  I have a request to change the collation of a SQL Server Database: ALTER DATABASE solarwind95 collate SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS but I get this strange error: Meldung 5075, Ebene 16, Status 1, Zeile 1 Das 'Spalte'-Objekt 'CustomPollerAssignment.PollerID' ist von 'Datenbanksortierung' abhängig. The database sorting cannot be changed if a schema bound object depends on it. Remove the dependency of the database sortieren and retry. I got a ton more of the errors like that.

• Regex Pattern for ignoring a custom escape character

  I am trying to find a suitable regex for matching pair of custom characters in an input string. These custom characters are replaced by their corresponding html tags. For e.g. The input string can have underscores in pairs to indicate words in bold. Hence, _Name_ outputs as <b>Name</b> However if there is a genuine underscore in the string, it cannot be replaced by "bold" tags and has to be ignored. The genuine underscore has to be preceded by / (I couldn't find a better character, it could be one more underscore or hyphen or whatever). Any single or paired occurrance of this genuine underscore has to be ignored by regex. So far I could come up with this regex: var pattern = @"(?!/)_(.*?)(?!/)_"; But it fails in below input string: _Tom_Katy/_Richard/_/_Stephan_and many users It outputs as <b>Tom</b>Katy/<b>Richard/_/</b>Stephan_and many users Many Thanks in Advance, Pr

• Non-existent file in limbo prevents push to remote branch (Bazaar VCS)

  Hi! I use Bazaar VCS to version files locally on my notebook. When im in the office I merge the changes to a repository on a windows share and also push all the files there (for backup reasons). My Problem: The last push resulted in an error, because I added a file with a very long filename (I had that problem before ... python doesn't like long filenames). So I removed the file (I didn't need it anyway) and forgot about the problem for a while, because commiting still worked fine. The next time I wanted to push my new revision I got a new error: bzr: ERROR: [Error 3] Das System kann den angegebenen Pfad nicht finden: u'//path/to/remote/branch/.bzr/checkout/limbo/new-8/loooooooongfilename.xls' translation: bzr: ERROR: [Error 3] The system can't find the following path: What I've tried: Deleting the limbo folder-- limbo folder doesn't exist Create the missing path with a dummy-file -- bazaar locks the branch -- unlock -- same problem as before bzr check -- Everything is fine -- No success bzr reconcile -- No success Thanks for reading ;o)

  Hi Guys, I have several URLs that I want to redirect to the same place, however these are dynamic URLs. The structure is something like this: http://www.mysite.com/declaration/list?[query_string] What I think would be ideal for this situation is to use some regex in my .htaccess file to redirect all these links to the sites home page. I was wondering if someone could help me with the regex for this situation. So far, I have this, but it doesn't work: RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^(.*)$ RewriteRule ^/declaration/list$ http://www.mysite.com/$ [R=301,L] My regex is weak to say the least, something I want to, and am trying to learn. • What are appropriate ways to represent relationships between people in a database table?

  I've got a table of people - an ID primary key and a name. In my application, people can have 0 or more real-world relationships with other people, so Jack might "work for" Jane and Tom might "replace" Tony and Bob might "be an employee of" Rob and Bob might also "be married to" Mary. What's the best way to represent this in the database? A many to many intersect table? A series of self joins? A relationship table with one row per relationship pair and type, where I insert records for the relationship in both directions?

• problem with if statement used to determine function return

  Im using an if statement to determine what to return in a function, but it seems to be not working the way i want it to. function DoThis($dogs, $cats){ // do something with dogs, pet them perhaps. $reg = $dogs[0]; $nate = $dogs[1]; if($cats = "dave"){return $reg;} if($cats = "tom"){return $nate;} } $cats is a string (if that helps), and when entered it doesn't yield any return. If i manually set a return, that works, but the above doesnt for some reason.

  I've got 3 tables that are something like this (simplified here ofc): users user_id user_name info info_id user_id rate contacts contact_id user_id contact_data users has a one-to-one relationship with info, although info doesn't always have a related entry. users has a one-to-many relationship with contacts, although contacts doesn't always have related entries. I know I can grab the proper 'users' + 'info' with a left join, is there a way to get all the data I want at once? For example, one returned record might be: user_id: 5 user_name: tom info_id: 1 rate: 25.00 contact_id: 7 contact_data: 555-1212 contact_id: 8 contact_data: 555-1315 contact_id: 9 contact_data: 555-5511 Is this possible with a single query? Or must I use multiple?

  Currently i'm having a project which requires to set placemarks and link them with polylines (i suppose), lines which have an arc to it, with properly segmented portions to the arc. I've been able to generate kml file with jak library. But i can't produce more den 1 placemark in the kml file. As a side note I believe that the answers do demonstrate that it could be a good interview question, as long as the emphasis is not on the ability to remember trivia about the data type overflow and its implications (that can be easily spotted during unit testing), or the way of obtaining MAX and MIN limits (can easily be looked up in the documentation) but rather on the analysis of various ways of dealing with the problem.

I was thinking the mapper would emit siteID \t username and the reducer would keep a set() of the unique usersnames per key and then emit the length of that set. However that would be potentially storing millions of usernames in memory which doesn't seem right. Anyone have a better way? I'm using python streaming by the way thanks

• Best way to handle SQL Server fulltext index updates

  Hi all, I have a fulltext index which doesn't need to be immediately up-to-date, I'd like to spare myself the I/O (when I do bulk updates, I see a ton of I/O related to the index) and do the index updates during low usage times (nightly, perhaps even weekly). It seems there are two ways to go about this: Turn off change tracking (SET CHANGE_TRACKING OFF) and add a timestamp field to the indexed table, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start INCREMENTAL population, or Enable change tracking, but set it to MANUAL, so that you can run alter fulltext index on <table> start UPDATE population when you need it updated. Is there a preferred method? I couldn't tell from this overview if there was a performance benefit one way or the other. Tom

• Searching Outlook Global Adress List

  I'm pulling up the Global Address List from Outlook like so... Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application oApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Application(); AddressList gal = oApp.Session.GetGlobalAddressList(); ...with the aim of eventually being able to search through this in my own application to retrieve contact information which I can then supply to a method that squirrels off an email. Unfortunately given that my own GAL has about 20K entries in (the customers much more) using a foreach or something simply doesn't work in an acceptable timeframe. I want to pass a string like "Tom" to a method and have it return a list of possible contacts. Is this possible outside of actually opening up Outlook and creating the mail there? Note: There are a couple of other questions similar to this but most seem to have no good answer. I'm hoping I have more luck.

Performance and speed is not a issue as i am just writing small test scripts to get to grips with the language.

  Hi there, I've accidentally copied a large part of a folder tree from my SVN working copy to my shared Windows web host via FTP. The site is now littered with .svn directories and and I need some way of cleaning them. The only access I have to the server is via FTP, or by running a script on the server. Does any one have a script which can be run remotely to remove the files over FTP (any language Windows/Linux is fine) or a script in ASP, ASP.net or PHP I can run directly on the server to remove these directories? • Binding jQuery UI plugin after $.load

My problem comes in when I load form elements using $.load(). I cannot attach the DatePicker to any of the loaded elements. For example: $("#id").load("urlToLoad", function() { bindDatepicker($("input.date")); }); Loads the form elements into a div just fine, but will not attach the DatePicker. Why is this?   I have a simple (actually simplified :) ) scenario that is possibly the cause for the headache I've been having for the last few days... My current application (that serves 100's of users) currently uses Oracle as the database. I have no stored procs (I wish actually). Now, I've been asked if the product will work if I migrate to IBM DB2 as the database. So, after taking Oracle for granted all this while.... and having re-read Tom's article on MVCC (Multiversion Concurrency Control) and going through this post stating that DB2 is not 'on the list' or 'just tip-toeing in the area' as it were... I know I can't be sure that the product will work with DB2 as is. Is there no hope.. or is there a nice disclaimer I could use.. ?

  Well, I've heard programmers get to interact with other programmers quiet a lot. But, who gets to meet a lot of new people on a daily basis at work without getting the feeling "Goosh! I'm stuck with him/this for another year :(" - Admins or Coders? And what kind of people domain do each get to interact with? Secondly, I've had this myth for a long time that unlike programmers, Network/System/Security Admins get locked-up in a den and juiced up late nights and early mornings. Most of the time they had to slip out of work without being noticed. But recently one of my seniors from my grad school told he had to work late and on weekends for a product release. How true and often does this happen with programmers and admins?

• PHP exec() and system() functions always return false in IIS

  Hi there, I'm trying to use the PHP exec() or system() (or any other similar function) to run a batch file, but I can't seem to get these to return anything. The simplest example I've seen is this, which outputs nothing: <?php echo system('dir'); ?> The script is running on a windows XP machine on IIS with PHP installed and I've also tried it on my shared hosting account running windows 2003 server/IIS. • Does Ruby on Rails "has_many" array provide data on a "need to know" basis?

  On Ruby on Rails, say, if the Actor model object is Tom Hanks, and the "has_many" fans is 20,000 Fan objects, then actor.fans gives an Array with 20,000 elements. Probably, the elements are not pre-populated with values? Otherwise, getting each Actor object from the DB can be extremely time consuming. So it is on a "need to know" basis? So does it pull data when I access actor.fans[500], and pull data when I access actor.fans[0]? If it jumps from each record to record, then it won't be able to optimize performance by doing sequential read, which can be faster on the hard disk because those records could be in the nearby sector / platter layer -- for example, if the program touches 2 random elements, then it will be faster just to read those 2 records, but what if it touches all elements in random order, then it may be faster just to read all records in a sequential way, and then process the random elements. But how will RoR know whether I am doing only a few random elements or all elements in random?

• Best way to store 3 pieces of data as a single entry

  For a game server, I want to record details when a player makes a kill, store this, and then at intervals update to a sql database. The part i'm interested in right now is the best method of storing the kill information. What i'd like to pass to the sql server on update would be {PlayerName, Kills, Deaths}, where the kills and deaths are a sum for the period between updates. So i'm assuming i'd build a list along the lines of {bob, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} {tom, 1, 0} {frank, 0, 1} then on update, consolidate the list to {frank, 14, 3}etc Can someone offer some advice please?

For example, you can add a method (with a default implementation) to an abstract class without breaking old implementations of the class". What does it mean (especially what means "breaking old implementations of the class")? Appreciate if anyone could show me a sample why from this perspective abstract class is better than interface? thanks in advance, George
