• Should programmers itemize testing in testing? [on hold]

  I recently hired a programming team to do a port of my iPad app to the iPhone and Android platforms. Now, in a separate contract, I am asking them to implement a bunch of tips on how to play the app, similar like you would find in Candy Crush or Cut the Rope. They want to charge 12 hours @ $35/hr for the "Testing all of the Tips", telling me that normally it would take them more than 25 hours but that they will 'bear the difference'. I am not familiar with this level of itemization, but maybe it's a new practice? I am used to devs doing their own quality control, and then having a testing/acceptance period. They are using Cocos 2D-X, and they say that the tips going to multiple platforms makes all of the hours jack up. I feel like they might be overcharging, and it's difficult for me to know because it's kind of like with a mechanic. "It took us 5 hours to replace the radiator". How can you dispute that? It seems to me that most of you would charge for the work but NOT for hours that you are 'testing'. Am I missing something? Thanks for any help and advice you can give!

• MySql #2002 problem

  when i try to login in apache i get #2002 error. when i try to login via terminal it ask my password mysql -u root and i get ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) i tried to remove mysql and install it again and nothing happen ( i cant even remove it) i try to reboot apache but still nothing. i tried to reboot my pc and of course still aint working. in terminal i put sudo start mysql i got this: start: Job failed to start mysql -ubob -hlocalhost -P3306 -p got me this ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) sudo service mysql stop gave me this stop: Unknown instance: my.cnf * Basic Settings # user = mysql pid-file = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.pid socket = /var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock port = 3306 basedir = /usr datadir = /var/lib/mysql tmpdir = /tmp lc-messages-dir = /usr/share/mysql skip-external-locking # i tried to find if there is a file in my /var/run/mysqld/ or in /var/tmp/ and dint find the file mysqld.sock .. i looked in /var/log/mysql/ and dont even have anything in it can help me???i try to find help on google for hours and dint help at all... -------EDIT---------- salem : sudo service mysql start i get start: Job failed to start cat /var/log/syslog | grep mysql here http://paste.ubuntu.com/1335984/ /var/run/mysqld/ this folder exist but it dosent have anything in it /var/run/mysqld/ i get total 0 drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 40 Nov 5 22:31 . drwxr-xr-x 25 root root 860 Nov 5 22:32 .. sorry that i post anything my terminal gives but i am noob at this. hope this information will do.

• Is an ACPI GPE storm normal in an Ubuntu session?

  In a previous question (What is a an ACPI GPE storm?), I asked about ACPI GPE storm. Looking closer to my kern.log file in /var/log/, I notice that in every session at some point (usually withing 20' after startup) a GPE storm is triggered. When I open kern.log immediately after startup, I see that the 'GPE-storm' can be triggered by anything (a copy-action, the opening of an app like Firefox or Thunderbird, etc...). This worries me. Looking for other ACPI related events in kern.log, I find these error messages. • Some problems after running ubuntu tweak application

  I am a first time user of ubuntu 12.04 and must say that i am enjoying it. Somehow my skype on ubuntu is screwed up. The message that i am getting says (Disk IO error). Did any one face the problem before. Also i downloaded the ubuntu tweak application. After that application has clean some file, the application it self is not starting now.. I am quiet new to linux much and fear that if the tweak application has cleaned some files which were necessary.   I'm trying to parse a .x file using SlimDX. I can create the XFile object and register templates but I'm having problems with the enumeration object. The enumeration object has a child count of 0 for a file I know to have valid data. • "cannot open file system. File system seems damaged "

  I was using windows 7 till yesterday. I tried to install ubuntu 14. 04 Lts version yesterday with in windows 7. But it was not succeeded. Then I decided to install ubuntu only. By mistake I installed ubuntu in whole disk. After that to get deleted partitions I installed testdisk. I also used deeper search option. Now I'm getting "file system damaged". It shows The hard disk (320GB /298 GiB) seems to small! (<473 GB /441 GB) Check the Harddisk size: HD Jumpers setings, BIOS detection... The following partitions can't be recovered: Partition start end size in sectrors Linux 19077 177 45 57604 81 13 618930716 Linux 19080 192 57 57607 96 25 618930716 With ubcd also I used testdisk option. Same result comes."cannot open file system. File system seems damaged ". I have all my stuff in hard disk. Please help me to get recover my files in deleted partitions.

• Strict Pomodoro and other time management Chrome extensions

  I have recently begun using the Pomodoro Technique to increase my productivity. However, I still find myself getting sucked in to the vortex of useless information that is the internet. With that in mind I began searching for a useful chrome extension to replace the Android Pomodoro app I have been using to manage my ‘doros. I even considered writing it myself. Luckily, I stumbled on one that had a similar featureset to what I was looking for. Strict Pomodoro is an excellent Chrome extension for practicing Pomodoro. Though lacking a few key features, such as the ability to set the duration of your pomodoros and breaks, it still has a key feature that helps me stay on task. It blocks time sucking websites. You can set filter lists and it will keep you from accessing them during a Pomodoro. Effectively reminding you to stay on task. Also, the author readily admits that it was quickly put together and new features may be added down the road. For now, it is still an excellent option. For those of you who do not practice Pomodoro but are trying to stay on task. The StayFocusd extension will effectively manage the amount of time you spend on useless (non-productive) sites. It also has a rich feature set that may be better for your work habits. OK, breaks over. Time to get back to work. 25 minutes at a time.

Twitter lists are really cool feature that they recently added, I love them and I’ve quite a few lists setup one for DOTNET gurus, SQL Server gurus and one for a few celebrities. You can follow them here. Now let us move onto our tutorial. 1) Lists can be subscribed to in two ways, one can be user’s own lists, which he has created and another one is the lists that the user is following. Like for example, I’ve created 3 lists myself and I am following 1 other lists created by another user. Both of them cannot be fetched in the same api call, its a two step process. 2) In the TwitterCredentialsSubmit method we’ve in Home.xaml.cs, let us do the first api call to get the lists that the user has created. • Bad at math, feeling limited

  Currently I'm a java developer, making websites. I'm really bad at math, in high school I got suspened because of it once. I didn't program then and had no interest in math. I started programming after high school and started feeling that my poor math skills are limiting me. I feel like the programming's not that hard for me. Though web development in general is not that hard, i guess. I've been doing Spring and Hibernate a lot. What i'm trying to ask is : if I understand and can manage these technologies and programming overall, would it mean that I have some higher than average prerequisite for math and details? Would there be any point or would it be easy for me to take some courses in high school math and get a BSc in math maybe? This web development is really starting to feel like not my cup of tea anymore, i would like to do something more interesting. I'm 25 now and feel like stuck. Any help appreciated.

• Firefox on wine crashes on startup on Ubuntu

  First, let's explain why I want Firefox under wine, and not the Firefox that is shipped out of the box with Ubuntu. I want to use Firefox under wine because I want to use the Widevine addon, which is "at this time not available for linux". Here is what I did so far to install and use Firefox on wine. On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, I just installed wine like that: sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install wine Then I downloaded the windows installer for Firefox from the mozilla website. • How can I run this script on startup, restart, and shutdown?

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.10. I've written a script, that synchronises a directory in ~ with a directory on /dev/sda4, using Unison. Before, I had this script running every five minutes with no problems, using crontab. Right now, I want to execute this script at startup, restart and shutdown only. This is what the script looks like: #!/bin/bash unison -perms 0 -batch "/mnt/Data/Syncfolder/" "/home/myname/Syncfolder/" My crontab configuration was as follows: m h dom mon dow command 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * sh /usr/local/bin/s4lj.bash Note that I copied the script from ~ to /usr/local/bin/ first, to avoid root problems. I've read How to execute script on shutdown? and How to write an init script that will execute an existing start script?. After doing that, I've done this: I've made s4lj.bash executable, and then copied it to /etc/init.d/. For startup, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc2.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to S70s4lj.bash. For restart, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc6.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. For shutdown, I've made a symlink in /etc/rc0.d/ to /etc/init.d/s4lj.bash, and renamed it to K70s4lj.bash. Still, the script won't be run in any of these situations. How can I make the script get executed? I'd be happiest with a proper *.conf file in /etc/init. Thanks in advance.

  Linux has a lot of eye-candy because of Compiz, my favorite of which is the window opacity plugin. Using a short AutoHotKey script, you can add that same functionality to Windows 7. I used this AHK script as a basis for changing opacity. It uses a single hotkey to change the active window’s transparency by 25% each time until it resets to 0. I wanted functionality similar to Compiz, so I modified the script to use the mouse wheel and shortened the increments to get more variety. Just hold down the Windows key and scroll down to see through the window. This decreases opacity and makes windows more transparent. • Stuck at enemy movement

  I am making a TD game in unity, Initially I made all of my enemy movements frame rate dependent say: I had a grid point1 at -22.65 and other at -21.1, diagrammatically: (-22.65) _________(-21.1)_______(-21.1+1.55) ...... so the distance on x axis between two points is 1.55, divided it by 25 jumps with each enemy jump of 0.062 of each frame. On reaching on next point of grid the enemy find again its path. All went fine until I have requirement of FastForward and Pause feature. I used timeScale property of unity but it wont work as they are frame dependent. I also tried double speed of enemy on clicking fast forward button at any time, it has some issues that enemy jumps are now less and it fails to reach on next grid point. Could someone suggest me solution to my problem. Do I need to change the enemy movement code to make it frame independent ?? I need the enemy to reach on the grid specific point I also need later to slow down any one enemy's speed when tower fires on it. Thnx

• DIY Homemade Hybrid Rocket Engine [Video]

  Remember the guy with the cool DIY astronaut ice cream build? He’s back with a mini hybrid rocket engine that runs off oxygen and acrylic. I built a small rocket engine for demonstration purposes. The engine is built from a 2″ diameter acrylic rod through which I drilled a 0.5″ hole. The oxygen at 80 psi or less is passed through the hole and then is forced through a convergent-divergent nozzle at the tail end. The nozzle’s throat is about 0.25″ and expands to 0.625″. I lit the engine by inserting a burning cotton swab (with wooden stick) while a small amount of oxygen was flowing. The acrylic catches fire very easily in a pure oxygen environment. The engine can be throttled and shut off completely, which is a major benefit to hybrid engine designs. Solid-fuel rockets cannot be throttled or shut off, which makes them difficult to control.
