  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”.   I just upload beta 1 to codeplex. Please test this version and give me feedback. Some quick notes on setup Watch the intro screencast on the codeplex site. Use the setup tool to set the signing and SSL certificate. You can now also set the ACLs on the private key for your worker pool account. IIS is required . SSL for the IIS site the STS runs in is required. Users of the STS must be in the 'IdentityServerUsers' role. Admins of the STS must be in the 'IdentityServerAdministrators' roles. What’s new? Mainly smaller bits and pieces and some refactoring. The biggest under the cover change is a new authorization model for the STS itself. If, e.g. you don’t like the new roles I introduced, you can easily change the behavior in the claims authorization manager in the STS web site project. What’s missing? The big one is Azure support. Not that I ran into unforeseeable problems here, I just wanted to wait until the on-premise version is more stabilized. Now with B1 I can start adding Azure support back.

If you are not new to SharePoint Server 2007 and you have some development experiences then this is the easiest exam from Microsoft you have ever seen. There are 51 questions in this exam and two or four of them were not familiar to me. I took me about one hour to prepare for this exam and I got 964 of 1000. Okay, I have some years of experience as SharePoint developer but these questions seemed still too easy for me to be real. I mean based on this exam you cannot accurately say if somebody is able to configure SharePoint Server or not. I think this exam should be very easy also to SharePoint Server administrators who have at least some experience with supporting and maintaining production systems running on SharePoint Server 2007. Those who does not feel strong on SharePoint Server configuring my read a book suggested by Microsoft Learning site: Inside Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007. • Microsoft MVP Award &ndash; Data Platform Development

  For those who don't already know, yesterday I received my first Microsoft MVP Award in Data Platform Development.  With less than 5,000 MVPs in the world overall and about 20 in the Data Platform category, saying I am honored would be an understatement.  From the first time I spoke at a code camp, I was totally hooked and have had a blast travelling around the east coast speaking at code camps and users groups.  I'd like to take the time to thank Dani Diaz (@danidiaz) for the nomination and everyone who supported me, especially my wife Lisa for letting me travel and speak as much as I have and putting up with me for late nights and such.  Roska Digital, my employer, also deserves a shout out for supporting me and giving me the necessary time off to get to speaking engagements.  With any luck, the next year will be at least as fun if not more than the last one has.  I hope to see you at a code camp or user group meeting soon! • #mvvmlight V4 update for Win8 RTM

  With Windows 8 RTM out of the doors (at least for some of us), it was also time to create an update to MVVM Light. I selected the V4 RTM to do this (V4.0.23).This RTM version was released a few weeks ago with no much bells and whistles because I was just too busy to write much about it. Now after some vacation, I will resume blogging on all my favorite topics including of course MVVM Light. Upgrade Upgrading the installations should not require an ununistall, so try to simply run the MSI downloaded from the Download section at http://mvvmlight.codeplex.com/. Should you encounter any issue, try to uninstall the old version first following the steps at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/cleaning/. Upgrading current apps from Win8 RP to Win8 RTM I didn’t recompile the assemblies of MVVM Light, so if you had a version running with V4.0.23 on Windows 8 RP, you should be able to use the same DLLs on Windows 8 RTM. If you were using earlier versions however, I would recommend doing an upgrade. I noticed a warning regarding the signing certificate. It is due to the PFX key which appears to be outdated after the upgrade to Windows 8 RTM. I solved this warning by replacing the old PFX key with a new one I copied from a new project. The warning did not cause the build to fail though. About MVVM Light V4 RTM The RTM is finalizing quite a lot of issues. The change log is available at http://galasoft.ch/mvvm/installing/changes/. There are some issues that are either still open or that popped up since then, and I am working on V4.1 to be released in the next few weeks. • Executive Edge: It's the end of work as we know it

  If you are at Oracle Open World, it has been an exciting couple of days from Larry's keynote to the events at the Executive Edge. The CSO Summit was included as a program within the Executive Edge this year. The day started with a great presentation from Joel Brenner, author of "America The Vulnerable", as he discussed the impact of state sponsored espionage on businesses. The opportunity for every business is to turn security into a business advantage. As we enter an in-hospitable security climate, every business has to adapt to the security climate change.  Amit Jasuja's presentation focused on how customers can secure the new digital experience. As every sector of the economy transforms to adapt to changing global economic pressures, every business has to adapt. For IT organizations, the biggest transformation will involve cloud, mobile and social. Organizations that can get security right in the "new work order" will have an advantage. It is truly the end of work as we know it.  The "new work order" means working anytime and anywhere. The office is anywhere we want it to be because work is not a place it is an activity.   If you are active in forums or comment areas on different websites then you most likely use some type of special characters, HTML, or other code throughout the day. Now you can easily insert commonly used “items” with the SKeys extension for Firefox. Your New Special Text Edit Bar After installing the extension you will see the new toolbar that has been added to your browser. These are the kinds of text that can be added to online comment areas, forums, or other website areas that allow their use: Special characters HTML tags BB codes Wiki characters All that you will need to do is click on the appropriate special character or code to insert it into the website text area. The first two toolbar items are each singular in their function and insert the following types of text. A look at the special characters available for your use. The wiki code menu. The HTML menu… And the BB code menu. Here is a quick sample using the HTML menu…much better than doing it manually. This should definitely help speed things up throughout the day. Our only disappointment during testing was not being able to add additional items (i.e. characters, tags) to the toolbar at this time. Conclusion While a new toolbar may not be for everyone this extension can certainly prove useful when you need to quickly add special characters or coding in website text areas. • Almost at our first year anniversary!

  It has been a hectic first year at Vizioz and things are still going from strength to strength. 11 months ago I started Vizioz with zero capital investment in the middle of a recession, which to some may seem a daunting prospect but to others including myself it was the challenge I needed to make me want to get up in the morning :) I wanted to prove that even in the curent financial climate it is still possible to start a new business.We are still experiencing the normal growing pains of a small business but this is something we just need to work our way through, it is amazing how much paperwork and administration there is running a small business, office admin, insurance, vat and for the last few months PAYE.For the last 9 months we have shared an office with another small business called Little Big Ideas. They are a design agency working across a broad spectrum of design from branding, print and digital. Last month we decided to move offices to a larger office and now have room for 8 of us, so now we need a couple more clients to help produce enough work to fill the space and grow to the next level.As well as moving office 2 months ago I blogged about my first employee Colin starting work for me, he has picked up Umbraco very well and has mastered the art of good CSS design, as the majority of our clients are large multi-nationals they still require support for IE6 which as all web developers know is the nightmare of all web browsers.This month has seen the next step in the growth of Vizioz as I have taken on another PhD graduate called Pricilla, welcome to the team!This month we plan to launch our own website to enable us to showcase some of the sites we have built over the past 11 months and to allow potential clients to see what we can offer. We might still be relatively small but we have some great case studies to show and with two PhD graduates on the team we have great talent capable of producing complex and innovative solutions for our clients. • Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

  Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. You should take a few moments to look through the various tabs and tweak the settings for items like location, screen resolution, timing, auto-start, etc. When you are done click on Execute and within a few moments your desktop will have a fresh new look!
