Could somebody be able to explain to me what the various unix_listners do in the Dovecot 2.x configuration (specifically 10-master.conf). Currently, for postfix to use to deliver mail, I have: service lmtp { unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/dovecot-lmtp { group = postfix mode = 0660 user = postfix } } and for auth I have: service auth { unix_listener /var/spool/postfix/private/auth { mode = 0666 } unix_listener auth-userdb { mode = 0666 user = vmail } } So what does each one specifically do? Also, does somebody know of a resource that can explain the mode setting?

IE9, HTML5 and truck load of other stuff happening around the web

First of all, I haven’t been updating this blog as regularly as it used to be. Primarily, due to the fact was I was visiting a lot of cities talking about SharePoint, Web Matrix, IE9 and few other stuff. IE9 is my new found love and I simply think we have done great work in improving the browser and browsing experiences for our users. This post would talk about IE, general things happening around the web and few misconceptions around IE (I had earlier written about IE8 and common myths When you think about the way web has transformed, its truly amazing. Rewind back to late 90s and early 2000s, web was a luxury. There were lot of desktop applications running around and web applications was starting to pick up. Primarily reason was not a lot of folks were into web development and the areas of web were confined to HTML and JavaScript. CSS was around here and there but no one took it so seriously. XML, XSLT was fast picking up and contributed to decent web development techniques. So as a web developer all we had to worry about was, building good looking websites which worked well with IE6 and occasionally with Safari. Firefox was not even in the picture then and so was Chrome. But with the various arms of W3C consortium and other bodies working actively on stuff like CSS, SVG and XHTML, few more areas came into picture when it comes to browsers supporting standards. IE6 for sure wasn’t up to the speed and the main issue we were tackling then was privacy and piracy. We did invest a lot of our efforts to curb piracy and one of the steps into it was that, IE7 the next version of IE would install only on genuine windows machines. What this means, is that, people who were running pirated windows xp knowingly/unknowingly could not install IE7 and the limitations of IE6 really hurt them. One more thing of importance is that, if you were running pirated windows, lots of chances that you didn’t get the security updates and thereby were vulnerable to run viruses/trojans on your system. Many of them actually block using IE in the first place and make it difficult to browse. SP2 came as a big boon but again was there only for genuine windows machines. With Firefox coming as a free install and also heavily pushed by Google then, it was natural that people would try an alternative. By then, we had started working on IE8 supporting the best standards (note HTML5, CSS 2.1 and other specs were then work in progress. they are still) Later, Google in their infinite wisdom realized that with Firefox they were going nowhere and they released Chrome. Now, they heavily push Chrome even for Firefox users, which is natural since its their browser. In the meanwhile, these browsers push their updates as mandatory and therefore have a very short lifecycle to add enhancements and support for stuff like CSS etc., Meanwhile, when IE8 came out, it really was the best standards supported browser and a lot of people saw our efforts in improving our browser. HTML5 is the buzz word in the industry and there is a lot of noise being made by many browsers claiming their support for it. IE8 doesn’t have much support for HTML5. But, with IE9 Beta, we have great support for many of HTML5 specifications. Note that, HTML5 is still work under progress and one of the board of members working on the spec has mentioned that these specs might change and relying on them heavily is dangerous. But, some of the advances such as video tag, etc., are indeed supported in IE9 Beta. IE9 Beta also has full hardware acceleration support which other browsers don’t have. IE8 had advanced security features such as smartscreen filter, in-private browsing, anti-phishing and a lot of other stuff. IE9 builds on top of these with the best in town security standards as well as support for HTML5, CSS3, Hardware acceleration, SVG and many other advancements in browser. Visual Studio 2008 maintenance mode - I can't remember my installation source drive letter!!!

I've searched high and low for this and can't find the answer anywhere. I installed VS2008, but my drive letters are all mapped differently now, and of course I need to add a component to my current installation (VC++). But since I don't know which drive letter it was installed from, and since I don't want to try to figure it out the brute force way, I was hoping that someone here knew how to figure that out. I poked through HKCU and HKLM in the registry, hoping to find the info there, but couldn't. Does anyone know how to get this to work? Right now, I get the error "A selected drive is no longer valid. Please review your installation path settings before continuing with setup".

Sensor Manager getOrientation, doesnt display text and only works in debug mode?

Hi Guys, My code appears to crash. I'm trying to setup a SensorManager for getting the Orientation of the device. I also have a listener that should update when conditions change. Any way to disable horizontal scroll for FlowLayoutPanel in AutoScroll mode?

I need a System.Windows.Forms.FlowLayoutPanel that only auto scrolls vertically. WrapContents is false, and I want it to work like a vertical stack panel. I can't find a way to disable the horizontal scroll. I've googled it, can't find a usable solution so far. The alternative is to abandon the FlowLayoutPanel, and try another control. What acts somewhat like a WPF stack panel but that expands and shrinks vertically with the contained controls?

Error displaying a WinForm in Design mode with a custom control on it.

I have a UserControl that is part of a Class library. I reference this project from my solution. This adds a control from the referenced project to my toolbox. I add tghe control to a form. Everything looks good, I compile all and run. Perfect... But when I close the .frm with the control on it and re-open it, I get this error. The code continues to run. It may have something to do with namespaces. The original namespace was simply "Design" and this was ambiguous and conflicting so i decided to rename it. I think that's when my problems began. Can a View Controller manage more than 1 nib based view?

I have a VC controlling a screen of content that has 2 modes; a normal mode and an edit mode. Can I create a single VC with 2 views, each from separate nibs? In many situations on the iphone, you have a VC which controls an associated view. Then on a button press or other event, a new VC is loaded and its view becomes the top level view etc. But in this situation, I have 2 modes that I want to use the same VC for, because they are closely related. So I want a VC which can swap in/out 2 views. As per here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/863321/iphone-how-to-load-a-view-using-a-nib-file-created-with-interface-builder/2683153#2683153 I have found that I can load a VC with an associated view from a nib and then later on load a different view from another nib and make that new view the active view. When the new nib is loaded, the outlets are all connected up fine and everything works nicely. Unfortunately when this edit view is then removed, there doesn't seem to be any elegant way of getting the outlets hooked up again to the (normal mode) view from the original nib. Nib loading and outlet setting seems a once only thing. So, if you want to have a VC that swaps in/out 2 views without creating a new VC, what are the options? 1) You can do everything in code, but I want to use nibs because it makes creating the UI simpler. 2) You have 1 nib for your VC and just hide/show elements using the hidden property of UIView and its subclasses. 3) You load a new nib as described above. This is fine for the new nib, but how do you sort the outlets when you go back to the original nib. 4) Give up and accept having a 1:1 between VCs and nibs. There is a nib for normal mode, a nib for edit mode and each mode has a VC that subclasses a common superclass. In the end, I went with 4) and it works, but requires a fair amount of extra work, because I have a model class that I instantiate in normal mode and then have to pass to the edit mode VC because both modes need access to the model. I'm also using NSTimer and have to start and stop the timer in each mode. It is because of all this shared functionality that I wanted a single VC with 2 nibs in the first place.

Hello, I have switched to using emacs-ess for my R code development and it is working great. I would like to be able to write some small R code I am using for debugging my R script into the scratch buffer, and be able to execute the scratch buffer code in the R process buffer. I've found how I could change the scratch buffer's mode to text by putting the following in the .emacs file: (setq initial-major-mode 'text-mode) Is there a similar statement I can put in my .emacs file that would make the scratch buffer have the ess-mode? I tried the following which results in an error about wrong type argument: (setq initial-major-mode 'ess-mode)

Can I use the auto-generated Linq-to-SQL entity classes in 'disconnected' mode?

Suppose I have an automatically-generated Employee class based on the Employees table in my database. Now suppose that I want to pass employee data to a ShowAges method that will print out name & age for a list of employees. I'll retrieve the data for a given set of employees via a linq query, which will return me a set of Employee instances. I can then pass the Employee instances to the ShowAges method, which can access the Name & Age fields to get the data it needs. However, because my Employees table has relationships with various other tables in my database, my Employee class also has a Department field, a Manager field, etc. that provide access to related records in those other tables. If the ShowAges method were to invoke any of those methods, this would cause lots more data to be fetched from the database, on-demand. I want to be sure that the ShowAges method only uses the data I have already fetched for it, but I really don't want to have to go to the trouble of defining a new class which replicates the Employee class but has fewer methods. (In my real-world scenario, the class would have to be considerably more complex than the Employee class described here; it would have several 'joined' classes that do need to be populated, and others that don't). Is there a way to 'switch off' or 'disconnect' the Employees instances so that an attempt to access any property or related object that's not already populated will raise an exception? If not, then I assume that since this must be a common requirement, there might be an already-established pattern for doing this sort of thing?

In VisualStudio 2008, emacs mode - how can you enable "overwrite"?

Using VisualStudio 2008, have emacs keyboard mapping scheme enabled. If I select text and try to paste over it, it INSERTS the new text, rather than replacing it. Also, if I select text and hit DELETE it deletes the first character AFTER the selected text (just as if I didn't have any text selected). Does anyone know how to fix this so that I get the standard windows behavior. That is: If I select text and try to paste over it, it replaces the selected text with what I pasted in. If I select text and hit the DELETE key, it actually deletes the text I have selected Thanks! Abby

iPhone SDK: How to detect a row-hit while in the editing mode?

I've looked everywhere and I can't find it. I have a UITableView that contain rows of "checkmark" cells. The user clicks on a row to check/uncheck it. (It works!!!!) But I also want to allow the user to EDIT the data on that row. ... so I have an "EDIT" button at the top. The user hits it and is allowed to DELETE any rows. (That works too!!!!) But how do I also detect a "tap" on that row. Where is there some kind of a didSelectRowAtIndexPathWhileInEditMode ???? (Is that really the best way to do this: Allow "selections", and "deletions", and "editing" of each row?)

I am very new to WPF and testing some things that I would like to include in an application that I will be working on. I have a 2 row ListView (bound to a textbox) with the names Scott Guthrie and Jon Skeet in it. I am trying to select "Scott Guthrie" in the ListView and have it populate the TextBox. I want to be able to edit the text and tab off and have the ListView updated. Edit:I removed the code since that really didn't add anything to the question.
