• Should I redo an abandoned project with Lightswitch?

  I had a small project that I was doing on the side. It was basically a couple of forms linked to a DB. Access was out, because it was a specifically meant to be a web application. Being a small project I used ASP.NET Dynamic Data, but, for various reasons, the project ended before deployment. I met the client recently, and he said there was a need for it still. I'm considering restarting the project with Dynamic Data, but I've seen some Lightswitch demos, and was suitably impressed with the BETA. I will wait for RTM if I use it, but is it a good idea to use Lightswitch to replace the Dyanmic Data? The amount of work I put into the Dynamic Data site isn't really an issue. Additional information: It's a system that tracks production in a small factory, broken down by line, machine, section and will generate reports. I would guess that the data structure will remain fairly constant over time, but that the reporting requirements will grow. The other thing is that the factory is part of a larger group, and I'm hopeful that, if this system succeeds, similar work with be forthcoming for other factories.

• With Google Analytics, is it possible to check a specific page in Multi-Channel conversion attribution?

  I'm somewhat new to Google Analytics, and I'm trying to track all conversions that are assisted by a particular landing page, because I don't expect an instant purchase. I have e-commerce tracking set up. Due to the constraints of the associated ad campaign, I can't include the source/medium code in the url when people go to the landing page, and all of my traffic to the landing page is likely to be direct, so I'm not sure how to tell Multi-Channel marketing that it's a significant page. I know how to add events to a page, but I'm still figuring out what they can and cannot do. Would creating a redirect from the landing url to an identical url+source/medium code work? Any advice on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. Tracking the final sale conversion is not the issue. Ecommerce reporting is functioning just fine on the site. I just want to report the landing page as an assist, whenever it shows up in the funnel, and I need to be able to do that across multiple visits.

• Using Queries with Coherence Write-Behind Caches

  Applications that use write-behind caching and wish to query the logical entity set have the option of querying the NamedCache itself or querying the database. In the former case, no particular restrictions exist beyond the limitations intrinsic to the Coherence query engine itself. In the latter case, queries may see partially committed transactions (e.g. with a parent-child relationship, the version of the parent may be different than the version of the child objects) and/or significant version skew (the query may see the current version of one object and a far older version of another object). This is consistent with "read committed" semantics, but the read skew may be far greater than would ever occur in a non-cached environment. As is usually the case, the application developer may choose to accept these limitations (with the hope that they are sufficiently infrequent), or they may choose to validate the reads (perhaps via a version flag on the objects). This also applies to situations where a third party application (such as a reporting tool) is querying the database. In many cases, the database may only be in a consistent state after the Coherence cluster has been halted.

• Translating an object along its heading

  I am working on a simulation that requires me to have several objects moving around in 3D space (text output of their current position on the grid and heading is fine, I do not need graphics), and I am having some trouble getting objects to move along their relative headings. I have a basic understanding of vectors and matrices. I am using a vector to represent their position, and I am also using Euler Angles. I can translate one of my entities with a matrix along whatever axis, and I can alter their heading. For example, if I have an entity at (order is XYZ) 1, 1, 1, with a heading of 0, I can apply a translation matrix to get them to talk to 1, 1, 2 fine. However, if I change their heading to 270, they still walk to 1, 1, 3, instead of 2, 1, 2 as I desire. I have a feeling that my problem lies in not translating my matrix from world space to object space, but I am not sure how to go about that. How can I do this? Addition: I am using 3D vectors to represent their current position and their heading (using the three euler angles). For now, all I want to do is have an entity walk in a square, reporting their current position at each step. So, assuming it starts at 10, 10, 10 I want it to walk as follows: 10,10,10 -> 10, 10, 15 10, 10, 15 -> 5, 10, 15 5, 10, 15 -> 5, 10, 10 5, 10, 10 -> 10, 10, 10 My 1 Z unit translation matrix is as follows: [1 0 0 0] [0 1 0 0] [0 0 1 1] [0 0 0 1] My rotation matrix is as follows: [0 0 1 0] [0 1 0 0] [-1 0 0 0] [0 0 0 1]

• Google Analytics: Do unique events report as unique visits when triggered on pages other than your own domain?

  We just recently attached a SWF to our Brightcove video player to report various events back to Google Analytics. We're also tracking page views with a standard GA snippet on the page where the player is embedded. As I understand it, because a unique has already been recorded for the page, any event being triggered by the player is getting associated with that unique. However, we allow people to embed the video player on other websites. All of the event data started pouring into the Events section as expected, but we noticed a dramatic uptick in unique visitors on the site (nearly double) while the pageview count stayed relatively unchanged. Disabling event tracking brought the traffic back down to average levels. I should also add that in the Pages section of Event tracking we're seeing URLs for other sites where the player has been embedded; but this data isn't showing up in the Content section. It seems counterintuitive, but does GA count an event fired as a unique visit even if it's triggered from some place other than your website? Is so, there any way to trigger an event in the events section without it reporting to the unique visitor count?

• Do the benefits of Resin/Quercus outweigh the overhead?

  Lately, I've been looking more and more into Resin + Quercus as a technology to develop an application of mine. The reason I started looking into it was that this application has high reporting needs, a lot of which cannot (or realistically, should not) be created in real-time. Java would offer a nice backend to queue and generate reports. Also, with Quercus I would be able to develop my data models in Hibernate, and use them "from PHP", thus effectively stretching these models across front and back-end. This same concept would also apply to any front/back-end common business logic, which could be developed in Java libraries. Now, the downside is that whichever front-end (PHP) MVC Framework I choose (my goal was Symfony 2), it is unlikely to work without some heavy modification, if it can work at all. Quercus is a pretty close implementation of PHP, and is supposed to be compatible with PHP5.3, so namespaces and closures SHOULDN'T be a problem, but when I tried to run an existing Symfony 1.4 app, I failed miserably. So, my question to you is, do you think the benefits of Resin + Quercus outweigh the overhead of using a not-so-perfect/stable implementation of PHP? If this were your application, and your goal was and end-product, rather than educational purposes, what would you decide?

• Web master tools is throwing out 404 errors on link not on page

  Webmaster tools is showing thousands of 404 errors, where pages on the site are referring to another incorrect url. For example, URL not found www.plantify.co.uk/shop/=, linked from http://www.plantify.co.uk/shop/gift-voucher and http://www.plantify.co.uk/shop/special-plant-offers. I obviously have checked the source and cannot find any references to this link on any page. The only consistent issue is that it only seems to report this error on pages with two section i.e. www.plantify.co.uk/shop does not report any error whilst all pages with www.plantify.co.uk/shop/xxx (where xxx can be several different pages such as gift-voucher) all report this. I cannot seem to duplicate this error. I have run a link checker (we use Screaming Frog) and it does not report this error. I have fetched these pages as a bot, and these do not report this error. I am at a total loss. I cannot even duplicate the issue, but it is most definitely an issue, as Webmaster Tools is reporting new errors every day. Is this perhaps google bot doing its own thing?

I'm researching a web host for a client and am looking for any recommendations of hosts you may have used and been happy with. Here are the requirements I've been given: The hosting service needs to either provide or allow us to add the following functionality: i. ASP/ASP.Net ii. video streaming iii. audio streaming iv. reporting v. RSS feeds vi. site search vii. forums viii. podcasts ix. Flash x. CMS: looking at using Percussion Software xi. PII registration xii. tie into SF.com (Sales Force) They also want to have a pre-prod server available so they can test the website before going public with it. • Resume on 30 Days of SharePoint

  Dear readers, as you might have noticed... It was an organisational desaster on my end! Even though I continued my studies and research on Microsoft SharePoint 2013 during the last 30 days, I wasn't able to write an article a day to keep you posted on my progress. Nonetheless, I gathered a good number of additional blogs, mainly SharePoint MVP sites, and online forums which will be helpful in the next couple of weeks while I'm actually going to develop a C#-based client which will enable an existing 'legacy' application to SharePoint as a document management system (DMS) besides other already existing solutions. Finding excuses Well, no. Not really. I simply didn't block any or enough time every day to write down my progress during my own challenge. My log book on learning about SharePoint stands at 41 hours and 15 minutes during this month. Which means that I spent an average of more than 1 hour per day on getting into SharePoint. I know that might sound a little bit low but also keep in mind that I went for the challenge on top of my daily job and private responsibilities. During the same period there had been two priority 0 incidents from clients - external root cause - which took presedence over this leisure project. More to come Anyway, it was a first trial and despite the low level of reporting on my blog, I'm confident about what I learned during the last 30 days, and I'm ready to implement the client's requirements. At least, I would say that I have a better understanding about the road map or the path to walk during the next month. As time and secrecy allows I'm going to note down some bits and pieces... During the process of development, I'm going to 'cheat' on the challenge summary article and add links to those new entries. Just for the sake of completeness. Next challenge? Hmm, there had been ideas during the last meetup of the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community (MSCC) regarding certifications in IT and eventually we might organise some kind of a study group for specific exams, most probably Microsoft exams towards MCSD Web Developer or Windows Developer.

• What to do if you find a vulnerability in a competitor's site?

  While working on a project for my company, I needed to build functionality that allows users to import/export data to/from our competitor's site. While doing this, I discovered a very serious security exploit that could, in short, perform any script on the competitor's website. My natural feeling is to report the issue to them in the spirit of good-will. Exploiting the issue to gain advantage crossed my mind, but I don't want to go down that path. So my question is, would you report a serious vulnerability to your direct competition, in order to help them? Or would you keep your mouth shut? Is there a better way of going about this, perhaps to gain at least some advantage from the fact that I'm helping them by reporting the issue? Update (Clarification): Thanks for all your feedback so far, I appreciate it. Would your answers change if I were to add that the competition in question is a behemoth in the market (hundreds of employees in several continents), and my company only started a few weeks ago (three employees)? It goes without saying, they most definitely will not remember us, and if anything, only realize that their site needs work (which is why we entered this market in the first place). I confess this is one of those moral vs. business toss-ups, but I appreciate all the advice.

• Fail to boot after installation onto ASUS PC 1015PX

  My new ASUS 1015PX has the usual Windows on the SDA1 partition - 100Gb, followed by SDA2 - 15Gb - as the recovery partition for Windows, and SDA3 with 183Gb for drive D:\ for windows. ASUS uses SDA4 - 19Mb for it's own use. 11.10 on an USB will load Ubuntu on a try basis and it seems OK, but every time I attempt an install, Ubuntu quickly shuts down and the restart process begins. This repeats endlessly. I've tried 10.04 Netbook Remix but that will not boot at all with the machine reporting - unknown keyword in config file gfxboot vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image. I've gone through the above about 6 times each with the same results. I have also tried the above with the partitioning unchanged, and using gparted, with SDA3 formatted to ext4, windows D:\ reduced to 8Gb providing a 175Gb unallocated space - all to no avail. Further information: During my attempt to load 11.10, I notice that on the page which offers 3 options of loading, the first in the list includes the statement 'install INSIDE windows...' whereas the on line help shows 'install ALONGSIDE windows...'. (my caps for emphasis) I have double checked that I am using the correct download - not the install within windows option.

• ASP.NET MVC Cookbook - public review

  I have recently started writing another book.  The topic of this book is ASP.NET MVC.  This book differs from my previous book in that rather than working towards building one project from end to end - this book will demonstrate specific topics from end to end.  It is a recipe book (hence the cookbook name) and will be part of the Packt Publishing cookbook series.  An example recipe in this book might be how to consume JSON, creating a master /details page, jquery modal popups, custom ActionResults, etc.  Basically anything recipe oriented around the topic of ASP.NET MVC might be acceptable.  If you are interested in helping out with the review process you can join the "ASP.NET MVC 2 Cookbook-review" group on Google here: http://groups.google.com/group/aspnet-mvc-2-cookbook-review Currently the suggested TOC for the project is listed.  Also, chapters 1, 2, and most of 8 are posted.  Chapter 5 should be available tonight or tomorrow. • DB Object passing between classes singleton, static or other?

  So I'm designing a reporting system at work it's my first project written OOP and I'm stuck on the design choice for the DB class. Obviously I only want to create one instance of the DB class per-session/user and then pass it to each of the classes that need it. What I don't know it what's best practice for implementing this. • what will EcmaScript 6 bring to the table for us

  Our company ported moderate chunks of business logic to JavaScript. We compile the code with a minifier, which further improves performance. Since the language is dynamically typed, it lends itself well to obfuscation, which occurs as a byproduct of minification. We went to great efforts to ensure it positively screams, performance-wise. We can now do what we did before, faster, better, with less code, on more platforms. In summary, we are very satisfied with the current state of the language. I personally love the language especially for its cross-platform nature. So naturally, I read up a lot about the state of JavaScript compilers, performance and compatibility across as many browsers and platforms as I have time to research. The one theme which has been growing louder and louder these days, is the news about ECMAScript 6. So far, what I have been able to gather is that ES6 promises a better development experience; firstly by enabling new ways to do things, secondly by reporting errors early. This sounds great for those who are still waiting for the language to meet their needs before jumping on board. But we have already jumped on board in a big way. Sure, I expect that we will have to do ongoing maintenance and feature revisions on our code through the years, and that we would obviously make use of best practices at the time. But I don't see us refactoring major portions of it to take advantage of language features that are mostly intended to boost developer productivity. I keep wondering, what impact will the language advances ultimately have on our existing, well-written, well-performing code base? Is there something I am missing? Is there something we ought to look out for? Does anyone have tips or guidance on how we should approach the ecmascript.next finalization? Should we care?

• Is there an open source version check library and web app?

  I'm a developer for a cross platform (Win, MacOS, Linux) open source C++ application. I would like to have the program occasionally check for the latest version from our web site. Between the security, privacy, and cross platform network issues, I'd rather not roll our own solution. It seems like this is a common enough thing that there 'ought' to be a library/app which will do this. Unfortunately, the searches I've tried come up empty. Ideally, the web app would track requests and process the logs into some nice reports (number of users, what version, what platform, frequency of use, maybe even geographical info from IP address, etc.). While appropriately respecting privacy, etc. What pre-existing tools can help solve this problem? Edits: I am looking for a reporting tool, not a dependency checker. Our project has the challenge of keeping up with our users. Most do not join the mailing list. Our project has not been picked up by major distributions -- most of our users are Windows/MacOS anyway. When a new version comes out, we have no way of informing our users of its existence. Development is moving pretty fast, major features added every few months. We would like to provide the user with a way to check for an updated version. While we're at it, we would like to use these requests for some simple & anonymous usage tracking (X users running version Y with Z frequency, etc.). We do not need/want something that auto-updates or tracks dependencies on the system. We are not currently worried about update size -- when the user chooses to update, we expect them to download the complete latest version. We would like to keep this as simple as possible.

• Active Directory Password Policy Problem

  To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied. Enterprise Manager’s compliance library is filled with a wide variety of standards based on Oracle’s recommendations, best practices and security guidelines. These standards can be easily associated to a target to generate a report showing its degree of conformance to that standard. ( To get an overview of  Database compliance management in Enterprise Manager see this screenwatch. ) Starting with release 12.1.0.4 of Enterprise Manager the compliance library will contain a new standard based on the US Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Security Technical Implementation Guide (STIG) for Oracle Database 11g. According to the DISA website, “The STIGs contain technical guidance to ‘lock down’ information systems/software that might otherwise be vulnerable to a malicious computer attack.” In essence, a STIG is a technical checklist an administrator can follow to secure a system or software. Many US government entities are required to follow these standards however many non-US government entities and commercial companies base their standards directly or partially on these STIGs. You can find more information about the Oracle Database and other STIGs on the DISA website. The Oracle Database 11g STIG consists of two categories of checks, installation and instance. Installation checks focus primarily on the security of the Oracle Home while the instance checks focus on the configuration of the running database instance itself. These include approved exceptions and grace periods. Enterprise Manager now supports the ability to temporarily or permanently suppress a violation. Unlike when you clear a manual rule violation, suppression simply removes the violation from the compliance results UI and in turn its negative impact on the score. The violation still remains in the EM repository and can be accounted for in compliance reports. Temporarily suppressing a violation can give users a grace period in which to address an issue.
