• Predictive vs Least Connection Load Balancing Techniques

  I have a windows based desktop application that communicates via TCP to the application servers. (windows 2003). No sticky sessions between client calls. We have exactly 2 servers to load balance and we are thinking to use a F5 hardware NLB. The application is a heavy load types, doing not much bussiness logic in the services but retrieving quite a big amount of data at most of the times. May be on an average 5000 to 10000 records at all times. Used mainly for storing and retirieving data and no special processing of data or calculations running on the server side. I am favouring 'predictive' considering my services take a while at times to return data and hence tracking the feedback would yield some better routing as in predictive. I am not sure if the given data is sufficient enough to suggest some ideas but considering these, what would be some suggestions\things to consider\best between Predictive and Least Connections ? • Linux command to concatenate audio files and output them to ogg

  What command-line tools do I need in order to concatenate several audio files and output them as one ogg (and/or mp3)? If you can provide the complete command to concatenate and output to ogg, that would be awesome. Edit: Input files (in my case, currently) are in wma format, but ideally it should be flexible enough to support a wide range of popular formats. Edit2: Just to clarify, I don't want to merge all wmas in a certain directory, I just want to concatenate 2 or 3 files into one. Thanks for the proposed solutions, but they all seem to require creating temporary files, if possible at all, I'd like to avoid that.

  What software or system do you guys out on server fault use to remind you to do routine maintenance? How do you checklist and log the various items you are supposed to check? Do you have an internal process document? Do you have cron mail you every week with reminders to check system logs? Also, do you work on a team to do system maintenance, and if so, how do you coordinate who will do what maintenance? If you use a bug/issue tracking system to enter tasks, do you have a cron job enter recurring tasks?

  Is there any way how to use multiple SkyDrive accounts on one computer running MAC OS X or Windows 8? I would like to sync data from different accounts to different folder and not to merge these accounts to one. The reason is that every SkyDrive has it's storage limits and I'm using every account for different work data. The result should be the following: I have a number of SkyDrive accounts every for different work, let's say: S1 S2 S3 I would like to sync exactly the same number of folders on computer using different accounts to sync them: SkyDriveS1Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S1 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS2Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S2 SkyDrive) SkyDriveS3Folder - (folder on computer which syncing the content of S3 SkyDrive) Is it possible somehow? • Ignoring GET parameters in Varnish VCL

  Okay: I've got a site set up which has some APIs we expose to developers, which are in the format /api/item.xml?type_ids=34,35,37&region_ids=1000002,1000003&key=SOMERANDOMALPHANUM In this URI, type_ids is always set, region_ids and key are optional. The important thing to note is that the key variable does not affect the content of the response. It is used for internal tracking of requests so we can identify people who make slow or otherwise unwanted requests. In Varnish, we have a VCL like this: if (req.http.host ~ "the-site-in-question.com") { if (req.url ~ "^/api/.+\.xml") { unset req.http.cookie; } } We just strip cookies out and let the backend do the rest as far as times are concerned (this is a hackaround since Rails/authlogic sends session cookies with API responses). At present though, any distinct developers are basically hitting different caches since &key=SOMEALPHANUM is considered as part of the Varnish hash for storage. This is obviously not a great solution and I'm trying to work out how to tell Varnish to ignore that part of the URI.

• On boot firmware request for intel GMA 3100 chipset timing out

  I am currently in the process of installing a Gentoo linux box with a Vanilla 2.6.29-r5 kernel with gentoo-xen-kernel patches in order to run the Xen Hypervisor. After rebooting with the new kernel, the booting process seemed to hang on: [ 0.863005] platform microcode: firmware: requesting intel-ucode/06-0f-07 [ 60.863442] Microcode Update Driver: v2.00-xen <[email protected]>, Peter Oruba Apparently the firmware request times out after 60 seconds (/sys/class/firmware/timeout) and booting just continues. I have done some research and have found that on RHEL-4 this problem was related to the mount of /sys changed and the firmware.agent hotplug script couldn't parse the line correctly. However I am having some difficulty tracking down how to fix this on Gentoo. Any and all ideas are greatly appreciated! Thanks

• Internal users can't receive email sent by application

  We have an application server that hosts a CRM application. It is using SMTP on it's own server to send emails. If I send an email using the application to [email protected], it shows up in my inbox. If I send an email to [email protected], it never shows up. It doesn't matter what address I put in for @MyCompanyDomain.com, they never get through. Any email addresses outside our domain/firewall get through. We're using Exchange 2007 and when I look at the message tracking logs, the missing messages don't show up there, either. Is there something I need to configure in Exchange or the SMTP server on the application server? I can't figure out why emails get outside the firewall but internal emails never show up. • Automatically keeping two excel data tables in-sync (w/out VBA)

  I'm putting together a workbook for tracking a stock portfolio. The primary sheet contains a table with the list of the transactions. From this I would like to create an overview table on another sheet with only one row per unique stock symbol that includes things like cost basis, returns, etc. The problem is that nothing I've tried updates the overview table correctly when rows are added to the transaction table. And even then the range of the table isn't extended down to include new rows as they become valid. Essentially I'm looking for a way that auto-adds rows to a table and copies the formula based on a different table changing without using VBA. • Does Juniper Networks provide keyloggers with their software?

  I noticed that I had a "USB Mass Storage Device" plugged in when there wasn't in fact anything plugged in to any USB port. I turned it off via Windows (XP), but it's quite concerning. This was after installing Juniper Networks' software for VPN access to an IT guy's stuff. I also notice there is a service called "dsNcService.exe" which apparently is sending information over the internet (even when I'm not in VPN access). The process restarts itself when I end it. Should I be worried that this software is tracking my keystrokes and broadcasting them to my IT guy?

• baffling stat pauses - (reiserfs)

  I've got a SuSE server with reiserfs formatted partitions, all on a RAID1 mirror. I'm noticing odd spikes in iowait, but generally all seems okay. iostat claims not even 3% iowait in general: avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 6.53 0.03 1.45 2.92 0.00 89.07 After tracking down some odd behaviour when ls'ing, it appears "stat" (ls is aliased to include color which does a stat process on each file) randomly takes 5 seconds on a file in the directory. ReiserFS does a file system sync every 5 seconds, but that's interval between not length of time taken to sync. Out of curiosity I did remount using noatime to see if that would help though as it would reduce sync's workload, but no joy. Anyone got any thoughts what might be causing this pause? Disks appear healthy, RAID controller believes the RAID is healthy, and io stats show the disks aren't working very hard at all.

• Virus sending phishing emails through exchange server

  It appears that there is a virus on my network somewhere that is sending phishing emails through my exchange server. I can see the messages in message tracking and I see many SMTP errors for NDR's and rejected connections from external servers, but I do not see any SMTP authentications and I have logging up to MAX. How can I find the IP or hostname of the PC that is infected? Or is there some other explanation than virus? Anti-virus scan on server is clean. Server is not an open relay. Thanks

• Good option for a transparent internet gateway on Mac OS X

  Hi I have a small network of Mac systems, and would like to add some internal monitoring of our internet usage, which has recently begun to climb. I would like to configure one of the machines as an internet gateway, and install some monitoring software that could provide graph indications of network usage by machine. The machine would then double as a workstation and as the internet gateway. I can manually configure the machines on the network to use it as a gateway, and would prefer to avoid an explicit http proxy (although it is an option if necessary). What software would serverfault users recommend to provide simple, easily configurable and maintainable network monitoring on Mac OS 10.5.7 (non-server)? The simplest requirement is monitor usage by IP Address, but additional tracking (e.g. destination, protocol, etc) would be useful.

  I'm a 19 year old computer geek who was recently exposed to Linux. I know quite a bit of it now and would like to do something substantial with it. I've visited websites like openhatch where you can get started on opensource projects but I'm more interested in something Linux-specific like hosting a website or tracking some important operation. Maybe running a script that will give me data on something important. I don't know. I'm essentially bored and I want to put my knowledge and love of Linux to good use. • VPN - What is the complexity involved setting one up across less than a dozen machines?

  Hello, I have never set up and configured a VPN. I was wondering what it takes to set one up across windows server 2008 servers. What is the complexity involved? How complicated is it to configure? Do I need to set up a Domain controller as a pre-requisite? I am asking because it appears SQL Server 2008 merge replication can only be set up over the internet using VPN and I am trying to gauge what I am up against. Thanks a lot.

After playing with microsoft's change data capture methods, Im looking into some other solutions. We are planing to distribute our product as a hosted solution and unlimited installations would be desired for maximum scalability. Ive looked at IBM's Guardium as well as DB Audit by SoftTree. Im curious if anyone has any solutions they may have used in the past or possibly any suggestions or methods to achieve complete, and of course cost effective, auditing of data changes.

  I'm not an Apache expert but need to make a small change to a web server. We are introducing a "jump page" URL that is different from a primary URL (for tracking reasons). /productA/index.html /productA/jump_index.html Basically i want to log that jump_index.html was requested and then return index.html. I don't want the client to wait 8 seconds or so for a redirect. How should we be handling this? Simply symlink (or alias) the file in the filesystem? Use mod_alias Alias Match (if so how exactly)? something better still?

• Merging multiple versions of same excel spreadsheet

  So here's the situation: I have multiple versions of the same spreadsheet-- each one has the exact same row and column labels. The difference between any two given spreadsheets is that data in one spreadsheet shouldn't be in the other (but sometimes it might.) Is there anyway to merge all of them into a "master copy" (or just a blank version) of the spreadsheet? (basically, using the data from various versions of that worksheet to fill out the main one) Copy-pasting is extremely tedious, and doesn't allow me to copy blocks of rows IF the row numbering is non-contiguous. (For example, Rows 1, 2, 3, 6 are in a block, but row 4 and 5 just don't exist.) Ideas? Googling hasn't turned up anything that seemed directly relevant to this problem.

• Windows Disk I/O Analysis

  It appears that we are having a problem with the disk i/o speed on our Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition server (64-bit). As we were initializing a database that created two 1G tablespaces on 3 different machines, it became obvious that the two smaller machines (each 32-bit Windows 2003 Standard Edition with less RAM) killed the larger machine when creating the files. The larger machine took 10x as long to create the tablespaces than did the other machines. Now, I am left wondering how that could be. What programs or scripts would you guys recommend for tracking down the I/O problem? I think the issue may be with the controller card (all boxes are hardware RAID 10, but have different controller cards), but I would like to check the actual disk I/O speed as well, so I have some hard numbers to work with. Any help would be appreciated.

• How to use BT or emule across 2 or more hard drives?

  One difficulty with BT or emule is that, when the hard drive is full, we constantly need to move older files to a new hard drive so that we can download newer files. We can change BT or emule's setting so that the folder for downloading points to the new hard drive, but then, what if emule haven't finished downloading for some files that are hard to find, and it is 92% done... in that case, we would like to keep the old setting so that when the last 8% arrives, it can go into the correct file. (and same for BT, if we haven't finished some file or if we want to seed something later). So is there a good way to let BT or emule point to 2 hard drives, or somehow let the new hard drive "merge" into the existing hard drive / folder?

• Are there videocamera which geotag individual frames?

  I'm looking for a way to record live video with the specific requirement of having each frame georeferenced with GPS. Right now I'm using a normal video camera with a PDA+GPS that records the position, but it's difficult to sync both of these plus sometimes I've forgotten to turn the PDA+GPS or it has failed for some reason and all my video has been useless. Using google I found that about two years ago a company named Seero produced such video cameras and software, but apparently the domain doesn't exist any more and I only find references of other pages mentioning it. Does somebody know of any other product? I need to record this video in HD and have some way to export to Google Maps or other GIS software the positions of the frames in a way that I can click on the map and see what was being recorded in the video at that point. The precission of the GPS tracking is good enough as one position per second, intermediate frames of the video stream can be interpolated.

• How can I move my partition in GParted?

  The following is a screenshot of GParted run on my system. There is a small unallocated space at the beginning of the list. This 1 MiB space is kind of annoying and I'd like to merge with any other partition except /dev/sda1, /dev/sda6 and /dev/sda4. When I right click on the unallocated partition, the only available operation is "New". And, if I click on "New", I get the following error message. It is not possible to create more than 4 primary partitions Any ideas of how to go about merging the small unallocated space with other partitions?

• I'm receiving an SSL error in various browsers, but I can't find non-SSL content

  I'm receiving an error with my SSL connection. Using google chrome I see the following error: Your connection is encrypted with 128-bit encryption ... however this page includes other resources which are not secure I've scoured the source code, scripts and rendered code in the browser but cannot find where an http:// call is made. I've also used Fiddler2 to examine the traffic and everything is coming across via HTTPS. Has anyone run into this issue before and if so how did you go about finding the culprit. The website is running ASP.NET MVC3 in C#. The page in question is a simple payment page. The only external call is the google analytics tracking code. The page appears to load correctly, all images and scripts are in place.
