• Windows server 2008 rejecting packets from client

  We deployed a server application in .NET 4.0 that is going to run on Windows Server 2008 R2. Strangely, the clients cannot connect to the server given an external IP and the server port. I've ran wireshark diagnostics on the server computer and verified that the packets are arriving to the NIC without any issue so it seems Windows Server 2008 is the culprit here. I've tried to temporarily disable the firewall and add the server port into inbound/outbound rule but it still doesn't solve the issue. How can I solve this issue?

• Classic ASP on large memory server

  I have a client with a large ASP app that apparently is fairly memory intensive. I’m helping them migrate to new hardware they have running Win2k8 R2. They have 4 physical servers with 32gb of RAM each. I’m making the assumption that ASP apps run as a x32 process. So I see that we have two options: On the application pool enable web gardens. Use the physical servers as VM hosts and split the box into say 4 web servers each. Any thoughts on which path will provide us better performance? I’m just not really sure how ASP will handle a machine with lots of memory, and I’m worried it won’t really be able to address the memory well. (you can ignore all the obvious stuff like increased maintenance of 16 web servers vs 4, or the flexibility virtualization gets us over physical servers, etc)

• Windows 2012 Server Hyper-V: Cannot see LAN

  I have one NIC on the machine loaded XP on the Hyper-V and had chosen the network as virtual switch. No LAN and no internet shows up on the client. Am I missing something? it used to work in 2008-R2. Details: One network card on machine (Qualcomm Atheros AR8131 PIC-E Gigabit Ethernet controller) The virtual machine hard disk is pointing to and existing XP-SP2 hard disk created using VPC 2007 The Virtual machine Network Adapter is setup as Virtual Switch to the real ethernet controller with Enable virtual LAN identification set to 2 (no other virtual machine is created in the system) After the virtual machine boots LAN shows empty in Control Panel Network Connections (this is XP client) and I also cannot access the internet. • Is it possible to create a read-only user account for security auditing purposes?

  An organization requires several administrators to have a role of a security auditor. They must have read-only (via network/remote) access to Windows Server 2008 / R2 systems and have permissions to view the server configuration. They must not be able to make any other changes to the server or the network, like restarting or making any configuration chanages. However I can't find any built-in settings for a user like this. The closest thing is the "Users" user group [1], however from my understanding every user in the domain is in this group and cannot view the domain server's configuration.   I am using Windows 2008 R2 Server having a CENTRAL SHARED FOLDER (CENTRALSTORAGE). We are trying to give Domain Users in the Network access as like User1-\CentralStorage\IT\User1 and User2-\CentralStorage\IT\User2. But it is not working when i try to login to that user in Windows XP system which is already a registered computer of domain. Will someone help me in guiding how to declare permissions like \CentralStorage\IT - this is a Main Directory and should be accessed to VIEW folder sub-directories but not to DELETE/RENAME this folder. \CentralStorage\IT\User1 - Full Control to the User1 to ADD SUB-FOLDERS AND FILES. But not to delete/rename this folder name. I gave access using Special Permissions but it is showing as Access Denied when i logon and try to access. Kindly provide me a solution for the same.

• Good reasons to keep 32-bit Microsoft Windows desktop OSes

  Server software has been 64-bit only for a while now (Since Server 2008 R2 for Windows, even earlier for Exchange and Sharepoint) and even Ubuntu are pushing you away from 32-bit versions for their server OSes. But is there any good, quantifiable reason to keep a 32-bit desktop operating system maintained? We're preparing our Windows 8 images for the (unfortunate?) few that will be early adopters. The majority of our desktop computers have 4gb or less of RAM, but I would love to not have to bother supporting a 32-bit flavoured operating system any more. Any reason why I should?

  I'm having a hard time configuring Reporting services on one of our servers. I'm not uninitiated in the domain of IIS7 but I cannot get rid of the login prompt when I'm surfing to the Reporting services website. What I did: I made a windows and SQL user with the same name: Then I choose Anonymous authentication in II7 and filled in the credentials of the specific R.S. user http://img32.imageshack.us/i/iis7auth.jpg/ I choose 'Local Service' as the service account in the R.S. configuration mgr http://img88.imageshack.us/i/rsconfigmgr.jpg/ The first problem is that there's always a pop-up when surfing to the website The second is that when I'm able to log in I get the message that the user doesn't have the appropriate permissions. I want to synchornize all the 3 server together, were datacenter server should be central server and rest 2 servers should synch with the datacenter server. • How can I get Transaction Logs to auto-truncate after Backup

  Setup: Sql Server 2008 R2, databases set up with Full recovery mode. I have set up a maintenance plan that backs up the transaction logs for a number of databases on the server. It is set to create backup files in sub-directories for each database, verify backup integrity is turned on, and backup compression is used. The job is set to run once every 2 hours during business hours (8am-6pm). I have tested the job and it runs fine, creates the log backup files as it should. However, from what I have read, once the transaction log is backed up, it should be ok to truncate the transaction log. I do not see any option for doing this in the Sql Server Maintenance Plan designer. How can I set this up?

What settings do I look at (if any) to know whether it was encrypted? If it wasn't encrypted, what's the easiest way to encrypt it? Was the password I typed at the command line encrypted? Update: sysadmin1138 has addressed the password question. Does anyone know how I can tell if the traffic itself is being encrypted?

• Recover from a corrupted couchbase install

  We have a couchbase installation on a Windows 2008 R2 server that got corrupted (this was from before my tenure, now I want to clean it up). There is no add-remove entry in the Programs and Features list. There is no active service in services.msc. However, something still thinks Couchbase is installed. Shy of wiping the box (we aren't quite to "redeploy test environment servers at the push of a button" altho I'm working on it), how can I ensure that all remnants of couchbase installs prior are now gone? I believe the previous install was in the Couchbase 2.x range, but it may have been 1.7+ Running the installer again gives "Installer needs to update registry value in order to upgrade from the previous version. Please run installer again to continue."

• Web Deploy to IIS7 fails with 401 (Unauthorized)

  we have IIS7 running on Windows Web Server 2008 R2 and it's set up to support Web Deploy. It worked fine when we used the default Administrator account. We recently disabled this account (for security reasons) and are now trying to deploy using another account which is member of the Administrators group, but the deploy fails with 401 (Unauthorized). More specifically, it says: Connected to '<IP>' using Web Deployment Agent Service, but could not authorize. Make sure you are an admin on '<IP>'. The remote server returned an error: (401) Unauthorized. Anybody has any ideas why this is happening? Thanks. Trex

• Which version of Windows Server 2008?

  One of the projects I'm working on is looking like we're going to need to migrate from CentOS 5.4 over to something else (we need to run Postgresql 8.3+, and CentOS/RHEL only support 8.1), and one of the options will be Windows Server. Since 2008 R2 is out that's what I'm looking at. I'll need to run Postgres and Tomcat and don't really require anything that Windows has like IIS (if I can run Server Core, even better!). The other kicker is it will be virtualized through VMWare ESXI 4.0 so that we have three separate boxes: development, Quality, and Production servers. From a licensing standpoint though, and I good enough with just the Web Server edition? Am I right in assuming that will be three licenses? Or should I just jump up to Enterprise so that I get 4 VM licenses?

  I've read some information on TechNet about upgrading SCVMM 2008 - 2012 but can't quite figure out the best way to approach this. The current setup is that we've got SCVMM 2008 R2 installed but against best practice it was actually installed on the Hyper-V host machine since its a small scale deployment its just a single server setup with SCVMM existing on the same host rather than be in a VM. So from what I've read an in-place should be possible which will incur a restart but also don't have the luxury of another server to shift the VMs onto whilst doing this or want to risk anything happening to the Hyper-V role. Ideally I would probably prefer just to get SCVMM 2012 into a VM of its own and remove the 2008 version from the host machine. Anyone done an upgrade on this or have any recommendations about how to approach this?

  I need to configure IIS 7.5 (Server 2008 R2) to be FIPS 140.2 compliant. Specifically, this involves disabling all SSL protocols other than TLS 1.0. I have set the following registry keys: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 2.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\SSL 3.0\Server HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\PCT 1.0\Server to Enabled(DWORD) = 0 as per this KB, but SSL Labs' checker says "SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support" is enabled. (Everything other than that and TLS 1.0 is not available, so we're getting somewhere). It also says "FIPS ready - no" - presumably because SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support is still enabled. serversniff.net says SSL 2.0 is turned off, and doesn't say anything about SSL 2.0+ Upgrade Support. Could this be an anomaly with SSL Labs' checker?

  I've tried installing Exchange 2010 on Windows 2k8 R2. Following error occurred when installing Hub Transport Role. Hub Transport Role Failed Error: The following error was generated when "$error.Clear(); install-ExsetdataAtom -AtomName SharedMachineSettings -DomainController $RoleDomainController" was run: "An error occurred with error code '2147950640' and message 'There is no such object on the server.'.". An error occurred with error code '2147950640' and message 'There is no such object on the server.' I have tried installation with both IPV6 turned on and off. Both failed and both required me to do some magic to uninstall Exchange, and try installation again. Feel free to shoot your ideas what can be done to resolve the error. In the end I will install HyperV and put Exchange 2010 on different server but that's not what the server owner wanted.

  I am trying to install a web service (written in FoxPro) onto a newly configured server. Part of the installation process was to install MSSoap 3.0 which seems to be successful. The server OS is Microsoft Server 2008 R2 (x64). I am now trying to create a virtual directoty at the command prompt using the SOAPVDIR.CMD script and I am getting the following error: CMD> SOAPVDIR.CMD CREATE CSLRosterService "C:\ROSTERWS" CMD> ERROR (0x80070002): Soap Toolkit 3 Isapi is not correctly registered. Does anyone know how I can correct this or what I am doing wrong?

  Hello, I have an win 2008 R2 machine (a home machine of mine) that I am messing around with and learning the server technologies. I also wanted to try out oracle, and was wondering if its possible to setup a LINUX machine with Oracle, and have the two interoperate. What I mean by that is if I setup the server and my laptop on a domain, would it be possible to communicate to that LINUX machine and thus the Oracle database, and if so, are there any good resources on the setup?   Will changing the computer name on which SQL Server 2008 is installed on affect SQL Server in anyway? Or will changing the computer name be transparent to SQL Server? For example: I plan to install Windows 2008 Server and naming it "BobStage". Next I will install SQL Server 2008 R2 and restore a few DB's. Finally I plan to rename the windows machine to "BobLive". Will me renaming the computer's name affect SQL Server's instance ID/name and possibly break something?

• Windows 2008 DHCP service fails - "...failed to see a directory server for authorization."

  I have a small environment running Windows 2008 R2 where the DHCP service on the domain controller fails every two weeks. The most-visible error is Event ID 1059 and the Event Viewer message is: "The DHCP service failed to see a directory server for authorization." The setup features two domain controller and the usual services and roles (file, print, Exchange). Restarting the service fails for a variety of reasons. I've had the following messages at different times: "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation". "Unable to determine the DHCP Server version for the Server 192.168.x.x" "The DHCP service has detected that it is running on a DC and has no credentials configured for use with Dynamic DNS registrations initiated by the DHCP service." A reboot of the domain controller resolves the issue for ~2 weeks. The systems are virtualized and there are no network connectivity issues. Any ideas what's happening here?

• "A device attached to the system is not functioning" when reconnecting to XenApp 6 session

  A few of our XenApp 6 customers are seeing issue sometimes when users move from one workstation to another and try to connect to their running session. An error box pops up with "A device attached to the system is not functioning" This is on healthy 2008 R2 servers with all Citrix hotfixes applied. After the error, the user's session must be logged out before they can get back in. This was posted here: http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=273457 , but is not answered. There is nothing telling in the event logs, and it is an inconsistent problem. Has anyone else seen this issue of found a fix?
