    I wasn't able to run X11 or Terminal after rebooting my Mac. After digging around, I got them to work when I commented-out this line in my .cshrc: xset b off It appears that xset will attempt to launch X11 if it isn't running already, and since X11 will launch the default shell through xterm and thus encounter the xset line above, we will have an infinite loop. I would like to keep the above line in my .cshrc. Is there a way to prevent X11 from launching itself?

  • How can I tell which page is creating a high-CPU-load httpd process?

    I have a LAMP server (CentOS-based MediaTemple (DV) Extreme with 2GB RAM) running a customized Wordpress+bbPress combination . At about 30k pageviews per day the server is starting to groan. It stumbled earlier today for about 5 minutes when there was an influx of traffic. Even under normal conditions I can see that the virtual server is sometimes at 90%+ CPU load. Using Top I can often see 5-7 httpd processes that are each using 15-30% (and sometimes even 50%) CPU. Before we do a big optimization pass (our use of MySQL is probably the culprit) I would love to find the pages that are the main offenders and deal with them first. Is there a way that I can find out which specific requests were responsible for the most CPU-hungry httpd processes? I have found a lot of info on optimization in general, but nothing on this specific question. Secondly, I know there are a million variables, but if you have any insight on whether we should be at the boundaries of performance with a single dedicated virtual server with a site of this size, then I would love to hear your opinion. Should we be thinking about moving to a more powerful server, or should we be focused on optimization on the current server?

    I'm creating UDEV rules for automounting external drives on a headless server, much in the same way as Gnome-VFS does automounting during a user session. I'm concerned with the rule's behavior at boot-time. There's a good chance one of these drives will be connected during a boot, and I'd prefer any connected drives get mounted in the right place. The drives might be either USB or Firewire, and they are mounted from a shell script fired off by UDEV on detecting an "add". Here are my questions: When UDEV runs the mount for these devices at boot, will the system be ready to mount it? Or will the script get triggered too early? If it's too early, what's a good way for a script to tell that the system isn't ready yet (so sleep a while before checking again)? The UDEV rule matches ACTION=="add". Does this event even fire at system boot?

What should I substitute for XYZ in ubuntu-bug XYZ ?

    I am performing some interactive testing using HP's QuickTest Professional and Linux. I am connecting via SSH and feeding the BASH script lines directly into the command line. The problem I'm having is that the script executes as it is entered. I'm attempting to find a way that I can feed the script to the command line, but save execution until the entire script is complete. Anyone have any experience around doing this? I'll admit, it isn't the ideal way to perform this, but it's what I'm faced with at the moment. Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Just-In-Time debugging this exception failed with the following error: Debugger could not be started because no user is logged on. We're getting the above error in the Application log.     Model: QNAP TS-410 Turbo NAS Firmware version: 3.2.5 Build 0409T Issue: Each day, users connect to share folders on the NAS system and have read/write permissions for the share folders to which they need access. However, it often asks them for their log-in details and - when provided with right (or wrong) credentials for a user with read/write permissions - it denies them access.     I have an addin for Excel 2003. I tried to use MSDN's vbs script to make it installed, see my previous post question. It seems working as addin, but it does not displayed on toolbar when it is first installed on a box. What I have to do is to go to Tools-Add-Ins.. to uncheck my addin, for example myAddin, and then go back to the same dialog window again to check it. I think there must be somewhere Excel has config settings in xml or registry? Any way to run a script to set this addin visible in toolbar?

  • On Windows 2008 R2, how do I back up DHCP if the DHCP .mdb database is always busy?

    I get this from my backup software. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\dhcp.mdb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\j50tmp.log : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. C:\WINDOWS\system32\dhcp\tmp.edb : The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. My questions: Should I be doing a manual backup of DHCP via command line tools or maybe with MMC, Action, Backup before I run my backup? Is the %SystemRoot%\System32\DHCP\Backup directory always kept up to date? (which does get backed up by backup software) I'm answering my own question but the registry key is set up for 3c, 60 minutes, I believe. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DHCPServer\Parameters\BackupInterva This is not the included backup software for Windows. It is another product, but I have seen this with every backup software I've ever used.

Background load is low prio (SCHED_IDLEPRIO, idle ionice), but uses a lot of memory (more than is physically available) and does a lot of IO and calculations. Latencytop shows about 1500ms for: Following symlink Writing buffer to disk (sync) Page fault Writing a page to disk both for the bg load and for unrelated processes. Load average is 10 and counting. Why cannot it allocate, for example, 200MHZ of one of the cores and 32M of memory and not less than once per second opportunity for IO for mplayer to make it happy while continuing calculations on the background? Or: why it cannot leave background task and swap loving each other but keeping the rest of the system as if there were no background load? How to have RT processes AND heavy bg load simultaneously (without of virtual machines)?

Is running a program (What_ever_job.EXE file) in ssh as : "./What_ever_job &" enough to keep it running if my own computer is shut down and ssh is closed?     I've seen this error message in other posts. They didn't seem to help resolving our issue. We are trying this with two SQL Server 2008 servers. I backed up my database from the source server and then restored it on our destination server. We setup basic Transaction Replication. The Snapshot Agent is working fine. The Log Reader Agent fails with the error above. Is it most likely a login issue for this job or QueryTimeout?

    From what I know of most laptops, you are able to "partition" your disk into as many other drives as you please. The more you cut it up, the smaller your partitions are, but from an organizational point of view, this may be desirable... I was wondering how the filesystem itself becomes partitioned underneath the partitions visible to the user. For instance, a laptop disk is usually divided into platters, each with two surfaces. The surfaces are further divided into "tracks". I guess what I am asking is, is it possible to identify how the disk itself keeps track of partitions? (whether each partition has its own platter? each partition has its own set of adjacent tracks? or some other configuration, or whether the data from different partitions are just randomly interleaved and scattered throughout the disk?)
