  I have setup a virtual machine in Virtual Box and installed a Samba Server. I changed the guest operating system's NIC from Bridged to NAT for a reason that I can't remember. I then added a additional NIC in "host only adapter" mode. The Windows host OS now can access the Ubuntu 10.10 virtual server via the Host Only NIC. However, I can not access the Samba server running on the Ubuntu guest OS. I am not sure what to do now. How can I get the widows Host OS to access the Guest OS' samba server.

  I have been programming in python and java for quite a number of years and one thing i find myself doing is using the setters and getters from java in python but a number of blogs seem to think using the dot notation for access is the pythonic way. What I would like to know is if using dot to access methods does not violate abstraction principle. If for example I implement an attribute as a single object and use dot notation to access, if I wanted to change the code later so that the attribute is represented by a list of objects, that would require quite some heavy lifting which violates abstraction principle.

• File access forbidden in htpasswd

  I have been using the htpasswd generated in this question and it seemed to have been working well until recently. Since yesterday, I am not able to access the newest file created in the folder ChatLogs(named 10_07_2012.txt). The server returns a 403 Forbidden error saying: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /ChatLogs/2012/07/10_07_2012.txt on this server. I am still able to access older files(until 09 July, 2012). At first I thought it might be because of file permissions, but they are the same as on other 9 files in the folder. What could be the problem? Please Help.

  I have been trying to no avail, to share folders on my ubuntu pc with a windows network. The windows network isn't a homegroup, just a straight up access to folders made public. I can see the ubuntu shares I make, but when I try to access them I get a permission denied contact your system administrator type message. Could someone clarify the area re adding a user to samba, as there are about 30 different unix usernames! I just want my windows network to have unrestricted access to my linux folders. Any help would be greatly appreciated

• MS Excel and Access - which is better for reports?

  Where I work, staff have just started to use a basic table in excel (1 october) to record sales which has about 10 columns (name, client, renewed, discount, paid etc). I record the data (total sold etc) every hour and email it to the manager. Each staff has the their own file on the network which they use constantly for that day (eg. John 08-10.xlsx; John 09-10.xlsx etc) and have been told to save the file after they complete a row with client data. I can see the file (in read only mode) to update the report but I am sure there must be a way of doing an autoupdate of their worksheets in real time. I can link worksheets and workbooks to my main workbook but manually. Does anyone have suggestions on have to do this on Excel? Or would Access allow me to make a report which shows the sales total for that hour without the staff closing the file or constantly clicking save every few minutes? We use office 2010. thanks

  I have a table containing data of sold products (shown in the example on the left): Columns: Number of the order Product Name Attribute - specifies what is given in the following field "value", e. g. Customer Name or Product Variant Value - is the value of the Attribute Count - is the number of products of this variant sold in the order That means: Product B has 2 variants "c" and "d" Note that in Order 1 Product B was sold in Variant d only, because the letter "N" in field "D4" means "none". Note, that in OrdnerNo 3 Product B was sold only in Variant c, because for Variant d field "D9" is "N"!! This is confusing, but it is the structure of the original data (which I can not change). I need a way to convert the table on the left in a table like that on the right: one line for each product type Order Number Product Name Customer Name Count (number of products sold in this order) Variant - this is the problem, as it has to be filled with the So all rows with the same OrderNo and same product have to be grouped in to one, and I hope it is clear what I need. I tried to do it with Pivot Tables, but that fails, as the Count is always in each line, no matter if it has Value "N" or not and for the products without variants there is only one line for each order, however for products with variants there are several... So how could I create the right table with a VBA macro in MS Excel or maybe there is a trick in MS Access to do it directly or with an SQL query?

• Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

  Maybe I am missing something but all I want to do is be able to access and transfer files from one folder on my main computer to my htpc. Both computers are running Ubuntu 14.04. I followed the instructions on this video but I am not sure if I need to do something on the HTPC to access my Movie folder. I went into nautilus then Browse Network Windows Network Workgroup but I get an error and it won't let me access it. Is there something I am doing wrong?

  I am thinking of subscribing to Dropbox which is slightly more costly than Ubuntu one but I need access to my files on the go, and I prefer to use my smartphone to my netbook most of the time as I like to travel light. I do not want to stream music, I want access to my files only. Whereas there is a free app for Dropbox to access said files, there isn't one for Ubuntu. I would be prepared to wait a while if you have got this in hand, have you actually given this any thought? Please tell me whether I should ignore Ubuntu One and link up with Dropbox?

• Token replacement

  Hey, I currently have a system on my website whereby I can put something like "[cfe]" anywhere in the site and, when the page is rendered, it will replace it with the root to the customer front end (same for "[afe]" and admin front end - so in the admin front end I can put "[cfe]/Default.aspx" to link to the homepage on the customer front end. This is in place as I have a development version of the site, then a test and a live version too. All 3 may have different roots to each section (for example the way the website is set up, the root to the admin front end in test is "/test/Administration/", but in live and development it is just "/Administration/"). Which version it is depends on the URL - all my development sites are in a folder called "development", whereas test is in a folder called "test" and any live urls do not contain either of these. There are also 3 different databases - one for each. All 3, obviously, require a different connection string. I also have a string replacement function in place which can change, for example, "[Product:Cards]" to point to the Cards catalogue page. Problem is that for this I go through all the products and do a replacement on "[Product:" & Product.Name() & "]". However I would like to take this further. I would like to pick up these custom strings when the page is rendered so it picks up "[Product:Cards]" and then goes off to find product "Cards" and replaces the string with a link to the Cards page, rather than looping through all the products and doing a replace just on the off chance that there are any replacements to make. One use for this, which I may start using in the future if I can figure out how to do this, is like on Wikipedia where you put the title of the page you want to point to, then a divider (think its a pipe from memory) then the link text. I would like to apply this to the above situation. This way broken links can also be picked up, and reported to admin (a major advantage as they can then locate them and remove the link or add the product / page that it refers to). I would like to take this to the stage where content of entire pages can be rearranged (kinda like web parts, but not as advanced as that). I mean like so you can put [layout type="3columnImageTopRight" image="imageurl"]Content here[/layout]. This will display, as specified, an image in the top right (with padding at the left and bottom) and 3 columns - maybe with the image spanning one or two columns). The imageurl can be specified as another token: maybe like [Image:imagename.gif] or something. This replaces it with the root to the image folder and then the specified filename. I have not really looked into how I am going to split the content into 3 columns yet, but this would be something to look at for my dissertation and then implement after my project deadline at least. Does anyone have any ideas or pointers which could help me with this? Also if this is not strictly token replacement then please point me to what it is, so I can further develop this. • Taking a Projects Development to the Next Level

  I have been looking for some advice for a while on how to handle a project I am working on, but to no avail. I am pretty much on my fourth iteration of improving an "application" I am working on; the first two times were in Excel, the third Time in Access, and now in Visual Studio. The field is manufacturing. The basic idea is I am taking read-only data from a massive Sybase server, filtering it and creating much smaller tables in Access daily (using delete and append Queries) and then doing a bunch of stuff. More specifically, I use a series of queries to either combine data from multiple tables or group data in specific ways (aggregate functions), and then I place this data into a table (so I can sort and manipulate data using DAO.recordset and run multiple custom algorithms). This process is then repeated multiple times throughout the database until a set of relevant tables are created. Many times I will create a field in a query with a value such as 1.1 so that when I append it to a table I can store information in the field from the algorithms. So as the process continues the number of fields for the tables change. The overall application consists of 4 "back-end" databases linked together on a shared drive, with various output (either front-end access applications or Excel). So my question is is this how many data driven applications that solve problems essentially work? Each backend database is updated with fresh data daily and updating each takes around 10 seconds (for three) and 2 minutes(for 1). Project Objectives. I want/am moving to SQL Server soon. Front End will be a Web Application (I know basic web-development and like the administration flexibility) and visual-studio will be IDE with c#/.NET. Should these algorithms be run "inside the database," or using a series of C# functions on each server request. I know you're not supposed to store data in a database unless it is an actual data point, and in Access I have many columns that just hold calculations from algorithms in vba. The truth is, I have seen multiple professional Access applications, and have never seen one that has the complexity or does even close to what mine does (for better or worse). But I know some professional software applications are 1000 times better then mine. So Please Please Please give me a suggestion of some sort. I have been completely on my own and need some guidance on how to approach this project the right way.

  I have a traits class that's used for printing out different character types: template <typename T> class traits { public: static std::basic_ostream<T>& tout; }; template<> std::ostream& traits<char>::tout = std::cout; template<> std::wostream& traits<unsigned short>::tout = std::wcout; gcc (g++) version 3.4.5 (yes somewhat old) is throwing an error: "expected constructor destructor or type conversion before '&' token" And I'm wondering if there's a good way to resolve this. (it's also angry about _O_WTEXT so if anyone's got some insight into that, I'd also appreciate it)

  I am trying to implement FTP over SSL to upload encrypted files. I've created a SSL certificate and send it to the vendor. But I couldn't make a FTPS connection to the server. When connecting via FTPS, I'm authenticating using my private key file. I have tried .NET FTPWebRequest, SmartFTp,CuteFTP Pro. I am getting the following error:- A call to SSPI failed. See inner exception. All the samples I see are either using a json-embedded link or they use the photos.upload call with album ID (aid) which results in the user getting the image in his photo album(s). What I want to do is to upload an (UI)Image created (by the user) inside an iPhone app and upload to his/her wall. Is this possible? Sample code would be highly appreciated.

• Unexpected Access Denied error while accessing EFS encrypted file

  I am getting Access Denied error when I try to access some files. ACL is OK, all ACE's all intherited, I have full access to these files and I am the owner of these files. ACE's are exactly same as other files in the same directory which are accessible without problems (doublechecked through Security Tab on file properties and cacls command). Files are EFS encrypted, however I should have access to these files, because they were encrypted by the same user account I am trying to access (decrypt) them. EFS settings are exactly same as other files in the same directory which are also encrypted and accessible without problems (doublechecked through cipher command and efsdump command (SysInternals)). In ProcMon utility (SysInternals) I am getting Access Denied entry while accessing these files. Files are not used (locked), checked by Unlocker utility. Up to now, I tought I understand NTFS ACL's and EFS mechanisms fairly well, but now I am completely stuck and I do not know how to access these files. Any thoughts?
