs switch in a LAN [closed]

    - by servernewbie
If I have a LAN and and connect it with a switch, I understand it uses a CAM table to route packets in layer 2 (by saving mac to port relations). So far all good. However, when using a router for a LAN (ONLY for a LAN, not to connect it to "the outside" WAN/internet/etc) I get a bit confused as to how it internally processes packets. I would first split this into two router scenarios: Router with buit-in switch In this scenario, I would expect that it will act exactly as a switch with a CAM table internally. This would probably benefit a bit in speed (guessing here?) compared to the next option. Router without built-in switch Here is where I get confused. If hostA wants to send a packet to hostB, it will ARP to find hostB's MAC address and send it there. Now, if we had a switch (above scenario) this would be easy. But how does it work now in a router WITHOUT a switch? If I would guess, hostA would send an Ethernet frame with hostB's MAC address to the line. The router would fetch the packet (even though the router has another MAC address, it would still fetch this packet even if it only contains hostB's MAC address). It would strip the Ethernet frame header and check the IP, and then check its own internal ARP table again for the MAC address. Now, this would seem like a waste of resources compared to a router with a built-in switch. But maybe it does not work like that at all. Does it also contain a CAM table? If that would be true, what would then the difference between these two routers really be?

  • DNS subdomain problem - Hover.com

    - by Ryan Sullivan
I use hover.com to manage my domain names. I have having a huge problem with setting a sub-domain to a specific IP address: I want the sub-domain on a particular domain name that I have. I set an A type record for that sub-domain and pointed it towards the IP address; it is not working at all. The thing that is confusing me is that when I set the IP address to a sub-domain on a different domain name it works just fine. Also, I have since deleted the DNS record from the domain that it happened to work on, and when I type that address into a browser it still resolves to the IP I had it set to. I am not sure what is going on at all. If this seems confusing I am sorry, but I am very confused about the whole thing myself. If any clarification is needed, just ask and I will try to clear things up.

  • Divide a network into two subnets of equal size

    - by kylex
I have been given the following IP 192.168.14.137/25 and asked to divide the network into 2. This is what I've come up with: The subnet mask is therefore 255.255.255.128 The network address is 192.168.14.128 There are a total of 128 available addresses (including the network address and broadcast address) To divide the network we create to subnets: 192.168.14.128/26 192.168.14.192/26 This will have a subnet mask of 255.255.255.192 Am I missing anything, or is this correct?
